Gets released
Chicago released Peterman on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: After serving as the Bears' primary backup for the first two games of the season, Peterman is now set to become a free agent. Undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent is now the only quarterback on Chicago's 53-man roster aside from Justin Fields.

Named No. 2 QB for Week 1
Coach Matt Eberflus announced Peterman as Justin Fields' backup for Sunday's game against the Packers, Chris Emma of 670TheScore.com reports.
Analysis: Peterman was part of the Bears' initial 53-man roster cuts but re-signed with the team a few days later. Undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent made the team over PJ Walker following an impressive preseason.

Penciled in as primary backup
The Bears list Peterman as the second quarterback on their official depth chart ahead of Sunday's season opener versus Green Bay, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Despite some confusion that was created when he didn't make the Bears' initial final roster cuts last week, Peterman looks like he'll serve as the top backup behind Justin Fields for a second consecutive season, at least in the early going. The Bears will still be carrying a third quarterback on the roster in undrafted free agent Tyson Bagent, however, so Peterman's grip on the backup slot probably isn't a firm one.

Re-signs with Bears
Peterman signed a contract with the Bears on Thursday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Peterman did not make it through the Bears' initial final roster cuts but has rejoined the team after clearing waivers. He served as the team's primary backup in 2022, but he was competing with Tyson Bagent for that role during training camp. It looked like he lost the job when he got cut, but Chicago is now rolling with three quarterbacks on its roster. More clarity should be gained on the situation when the team releases its first depth chart next week.

Cut by Chicago
The Bears released Peterman on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Peterman served as the Bears' backup quarterback in 2022, but Tyson Bagent secured the role to begin the 2023 campaign. However, Peterman made some solid plays during the preseason and is a strong candidate to wind up on the Bears' practice squad.

Battling for roster spot
Peterman is competing with Tyson Bagent for the Bears' third-string quarterback role, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Peterman provided the Bears with needed veteran experience last year. However, the team has the potential to develop Bagent, which may be more beneficial to the team. Regardless, the winner of the camp battle projects to be Chicago's No. 3 quarterback.

Re-signs with Bears
The Bears re-signed Peterman on Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Peterman, who's entering his seventh NFL campaign, is now slated to remain in Chicago for a second consecutive year following Thursday's signing. The 28-year-old will presumably compete against the newly-acquired PJ Walker throughout the offseason for the Bears' backup quarterback job behind starter Justin Fields.

Hitting free agency
Peterman completed 11 of 19 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' 29-13 loss to the Vikings in Week 18, and ended the season completing 14 of 25 passes for 139 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Analysis: Finishing his fifth year in the league, Peterman may be hard-pressed to have a roster spot as anything higher than a third-string quarterback, as he's completed less than 55 percent of his pass attempts during his career while throwing significantly more interceptions than touchdowns. He's now an unrestricted free agent.

Starting season finale
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said that Peterman will start Sunday's season finale against the Vikings, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Peterman will enter the starting lineup with Justin Fields (hip) ruled out with a short-term injury, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. The Vikings have clinched the NFC North division title and may ultimately rest some starters Week 18, but Peterman's chances of racking up fantasy production in his first start since 2018 will still be hampered by having to work with Chase Claypool, Byron Pringle, Equanimeous St. Brown and Cole Kmet as his top receiving options.

Added to active roster
The Bears signed Peterman to the active roster Saturday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Peterman was called up from the practice squad for Chicago's Week 12 loss to the Jets with starting quarterback Justin Fields inactive due to a shoulder injury. However, the practice squad signal-caller did not see any playing time behind quarterback Trevor Siemian, who wound up playing every offensive snap despite suffering an oblique injury in pregame warmups. Siemian then did not practice at all during Week 13 prep before the team eventually announced he would undergo season-ending surgery,…read more

Sent back to practice squad
Peterman reverted to the Bears' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
Analysis: Peterman received the bump up for Sunday's loss to the Jets with Justin Fields (shoulder) out. He was expected to back up Trevor Siemian, but Peterman almost drew the start when Siemian strained his oblique during warmups. However, Siemian went on to play and Peterman filled the No. 2 role while remaining on the sideline throughout the game. If Fields is unable to play Week 13 against the Packers, Peterman will likely once again find his way to the active roster and serve as Siemian's backup.

Doesn't play Week 12
Peterman was active as the Bears' backup quarterback but didn't see the field Sunday in the team's 31-10 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Peterman was elevated from the practice squad Saturday in anticipation of the absence of starter Justin Fields (shoulder), who was ultimately placed on the inactive list. Trevor Siemian, who had served as Fields' understudy all season, was in position to step in as the starter, but Siemian's availability for the game suddenly became murky during pregame warmups, when he suffered an oblique injury. Peterman thus appeared on track to get the start leading up to the 1 p.m. ET kickoff, only for the…read more

May not start after all
Peterman and Trevor Siemian (oblique) are both in consideration to start Sunday's game against the Jets, with the Bears set to make a game-time decision on which quarterback will take the first snap of the day, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: After top quarterback Justin Fields (shoulder) was officially made inactive earlier Sunday, Siemian had been positioned to start, but the Bears announced 45 minutes prior to the 1 p.m. ET kickoff that Peterman would pick up the start after Siemian injured his oblique in warmups. Siemian later returned to the field for warmups and took some reps with the first-team offense, however, suggesting his injury might not be severe enough to keep him from playing, according to Colleen Kane of the…read more

Pressed into starting role
Peterman will start Sunday's game against the Jets.
Analysis: With Justin Fields (shoulder) inactive for the Week 12 contest, Trevor Siemian had been in line to start, but Siemian suffered an oblique injury during pregame warmups and will now serve as the Bears' backup quarterback. Peterman, who was elevated from the practice squad Saturday, thus represents a lineup option for those originally planning to utilize Siemian or who are otherwise scrambling for a signal-caller in Week 12. In 10 career regular-season appearances with the Bills and Raiders,…read more

Elevated to active roster
The Bears elevated Peterman to their active roster from their practice squad Saturday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The bigger picture here is that Peterman's elevation could mean that Justin Fields (shoulder) may be held out of Chicago's Week 12 road game against the Jets. If that's the case, Peterman would likely serve as the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Trevor Siemian. Peterman has attempted only five NFL passes since 2018, all of which came in a single contest while with the Raiders in 2020.

