Backup duties in loss
Montgomery recorded two carries for five yards and hauled in his only target for five yards during Thursday's 42-21 loss to the Ravens.
Analysis: Montgomery also returned four kickoffs for 93 yards, with a long of 34 yards. If Bilal Powell (ankle/illness) is forced to miss any more time, Montgomery will continue to serve as the top backup to Le'Veon Bell.

Serving as Bell's backup Thursday
Montgomery (foot/hip) is listed as active for Thursday night's game against the Ravens.
Analysis: With Bilal Powell (ankle/illness) inactive, Montgomery is in line to serve as Le'Veon Bell's top backup Thursday night. In that role, he's a fantasy dart in deeper PPR formats.

Questionable for Thursday
Montgomery (foot/hip) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Ravens, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Montgomery was limited in practice during the Jets' short week while tending to the two injuries. With Bilal Powell (ankle/illness) already ruled out for Week 15, Montgomery -- if cleared to play -- will likely serve as the top backup to No. 1 back Le'Veon Bell.

Remains limited Tuesday
Montgomery (foot/hip) was limited at Tuesday's walkthrough.
Analysis: Like the rest of the injured or ill bodies in the Jets' backfield, Montgomery maintained his activity level as he toughs out foot and hip issues. There's a chance Montgomery serves as Le'Veon Bell's direct backup Thursday at Baltimore with Bilal Powell dealing with a combination of the flu and an ankle concern. If so, Montgomery could have some PPR viability, as he's hauled in 11 of his 15 targets in 13 contests this season while averaging 9.6 offensive snaps per game.

Limited Monday
Montgomery (foot/hip) was listed as a limited participant on Monday's injury report.
Analysis: On the heels of a season-high 12 touches for 61 yards from scrimmage this past Sunday versus the Dolphins, Montgomery is dealing with a pair of injuries. The increased usage was afforded to him by Le'Veon Bell's absence due to an illness, but the workhorse was back at the team facilities Monday and estimated as 'full' to begin Week 15 prep. Assuming Bell is himself by Thursday's game in Baltimore, Montgomery will revert to second or third on the depth chart, depending on the health of Bilal…read more

Could become Week 15 starter
Montgomery rushed nine times for 31 yards and caught all three of his targets for 30 yards in Sunday's 22-21 win over Miami.
Analysis: With Le'Veon Bell (illness) out, Montgomery got 12 touches to Bilal Powell's 21. Powell suffered an ankle injury on New York's final drive, and coach Adam Gase wasn't sure of the injury's severity after the game. New York faces a quick turnaround with another game coming up Thursday against the Ravens, and Montgomery would be in line for the start if neither Bell nor Powell can go. Bell is likely to be healthy by then, but this is certainly a situation worth monitoring.

Could benefit from Bell's absence
Montgomery is expected to take on an increased snap count Sunday against the Dolphins with lead back Le'Veon Bell (illness) ruled out for the contest, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Cimini notes that the second option on the Jets' depth chart, Bilal Powell, will likely see the most significant uptick in snaps/touches while Bell is sidelined, but there should still be some extra work to go around for Montgomery and Josh Adams as both players move up a spot in the pecking order. Montgomery, who has put up 114 total yards across 27 touches (19 carries, eight receptions) this season, still represents little more than a desperation play in the majority of fantasy leagues.

Two touches in Week 13
Montgomery rushed once for seven yards and caught his lone target for one yard in Sunday's 22-6 loss to Cincinnati.
Analysis: Montgomery has totaled more than 20 yards from scrimmage only once all season, and that was way back in Week 2. He remains locked into a third-string role behind Le'Veon Bell and Bilal Powell.

Six touches in blowout win
Montgomery rushed five times for two yards and caught one of two targets for 21 yards in Sunday's 34-3 win over the Raiders.
Analysis: Montgomery racked up some garbage-time touches, but he remains a non-factor as long as starting running back Le'Veon Bell is healthy.

Fewest touches of four RBs
Montgomery rushed twice for 11 yards and failed to haul in his lone target in Sunday's 34-17 win over Washington.
Analysis: Recent practice squad call-up Josh Adams actually got two more carries than Montgomery, but all four Jets running backs were able to get some touches in this blowout win. The kick-return carousel continues to spin in New York, as Montgomery wasn't involved in that aspect of the game after getting some return opportunities in the previous game.

Back to returning kicks
Montgomery didn't record a touch on offense but returned two kickoffs for 39 yards in Sunday's 34-27 win over the Giants.
Analysis: Le'Veon Bell got 18 carries and Bilal Powell recorded seven, while Montgomery's lone would-be carry was wiped off the board because the Jets instead accepted a defensive offside penalty on the play. On the bright side, Montgomery was reinstalled as the top option for returning kickoffs after ceding those duties to Vyncint Smith the previous week.

