Lands on IR
The Chiefs placed James (knee) on injured reserve Saturday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: James failed to log a practice all week while dealing with an MCL injury. He played in just three offensive snaps in Week 2 against the Jaguars but plays an important role as the Chiefs' primary returner on special teams. He'll be forced to sit out for at least the next four games and is eligible to return in Week 7 against the Chargers on Sunday, Oct. 22.

Won't play versus Chicago
James (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's Week 3 game against the Bears.
Analysis: James didn't practice at all this week, as he's dealing with an MCL issue. The veteran slot man has played just 26 offensive snaps through two games, catching one pass for six yards on three targets. His loss will be felt more on special teams where James is the Chiefs' punt returner.

Missing second straight practice
James (knee) will not practice Thursday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
Analysis: James is still recovering from an MCL injury and is likely on the wrong side of questionable for Sunday's game against the Bears. According to special-teams coach Dave Toub, if James misses, the team may turn to a committee of Kadarius Toney (toe), Skyy Moore and Justin Watson for return duties, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.

Dealing with MCL injury
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said James won't practice Wednesday due to an MCL injury, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: James is likely in danger of missing the team's Week 3 game against the Bears, though he hasn't officially been ruled out just yet. The 28-year-old receiver played just three snaps on offense in last week's win over the Jaguars, but he holds an important role on special teams as the Chiefs' top kickoff and punt returner.

Snares one pass in opener
James hauled in one of two targets for six yards during Thursday's 21-20 loss to the Lions.
Analysis: As has become par for the course since Tyreek Hill was traded to the Dolphins prior to the 2022 campaign, quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues to spread the ball around the wide receiver room, targeting six different wideouts at least two times. James did play more snaps than both Kadariaus Toney and rookie Rashee Rice. Even so, James is unlikely to produce consistently enough to warrant fantasy consideration in most formats at this juncture.

Upgrades to full practice
James (knee) was a full participant in Tuesday's practice.
Analysis: After being listed as a limited participant on Kansas City's initial Week 1 injury report released Monday, James' ability to take every rep a day later clears up any concern about his health heading into Thursday's season opener versus the Lions. Fellow wideout Kadarius Toney (knee) is also trending toward suiting up despite being limited Tuesday for the second day in a row, while star tight end Travis Kelce's status appears to be more in question after he hyperextended his knee during…read more

Limited with knee injury
James was a limited participant during Monday's practice due to a knee injury.
Analysis: The severity of James' knee issue remains unclear, but it's a bit concerning because Kadarius Toney (knee) also was limited Monday. There doesn't appear to be too much concern about either wideout's availability for Thursday's season opener versus Detroit, but fantasy managers still are encouraged to check Kansas City's injury reports over the next couple of days.

Should see more opportunities
James is a candidate to see more reps in Kansas City's offense with Kadarius Toney (knee) sidelined, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: James signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Super Bowl champs this offseason after he led the Giants in receptions in 2022, tallying a career-high 57 receptions for 569 yards and five touchdowns. If Toney continues to have trouble staying healthy, James could have an even better year ahead of him in an elite offense with Patrick Mahomes at the helm.

Signs on with Kansas City
The Chiefs signed James on Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The 27-year-old is coming off a career year with the Giants, catching 57 of 70 targets for 569 yards and four touchdowns as Daniel Jones' slot receiver. In Kansas City, James can compete to fill the slot job vacated by JuJu Smith-Schuster, but the Chiefs likely have bigger plans for both Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore in their second seasons with the team. James is at least serviceable depth.

Solid showing in season-ending loss
James secured seven of 10 targets for 51 yards in the Giants' 38-7 divisional-round loss to the Eagles on Saturday night. He also returned one punt for minus-3 yards.
Analysis: James was the only Giants wideout to make any sort of impact, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards and targets by a wide margin. The journeyman enjoyed a career-best season in coach Brian Daboll's scheme, posting new high-water marks in receptions (57), receiving yards (569) and touchdowns (four) on a career-high 70 targets during the regular season. Continues late-season surge
James caught all seven of his targets for 76 yards and a touchdown in the Giants' Week 17 win over Indianapolis.
Analysis: For the fourth straight week, James led the Giants in receiving yards, and he also paced the team in both targets and catches. The wideout accounted for New York's first touchdown in the big victory when he connected with quarterback Daniel Jones for a six-yard score in the second quarter. James has emerged as the team's most productive wideout late in the campaign, totaling 26 catches for 269 yards and two touchdowns over the past four weeks. Leading receiver against Minnesota
James caught eight of 12 targets for 90 yards in Saturday's 27-24 loss to the Vikings.
Analysis: The 27-year-old wideout led the Giants in receiving yards and tied Saquon Barkley and Isaiah Hodgins for the team led in catches, as James put together his best performance of the season. He's posted a 19-193-1 line on 26 targets over the last three games, giving James solid fantasy value heading into a Week 17 meeting with the Colts.

