Charles finished 2012 with 285 carries for 1,509 yards and five touchdowns, while averaging an impressive 5.3 yards per carry. He also added 35 receptions for 236 yards and one score.
Analysis: Charles certainly had his erratic moments, but that handful of miserable games can be chalked up to a terrible Chiefs offense that had basically no threat of a passing game for the better part of the season. When he was given the carries, Charles was extremely productive. In the 10 games in which he saw at least 15 attempts he hit a minimum of 87 yards on the ground each time, and whenever he saw 18+ carries (seven games) Charles reached the century mark. And with three touchdowns of 80 or more yards, it's safe to say that the lightning-in-a-bottle back lost none of his explosiveness after missing the 2011 season with a torn ACL. In Andy Reid's system in 2013 Charles may see his carries go down, but his scoring opportunities should rise, so his status as a No. 1 fantasy back is unlikely to change.

Charles (illness) practiced fully again Friday, the Chiefs' official site reports.
Analysis: Charles is officially probable for Sunday's game against the Broncos, but there is little doubt that he'll be out there this weekend. Charles, who missed most of the 2011 season due to a torn ACL, is third in the NFL with 1,456 rushing yards, which puts him behind only Marshawn Lynch (1,490 yards) and Adrian Peterson (1,898 yards) -- another player who is remarkably bouncing back from a 2011 ACL injury.

Charles had a career-high 259 yards rushing against the Broncos in 2010 and is coming off a 226-yard performance in Week 16." FULL LIKE/DISLIKE ANALYSIS

Charles had 22 carries for 226 rushing yards and a touchdown, as well as one catch on three targets for four yards Sunday against the Colts. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: A monster day for Charles, who rumbled 86 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second half. Fantasy owners who were nervous after his nine-carry, 10-yard effort last week against the Raiders were surely excited about his performance Sunday. Up next is a matchup in Denver against a Broncos' defense that has been very good against the run this season.

For fantasy owners who were still able to advance in their fantasy playoffs despite the dismal performance, Charles has an encouraging matchup next week against a Colts' defense that allowed 165 rushing yards to Arian Foster on Sunday.

In his Week 14 "Strength of Schedule" report, fantasy editor Marcas Grant notes, "It's very encouraging that the Chiefs have been giving Jamaal Charles a heavy workload in recent weeks. FULL S.O.S.
Analysis: Despite not finding the end zone, the veteran back has scored double-digit fantasy points in his last three games. A matchup against a Browns defense which is allowing an average of 115 yards rushing per game and nine scores could see him finally increase his touchdown total.

Chiefs worst in turnover ratio
In his "Move the Sticks" report, NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah notes the Chiefs offense "currently ranks 20th in total yards, but the unit's futile efforts to protect the football have destroyed any chance of success; the Chiefs have thrown a league-high 16 interceptions and lost 10 fumbles. Their turnover ratio of minus-21 is also the NFL's worst." READ: MOVE THE STICKS

Analysis: Fantasy owners have to be screaming about the lack of touches that Charles has gotten this season, especially as of late. Unfortunately, he's had fewer than 20 carries in four of the last five games, all losses for the Chiefs. Analysis: With the outcome of the game pretty much determined, there was clearly no upside to rolling out a banged up Charles for the team's final series. Analysis: "Jamaal is a good player...and give Oakland credit," Daboll said. "They did a nice job of stopping the run. We tried to move it some other ways. Every week is a new week." The Chiefs fell behind early on and were forced to play catch-up the rest of the game. Coach Romeo Crennel didn't shed too much light on Charles' five-carry workload Sunday, other than to note that teammate Peyton Hillis was back in the team's RB rotation, the Kansas City Star reports. "I'm not exactly sure," Crennel said when asked why Charles wasn't involved much on Sunday against the Raiders. "We were rotating our backs in there. Hillis was back and he was able to get some carries. He was somewhat effective. When a guy's effective, we kind of stay with him a little bit."
Analysis: Next up for the Chiefs and Charles are the Chargers on Thursday. It's not the greatest matchup -- the Chargers are allowing just 80 rushing yards a game to date -- but benching Charles is probably not a palatable option for most owners. Still, with Hillis now healthy, don't expect Charles to be used nearly as much as he was in Week 3 (33 carries) and Week 5 (31 carries) going forward.