No touches again
Montgomery didn't touch the ball in Sunday's 26-18 loss to Miami.
Analysis: Montgomery was held without a touch for the second consecutive game while Bilal Powell served as the backup running back with two carries. With New York preferring the combination of Vyncint Smith and Braxton Berrios in the return game, Montgomery has been left without a role altogether.

Limited to special teams in Week 8
Montgomery didn't touch the ball on offense in Sunday's 29-15 loss to Jacksonville, but he returned two kickoffs for 31 yards.
Analysis: Montgomery watched Bilal Powell serve as the backup to Le'Veon Bell, as Powell received four carries. Nonetheless, Montgomery's versatility still makes him the Jets running back to target should an injury befall Bell.

Two carries in blowout loss
Montgomery rushed twice for nine yards and failed to haul in his lone target in Monday's 33-0 loss to New England.
Analysis: Montgomery's touches came in garbage time, although you could pretty much consider the whole game to have been garbage time given the Jets' awful performance from the get-go. There remains nothing to see here as long as Le'Veon Bell's healthy.

Limited to three touches
Montgomery didn't record a carry but caught all three of his targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 24-22 win over Dallas.
Analysis: Montgomery has recorded more than three touches only once all season. That was in Week 2, when Le'Veon Bell came in questionable with a shoulder injury and Montgomery spelled him with six touches. In other words, owners can continue to ignore Montgomery as long as Bell's out there.

Role remains limited
Montgomery rushed twice for one yard and wasn't targeted in the passing game in Sunday's 31-6 loss to Philadelphia.
Analysis: This was a deja vu stat line for Montgomery, who also had exactly two carries for one yard in the previous game. Le'Veon Bell is the only Jets running back worth owning as long as he's healthy.

Two touches in Week 3
Montgomery rushed twice for one yard and failed to haul in his lone target in Sunday's 30-14 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: Montgomery got two touches to Le'Veon Bell's 22. Bell will continue to be a workhorse while healthy, so Montgomery's only value lies in being a handcuff.

Suits up Sunday
Montgomery (personal) is listed as active for Sunday's game against New England.
Analysis: Montgomery was excused from Friday's practice for personal reasons, but he's not among the Jets' Week 3 inactives and will thus be able to handle his change-of-pace duties behind Le'Veon Bell. It's a role that yielded him five carries for 29 yards and three catches for 15 yards through two games.

Six touches versus Browns in Week 2
Montgomery rushed three times for a total of 25 yards, while catching all three of his targets for 15 receiving yards during Monday's 23-3 loss to Cleveland.
Analysis: Montgomery has established himself as the Jets' No. 2 running back in the early going of 2019, but from a workload perspective, that is not saying much. Le'Veon Bell has dominated the running back touches as would be expected, fielding 88.4 percent of the carries and 86.4 percent of the targets among the position group. Set for backup role
Montgomery could see added playing time Monday against the Browns, even though teammate Le'Veon Bell (shoulder) expects to play, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: Bell got good news Thursday when an MRI revealed no structural damage. He figures to start and get most of the backfield work, but he won't necessarily repeat his 100 percent snap share from Week 1. The Jets used Montgomery on just five snaps in a 17-16 loss to the Bills, yielding two carries for four yards. The running backs will have to work with Trevor Siemian instead of Sam Darnold, who is expected to miss multiple games while he recovers from mononucleosis.

Could replace Bell as starter
Montgomery will step in as the lead running back if Le'Veon Bell (shoulder) doesn't play in Monday's game against Cleveland, Al Iannazzone of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Bell practiced Wednesday after coming out of the season opener with what he referred to as "normal soreness", but he was absent from Thursday's session, instead going for an MRI. He played every snap on offense in a 17-16 loss to Buffalo, with Montgomery chipping in two carries for four yards on five snaps in two-RB formations. Two touches in opener
Montgomery rushed twice for four yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 17-16 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Montgomery was the only Jets running back to touch the ball besides Le'Veon Bell, but Bell served as the workhorse with 17 carries and six catches, including New York's lone offensive touchdown. As long as Bell stays healthy, Montgomery won't see enough volume to carve out a fantasy-relevant role.

Records TD, fumble
Montgomery rushed eight times for 21 yards and caught all four of his targets for 24 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 28-13 preseason loss to the Saints. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Montgomery fumbled on his first touch but made up for it later with a two-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. Ball security has always been an issue for the the converted wide receiver, but Montgomery's versatility should allow him to get some snaps behind starter Le'Veon Bell.

Scores in second preseason start
Montgomery rushed seven times for 36 yards and a touchdown but wasn't targeted in Thursday's 22-10 win over Atlanta in Week 2 of the Jets' preseason slate.
Analysis: Montgomery got the start once again and capped off the opening drive with a one-yard score. He seems to be solidifying his grasp on the No. 2 running back job behind Le'Veon Bell, and Montgomery's ability to convert from in close here bodes well for his potential role should any injuries befall Bell during the season.

