Finds end zone vs. Cowboys
Reed caught two of five targets for 18 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 41-33 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: Reed got off to a promising start as he got his team on the board with a five-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. He later added a 13-yard reception but was unable to haul in any more passes and finished with another modest yardage total. Meanwhile, George Kittle (foot) is pushing to return for the final two games of the season, but it remains to be seen if he's activated, given the 49ers' 5-9 record. If not, Reed would once again serve as the top tight end next Saturday against the…read more

Five targets in losing effort
Reed had two receptions (five targets) for 12 yards in Sunday's 23-15 loss to the Washington Football Team.
Analysis: Reed (33 snaps) continues to split playing time with starter Ross Dwelley (36 snaps), with the latter being used more as a blocker and the former as a receiving threat. This was the first week that Dwelley (two receptions for 20 yards) outproduced the veteran tight end statistically, but Reed still garnered more targets with five to the starter's two. The 30-year-old still can post usable fantasy numbers in his current role, but the inconsistent play of backup quarterback Nick Mullens has kept…read more

Finds end zone late in loss
Reed brought in three of four targets for 32 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' 34-24 loss to the Bills on Monday night.
Analysis: The veteran tight end was on his way to a decidedly unremarkable performance until corralling a five-yard touchdown pass from Nick Mullens in the right corner of the end zone with 54 seconds remaining. The touchdown grab was Reed's third of the season but first since Week 2 against the Jets, the contest in which he notched his other two scoring catches. He has put together a combined 10-112-1 line over the last three games while continuing to help fill in for George Kittle (IR-foot), and he'll…read more

Not in sync with QB
Reed caught just two of six targets for 18 yards in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Rams.
Analysis: Reed continued to share the starting workload with Ross Dwelley in George Kittle's (foot) extended absence. The former logged 44 percent of the offensive snaps while the latter saw 61 percent, but it was Reed who commanded most of the attention in the passing game (six targets to Dwelley's two). However, quarterback Nick Mullens did not have his finest game despite getting the victory, failing to connect with his veteran tight end on multiple occasions. Reed remains the preferred option in San…read more

Playing Sunday
Reed (illness) is active for Sunday's game versus the Rams.
Analysis: Reed was held out Thursday and Friday due to an illness, but it won't impact his ability to suit up Week 12. In two contests with George Kittle (foot) on injured reserve, Reed has totaled six catches (on eight targets) for 65 yards.

Uncertain to face Rams?
Reed (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams.
Analysis: Reed was held out of practice Thursday and Friday while recovering from an illness that reportedly isn't related to COVID-19. An absence Sunday could free up more pass-catching work for fellow tight end Ross Dwelley, who saw two targets to Reed's six in the final game before a Week 11 bye. George Kittle (foot) remains on injured reserve, with no assurance of making another game appearance this season.

Sits out practice Thursday
Reed (illness) didn't practice Thursday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The same applies to teammates Dre Greenlaw and Azeez Al-Shaair, but Lombardi notes that the trio's absence Thursday was non-Covid-19 related. We'll circle back on Reed's status Friday to see if he approaches Sunday's game against the Rams fully cleared to play or heads into the weekend with an injury/illness designation.

Sets season high in yardage
Reed caught five of six targets for 62 yards during Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Reed finished second on the team in targets, catches and receiving yards as he delivered his best output of the season in the latter category. He made an excellent one-handed catch on a low throw and demonstrated his still-considerable ability on another couple of grabs. Reed should have plenty of chances to contribute as long as George Kittle (foot) is sidelined, which could be until late in the season. Limited usage in return
Reed (knee) was activated from injured reserve Thursday but was limited to just one reception (two targets) for three yards in a 34-17 loss to Green Bay.
Analysis: The 49ers were starving for any receiving help they could get their hands on, but the coaching staff opted to play it safe with the oft-injured tight end (just 13 offensive snaps). Reed could see his production ramp up exponentially following the news that George Kittle (ankle) will miss an extended period of time. Ross Dwelley is still considered the starting tight end in Kittle's absence, but Reed is the superior receiver and could end up putting up better fantasy numbers even if he has to…read more

Activated for Thursday night
The 49ers activated Reed (knee) from injured reserve ahead of Thursday's game against the Packers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Reed's return provides some much-needed aid to the 49ers' pass-catching corps, which will be missing all of George Kittle (foot), Deebo Samuel (hamstring, reserve/COVID-19 list), Brandon Aiyuk (reserve/COVID-19 list), Kendrick Bourne (reserve/COVID-19 list), Raheem Mostert (ankle) and Tevin Coleman (knee). The absence of Kittle in particular -- perhaps for the remainder of the season -- should open up plenty of volume in the passing game for Reed moving forward, but the 30-year-old isn't a lock…read more

