Cut by Tampa Bay
Laird was waived by the Buccaneers on Wednesday, Brianna Dix of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Laird signed a reserve/future contract with the team in January after spending last season on the Bucs' practice squad. The 28-year-old hasn't seen NFL action since 2021 with the Dolphins, but he'll now look to secure another opportunity elsewhere ahead of training camp.

Sticks with Tampa
Laird signed a reserve/future contract with the Buccaneers on Tuesday, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Laird was elevated from Tampa Bay's practice squad for each of their two playoff games this season, but he was ultimately left inactive. The 28-year-old hasn't seen NFL action since 2021 when he was with the Dolphins, appearing in six contests but getting only one carry for four yards.

Reverts to practice squad
Laird reverted to the Bucs' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: With Chase Edmonds (toe) listed as questionable, the Bucs elevated Laird to the active roster ahead of Sunday's playoff game against the Lions. Edmonds was healthy enough to play, so Laird was inactive for the game. Laird hasn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2021.

Won't play versus Lions
Laird (coach's decision) is listed as inactive ahead of Sunday's divisional-round matchup against Detroit.
Analysis: Laird was elevated from the practice squad for the second week in a row Saturday, and it appeared he could have a chance to suit up for the first time this season with No. 2 running back Chase Edmonds considered questionable to play with a toe injury; however, the latter running back was ultimately listed as active Sunday afternoon. As a result, Laird will be ruled a healthy scratch for the second straight contest, leaving Rachaad White, Edmonds and rookie Sean Tucker to once again fill out…read more

Elevated for divisional round
The Buccaneers elevated Laird to the active roster Saturday.
Analysis: Laird was called up for the Bucs' NFC wild-card win over the Eagles, but he was inactive, as Chase Edmonds (toe) was able to suit up. Edmonds is listed as questionable for Sunday's NFC divisional-round game against the Lions, and if he cannot go, Laird would operate as the third running back behind Rachaad White and Sean Tucker.

Returns to practice squad
Laird reverted to Tampa Bay's practice squad Tuesday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: Laird was elevated from the practice squad Monday but was left inactive for Tampa Bay's 32-9 win over the Eagles in the wild-card round. With Rachaad White, Chase Edmonds and Sean Tucker healthy, Laird is unlikely to crack the game-day roster for the divisional round Sunday in Detroit.

Inactive Monday
Laird (coach's decision) is inactive for Monday's wild-card game against the Eagles, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Analysis: The running back was elevated from the practice squad Monday but did not make the cut for the gameday roster of 48 players, per Smith. Laird has not appeared in a game this season and sits behind Rachaad White, Chase Edmonds and Sean Tucker on the depth chart.

Elevated to active roster
The Buccaneers elevated Laird to the active roster Monday.
Analysis: Laird did not see the field during the entire regular season. He will be available to do so if needed in Monday's wild-card contest against the Eagles. The running back is behind Rachaad White, Chase Edmonds and Sean Tucker on the depth chart.

Let go by Bucs
The Buccaneers released Laird on Monday, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.
Analysis: Laird was the fifth running back on Tampa Bay's depth chart, rendering this move relatively unsurprising. While he was unable to secure a role on the 53-man roster, it is still possible for him to get an opportunity on the team's practice squad. If that does not come to fruition, the 28-year-old will look for a fresh start elsewhere. He primarily played a depth running back role in Miami during his first three seasons.

Breaks off impressive run Saturday
Laird rushed three times for 27 yards and brought in his only target for one yard in the Buccaneers' 26-20 preseason win over the Ravens on Saturday night.
Analysis: Laird logged the second-fewest snaps among the Buccaneers' running backs, but he put them to good use with a 21-yard scamper. The fourth-year pro is a versatile asset that can contribute as a runner, receiver and in multiple facets on special teams. Those traits, combined with his experience edge over undrafted rookies Sean Tucker and Ronnie Brown, could be enough to secure him a reserve running back role.

