Works out with Giants
Barner (undisclosed) had a workout with the Giants on Tuesday, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Barner was waived off Tampa Bay's IR on Oct. 11. His presence at Tuesday's workout indicates he has moved on from the undisclosed injury he was dealing with. The 33-year-old suited up for three games with the Bucs and saw four carries for zero yards.

Released from IR
Tampa Bay released Barner (undisclosed) from IR on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Barner suffered a severe undisclosed injury during the preseason opener, which appears to have ended his 2022 campaign. The veteran running back spent the past two seasons with Tampa Bay, during which he had a mere four rushes for zero yards and returned six punts for 47 yards.

Lands on IR
The Buccaneers placed Barner (undisclosed) on injured reserve Monday, independent NFL reporter Dov Kleiman reports.
Analysis: Barner played 23 snaps during the preseason opener, totaling nine touches for 31 yards. However, he appears to have picked up a serious injury, which -- barring an injury settlement -- will end his 2022 campaign before it begins. In a corresponding move, Tampa Bay signed Patrick Laird.

Could get another chance with Bucs?
Barner (groin) is a candidate to return to Tampa Bay on a league-minimum deal, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Barner won't have much of a place in the Buccaneers backfield after the team decided to bring back Leonard Fournette, but his utility on special teams could allow him a shot to compete during training camp. Barner currently is a free agent after having ended last season on IR due to a groin injury, and his best chance of signing anywhere when healthy will be as an option in the return game.

Minimal action on offense in '20
Barner (groin) returned seven kickoffs for 167 yards and ran back 13 punts for 75 yards across six games during the 2020 regular season. He logged just six snaps from scrimmage, failing to bring in his only target.
Analysis: The veteran back saw minimal action on offense for the third time in his last four stops, plying his trade as a full-time return man when not on the Buccaneers' practice squad. Barner also dealt with a concussion and a groin injury, the latter which landed him on injured reserve in late December and ultimately kept him sidelined through the team's postseason run. The 31-year-old also served a four-game suspension for violation of the NFL's Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances during the…read more

Practice window opens
Barner (groin) has been designated to return from injured reserve this week, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Barner will now have a 21-day window during which he can be moved to the active roster, as the running back will take the practice field Wednesday. Barner was placed on IR in late December, but only played six offensive snaps on the season before suffering the groin ailment. Still, his return would add depth to Tampa's kick and punt return game.

Heads to IR
Barner (groin) was placed on IR on Wednesday, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Analysis: Barner had replaced wide receiver Jaydon Mickens as Tampa Bay's return man for punts and kickoffs earlier this season, and the team has promoted Mickens from the practice squad to take back his old role with Barner shelved. The running back played just six snaps on offense all season, so his absence won't be felt in that aspect of the game.

Busy day on returns
Barner returned two kickoffs for 43 yards and ran back five punts for 20 yards in the Buccaneers' 47-7 win over the Lions on Saturday.
Analysis: The veteran running back was particularly busy in the blowout win, with the Lions offense frequently stalling once Matthew Stafford (ankle) was forced from the contest. The highlight of Barner's seven returns was a 30-yard scamper on a kickoff runback, and he now has 242 total return yards through six games. Barner's role should remain exclusive to special teams in Week 17, as the 31-year-old has just six snaps from scrimmage on the campaign.

Tallies 99 return yards in win
Barner returned three kickoffs for 67 yards and ran back four punts for 32 yards in the Buccaneers' 31-27 win over the Falcons on Sunday.
Analysis: The veteran played all but one of his 24 snaps on special teams, pulling double duty on returns and doing a solid job on both kickoffs and punts. Barner is expected to handle each role for the last two regular-season games, and presumably, in the postseason. However, Barner isn't expected to see any appreciable action from scrimmage unless multiple injuries strike the running backs corps.

Falcons' main returner in 2019
Barner ran for 28 yards on four carries and caught six of eight targets for 22 receiving yards during 2019. He also accumulated 267 punt return yards and one touchdown on 35 attempts and 406 kick return yards on 17 attempts.
Analysis: The 29-year-old finished top 10 in yards per punt return for the first time in his career during 2019, while his 23.9 yards-per-kick-return average ranked fifth best in the NFC. Barner becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and he offers special-teams ace ability to whichever team elects to sign the veteran. His offensive role will likely remain limited, however, as he hasn't garnered more than 28 rush attempts in any season since being drafted by Carolina in 2013.

