Let go by San Fran
Benkert was cut from the 49ers' practice squad Tuesday, per his personal Twitter account.
Analysis: Benkert will once again hit the open market after a month-long stint with the 49ers' practice squad. The undrafted product out of Virginia has spent time with the Packers, Falcons and 49ers, but he'll likely have to look for a new opportunity elsewhere.

Rejoins practice squad
Benkert was signed to the 49ers' practice squad Tuesday.
Analysis: Benkert was cut from the 49ers' practice squad Wednesday, but the team has brought him back into the fold. The 27-year-old will likely have a hard time seeing the 53-man roster unless San Francisco suffers another injury at quarterback.

Heading to San Fran
The 49ers signed Benkert to their practice squad Tuesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Benkert was among many other QBs to workout for the 49ers on Tuesday, but the team apparently didn't need long to decide who would provide added depth at the position. Following the season-ending ankle injury suffered by starter Trey Lance on Sunday against Seattle, the 27-year-old is in line to serve as San Francisco's No. 3 quarterback behind Jimmy Garoppolo and Brock Purdy moving forward. Benkert logged time with the Falcons and Packers, but he has yet to attempt an NFL pass.

Waived by Green Bay
The Packers waived Benkert on Friday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Benkert signed a reserve/future contract at the end of January after spending the 2021 season on the practice squad. In his absence, Danny Etling will be elevated to the No. 3 spot on the depth chart behind Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers.

Signs new contract with Packers
The Packers signed Benkert to a reserve/future contract Tuesday.
Analysis: The quarterback spent the 2021 season on the practice squad while operating as the Packers' third option at his position behind Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love. Benkert has yet to attempt a pass in the NFL, but he will now compete for an active roster spot in 2022, when he could be the primary backup to Love if Rodgers goes elsewhere or retires.

Reverts to practice squad

Reverts to practice squad
Benkert reverted to the Falcons' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction report.
Analysis: The quarterback ended up being inactive for Sunday's loss after being called up to the active roster over the weekend. Both Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub are healthy, so Benkert's presence on the active roster may not be needed in the coming weeks.

Bumps to active roster
The Falcons elevated Benkert to the active roster Saturday.
Analysis: Both Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub are healthy for Sunday's game against the Saints, so it's a curious move by the Falcons. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old quarterback will suit up for his first NFL game Sunday.

Signs with Atlanta's practice squad
Benkert agreed to join the Falcons' practice squad Sunday, Evan Birchfield of The Falcoholic reports.
Analysis: Two Cavaliers competed in training camp, but only one could prevail. Matt Schaub, the 2004 draft choice out of Virginia, returns for his age-39 season as the backup to Matt Ryan, while Benkert (undrafted in 2018) is relegated to a practice squad role. Benkert completed 19 of 34 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown in last year's preseason opener against the Broncos, but he suffered a toe injury during that contest and landed on injured reserve. Now recovered, Benkert continues his development…read more

Let go Saturday
Benkert was waived by the Falcons on Saturday, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: It would have been a major surprise to see Benkert unseat Matt Schaub for the backup role, so Saturday's announcement doesn't come as much of a surprise. Expect to see the undrafted free agent end up on the team's practice squad to start the season.

Back to full health
Benkert (toe) has received clearance to resume participating in football drills, Kelsey Kramer of Heavy.com reports.
Analysis: Benkert missed the entire 2019 regular season after sustaining a significant toe injury during the Falcons' preseason opener against Denver, during which he put together a solid performance in completing 19 of 34 passes for 185 yards and a score. General manager Thomas Dimitroff said earlier in the offseason that he expects Benkert to compete with Matt Schaub and Danny Etling for the backup quarterback job in 2020, though the possibility of Atlanta drafting additional competition also can't be…read more

To battle for backup job
General manager Thomas Dimitroff stated Tuesday that he expects Benkert to compete for the backup quarterback job in 2020, Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' official site reports.
Analysis: Dimitroff exuded optimism about both Benkert and Danny Etling on Tuesday, and mentioned that they each will "battle for that second or third spot" alongside Matt Schaub. Benkert made a positive impression during his lone preseason appearance of 2019, throwing for 185 yards and one touchdown while committing zero turnovers against the Broncos on Aug. 1, before suffering a severe toe injury during the latter half of the contest. Dimitroff did not necessarily rule out the possibility of Atlanta…read more

Misses all but one game with injury
Benkert (toe) suffered an injury during Atlanta's exhibition opener against Denver, and he did not end up making another appearance during his second NFL season out of Virginia.
Analysis: The 24-year-old signal-caller put forth an encouraging season debut by completing 19 of 34 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown during the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 1, but unfortunately he lost the rest of 2019 due to what NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported to be a "major" toe injury. Granted, Benkert had a limited body of work in 2019, but he vastly improved upon the 43.8 percent completion rate and 0:4 TD:INT he established during the 2018 preseason. Still yet to appear in a regular-season…read more