Solid workload in preseason win
Laird rushed nine times for 20 yards in the Buccaneers' 13-6 preseason win over the Jets on Saturday night.
Analysis: Laird logged 19 snaps and paced the Buccaneers' backfield in carries. The fourth-year pro is battling undrafted rookies Sean Tucker and Ronnie Brown for a roster spot, and Laird could potentially have the inside track to a backup role due to his contributions on special teams. All the players in the competition, Laird included, will get another opportunity to make their case in the preseason finale versus the Ravens on Saturday night.

Tampa Bay signed Laird to a reserve/future contract Tuesday, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

Joins Bucs' practice squad
Laird was signed to the Buccaneers' practice squad Wednesday, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.

Waived by Buccaneers
Laird was waived by the Buccaneers on Tuesday, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Laird failed to make the Buccaneers' final roster after joining the team mid-camp this summer. The running back produced 35 rushing yards on 13 carries and caught four passes for 20 yards while playing in two games this preseason. Laird is a top candidate to join the Buccaneers' practice squad if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

Heavily featured in finale
Laird rushed 12 times for 35 yards and secured all three targets for 19 yards in the Buccaneers' 27-10 preseason loss to the Colts on Saturday night.
Analysis: Laird was thought to be a borderline camp body when he signed Aug. 15, but the combination of his extended look Saturday and the lingering absence of Giovani Bernard (ankle) arguably leaves open the possibility the Buccaneers are at least contemplating the former as a possible No. 4 back. Greg Auman of The Athletic notes Bernard is guaranteed $895,000 if he's still with the team Week 1, and Laird is also three years younger than his 30-year-old veteran teammate while boasting solid…read more

Quiet in Bucs debut
Laird rushed once for no gain and brought in his only target for one yard in the Buccaneers' 13-3 preseason loss to the Titans on Saturday night.
Analysis: Laird, who'd just signed with the Bucs on Monday, logged a total of 10 snaps from scrimmage and five additional on special teams. The fourth-year pro had last seen game action back in Week 13 of last season with the Dolphins, and he figures in as a long shot to make the final 53-man roster with the team's top four running back spots seemingly set.

Inks deal with Tampa Bay
The Buccaneers signed Laird on Monday, independent NFL reporter Dov Kleiman reports.
Analysis: Laird appeared in six games last year for Miami before landing on injured reserve with an MCL injury. He was designated to return from IR at the beginning of January, but he remained sidelined for the remainder of the campaign. Now healthy, he'll look to carve out a role in Tampa Bay's backfield, which just put Kenjon Barner (undisclosed) on IR and has Giovani Bernard (ankle) dealing with an injury.

Miami designated Laird (knee) for return from injured reserve Wednesday, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.

Placed on injured reserve
The Dolphins placed Laird (knee) on injured reserve Wednesday.
Analysis: Laird sustained an MCL sprain in the first quarter of Sunday's win over the Giants and will be forced to miss at least three games by virtue of his placement on IR. Since the Dolphins have a Week 14 bye, the 26-year-old won't be eligible to return until the regular-season finale Jan. 9 against the Patriots.

Expected to miss multiple weeks
Laird was diagnosed with an MCL sprain Monday and is expected to miss multiple weeks, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.
Analysis: Laird suffered the injury in the first quarter of Sunday's win over the Giants and was quickly ruled out after being examined in the medical tent. With the 26-year-old expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks, it's likely that he will be placed on injured reserve to open up a roster spot. Laird has played double-digit offensive snaps just twice this season, so his absence shouldn't impact the Dolphins' offensive rotations.

Ruled out with knee injury
Laird has been ruled out from Sunday's game against the Giants.
Analysis: Laird suffered the injury in the first quarter and walked off the field under his own power after being looked at by trainers. He then went into the medical tent and ultimately the locker room before being quickly ruled out. The severity of the injury is not clear at this point, but Laird's next chance to return will be Week 15 as the Dolphins have a Week 14 bye.