Shaun Draughn had only four carries and Peyton Hillis had to sit again with an injury, so it looks like it's Charles' backfield for the keeping.

Charles, who exploded for 233 yards on 33 carries with a touchdown, as well as six catches for 55 yards in Sunday's win over the Saints, acknowledges that he had reservations about his surgically-repaired knee prior to his Week 3 breakout, the Kansas City Star reports. "I didn't trust myself (until Sunday)," Charles said. "It really hit me when I started getting the runs. I started trusting myself."
Analysis: "I kind of feel like the old me, especially breaking that long run and finishing it," Charles noted, referring to his 91-yard TD scamper Sunday. "It's motivating me more that I still have my speed and I still can run the long ones." The Saints have been weak against the run thus far and the Chargers' should offer Charles a more challenging matchup in Week 4, but it's obviously highly encouraging that he is regaining trust and confidence in his knee and producing in the process. Barring any setbacks going forward, Charles figures to continue to incrementally gain any explosiveness that he may still be missing, but his Week 3 effort shows that he's well on his way there.

Charles back in charge
Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles had a breakout performance against the Saints, totaling 288 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: Fantasy owners who were concerned about the back were rewarded for sticking with him. While performances like this can't be expected every week, his value certainly received a boost.

Jamaal Charles: 288 Total Yards in OT Win
Charles (knee) had 33 carries for 233 yards and a touchdown, as well as six catches for 55 yards, during Sunday's overtime win over the Saints.
Analysis: A monster game for Charles, who dominated the touches out of the Chiefs' backfield, especially after Peyton Hillis went down with an ankle injury. His stats would have been a little more modest had he not broken free for a 91-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, but he did and fantasy owners everywhere rejoiced at the production. If Hillis has to miss any time, or is limited by his ankle, Charles' touches could continue to be high.

Charles (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Saints, the team's official Twitter feed reports.
Analysis: It's an encouraging sign that Charles practiced all week, after knee soreness apparently limited his workload in the blowout loss against the Bills in Week 2. The Saints' defense has been absymal through two games, so Charles has an opportunity to get back on track Sunday.

Charles (knee, probable) practiced fully all week, the Chiefs' official site reports.
Analysis: Charles appears past the knee bruise that slowed him in Week 2 and Sunday he'll get a crack at a New Orleans' defense that has allowed 372 rushing yards over the first two weeks of the season.

Charles (knee) practiced fully again Thursday, the Chiefs' official site reports.
Analysis: Charles' full participation for the second day in a row seems to reinforce the notion that the knee bruise he suffered in Week 2 was not a significant setback to his surgically-repaired knee.

Jamaal Charles: (Knee) Practices Fully
Charles, who suffered a bruised knee Sunday, practiced fully Wednesday, the Kansas City Star reports. "(Charles) fell on his knee, got bruised, came up limping, so we took him out rather than leave him in there and expose him a little bit more," coach Romeo Crennel said of not using Charles much as Week 2's contest progressed. "Then as it developed, the other players were doing decent, so we didn't feel a need to put him back at that moment.'
Analysis: Charles' full participation Wednesday has to be a relief for owners concerned that he might be limited due to a setback with his surgically-repaired knee. Assuming no setbacks in the coming days, look for Charles to see added touches Sunday against the Saints.

Cassel needs help from his defense
Many Chiefs fans want to blame quarterback Matt Cassel for their team’s woes, writes NFL.com’s Michael Lombardi, but Kansas City's defense has been bad, allowing 75 points in two games.
Analysis: Perhaps the fantasy players most hurt by the Chiefs poor defense have been Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis. With Kansas City down big, the team has been forced to junk the running game. It has, however, allowed for Cassel and his receivers to score big points in garbage time.