Leads team in receiving
James (concussion) caught four of five targets for 42 yards in Sunday's 20-12 win over Washington.
Analysis: James was able to clear the league's concussion protocol ahead of Sunday's tilt, suiting up and leading the Giants in receiving yards. It was a low-output game for New York's passing offense across the board, so there isn't much to take away from this showing. The 27-year-old was coming off of his best fantasy performance of the season last week (7/61/1) while producing three touchdowns over his last four contests. Cleared to play
James cleared concussion protocol Friday and no longer has an injury designation for Sunday's game at Washington, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: James should be a big part of the offense, as he's taken most of the slot snaps since Wan'Dale Robinson's ACL tear and is coming off season highs for snap share (91 percent) and targets (nine) in a 48-22 loss to Philadelphia last week. He had a 7-61-1 receiving line before suffering a concussion late in the game, working alongside Darius Slayton and Isaiah Hodgins (all three topped 80 percent snap share with the Giants falling behind early and rarely using multi-TE formations). Questionable for SNF
James (concussion) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Commanders, Matt Citak of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: James will need to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol to suit up. He's making progress in that regard, as evidenced by his ability to participate in practice after sitting out Wednesday. James was injured in the Week 14 loss to the Eagles after scoring his third touchdown in four games.

James (concussion) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: James had been listed as a non-participant on the Giants' initial Week 15 practice report that was posted Wednesday, so he appears to have made some progress in the NFL's five-step concussion protocol in the past 24 hours. He'll have one more chance to upgrade to full activity in practice Friday, but even if he does, James will still require clearance from an independent neurologist in order to play Sunday in Washington. Not practicing Wednesday
James (concussion) won't practice Wednesday, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: James, who is in the NFL's five-step concussion protocol, now has two more chances to practice ahead of Sunday's game against the Commanders. If James ends up missing this weekend's contest, Kenny Golladay would likely be first in line to see snaps out wide alongside Darius Slayton and Isaiah Hodgins.

In concussion protocol
Giants head coach Brian Daboll said Monday that James has been placed in the NFL's concussion protocol, Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: James likely sustained the injury at some point during Sunday's 48-22 loss to the Eagles, which the wide receiver finished with a team-high 61 receiving yards and a touchdown. He'll need to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol to take part in the Giants' critical Week 15 game against the Commanders.

Paces pass catchers in loss
James secured seven of nine targets for 61 yards and a touchdown in the Giants' 48-22 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
Analysis: The veteran wideout finished with the team lead in receptions, receiving yards and targets on the day for the Giants, but those were mainly empty numbers in the lopsided loss. James helped make the final score a tad bit less embarrassing with a 19-yard touchdown grab off a pass from Tyrod Taylor with 39 seconds remaining, and he'll aim to carry over his momentum into a critical Week 15 Sunday night battle against the Commanders on the road.

Gets green light for Week 14
James (knee) was a full practice participant Friday and doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Eagles, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: James has appeared on injury reports for three straight weeks due to the knee issue, but he hasn't been forced to miss game action because of it. With a full practice under his belt to conclude the week, James should be primed to play north of 50 percent of snaps on offense for the third consecutive game while the Giants lack healthy and/or productive bodies at receiver. Over his previous two appearances, James has hauled in eight of nine targets for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Limited again Thursday
James (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: James continues to operate with a cap on his reps for a second consecutive week as he deals with a knee issue. He still was active for this past Sunday's tie with the Commanders, logging 52 percent of the plays and hauling in all three passes for 20 yards. Friday's injury report will reveal whether or not James heads into the weekend with a questionable designation yet again.

