The Lions have the ability to pressure QB Baker Mayfield into some mistakes, but this unit is too risky against the firepower they're facing in Week 2.

The Lions should be fully healthy Week 1 versus the Rams.

Analysis: The Lions have two new cornerbacks in Carlton Davis (from Tampa Bay) and first-round pick Terrion Arnold, and they're hoping DE Marcus Davenport can return to his old ways (9.0 sacks in 2021) and improve the pass rush. Against an uncertain Rams' offensive line, this unit maintains some upside, but it's tough to get excited with this secondary in the opener with Rams WRs Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua both ready to roll. After all, last year the Rams ranked eighth in the league in scoring.

The Lions drafted LB Jack Campbell in the first round and signed DT DJ Reader (quadriceps) and DE Marcus Davenport in free agency.

Analysis: The Lions have one sack and one interception through two weeks, as their defense continues to lack upside for fantasy purposes. Things will only get worse now that S C.J. There is a decent floor for Lions D/ST this week because the Falcons have committed to the ground game, lowering their chances of running up the score. However, fantasy managers should still aim for more upside outside of deep leagues.

Analysis: The Lions were gifted with plenty of drops by Chiefs receivers, including one that fell into S Brian Branch's hands. Branch returned it for a touchdown. The Lions have an excellent opportunity against the Seahawks, who will be without RT Abraham Lucas (kneecap) and will likely be without LT Charles Cross (toe). The Lions aren't the most talented unit, but there's certainly enough upside for DFS purposes and deeper leagues.

The Lions are expected to be fully healthy for the Week 1 matchup versus the Chiefs.

Analysis: The Lions have turned over most of their secondary this offseason, and the projection isn't convincing, although C.J. Gardner-Johnson brings major upside for fantasy purposes. If DE Aidan Hutchinson takes the next step, too, then this defense will have some streaming upside in 2023. They aren't startable in Week 1, however, as the Chiefs are hosting the opener and QB Patrick Mahomes is still under center.

CB Emmanuel Moseley (knee) is on the PUP list to begin training camp.

Analysis: Moseley tore his ACL last October and is still unavailable. The Lions signed him to a one-year, $6 million contract, so they believe he'll be a starter once he's at full health. However, it remains to be seen if he'll be ready Week 1 as the Lions roll out a new secondary that features CBs Cameron Sutton and CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson (knee) as well. The Lions will be tough to trust early in the season anyway, as they face the Chiefs and Seahawks through the first two weeks.

Analysis: The Eagles' offense is quite good, but this was still an unfortunate performance regardless. We can expect a lot of these performances from the Lions moving forward, but the Week 2 matchup against Washington has some intrigue at least. The Commanders turned the ball over three times in their 28-22 win over the Jaguars in Week 1. The Lions have some upside in Week 2 as a result, but they're one of the more risky plays.

DE Romeo Okwara (Achilles) will miss the first four games of the season after being placed on the reserve/PUP list.

Analysis: Okwara's last healthy season was in 2020 when he recorded 10 sacks. The Lions are hoping DE Aidan Hutchinson -- the second overall pick -- and DE Charles Harris -- who accumulated 7.5 sacks last year -- will be able to provide a fierce enough pass rush. Still, this defense ranked 31st last year with 27.5 points allowed per game and didn't do enough to overcome that in 2022. They're off the fantasy radar for now.
