Let go Tuesday
Thompson was waived by the Cardinals on Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Thompson had been providing depth at safety for the Cardinals since the team drafted him in 2019. His release comes after he was partially responsible for a blocked punt that set up a Rams field goal Sunday. In a corresponding move, Arizona signed linebacker Jesse Luketa from the practice squad to their active roster.

Back with team
The Cardinals activated Thompson off the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Thompson was placed on the list Nov. 24 and forced to miss Week 12's game against the Patriots. Now back healthy and returning to practice, Thompson is expected to assume his usual back-up safety duties behind Budda Baker, seeing the bulk of his snaps on special teams.

Moves to COVID list
Thompson (undisclosed) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday.
Analysis: It's unclear if Thompson tested positive for the virus or if he's a high-risk close contact of an infected individual. Regardless, the 23-year-old will be unavailable until he clears the league's COVID-19 protocols.

Clear of injury report
Thompson (knee) isn't listed on Monday's estimated injury report, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Analysis: The 23-year-old was inactive for Sunday's win over the Bills due to the knee issue, so it's a bit of a surprise to see him absent from the injury report only a day later. Thompson should fill a reserve role Thursday against the Seahawks, but he could have a larger workload if Budda Baker (groin) or Jalen Thompson (shoulder) are unable to play.

Unavailable against Bills
Thompson (knee) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bills.
Analysis: Thompson typically handles a major workload on defense and has compiled 24 tackles (17 solo) and two pass breakups through seven games, but he'll sit out Sunday's cross-conference clash. Chris Banjo figures to take over Thompson's reps behind starters Jalen Thompson and Budda Baker.

Heading toward Week 4 start
Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said Thursday that Thompson will start against the Panthers, Kevin Zimmerman of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Analysis: Thompson appears set to start at free safety in replacement of Budda Baker (thumb), who underwent surgery to repair a a UCL tear earlier this week. It's also possible that rookie first-round pick Isaiah Simmons could see occasional snaps at safety as long as Baker is sidelined.

Unavailable against Bucs
Thompson (knee) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Thompson will miss the first game of his rookie campaign. Jalen Thompson and Budda Baker have slotted in as the team's starting safeties, but Deionte has served in a respectable role with at least a 38-percent snap share in five straight games. Chris Banjo figures to see an uptick in snaps in Thompson's place.

Questionable for Week 10
Thompson (knee) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Thompson did not have a designation prior to his limited session Friday, meaning the safety may have suffered a late-week injury. Generally this is not good news for a player's availability, so it will be worth keeping an eye on Thompson's status as Sunday approaches.
