Scores TD Sunday
Abdullah had one carry for two yards and one reception for a 16-yard touchdown on his only target in Sunday's 26-23 loss at Kansas City.
Analysis: Abdullah played eight plays on offense as he got more snaps than Alexander Mattison, which was odd in a game where the Vikings were expected to utilize the run more than the pass. Mattison is still ahead of Abdullah on the depth chart, but Abdullah could find extra time in passing situations if the Viking fall behind.

Grabs two passes in loss
Abdullah caught two of three targets for 14 yards during Sunday's 16-6 loss to Chicago.
Analysis: It wasn't much, but Sunday's performance was a step up from the one touch Abdulllah earned in the previous two weeks combined. Abdullah has the misfortune of playing behind Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison. Each is averaging over five-plus yards per carry right now. As Sunday showed, Abdullah can help out a passing game that has struggled mightily this season, but given Cook's abilities as the team's third-leading receiver, Abdullah isn't likely to get too much extra work even if the Vikings…read more

Limited to one carry
Abdullah had a two-yard carry during Sunday's 21-16 loss to Green Bay.
Analysis: Unsurprisingly, Abdullah continued to have a small role in the offense while competing for carries with the red-hot Dalvin Cook and rookie third-round pick Alexander Mattison. What might be more surprising is that Minnesota isn't even utilizing Abdullah's athleticism in the return game despite his place on the depth chart. Sophomore receiver Chad Beebe has accounted for all five of the Vikings' returns this season.

Gets just two carries
Abdullah had two carries for eight yards in Sunday's win over Atlanta.
Analysis: Abdullah played just four snaps on offense in a game where the Vikings dominated by running the ball (172 yards rushing), so he's not going to be a big part of the running game. He does appear as the No. 3 running back since Mike Boone played just two snaps and didn't get a carry. Abdullah's biggest impact will be on special teams as a returner.

Scores in preseason finale
Abdullah ran for 21 yards on five carries and reeled in a 15-yard touchdown pass during Thursday's 27-23 preseason loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Abdullah helped Minnesota strike with the game's first touchdown in the first quarter, snagging a swing pass from Kyle Sloter and racing toward the pylon. The play showed that burst that got Abdullah drafted by Detroit in the second round and what left some intrigue after Latavius Murray departed in free agency, but he probably won't have many opportunities in the regular season. There's a do-it all back in Dalvin Cook and third-round pick in Alexander Mattison ahead of him. Abdullah figures to…read more

Returns to action
Abdullah (shoulder) had one carry for seven yards and two punt returns for 27 yards in Saturday's preseason win over Arizona.
Analysis: Abdullah had missed practice time with a shoulder injury, but it doesn't look like a worry for the start of the regular season. Abdullah has been competing with Mike Boone and De'Angelo Henderson for the No. 3 role at the running back position, but he may make the roster in any scenario since he's likely to be the team's primary kick and punt returner.

Leaves practice Wednesday
Abdullah suffered a shoulder injury that forced him to leave practice Wednesday, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: The former first-round pick suffered the injury during 11-on-11 drills, and it's unclear how serious it is. Abdullah has been competing with Mike Boone and De'Angelo Henderson for the No. 3 role at the running back position, so he'll miss out on valuable reps. Expect the team to update his status in the coming days.

Listed as main returner
Abdullah is listed as the No. 3 running back and both the primary punt and kick returner on Minnesota's first unofficial depth chart of the preseason.
Analysis: Abdullah is competing with Mike Boone and De'Angelo Henderson for the No. 3 role behind starter Dalvin Cook and backup Alexander Mattison. The Vikings could keep just three running backs on the roster, so Abdullah's role on special teams could help him make the roster. Abdullah may not end up winning the punt return job over Chad Beebe, but he looks set to begin the season as the kickoff returner.

Re-signs with Vikings
Abdullah is re-signing with Minnesota, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM Radio reports.
Analysis: Cut by Detroit midway through the 2018 season, Abdullah quickly resurfaced in Minnesota, where he played six snaps on offense and 86 on special teams in seven games. He's never lived up to his second-round draft status, but the ability to return and cover kicks would make him a sensible choice for the No. 3 running back spot. The Vikings recently lost Latavius Murray to the Saints, leaving them with Abdullah, Mike Boone and Roc Thomas as depth options behind Dalvin Cook. With additional…read more

Limited to special teams again
Abdullah played 16 special teams snaps during Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: For the second straight game, Abdullah did not play an offensive snap. He finishes up the season with one reception for 10 yards on two targets. The former 2015 second-round pick was mostly utilized as a kick returner during the 2018 regular season and didn't log a single carry despite top running back Dalvin Cook missing multiple games due to injury. Set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, Abdullah will look for a depth role elsewhere in the league if Minnesota doesn't re-sign…read more

Targeted once in win
Abdullah was targeted once but did not record a catch during Sunday's 24-17 win over the Packers.
Analysis: Abdullah has just one touch in two games in Minnesota and, after two kick returns in Week 11, did not bring the ball out on Sunday. The top of the Vikings' stable is pretty set with Latavius Murray and Dalvin Cook. Though Abdullah's speed could conceivably add another dimension to the attack, you should see it before you believe it. The Patriots' bottom-10 total defense looms Sunday, but Abdullah won't get many offensive chances to test it.

Gets work as kick returner
Abdullah had one reception for ten yards on his only target in Sunday's loss at Chicago. He also returned two kickoffs for an average of 28.5 yards.
Analysis: He played just one snap on offense, and he'll be mostly limited to special teams as long as Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray are healthy. Still, it's notable that he got time on offense while No. 4 RB Mike Boone was inactive.

Lands in Minnesota
Abdullah was claimed off waivers by the Vikings on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Abdullah will stay in the NFC North, joining a backfield that already includes Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray. The 2015 second-round pick isn't likely to be an immediate factor in the offense, but he could get a look on kickoff returns. There's no guarantee Abdullah sticks around for long, as the Vikings may view him as nothing more than short-term depth while Roc Thomas recovers from a hamstring injury.

Cut loose by Detroit
The Lions are expected to waive Abdullah on Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Detroit will bid adieu to its 2015 second-round pick as it makes room on the 53-man roster for receiver Bruce Ellington. Abdullah made 22 starts during his three-plus-year run in Detroit, but the 25-year-old averaged just 3.8 yards per carry while also dealing with some ball-security issues. The offseason additions of Kerryon Johnson and LeGarrette Blount had pushed Abdullah down to fourth on the depth chart at running back in 2018, with Abdullah suiting up in just three of the Lions' eight…read more

Returns to inactive status
Abdullah (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game at Minnesota.
Analysis: Abdullah has put an end to a three-game active streak, during which he recorded three touches for 19 yards from scrimmage and fumbled one time on his four kickoff returns. The latter may have played a part in Abdullah donning street clothes Sunday, but the real impetus likely is Theo Riddick (knee) returning from a two-game absence.
