Though the 26-year-old is capable of turning in a fantasy-worthy effort on any given week, operating in a timeshare makes him a hit-or-miss lineup option.

Analysis: All of the Titans' pass-catchers besides A.J. Brown were limited due to game script as Ryan Tannehill took to the air only 24 times. After missing the team's Week 13 matchup against the Browns, Smith made the most of his looks. Even so, he was out-targeted by Geoff Swaim, who also hauled in a touchdown. Smith has recorded more than two receptions only once since Week 6, leaving him as an unreliable option in Week 15 against the Lions.

Analysis: Smith didn't practice Wednesday, but the tight end's return to a full session Thursday puts him on track to suit up Sunday against the Vikings. Smith caught four of his five targets for 84 yards and two TDs in Week 2's 33-30 win over the Jaguars and figures to remain busy again this weekend, with top wideout A.J. Brown (knee) still banged up.

Sits out practice Wednesday

Smith didn't practice Wednesday due to an ankle injury, Erik Bacharach of The Tennessean reports.

Analysis: Smith logged 54 of the Titans' 62 offensive snaps in the team's Week 2 win over the Jaguars, finishing with four receptions for 84 yards and two scores on five targets. He wasn't reported to have suffered an injury during the game, so it's possible his practice reps are simply being managed to start the week. Smith's return to the field Thursday -- in any capacity -- would support that notion and put him on track to serve as Tennessee's top tight end Sunday against the Vikings.

Smith secured two of three targets for 12 yards and a touchdown in the Titans' 28-12 divisional-round win over the Ravens on Saturday.

Analysis: The third-year pro opened the scoring in the upset with a 12-yard scoring grab late in the first quarter, and although he was minimally involved thereafter, his role in helping the Titans establish a positive early tone was certainly invaluable. Smith's usage has fluctuated considerably at times this season, but he'll look to make an impact in next Sunday's AFC Championship Game versus either the Texans or Chiefs, two teams that were vulnerable to the tight end position all season.

Analysis: Smith lined up behind Ryan Tannehill on the Titans' opening snap of the fourth quarter and peeled off a 57-yard gain on a toss play to the right, the longest run by a tight end in 43 years. Smith hauled in three of four targets for 29 yards and one touchdown in the Titans' Week 14 win over the Raiders.

Analysis: Smith was fairly ineffective until he managed his second touchdown of the season early in the fourth quarter. The score came on a well-covered misdirection play that required Smith to make a contested catch over the Raiders' defensive backs. Despite the positive performance, Smith has seen no more than four targets in each of his past three games, making him a touchdown-reliant producer. Remains unproductive

Smith hauled in both of his targets but netted zero yards in the team's Week 13 win over the Colts.

Analysis: Smith had little role in the team's offense and did even less with his limited opportunity. On his first reception, Smith was caught behind the line of scrimmage for a two-yard loss, which he followed one quarter later with a two-yard gain on a pass over the middle. Though Delanie Walker (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Smith is not a worthwhile option due to his limited volume and lack of production.

Locked in as starter

Analysis: Smith can now play the final five games without looking over his shoulder, knowing he's locked in as the No. 1 tight end in Tennessee. Another opportunity in top job

Analysis: Smith has been solid in his extended opportunity of late, bringing in 13 of 18 targets for 126 yards and a touchdown over that three-game period that Walker has missed. The athletic third-year pro also recorded three receptions for 64 yards in the Week 7 game in which Walker was hurt after just five snaps, so he offers some reasonable upside versus a Jaguars defense that's allowed five touchdowns to tight ends this season.

Analysis: The third-year tight end managed to lead the Titans in targets during Sunday's upset and has 21 in his past four games. Smith looks as though he has developed a rapport with new quarterback Ryan Tannehill, but it's hard to tell how much of that is an authentic connection and how much of that is Delanie Walker's (ankle) absence in all four of Tannehill's starts. Analysis: Smith took advantage of the same situation with a 6-78-1 receiving line in a Week 8 win over Tampa Bay before dropping to 3-18-0 in last week's loss to the Panthers.
