Gains 70 yards in loss
Smith caught six of eight passes for 70 yards during Sunday's 31-13 loss to Green Bay.
Analysis: Getting the start in place of the injured Evan Engram (foot) and Rhett Ellison (concussion), Smith tallied some impressive yardage, though almost half of it came on a 32-yard garbage-time shot down the field late in the fourth quarter. Combined with his touchdown against Chicago in Week 12, the rookie tight end has been a bright spot in what has been a rough season for the Giants. Even if he doesn't get the start in a Week 14 Monday night matchup against a struggling Philly team, expect the…read more

Primed for another start
Smith is in line to start Sunday's game against the Packers, Tom Rock of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Smith caught five of six targets for 17 yards and a touchdown in last week's 19-14 loss to the Bears, playing 98 percent of snaps with both Evan Engram (foot) and Rhett Ellison (concussion) inactive. Engram and Ellison have been ruled out for another game, likely leaving Smith in an every-down role at tight end for a second time in as many weeks. With Golden Tate (concussion) also unavailable, it won't come as any surprise if Smith matches his target total from Week 12. That said, the Sunday…read more

First career TD
Smith hauled in five of six targets for 17 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 19-14 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: Smith tied with Sterling Shepard for the team lead in receptions, and both receivers were used mainly on short passes, as Shepard totaled just 15 yards. The 22-yeard old tight end was fortunate enough to catch a three-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, though, marking the rookie's first score of his career. Smith's usage should last as long as Evan Engram (foot) and Rhett Ellison (concussion) are out of the lineup.

In starting lineup Sunday
Smith will enter the starting lineup for Evan Engram (foot) for Sunday's game in Chicago, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: Sans Engram and Rhett Ellison (concussion) in Week 12, the Giants will be forced to roll with Smith and veteran Scott Simonson at tight end. A 2019 sixth-round pick of the 49ers, Smith received the first target of his career in the Giants' last game Nov. 10 versus the Jets, hauling it in for a one-yard grab. It remains to be seen what he can do with a larger snap share.

Makes first career catch
Smith caught his only target for one yard in Sunday's 34-27 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Smith -- who was picked in the sixth round by the 49ers last April -- was afforded 41 of a possible 72 offensive snaps (57 percent) since Evan Engram (foot) was inactive and Rhett Ellison suffered a concussion during the contest. Engram and Ellison will both have the upcoming bye to get ready for Week 12's matchup against the Bears, otherwise, Smith could make his first career start.

Claimed by New York

Analysis: Smith will provide New York with tight end depth behind uncontested No.1 option Evan Engram. To make room for Smith on the 53-man roster, the Giants waived Paul Perkins.

Hits waivers
The 49ers waived Smith on Saturday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The 49ers needed to make space on the active roster for RB Jeff Wilson since RB Tevin Coleman (ankle) won't play Sunday versus the Bengals. Smith was the casualty in this situation, but if the rookie sixth-round pick clears waivers he'll likely land on the practice squad.