Reverts to practice squad
Peterman reverted to Las Vegas' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: Peterman was added to the active roster to serve as the backup quarterback to Derek Carr with Marcus Mariota placed on the reserve-COVID-19 list. The veteran did not see any game action against Denver on Sunday. Now back on the Raiders' practice squad, he will likely remain there barring an injury to either Carr or Mariota.

Added to active roster
Peterman was activated from the practice squad Sunday.
Analysis: Peterman will serve as the primary backup quarterback after Marcus Mariota was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. This will be just the second time this season that Peterman is active. In his last game, he played four snaps and had two rushing attempts for two yards, but barring an injury to Derek Carr, he isn't expected to see the field Sunday.

Cut by Raiders
Peterman was released by the Raiders on Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Peterman served as the Raiders' backup quarterback after Marcus Mariota (quadriceps) went down during the season opener, but Mariota is now healthy. Peterman has played well in the preseason over the past few years, though he's thrown only five pass attempts in two regular-season appearances since the 2018 campaign.

Plays whole game again
Peterman completed 18 of 29 passes for 175 yards, a touchdown and an interception in Sunday's 34-10 preseason loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: Peterman once again played the entirety of the offensive snaps to end his extensive preseason involvement. Although he found Nick Bowers for a 16-yard touchdown in the third quarter, Peterman was picked off on his next drive. The veteran now will await his fate as he hopes for a roster spot behind Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota.

Sunday start on tap
Peterman is slated to start Sunday's preseason finale against the 49ers, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: It appears as though the Raiders have no plans to play starting QB Derek Carr in the contest, with coach Jon Gruden noting that Peterman "will start and Peterman will finish, until I get better information." Also factoring into that plan is that the team would prefer not use Marcus Mariota this weekend, as he's been managing a quad issue. In the context outlined by Gruden's quote, Peterman looks like a player to consider Sunday in DFS formats.

Plays full game in preseason opener
Peterman completed 29 of 39 passes for 246 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the Raiders' 20-7 preseason win over the Seahawks on Saturday night. He also rushed six times for 32 yards.
Analysis: With Derek Carr getting the night off and Marcus Mariota (leg) warming up but not playing, Peterman went the entire way and delivered a solid performance on the stat sheet. However, he also took four sacks and threw an interception at the Seahawks' 32-yard line late in the second quarter. Peterman projects to see plenty of action in the Raiders' two remaining exhibitions as well, but he's likely to still slot in behind Marcus Mariota on the depth chart behind Carr to open the season.

Back with Raiders
Las Vegas re-signed Peterman to a one-year extension Thursday.
Analysis: Peterman only appeared in one contest in 2020, and though he ultimately lost the backup gig to Marcus Mariota, it appears that the Raiders never lost interest in his continuing development. Derek Carr and Mariota both remain under contract for 2021, likely positioning Peterman to work as the team's No. 3 option this offseason, though Carr has been connected to trade rumors and Mariota's contract does include a potential out.

Loses backup job
Peterman (coach's decision) is officially inactive for Sunday's game against the Jets.
Analysis: Peterman had been handling the backup duties behind Derek Carr since Week 8, but Marcus Mariota will assume the position Week 13. Peterman saw work in last week's blowout loss to Atlanta, completing three of five passes for 25 yards. It's unclear if Peterman was relegated to the No. 3 job for good or just for Week 13.

Restructures contract
Peterman agreed to a restructured contract that will pay $1 million -- all guaranteed -- in 2020, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Peterman inked a one-year, $2.133 million contract in April, but none of that money was guaranteed. Presumed No. 2 quarterback Marcus Mariota is dealing with an undisclosed injury, so it makes sense for the Raiders to rework a mutually beneficial deal that will likely keep Peterman rostered through the entire 2020 season. If Mariota gets healthy, however, Peterman could be a healthy scratch on gameday.

Ready to compete
Peterman (elbow) is healthy and ready to compete for a roster spot in 2020, Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
Analysis: An elbow injury ended Peterman's 2019 campaign early, but it appears his health is back up to par ahead of the upcoming season. He's the clear No. 3 quarterback on the Raiders' roster after Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota, but Peterman will work to convince the team to keep three quarterbacks during training camp.

Receives contract tender
The Raiders placed an original-round tender on Peterman (elbow) on Monday, Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
Analysis: Peterman failed to suit up during the 2019 season after an elbow injury forced him to injured reserve. The 25-year-old stands to make $2.1 million with the Raiders, but they would stand to receive a fifth-round pick back as compensation should they not match an impending contract offer from another team.

Won't be returning from IR
Peterman (elbow) is not eligible to return from injured reserve in 2019 after the Raiders chose to activate Marquel Lee on Monday, Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: There was a small chance Peterman could've been activated from IR at some point after his stellar preseason, but those hopes have now been extinguished. The 25-year-old is a restricted free agent in 2020, but it's not necessarily a guarantee that Peterman will return to the Raiders next season.