Still limited at practice
James (knee) was a limited participant at Wednesday's practice, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: James appears to be dealing with the same knee issue that resulted in him being limited in two practices last week, but he still was able to suit up this past Sunday against the Commanders. In the 20-20 tie, he turn a 52 percent snap share into three catches (on three targets) for 20 yards. Assuming he makes more progress as Week 14 prep ensues, James may enter the weekend without a designation for the Giants' matchup with the Eagles.

Modest production in tie
James brought in all three targets for 20 yards and returned three punts for 18 yards in the Giants' 20-20 tie with the Commanders on Sunday.
Analysis: James worked through a questionable designation due to a knee injury to fill his usual role as a short-area target for Daniel Jones. The veteran journeyman has arguably fallen into more of a No. 3 receiver role in the Giants' perpetually makeshift wideout corps behind Darius Slayton and Isaiah Hodgins, but he's generated a solid 11-109-2 line over his last three games heading into a Week 14 home matchup against the Eagles.

Active Sunday
James (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Commanders.
Analysis: A knee issue forced James to operate under some restrictions in practice during Week 13 prep, with his eventual regimen DNP/LP/LP. That left the fifth-year pro questionable to suit up Sunday, but he'll play through the injury. Fellow wide receiver Darius Slayton (illness) also is available, while Kenny Golladay (illness) is not. Status in question for Week 13
James (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Commanders, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
Analysis: James opened the week with an absence Wednesday due to a knee injury, but he capped it with back-to-back limited showings, leaving his availability up in the air ahead of Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff. Fellow wide receiver Darius Slayton is in a similar boat, as he's listed as questionable after sitting out Thursday and Friday due to an illness. If Slayton ends up sidelined this weekend, an active James would be in line for additional targets from quarterback Daniel Jones.

Limited on estimated report
James (knee) was listed as a limited participant on Thursday's practice estimate, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: After he was absent from Wednesday's session, James would have mixed into some drills if the Giants had held practice one day later. It's a positive sign as the team gears up for Sunday's game versus the Commanders, but ultimately the wideout's listing on Friday's injury report will give a sense of his potential to play through his knee issue.

Dealing with knee concern
James didn't practice Wednesday due to a knee injury, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: With touchdown catches in two straight games, James seemingly is on the upswing in the Giants' passing game, but his health is now a question mark as the team begins Week 13 prep. His absence from practice Wednesday is somewhat of a concern, but he at least has two more opportunities to mix into drills this week before he potentially is given a designation ahead of Sunday's contest against the Commanders.

Finds end zone again in Dallas
James caught five of six targets for 41 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 28-20 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: James led the Giants in receptions while getting into the end zone for the second straight week, although his one-yard TD grab late in the fourth quarter did little more than make the final score respectable. The wideout has seen his role in the offense increase again with Wan'Dale Robinson (knee) the latest New York wideout to be lost for the season, giving James some fantasy appeal heading into a Week 13 tilt against the Commanders.

Active in Week 12
James (knee) is listed as active Thursday at Dallas.
Analysis: Despite being listed as questionable for this Week 12 contest due to a knee issue, James was a near certainty to be available to the Giants offense after the team ruled out seven players Wednesday. As a result, he may be an emergency option in the event injuries hit the receiving corps Thursday. Still, in the wake of Wan'Dale Robinson's ACL tear, James will be a candidate to get in the mix at wide receiver behind Darius Slayton, Kenny Golladay and Isaiah Hodgins.

Status in question for Thursday
James (knee) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game at Dallas, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: With back-to-back limited practice sessions under his belt this week, James has given himself a chance to be available for the Thanksgiving Day game. If he's active Thursday, he'll be part of the solution at wide receiver for the Giants now that Wan'Dale Robinson (knee) has been lost for the season due to an ACL tear. Having said that, James hasn't done much on 21.7 snaps per game this season, tallying a 23-239-1 receiving line on 29 targets.

Analysis: Listed as a non-participant on Monday's estimated injury report due to a knee issue, James was able to mix into some drills one day later. Whether or not he's available Week 12 remains to be seen, but if James is able to play Thursday in Dallas, more WR reps could be up for grabs following Wan'Dale Robinson's season-ending ACL tear.