Charles dealing with soreness
Charles carried the ball only twice in the second half of the Chiefs matchup against the Bills, which coach Romeo Crennel attributed to soreness in the running back's surgically repaired knee.
Analysis: This isn't good news for fantasy owners invested in Charles. For those who don't own Peyton Hillis as his handcuff, try to secure him via trade if possible and hedge the potential risk of Charles missing time.

Jamaal Charles: Knee Flares Up
Though coach Romeo Crennel said that Charles re-injured his surgically-repaired left knee in Sunday's loss to Buffalo, he added that Charles will probably be available for Week 3's game against the Saints, the Kansas City Star reports. "He got banged up a little bit and then (we) decided not to put him back in the game," Crennel said Monday. "He wanted to go back in."
Analysis: Though it's somewhat concerning that his knee flared up, it's not entirely unexpected, given that Charles tore his ACL about this time last year. It seems to be a minor issue, but it's a setback, nonetheless. "I talked to him after the game. He said he wanted to go back in and he felt OK," Crennel added. "He was getting treatment, so I think he'll be ready to play this week." If Charles isn't, or continues to be limited, as he was Sunday, then Peyton Hillis and Shaun Draughn would be in line to see added work in Week 3.

Charles had six carries for three yards and three catches for 19 yards during Sunday's loss at Buffalo.
Analysis: Charles couldn't do anything with his backfield touches, which made the Chiefs give Peyton Hillis 11 carries and Shaun Draughn five; the latter two combined for 122 yards on the ground, which should certainly give Charles owners some pause. Next week's matchup against New Orleans could give Charles some more opportunities to show he was worthy of an early round draft choice.

Charles had 16 carries for 87 yards during Sunday's loss to the Falcons.
Analysis: Charles was the only Chief with double-digit carries and his 5.4 YPC also led the team; unfortunately, the team had two rushing touchdowns that went to Shaun Draughn and Matt Cassel, leaving Charles and Peyton Hillis out in the cold. Charles is a big-play runner and 46 of his 87 yards came on one rush. He was also not targeted at all in the passing game, something fantasy owners were certainly hoping to see more of.

Jamaal Charles: Ready to Prove He's Back
Coach Romeo Crennel intends to use Charles as much as it takes to win their opening game Sunday versus Atlanta, the Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: Charles is ready for whatever workload the Chiefs give him and is not concerned about his surgically-repaired knee, proclaiming, "I'm worried about the Falcons. I'm not worried about my knee." By all accounts Charles feels great physically, and if Atlanta coach Mike Smith's words are any indication, they are just as worried about Charles as he is focused on them: "I anticipate seeing him a lot on Sunday. He's a guy who can really hurt you on the outside, and he's a great cutback runner." Smith is right to be worried. Charles displayed his trademark burst several times throughout the preseason as if he'd never torn his ACL at all. And he plans to back up a statement he made in the spring when he issued this warning to future opponents: "When I touch the field again, you're going to feel my pain." With Charles back to 100 percent mentally and physically, and in a backfield tandem with the bruising Peyton Hillis, the Falcons shouldn't be the only team concerned to face the Chiefs.

Charles rushed six times for 32 yards and caught one pass for seven yards in the Chiefs' blowout loss to Seattle on Friday night.
Analysis: Charles may not see any carries in the team's final preseason game, but he has shown in three exhibition matchups that he has regained the explosive burst that made him so special prior to tearing his ACL last September. While he's sure to split carries with Peyton Hillis, the lightning component of the Chiefs' backfield should remain a great source of total yards.