Two touches vs. Jets
Laird recorded one carry for four yards and secured his only target for five yards during Sunday's win over the Jets.
Analysis: Laird was marginally involved on offense, though it's notable that his only target did come in the red zone. The presence of Duke Johnson, who was bumped up from the practice squad versus New York and handled four carries, further seemed to limit Laird's offensive opportunities.

Logs first catch of 2021
Laird secured his only target for 10 yards during Sunday's 26-11 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Laird jumped from the practice squad to the 53-man roster in time to make his season debut Sunday, with Malcolm Brown (hamstring) now on IR. Both Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed worked ahead of Laird, however, leaving him with only enough opportunity to handle eight offensive snaps.

Added to roster
Laird will make the jump from the practice squad to the 53-man roster for Sunday's game against Buffalo, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Laird will be the third running back behind Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed since Malcolm Brown (quadriceps) hit IR earlier in the week. The 26-year-old will likely see a handful of snaps against a Bills defense that ranks sixth in DVOA so far this season.

Signed to practice squad
The Dolphins signed Laird to the practice squad Wednesday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Laird has been a solid reserve option and special-teams contributor for the Dolphins over the last two seasons, in which span he's suited up for 31 games. Though he won't begin the 2021 regular season on the 53-man roster, it wouldn't be surprising to see him bump up should Miami suffer any backfield injuries.

Cut by Dolphins
Laird was waived by the Dolphins on Tuesday.
Analysis: Laird appeared in 31 games for Miami over the past two seasons and totaled 75 carries for 140 yards while catching 33 passes for 272 yards and one total touchdown. Myles Gaskin, Malcolm Brown and Salvon Ahmed will open the 2021 campaign on the 53-man roster for the Dolphins.

Invisible in finale
Laird played two offensive snaps during Week 17's 56-26 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Laird closed out the 2020 campaign with his second game in a row sans either a carry or target. With both Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed available, Laird's opportunities for backfield work effectively dried up. Even if the Dolphins don't make significant additions to the running back room during the offseason, Laird's best-case scenario for 2021 would likely be to begin the year in a reserve role.

Sticks to special teams
Laird didn't garner any carries or targets during Saturday's 26-25 win against the Raiders.
Analysis: Laird's entire 15-snap workload came via special teams during Miami's Week 16 win. The 25-year-old had taken a combined 50 offensive snaps over the Dolphins' preceding two outings against Kansas City and New England. However, with Myles Gaskin having returned from the reserve/COVID-19 list in time to face the Raiders, Laird was relegated from the offense entirely.

Two catches against Pats
Laird had two carries for 20 yards during Sunday's 22-12 win over the Patriots. He also secured both of his targets for 12 yards.
Analysis: Laird worked as a depth and change-of-pace option behind Salvon Ahmed and Matt Breida in Week 15, logging runs of eight and 12 yards. If Myles Gaskin (undisclosed) can return from the COVID-19 list for Week 16, however, Laird's role on offense could dissipate entirely.

Just five touches again
Laird had four carries for 19 yards during Sunday's 33-27 loss to the Chiefs. He also caught his only target for four yards.
Analysis: Laird appeared to be in position for increased touches when Myles Gaskin (illness) having tested positive for COVID-19 just prior to Sunday's game, but he took a clear back seat to DeAndre Washington. It looks like Gaskin could be forced to miss more time, but Salvon Ahmed (shoulder) and Matt Breida (illness) could each have a chance to return against the Patriots in Week 15.

Gets five touches against Bengals
Laird ran for six yards over three rush attempts, adding two catches for 16 yards during Sunday's 19-7 win against Cincinnati.
Analysis: Laird not only avoided relegation to the coach's dog house after fumbling his only carry last Sunday against the Jets, but he also more than doubled his previous season high in offensive touches as Salvon Ahmed (shoulder) and DeAndre Washington (hamstring) sat out. With Miami having waived Jordan Howard on Nov. 17, the 25-year-old Laird may see more opportunities down the stretch for the 8-4 Dolphins.