Will play Sunday
Barner doesn't carry an injury designation heading into Week 17's game against Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Barner was upgraded to a full participant in Friday's practice after managing both shoulder and hip injuries. The veteran is expected to handle return duties for the game while providing depth at the running back position behind Devonta Freeman and Brian Hill for Week 17.

Limited Thursday
Barner (shoulder/hip) was limited in practice Thursday, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Barner has yet to miss practice this week despite multiple injuries. His status in Friday's session bears monitoring.

Another limited practice
Barner (shoulder/hip) was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday's practice's estimation.
Analysis: Barner seemingly picked up a pair of injuries Week 15 against the Niners, but he was able to play through the issues during Atlanta's Week 16 date with Jacksonville last weekend. Unless he suffers a setback of some sort, Barner probably will be good to go again for this weekend's season finale against Tampa Bay.

Ready for Week 16
Barner (shoulder/knee) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's matchup with the Jaguars.
Analysis: Barner began the week not practicing but put in two consecutive limited sessions to avoid the questionable tag. The 30-year-old should serve his usual role as the Falcons' primary return man Sunday.

Upgrades to limited practice
Barner (shoulder/knee) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Barner is nursing two injuries, but Thursday's limited practice represents tangible progress in his recovery. He'll serve as Atlanta's top kick and punt returner if cleared to suit up Week 16 against the Jaguars.

No practice Wednesday
Barner (shoulder) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Barner's offensive usage is minimal behind Davonta Freeman and Brian Hill, but he's a valuable returner on kicks and punts. If Barner's injury is serious and keeps him out of Week 16's game against the Jaguars, Kendall Sheffield and Russell Gage could fill field kicks/punts in his place.

Loses fumble against 49ers
Barner caught one of two targets for four receiving yards during Sunday's 29-22 win against the 49ers. He also collected 19 yards on four punt returns and lost one fumble.
Analysis: The seven-year NFL veteran once again served as the Falcons' primary return man Week 15, but his fumble on a punt return early in the fourth quarter set up San Francisco for a Jimmy Garoppolo-to-Kyle Juszczyk touchdown pass. Fortunately for Atlanta, Matt Ryan and the offense orchestrated consecutive TD drives in response to pull off the 29-22 upset, perhaps lessening the pressure on Barner for the late-game gaffe. Barner has committed an alarming three fumbles on the season but has counteracted…read more

Adds two more catches in Week 13
Barner caught both of his targets for six receiving yards and registered a 47-yard kick return during Thursday's 26-18 loss to the Saints.
Analysis: The 29-year-old special teams dynamo has seen an uptick in offensive involvement over the past three weeks, but the volume still has been nowhere near a level that would merit considering him as a weekly starter in fantasy lineups. He's garnered two offensive touches in each of Atlanta's past three games after commanding three total touches between Weeks 1 and 10, but Barner's consistent special teams role, as well as the presence of other serviceable running backs on the roster, will continue…read more

Snags two passes
Barner caught both his targets for eight yards during Sunday's 35-22 loss to Tampa Bay. He added eight yards on a punt return.
Analysis: Sunday's receptions were Barner's first since Week 4 and he's now earned multiple touches in back-to-back games. Far more of a returner than an offensive weapon, he had only two touches through the first six games but has recorded double-digit offensive snaps in each of the past three weeks. The arrow is definitely pointing up, but in most fantasy formats there's still little reason to pay Barner too much mind. Next up is a Thanksgiving matchup with a New Orleans defense against whom he notched…read more

Punt return TD against former team
Barner ran for 15 yards on two carries and recorded a 78-yard punt return touchdown during Sunday's 29-3 win against Carolina.
Analysis: On the same field in which he was decked by punter Matt Bosher (groin) late last season while a member of the Panthers, Barner ripped off a game-breaking punt return TD that helped Atlanta establish a 10-point lead on his former team of two years. Barner provided a substantial boost to an already stellar day for the Falcons' D/ST, with Atlanta's defense generating four interceptions and five sacks. Should Devonta Freeman (foot) be forced to miss his second consecutive tilt next week against the…read more

Gains 12 rushing yards in win
Barner gained 12 yards on his only carry during Sunday's 26-9 win over the Saints. He added 33 yards on a pair of punt returns.
Analysis: Barner now has a carry in back-to-back games after just one touch, a four-yard catch in Week 3, prior to that this season. The former Oregon Duck has been a solid returner for a disappointing Falcons squad, ranking sixth in the league by averaging 25.0 yards per kickoff and 13th in the league with 7.9 yards per punt return, but he hasn't done much outside of special teams. Sunday brings a matchup against a struggling Carolina run defense surrendering 5.2 yards per carry -- 31st in the league --…read more