Likely to be activated Thursday
The 49ers are expected to activate Reed (knee) from injured reserve prior to Thursday's contest against the Packers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The 49ers opened up Reed's 21-day practice window last Wednesday, and coach Kyle Shanahan implied the tight end would have been limited at Tuesday's practice if he was required to be listed on the injury report, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. If Reed bumps to the active roster, he'll fill in some of the void left behind by George Kittle, who may miss most of the rest of the season due to a broken cuboid bone in his foot.

To be 'limited' Tuesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Reed (knee) will be "limited" at Tuesday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Reed still resides on injured reserve, so the 49ers won't be listing him on Tuesday's injury report. However, it bears wondering if he'll have to put in a "full" session before the team will consider activating him from IR. Once Reed is cleared to return, he could fill a major void in the passing game with George Kittle (foot) likely out for the rest of the season. Until then, Ross Dwelley will be the primary TE in San Francisco.

Starting role opens up
Reed (knee) could have a major role in the 49ers' passing game once activated with George Kittle (foot) expected to be sidelined for eight weeks, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Kittle could miss the rest of the season with a broken bone in his foot, which opens up a significant target share in San Francisco's passing game. Reed was designated to return from injured reserve last week and is back practicing, and coach Kyle Shanahan said Sunday he's optimistic Reed could be ready for Thursday's matchup with the Packers. Coach hoping for Week 9 return
Coach Kyle Shanahan said after Sunday's loss to Seattle that he's optimistic about Reed's (knee) chances of returning Thursday against the Packers, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: The importance of Reed's status will be magnified if George Kittle (foot) is unable to suit up after exiting in the loss to the Seahawks. Kittle will go for an MRI on Monday, while Reed -- who scored two touchdowns while filling in for an injured Kittle back in Week 2 -- will need to come off IR before suiting up Thursday.

Looking uncertain for Sunday
Reed (knee) could be treated as a game-time decision for Sunday's matchup with Seattle, but coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers' other players returning from injured reserve are more likely to play, Keiana Martin of the team's official website reports.
Analysis: Shanahan was referring to RB Tevin Coleman (knee) and CB K'Waun Williams (knee), both of whom were designated to return from injured reserve and participated in practice this week. Reed followed the same plan, but his lengthy medical history could inspire a more cautious approach. Plus, he might only see a few targets per game once he's ready, as George Kittle has been healthy for the past month.

Designated for return
The 49ers designated Reed (knee) to return from injured reserve Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Sprints on side Thursday
Reed (knee) was seen sprinting on a side field at Thursday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Reed fared well as a George Kittle replacement Weeks 2 and 3, combining for nine catches (on 14 targets) for 73 yards and two touchdowns. In the second contest, though, he sprained his left knee and was given a prognosis of 6-to-8 weeks to recover. If he follows the early end of that timetable, Reed will be sidelined through Week 9. Reed (knee) was moved to injured reserve Saturday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

Could be out 6-to-8 weeks
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Reed may be out 6-to-8 weeks due to a left knee sprain, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Reed was nicked up twice during Sunday's win versus the Giants, suffering an ankle injury first before being knocked out for good with the knee injury. The 49ers placed Reed on IR on Monday, and while he can technically be activated as of Oct. 25 to play at New England, it appears his absence will extend into November. Heading to injured reserve
The 49ers placed Reed (knee) on injured reserve Monday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Reed suffered a pair of left leg injuries during Sunday's win against the Giants, the latter of which has been determined to be a sprained knee. The issue will force him to miss at least the next three games, making his next chance to suit up Oct. 25 at New England. Won't return Sunday
The 49ers ruled Reed (knee/ankle) out of Sunday's contest versus the Giants, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Reed performed admirably Week 2 against the Jets in place of George Kittle (knee), hauling in seven of eight passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns. That said, Reed was in and out during the first half of Sunday's game, having his left ankle examined first before his left knee forced him out for good. He'll finish with two catches (on six targets) for 23 yards. For the rest of the 49ers' Week 3 tilt, Ross Dwelley will serve as the team's No. 1 tight end.