Charles (knee) carried three times for 17 yards (5.7 YPC) while catching both balls thrown his way for 18 more yards in Kansas City's exhibition loss Saturday at St. Louis.
Analysis: Charles again demonstrated that his recovery from ACL surgery last September has culminated in a healthy and hopefully durable feature back. Memory of his highlight-reel plays is enough to tantalize in fantasy drafts, but until he takes on 20 or more touches on a weekly basis, we won't know if that Charles is in fact back or if some lesser yet effective version is present.

Jamaal Charles: (Knee) Back In Action
Charles (knee) had three carries for 12 yards and one reception for 11 yards in Friday's preseason win over Arizona.
Analysis: It was Charles' first game since surgery for a torn ACL suffered last September. He looked healthy in limited action and took a hit to his left knee on his first carry. His stock may continue to climb this preseason if he shows he's back to full strength.

Jamaal Charles: Will Play Friday Versus Cardinals
Charles (knee) will play on Friday in the Chiefs first preseason game versus the Cardinals, Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: Since Charles has been participating fully in the team's training camp with just the occasional practice off to prevent swelling in his knee, it's not particularly surprising that he'll suit up on Friday. All reports coming from Kansas City are that Charles looks like his old self and it may take just a few explosive cuts in the preseason and to see him bounce back up after a hit to once again start thinking about him as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 running back come draft time.

Jamaal Charles: Has His "Mojo" Back
Charles returned to practice Wednesday and told the Kansas City Star that his legs feel fresh and rested since he's ben off and rehabbing the past 10+ months. With regards to the confidence he has in his knee, Charles proclaimed, "I feel like I got my mojo back."
Analysis: When pressed further about what he's been doing on the knee in practice Charles said that he's been stopping and starting when making his moves through the holes in the new zone scheme implemented by offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. All the sound bites out of Chiefs camp sound great about Charles and it may just take one or two of his trademark flashy runs to launch him back into the No. 1 running back discussion.

Jamaal Charles: (Knee) Rested Tuesday Night
Charles was given off from Tuesday night's practice to rest his knee, the Chiefs' official site reports.
Analysis: This is pretty much standard protocol for a player returning from an ACL injury. Tony Moeaki was also granted the night off as the team moved the practice to a turf field. Expect Charles, Moeaki and likely Eric Berry as well to each receive periodic rest days to prevent any swelling from occurring in their knees.

Jamaal Charles: Feels Good in First Chiefs Practice
Charles (knee) participated in the Chiefs' first training camp practice on Friday and his knee is reportedly feeling good, according to the Kansas City Star.
Analysis: Telling the media, "I feel I've got my swag back" and that his legs "feel fresh," Charles once again expressed his anticipation that he won't be hindered by the ACL injury that cost him 2011. Although coach Romeo Crennel reiterated the Chiefs' intention to take things a bit slow on Charles and his other players returning from ACL tears (Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki), it was nevertheless a promising sign that Charles could participate fully and make cuts smoothly and without pain. Being just the first day though, this is certainly a topic to revisit regularly during the preseason to see if Charles' knee continues to respond well as the intensity increases and the pads go on.

Charles cleared for practice
Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles was officially cleared to practice after passing a physical on Friday.
Analysis: Presuming Charles returns to form, he could be a good value in fantasy drafts. Currently considered a No. 2 RB, he has the potential to post better numbers than his draft status dictates. Even with Peyton Hillis in the mix, the explosive speedster has the potential to score from anywhere on the field.

Jamaal Charles: Expected at Start of Camp
General manager Scott Pioli expects Charles (knee) to be able to participate in the team's first practice when the Chiefs open training camp on July 27, the Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: While the team is anticipating that Charles will be available for the opening of camp, he first has to pass a physical on Thursday the day before camp is to begin. Even if he is ready to go from the outset, the Chiefs intend to take it slow with Charles, Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki, all of whom are coming off torn ACLs. They'll take the necessary precautions to make sure Charles is as close as possible to 100 percent by Week 1, and if he avoids any setbacks during the preseason, he should certainly be considered a strong option at running back in all formats.