James (knee) was listed as a non-participant on Monday's injury report, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: James caught all three of his targets for 48 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's loss to the Lions, but he appears to have suffered a knee injury as well. The Giants held a walkthrough Monday, so the injury report is merely an estimate, but it's still disappointing to see James unavailable, especially with Wan'Dale Robinson (knee) likely out for the remainder of the campaign. Scores TD late
James corralled all three of his targets for 48 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-18 loss to the Lions.
Analysis: James was having a quiet game before scoring a nine-yard touchdown in garbage time of the blowout loss. Normally, this performance could be written off as a fluke, but starting wideout Wan'Dale Robinson (knee) left the game in the fourth quarter, which could open up some targets for James in the short term. Analysis: James suffered a concussion during the Giants' Week 8 loss at Seattle, but with the benefit of the team's Week 9 bye, he's good to go in advance of Sunday's game against the Texans. As evidence, after he was spotted without a red non-contact jersey at Wednesday's practice, he was deemed a full participant, per Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site. Records just one catch Sunday
James secured one of two targets for two yards in a 23-17 win over Jacksonville on Sunday.
Analysis: James saw exactly two targets for the third straight week, and he finished with a season low in receiving yardage. After totaling 14 catches for 146 yards through the first three weeks of the campaign, the former 49er has just six receptions for 45 yards in four games since as he has tumbled down New York's wide receiver depth chart. The Giants' pass-catching hierarchy is far from settled, but James doesn't appear likely to slide back into fantasy relevance in the near future.

James recorded two receptions on two targets for 16 yards in Sunday's 27-22 win over the Packers.
Analysis: James continued to see his role in the Giants' offense decline, as Darius Slayton emerged against the Packers. James (ankle) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports reports.
Analysis: James missed the Giants' first session of Week 5 prep Wednesday, but his ability to return to the field a day later offers optimism that he'll be ready to go for Sunday's matchup with the Packers in London. Head coach Brian Daboll seemingly supported that notion earlier Thursday, when he told Dan Duggan of The Athletic that James would be "fine" for Sunday. Dealing with ankle injury
James missed Wednesday's practice with an ankle injury, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The injury might explain, at least partially, why James dropped from 31 or more snaps and five or more targets in each of the Giants' first three games down to 21 snaps (32 percent) and three targets in Sunday's 20-12 win over the Bears. Can't deliver as top option
James recorded one catch on three targets for nine yards and lost a fumble in Sunday's 20-12 win over the Bears.
Analysis: James was expected to serve as the Giants' lead pass catcher with Wan'Dale Robinson (knee), Kadarius Toney (hamstring) and Sterling Shepard (knee) all sidelined. The Giants attempted only 16 total passes, which limited all pass catchers. Looks to be No. 1 wideout in Week 4
James appears to be atop New York's wide-receiver depth chart in Week 4 against Chicago and could see ample targets with Kadarius Toney (hamstring) and Wan'Dale Robinson (knee) both ruled out.
Analysis: It's been quite an ascension for James, who wasn't guaranteed a spot on the 53-man roster when he signed with New York this March after missing all of 2021 with a knee injury. The former 49er has been consistent but unspectacular so far this season, finishing with either four or five catches for between 36 and 59 yards in each contest. Tallies 36 receiving yards
James recorded four receptions on five targets for 36 yards in Monday's 23-16 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: James operated primarily in the short areas of the field, as his longest reception went for only 16 yards. While targets were distributed fairly evenly among the Giants' peripheral pass catchers Monday, James is a prime candidate to step into the potential void left by a knee injury to Sterling Shepard. James has racked up 146 receiving yards and commanded 17 targets in three games to this point in the campaign.

James caught five of six targets for 51 yards in Sunday's 19-16 win over the Panthers.
Analysis: James led New York in receiving yards while trailing only Sterling Shepard in catches and targets. The former seventh-round pick has now topped 50 yards in consecutive games to begin the season. With Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney barely contributing thus far, James has taken advantage of his opportunities, helping his stock ahead of Week 3's matchup versus the Cowboys.

