Hanging up cleats
Conley was let go by the Cowboys on Sunday after he informed the team that he intends to retire, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Conley signed with the Cowboys in June after a four-year absence from the NFL due to lingering ankle injuries. He last played in 2019 with the Raiders and Texans, finishing the season with 50 tackles (36 solo), 13 passes defended and one interception across 14 regular-season games. Conley was selected by the Raiders in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, 24th overall. His most productive season came in 2018, when he registered 37 tackles (24 solo), 15 passes defended, three interceptions and…read more

Picked up by Dallas
Conley (ankle) signed a contract with the Cowboys on Tuesday.
Analysis: Conley will link back up with an NFL roster after going unsigned since the end of the 2020 campaign. The 6-foot cornerback was drafted by the Raiders in the first round of the 2017 Draft, but his career was partially derailed by lingering ankle injuries, which forced him to miss the entirety of the 2020 season with the Texans. Conley played 14 games between the Raiders and Texans in 2019, tallying 50 tackles and 13 passes defended, including one interception.

Going back under knife
Conley (ankle) will need to get a second surgery on his ankle and will miss the rest of the season as a result, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Conley will end up spending the entire 2020 season on IR after originally getting arthroscopic surgery in January. His fifth-year option wasn't picked up prior to this season, so Conley will be a free agent heading into the 2021 campaign.

Still not nearing return
Coach Romeo Crennel said Monday that Conley (ankle) is still "not working" and that he doesn't "know where [a possible return] stands," Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Conley has spent the entire 2020 season on IR while recovering from January ankle surgery. The fact that a timetable for his return remains uncertain as of Week 10 is enough to shed doubt on his chances of playing at all this year. Houston's secondary could certainly use Conley's help, as the unit is allowing 256 passing yards (22nd worst in the league) and 30.2 points (29th) per game.

Uncertain timeline for return
Coach Romeo Crennel said Conley (ankle) still doesn't have a clear timeline to return to the lineup, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports. "He's had second opinions," Crennel said. "But they haven't been able to pinpoint anything definite."
Analysis: Conley is struggling to get healthy after undergoing August ankle surgery, and it appears it will be a few more weeks before Conley returns to practice and is designated to return from IR. He's served the minimum three-week stint on IR and is eligible to return to action at any point. The Texans could use the help -- their defense ranks 26th with 30.3 points allowed per game -- although there's a decent chance Conley won't be a starter upon return.

Not ready to return yet
Coach Bill O'Brien said Wednesday that he doesn't anticipate Conley (ankle) coming off injured reserve this week, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Conley is technically eligible to return to the active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Vikings, but it appears as though he's still working his way back from January ankle surgery. The fourth-year pro is expected to handle a depth or rotational role at cornerback when available.

Will miss at least three weeks
The Texans placed Conley (ankle) on injured reserve Monday.
Analysis: Conley started training camp on the PUP list since he had ankle surgery in January, but he didn't miss practice after being activated on Aug. 10. According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Conley has struggled in his return from injury and was expected to lose the starting job to Lonnie Johnson anyway, so the Texans hope a few weeks of rest can help Conley fully recover. He'll be eligible to return Oct. 4 versus the Vikings.

Activated from PUP list
Conley (ankle) passed his physical Monday and has been activated from the PUP list, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Conley was recovering from offseason arthroscopic surgery on his ankle before getting activated. The Texans declined his fifth-year option this offseason, so he is set to become a free agent following the season. He was acquired via trade from the Raiders prior to the deadline last year. Following his arrival, he recorded 27 tackles and 11 passes defensed.

Moved to PUP list
The Texans placed Conley (ankle) on the PUP list Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Acquired from the Raiders last October, Conley dealt with injury woes the rest of the season and eventually underwent surgery in January to remove a screw from his right ankle. The Texans opted not to exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, so the upcoming campaign could be his first full one but last in Houston. Before he can commence taking on a starting role yet again, he'll have to complete his rehab from the aforementioned procedure.

Team skipping fifth-year option
The Texans won't exercise Conley's (ankle) fifth-year option for 2021, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: General manager/head coach Bill O'Brien was non-committal when asked about the cornerback's fifth-year option earlier this offseason, but Houston formally decided on Conley's future beyond 2020 on Wednesday. After coming over in a trade from Oakland in October, the 24-year-old suited up in eight regular-season contests for Houston and posted 27 tackles and 11 pass breakups. Conley, who is recovering from a minor ankle surgery he required in January, is still expected to open the upcoming season…read more

Uncertain future lies ahead
Texans head coach Bill O'Brien was noncommittal Saturday whether the team would exercise Conley's (ankle) fifth-year option, Grant Gordon of NFL.com reports.
Analysis: It's a bit odd O'Brien wouldn't directly comment on the matter considering the head coach is also the default top option in the front office, but considering the team traded away a 2019 third-round pick midseason to pick up Conley, it's safe to say the Texans have some incentive to retain the corner. The 2017 first-round pick wasn't exactly stellar in eight games with his new team, but without a lot of cap space and few attractive names expected to hit the open market, the Texans may be forced…read more

Has screw removed from ankle
Conley underwent surgery to remove a screw from his right ankle, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Conley's procedure is considered minor, and the Texans reportedly expect him to make a full recovery without being forced to miss any portion of the team's offseason program. After playing six games in Oakland to begin the 2019 season, Conley was traded to Houston, where he started eight games to close out the year. He made 50 tackles (36 solo), 13 defended passes and one interception across 14 total contests.

Will play Sunday
Conley (hip) is officially active for Sunday's matchup against Denver.
Analysis: Conley missed last week's game against the Patriots with the issue but, as evidenced by this news, will return to the lineup. Now that the 24-year-old officially is healthy, he's expected to bolster the Texans' secondary as they take on Drew Lock in his second career start.

Questionable for Week 14
Conley (hip) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Broncos.
Analysis: Conley logged three limited practices this week just as he did prior to ultimately being inactive Week 13. Consequently, Houston would be without some depth in the secondary.

Sitting out SNF
Conley (hip) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Patriots.
Analysis: Conley was limited in practice all week, but he'll miss his first game of the season. The third-year corner has played nearly every snap since arriving in Houston via trade from the Raiders, but the Texans should absorb the loss adequately with Lonnie Johnson (ankle) and Bradley Roby (hamstring) back in the lineup.

Questionable to face New England
Conley (hip) is questionable for Sunday's game against New England, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Conley was limited in practice all week due to a hip injury, so his availability for Week 13 could come down to a game-time decision. The 2017 first-round pick has played a key role in Houston's secondary since joining the team Week 8, so it would be a notable blow to the Texans' defense if he were forced to miss any time.

Leads in tackles
Conley had a team-high eight tackles and two passes defensed in Sunday's 26-3 win over Jacksonville.
Analysis: With the Texans missing three members of the secondary and losing a fourth (Johnathan Joseph) for part of the game, there were plenty of chances for Conley to shine for his new team. He joined the Texans last week after a trade from the Raiders and has contributed 12 tackles and four passes defensed in two games.