Jamaal Charles: (Knee) Very Confident in His Return
Charles, who is slated to have an examination on his knee on June 18, virtually guaranteed that he will be cleared for training camp, the Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: When asked about his ACL recovery, a very confident Charles proclaimed, "When they take the cape off me, I'm ready to go. I'm ready to put my cleats back on and punish everybody in my way." The bold words may serve to reassure Chiefs fans and fantasy owners of Charles, but the fact remains that he has not yet been cleared by a doctor, and until that happens and Charles can display that same bravado with pads on, enthusiasm should be tempered for the former All-Pro's return. If Charles has put in the work to back up his confidence and is as healthy as he claims to be, it will show in the preseason. And if that is the case, let the hype resume for one of the league's most electric backs.

Jamaal Charles: (Knee) Upcoming Doctor Visit Could Clear Him for Camp
Charles will have his knee examined on June 18 to determine if he will be cleared to participate in training camp in late July, the Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: With Charles, Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki will also have their knees checked out on this date to see if their torn ACL's have fully healed and they can be a full-go by training camp. It seems a bit odd that the Chiefs would use an examination more than a month before camp begins to determine if the three will be cleared, but it is possible the team is interested in bringing other free agents to camp for a shot at making the final roster, and they would need to know numbers-wise if they can do that. All three players remain on track at this point for at least the start of the regular season, but of course it would be reassuring to fantasy owners to see Charles going full speed, cutting and taking contact during camp and the preseason.

Charles (knee) is unlikely to be cleared by doctors to play before offseason practice concludes, the Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: The Chiefs will play it safe with Tony Moeaki, Eric Berry, and Charles, all of whom are dealing with knee injuries. "They're still rehabbing," Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said. "They seem to be making progress, but they're just not on the field with us yet." Crennel seems to think that, barring setbacks, all should be ready for training camp. "If they continue to make progress, they should be cleared by camp time," he said.

Jamaal Charles: Confident That He Will Return Stronger
Charles expects to join his teammates in their first full-squad practice on May 21 and feels that he will be more than ready for the start of the season, ESPN.com's Bill Williamson reports.
Analysis: Judging from Charles' strong statements, he's expecting to have his best year yet despite the recovery from an ACL tear he suffered last September. Though any player in his position is likely to offer similar sentiments, the passion in Charles' words and the hunger that is evident in his tone make it difficult to doubt him. As if issued as a warning to the league, he proclaimed, "When I touch the field again, you're going to feel my pain." The intensity and drive with which he's attacked his rehabilitation process are apparent in those words. He went on to say with regard to his physical condition, "I feel it in me that I can bring a lot to the team this year, being bigger, stronger and maybe even a little faster." While he has to be cleared by his surgeon, the famous Dr. James Andrews, before he can actually participate in Kansas City's OTAs, his admission that he's already been cutting and catching balls while working out with teammates is a great indication that Charles is putting himself in position to back up his strong words. While the remainder of his offseason obviously needs to be watched carefully, if Charles can put his money where his mouth is during the preseason, he should once again be considered with a high draft pick.

Jamaal Charles: (Knee) Expected Back by Training Camp
General manager Scott Pioli announced that Charleswho finished his abbreviated 2011 season with just 83 rushing yards on 12 carries and five catches for nine yards and a touchdownis on pace for a full recovery from his September ACL tear by the start of training camp in late July, the Chiefs' official site reports.
Analysis: It's great news to hear that Charles should be ready for all football activities by the start of the Chiefs' training camp, as he is truly an elite talent when at 100%. But for a running back who relies on his exceptional speed and explosiveness to be effective, the concern for Charles is not so much in "when" he'll be back as it is "if" he'll be back as the type of player that became a fantasy star in 2010. If he is able to return by the start of training camp, hopefully Charles can display in preseason games that his ACL injury hasn't sapped any of the great burst and long speed that has made him a nightmare for opposing defenses.