Reed had his left knee examined on the sideline during the second quarter of Sunday's game versus the Giants, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: It was the second time Reed left the contest after having his left ankle or foot looked at in the first quarter. Reed (ankle) returned to Sunday's game against the Giants, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Set for major role again
Reed will have another opportunity to fill in for George Kittle (knee), who has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Giants, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Reed played only 46 percent of offensive snaps in last week's 31-13 win over the Jets, but he ran a route on 63 percent of the QB dropbacks and finished with a 7-50-2 receiving line on a team-high eight targets. He should be a big part of the passing game again, though it'll be Nick Mullens starting at quarterback this week, rather than Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle).

Fills Kittle's shoes admirably
Reed caught seven of eight targets for 50 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 31-13 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Reed put on his best George Kittle (knee) impression, leading the team in targets and catches as the starting tight end with Kittle inactive. He did well to toe the sideline and dive for the pylon for an 18-yard touchdown in the second quarter, then added a four-yard score just before halftime. Kittle's expected to return in Week 3 and push Reed back into a lesser role, but this performance shows that Reed's capable of stepping up should Kittle need to miss any additional time. Increased role on tap Sunday
Reed is in line for an elevated workload after George Kittle (knee) was ruled out for Sunday's road game against the Jets, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
Analysis: In the midst of playing 61 of 62 snaps on offense in the 49ers' season-opening loss to the Cardinals, Kittle suffered a sprained left knee. Meanwhile, Reed logged 10 such snaps, Ross Dwelley got seven, and Charlie Woerner was on the field for one. Due to Reed's known history of concussions, he's somewhat of a risky play, but he did gather in both of his targets for 12 yards in his first game with San Francisco.

Two catches in loss
Reed caught both of his targets for 12 yards in Sunday's 24-20 loss to Arizona.
Analysis: Reed had a pedestrian debut with his new club, but none of San Francisco's receivers ended up with more than four catches. The 30-year-old is no longer an every-down starter due to his injury history and the presence of star tight end George Kittle. The latter actually suffered a knee injury in this one, so Reed could find himself in a favorable fantasy situation against the Jets next week if his teammate is unable to heal up by Sunday.

One of four tight ends on roster
Reed survived the 49ers' final roster cutdown and will be one of four tight ends on San Francisco's 53-man unit heading into Sunday's season opener versus the Cardinals.
Analysis: Reed's football career was in question after he suffered his seventh documented concussion last season, but a healthy training camp in San Francisco has the tight end ready to resume playing. The 30-year-old will be a backup for the first time since his rookie season, but the reduced role could help keep the veteran away from the medical tent. Reed took part in his first padded practice with the 49ers on Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Reed got off to a strong start with his new club, looking sharp while running routes and making a couple of tough catches in practice. The 30-year-old sustained the seventh documented concussion of his career last season and has dealt with myriad other injuries during his time in the NFL, but he looked healthy enough for Maiocco to add him back onto his 53-man roster projection. The 49ers and Reed reached an agreement on a one-year contract Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The rich get richer, but the addition of Reed comes with significant caveats. First and foremost, he has seven documented concussions on his medical chart and hasn't played a snap since Week 14 of the 2018 season. Drawing interest from NFL teams
Three NFL teams have expressed interest in signing Reed, who wants to play football in 2020, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Reed's concussion history, among other medical issues, led to retirement speculation after Washington released him in February. The 30-year-old visited with the Seahawks back in March, but he'll probably be looking for a team that has a greater need for a pass-catching tight end. The Seahawks signed Greg Olsen this offseason and hope to have Will Dissly (Achilles) back for Week 1. Potential fits include Arizona, Cincinnati, Green Bay, Indianapolis and San Francisco.

Analysis: It's hard to see where Reed would fit with a team that signed Greg Olsen last month. Reed cleared the NFL's concussion protocol Wednesday and likely will be released by Washington in the near future, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: A report earlier this week suggested Reed was still in the protocol, but that's apparently no longer the case. Clearing out $8.5 million in cap space will be an easy decision for the team, unless there's some discussion of a pay cut beforehand. Unlikely to stay in Washington
Reed (concussion) could be a cap casualty this offseason, and he may even consider retirement, ESPN.com's John Keim reports.
Analysis: The oft-injured tight end missed the entire 2019 campaign due to concussion symptoms, the latest in a long line of brain injuries. Reed presumably would need to accept a pay cut to have any shot at staying in Washington, as the team can free up $8.5 million in cap space if he's released this offseason.