Totals 61 yards in opener
James caught five of six targets for 59 yards and rushed once for two yards in a Week 1 win over Tennessee on Sunday. He added 62 yards on five punt returns.
Analysis: James was expected to work near the back of New York's wide-receiver depth chart in the opener, but he ended up leading the team's wideouts in receptions and targets, finishing second on the squad overall in both categories behind running back Saquon Barkley. James also finished second on the team in receiving yards behind Sterling Shepard, who notched 65 of his 71 yards on a single touchdown catch. Some of James' opportunity came as a result of the second-quarter exit of rookie Wan'Dale…read more

Hauls in TD in preseason opener
James caught three of five targets for 44 yards and a touchdown in a 23-21 preseason win over the Patriots on Thursday.
Analysis: Collin Johnson led New York pass catchers with seven receptions and 82 yards, but James corralled the only touchdown, running a nice route to gather a seven-yard pass from Tyrod Taylor in the second quarter. James is competing with a handful of other receivers for a spot on the 53-man roster, so Thursday's solid showing could go a long way toward that goal.

Signs with Giants
James signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Giants on Friday, Zack Rosenblatt of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: James missed the entire 2021 campaign due to a knee injury, but he showed flashes as a pass catcher for the 49ers during the 2020 campaign. During a Week 9 loss to the Packers that season, the speedy wideout was thrust into a bigger role due to injuries and registered nine catches for 184 yards and a touchdown. However, James' more likely path to playing time in New York will be as a returner. He's averaged 7.3 yards on 51 punt return over the past three seasons and recorded a 97-yard kickoff…read more

Reverts to IR
James (knee) reverted to the 49ers' injured reserve Wednesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: James was expected to compete for a slot role in San Francisco's offense to begin the season, but he'll undergo a knee procedure that will force him to miss approximately six weeks. The 2018 seventh-round pick will remain in the organization after he went unclaimed on waivers, and he'll attempt to carve out a role once he returns to full health.

James (knee) was waived/injured by San Francisco on Saturday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Will miss six weeks
James will have a knee procedure that will sideline him about six weeks, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Given that timetable, James will miss time early on this season, which represents a hit to both the 49ers' depth at wideout as well as the team's return game. Now battling for slotting on the team's WR depth chart behind Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk are Mohamed Sanu, Trent Sherfield, Jalen Hurd, Nsimba Webster, Jauan Jennings and Travis Benjamin.

Will compete for slot job
James is one of the primary candidates to compete for the 49ers' starting slot receiver role during training camp, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: James was considered an early favorite for the job after the team lost a couple of proven options at the position this past offseason. That said, veteran Mohamed Sanu has taken an early lead in the competition, according to Barrows, as his experience in previous Shanahan regimes has led to an easy transition with his new club. Gets more run with offense
James set new career highs in receptions (23) and receiving yards (394) while scoring a touchdown over 11 games with the 49ers this season.
Analysis: James has spent the majority of his first three years as a pro on special teams as a punt and kick returner, but injuries allowed the wideout to nearly double his previous high in offensive snaps with 405 in the 2020 campaign. The speedster maintained a healthy 17.1 yards per reception average even with the bump up in playing time. No catches in start
James started and logged 51 offensive snaps (91 percent) Saturday, but he was held catchless (one target) in a 20-12 win over Arizona.
Analysis: The 49ers were able to pound the rock with continued success against a Cardinals defense that was without Corey Peters (knee), the team's starting nose tackle and premier run stuffer. As a result, C.J. Beathard was asked to throw the ball only 22 times, and most of those targets went to tight ends and running backs. Cleared for Week 16
James (ankle) doesn't have an injury designation for Saturday's game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: The 49ers cleared James for the Week 16 matchup after he upgraded from limited participation at practices Tuesday and Wednesday to full activity Thursday. With Deebo Samuel (hamstring) having been shut down for the season, James is expected to hold down a regular role in three-receiver sets alongside Brandon Aiyuk and Kendrick Bourne for the 49ers' final two games.

James (ankle) was a limited practice participant Wednesday.
Analysis: Aside from lighting up the Packers for nine catches (on 13 targets) for 184 yards and a touchdown Week 9, James has combined for an 11-144-0 line on 16 targets over the last five games. He could be in store for a few more snaps than normal with Deebo Samuel (hamstring) unlikely to play again this season and Trent Taylor (undisclosed) going on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday. James (ankle) was a limited participant in Tuesday's walkthrough practice.
Analysis: James was absent from the 49ers' final drive of this past Sunday's loss to the Cowboys after tweaking his ankle. Although it was just a walkthrough, his presence at Tuesday's practice is an encouraging sign for his Week 16 status. The third-year receiver will aim to upgrade to full participation by the end of the week as he prepares for Saturday's game against the Cardinals. If he's able to play, he'll catch passes from C.J. Beathard because Nick Mullens (elbow) is done for the year.