Montgomery rushed twice for seven yards and caught his lone target for five more in Thursday's preseason opener against the Giants.
Analysis: Montgomery got the start with Le'Veon Bell sitting this one out, solidifying his position as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart. He showed off his versatile skill set in his one drive of action, and Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News believes that will be a common theme this season, given Montgomery's ability to line up both in the backfield and outside while running and receiving at a high level.

Opens second on depth chart
Montgomery is listed as the No. 2 running back and No. 2 kick returner on the Jets' first unofficial depth chart, Ethan Greenberg of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Montgomery is likely pleased with his initial placement in what should be a heated battle for snaps behind Le'Veon Bell, but his value to the team would increase if he's able to leapfrog second-year running back Trenton Cannon for the special teams role. Cannon struggled with ball security last season and is on the roster bubble, while Montgomery has averaged 22.7 yards per return on 35 career kick returns.

Shakes ankle injury
Montgomery (ankle) returned to practice Saturday, Ethan B. Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
Analysis: Montgomery has been one of the team's early standouts throughout training camp, quietly asserting himself as the No. 3 back ahead of Elijah McGuire and Trenton Cannon, even sharing time on the field with major free-agent addition Le'Veon Bell during scrimmages. It remains to be seen if the 26-year-old can realistically jump over Bilal Powell to earn the primary backup duties, but should Bell suffer an injury of any sort, it's entirely possible Powell and Montgomery could form a backfield by…read more

Montgomery has been impressive during the first days of training camp, Al Iannazzone of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Montgomery is competing for a roster spot in New York behind starter Le'Veon Bell. It's very likely that the Jets won't opt to keep all of Montgomery, Bilal Powell, Elijah McGuire and Trenton Cannon as reserve options behind Bell, while a continued strong showing throughout training camp could tentatively secure Montgomery the top backup job.

Montgomery will have to earn a roster spot in camp, Matt Stypulkoski of NJ.com reports.
Analysis: With New York bringing back veteran Bilal Powell, the team is set up for a healthy running back competition behind Le'Veon Bell. Montgomery's one-year contract is a veteran minimum deal with a $90,000 signing bonus, Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News reports.
Analysis: Montgomery's experience and receiving ability might make him the favorite for the No. 2 running back job, but his contract suggests he'll face competition from Elijah McGuire, Trenton Cannon and De'Angelo Henderson. The 26-year-old hasn't done much of note since 2016 and could end up on the roster bubble if he struggles to get acclimated during the offseason program. Analysis: The division rival Dolphins were expected to meet with Montgomery on Friday after the running back met with the Jets on Thursday, but it's now evident New York isn't letting him slip away. Carves out role on new team
Montgomery had 15 carries for 83 yards and added 10 catches for 65 yards after joining the Ravens in November.
Analysis: A trade deadline acquisition after wearing out his welcome in Green Bay with a costly mistake against the Rams, Montgomery settled into a modest role on his new squad. Montgomery effectively took over the pass-catching role previously held by Javorius Allen. Inactive Week 15
Montgomery (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's Week 15 tilt against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Montgomery appeared to carving out a meaningful role in the Ravens offense just two games ago, but he logged just three touches in Week 14, Kenneth Dixon's second contest back from injured reserve. Dixon's strong showing over the last pair of contests almost assuredly played a pivotal role in Montgomery's inactive status Sunday.

Barely contributes
Montgomery took two carries for one yard and caught one of three targets for one yard in Sunday's 27-24 overtime loss to the Chiefs.
Analysis: Montgomery played 19 of 71 snaps (27 percent) on offense, splitting work with Gus Edwards (31 snaps) and Kenneth Dixon (23). While he seems to be the preferred running back for obvious passing situations, Montgomery has averaged just 4.3 carries and three catches the past three weeks, and he still hasn't scored a touchdown with the Ravens. Montgomery caught five of seven targets for 42 yards and added 13 yards on three carries during Sunday's 26-16 win over the Falcons.
Analysis: Montgomery garnered fewer touches than he did during Week 12's win over Oakland, but his seven targets on Sunday -- three more than any other Raven -- warrant keeping an eye on. Significant role increase
Montgomery ran for 51 yards on eight carries and added three catches for 13 yards on three targets against the Raiders.
Analysis: The Ravens got Montgomery more involved in the offense in his second game with the club Sunday, giving him 11 total touches. Montgomery was especially effective as a runner as he ripped off 6.4 yards per carry. Perhaps the most important takeaway is that Montgomery has seemingly taken Javorius Allen's role in the offense. Analysis: Montgomery took the lateral inside the red zone late in the third quarter from rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson, setting up Gus Edwards' game-tying touchdown run. It wasn't a spectacular debut and Montgomery certainly doesn't fit the Ravens' mold of big-bodied backs, but the play showed that Montgomery can add dimensions to a Jackson-led offense, like option plays, to go along with his receiving ability. Analysis: He'll join a Baltimore backfield led by Alex Collins, that also includes Javorius Allen and Gus Edwards. No lock to suit up Week 11