Makes four catches vs. Cowboys
James (ankle) caught four of seven targets for 56 yards and lost a fumble during Sunday's 41-33 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: James lost an early fumble on a punt return that resulted in a Dallas touchdown, but he bounced back to finish third on the team in receiving yardage as he recorded his best output since exploding onto the scene in his first appearance. He appeared to tweak his ankle later in the game and was not on the field for the final drive. Playing time opens up again

Analysis: Deebo Samuel (hamstring) went down on San Francisco's first offensive drive, opening the door for James to log 26 snaps on offense (32 percent) in addition to his 15 on special teams. The 5-foot-9 burner wasn't able to break off any big plays, which is necessary for him to be relevant in fantasy circles. James only logged seven offensive snaps (plus 11 on special teams) and was not targeted in Monday's 34-24 loss to Buffalo.
Analysis: Brandon Aiyuk (reserve\COVID-19) returned from a one-week absence and pushed James from No. 2 down to No. 4 on the wide receiver depth chart with Kendrick Bourne sticking in the slot. Injuries allowed James to start the 49ers' three previous contest, and the 25-year-old turned one of those into a monster performance (nine catches for 184 yards and a touchdown against Green Bay in Week 9). Limited production in start

Analysis: James was able to stick in the starting lineup even with Deebo Samuel (hamstring) being activated off of IR due to Brandon Aiyuk's (reserve/COVID-19) sudden absence. Even with a large share of the snap distribution, the speedy wideout was only targeted once. The 25-year-old was coming off of a career game (13 receptions for 184 yards and a touchdown) against the Packers, but he was unable to replicate that success, despite rocketing up the depth chart. James secured nine of 13 targets for 184 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' 34-17 loss to the Packers on Thursday night.
Analysis: On a night when the 49ers were down Deebo Samuel (hamstring/COVID-19), Brandon Aiyuk (reserve/COVID-19), Kendrick Bourne (reserve/COVID-19) and George Kittle (foot), James exploded for an explosive fantasy night that was highlighted by a 41-yard touchdown grab in the fourth quarter. Officially questionable
James (ankle) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Packers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: If he can move past the ankle injury to play Thursday, James would likely be in store for the biggest offensive role of his career. The 49ers placed fellow wideout Kendrick Bourne (illness) on the reserve/COVID-19 list earlier Wednesday, and Dante Pettis no longer on the team. Additionally, top receiver Deebo Samuel (hamstring) has also been ruled out. Analysis: A version of San Francisco's team practice report was printed without James' name present earlier in the day, but a subsequent update from Wagoner confirms that James is still dealing with an ankle issue. The 25-year-old was unable to go Sunday for a road trip to Seattle after fielding 23 offensive snaps and 21 special-teams snaps the preceding two weeks against the Rams and Patriots. Analysis: James sat out practice this week and is expected to miss his fifth game of the season. Through the three games the third-year wide receiver has played, he hasn't been targeted, contributing most of his efforts as a kick and punt returner. James could have had an expanded role if he suited up because Deebo Samuel (hamstring) has been ruled out, but now Dante Pettis could handle some offensive reps behind presumptive starters Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne and Trent Taylor.

With the addition of 2020 first-rounder Brandon Aiyuk and the return to health of Trent Taylor (foot) and Jalen Hurd (back), James may be on the outside looking in at a regular-season roster spot. Mainly used on special teams
James had six receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown in 2019, spending most of his time as a return man for the 49ers.
Analysis: James totaled 428 kick return yards and 264 punt return yards, giving some value in leagues that account for those statistics. Outside of that, the speedy wideout was mainly used for the occasional deep shot, resulting in minimal fantasy value at best. James technically started Sunday's win over Green Bay, but he did not have a target and finished with just 12 snaps on offense.
Analysis: James did not have a target, but he did receive a carry for zero yards in addition to his usual duties on special teams. The speedy wideout has been used minimally this season, and that trend figures to continue as Emmanuel Sanders (ribs) and George Kittle (knee/ankle) become healthier down the stretch.