Fumbles only carry
Laird fumbled his lone nine-yard carry during Sunday's 20-3 win over the Jets.
Analysis: The Dolphins never lost control of Sunday's divisional victory over the Jets, despite recording a total of four fumbles as a team, but Laird's contribution to that statistic certainly won't earn him praise from the coaching staff. He has just four carries on the season.

One touch Week 11
Laird caught his only target for eight yards during Sunday's loss to the Broncos.
Analysis: The 25-year-old played 17 offensive snaps during the contest but wasn't much of a factor in the gameplan. Matt Breida returned from injury and played only seven snaps while Salvon Ahmed dominated the backfield work.

Flashes speed in few opportunities
Laird had two carries for 19 yards during Sunday's 29-21 win over the Chargers.
Analysis: Laird served as Miami's No. 2 running back Sunday, but he didn't see much action outside of spelling Salvon Ahmed (21 carries for 85 yards and a score). With Jordan Howard no longer on the team, Laird could see a slightly expanded depth role. On the other hand, both Matt Breida (hamstring) and Myles Gaskin (knee) could return to the backfield over the next few weeks, at which point Laird may become completely uninvolved on offense.

Barely involved in narrow win
Laird had one carry for a loss of one yard and caught his only target for 17 yards during Sunday's 34-31 win over the Cardinals.
Analysis: Laird was relegated to a reserve role behind Jordan Howard (10 carries) and Salvon Ahmed (seven carries), even on a day when both Myles Gaskin (knee) and Matt Breida (hamstring) were unavailable. He'll remain off the fantasy radar heading into a Week 10 matchup against the Chargers.

Laird (ankle) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post reports.
Analysis: With the Dolphins placing No. 1 back Myles Gaskin (ankle) on injured reserve earlier Thursday, top backup Matt Breida (hamstring) trending toward sitting out Sunday's game in Arizona and trade-deadline pickup DeAndre Washington (COVID-19 protocol) not available to make his debut until Week 9, Laird's ability to shake off the minor ankle injury takes on added importance. Limited participant Wednesday
Laird (ankle) was limited in practice Wednesday, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Laird left last weekend's win over the Rams with the injury. The fact that he was able to open Week 9 as a limited participation puts him ahead of the curve compared to Matt Breida (hamstring), who sat out the session. If Breida is unable to play Sunday against the Cardinals, Laird could be in store for his biggest workload of the season with top back Myles Gaskin (knee) already having been moved to injured reserve.

Week 8 return in question
Laird (ankle) is questionable to return to Sunday's matchup against the Rams, Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post reports.
Analysis: The 25-year-old has been deployed mostly as a special teamer during his second active pro campaign, fielding 88 snaps in that department to just 24 total on offense. Laird was banged up during the second half of a spirited Miami performance, having yet to get involved on the stat sheet at his time of departure.

Season high in offensive snaps
Laird garnered 10 offensive snaps during Sunday's 43-17 win against the 49ers, though he did not register a carry .
Analysis: With Miami carrying a 30-7 lead into the second half, the 25-year-old back saw a higher-than-usual level of involvement Week 5. In fact, Laird's 10 offensive snaps were more than the eight he had between Weeks 1 and 4 combined. Laird hasn't fielded an offensive touch since recording two receptions in the season opener against New England, but with a matchup against the Jets on the Week 6 docket, he may in line for some more playing time.

Laird is not on Wednesday's injury report, Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post reports.

Undisclosed injury
Laird missed Tuesday's practice due to an undisclosed injury, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Laird is competing with Kalen Ballage, Myles Gaskin and Malcolm Perry for what could be two spots on the final roster, so he'll look to retake the field as soon as possible. The 25-year-old's versatility and special-teams chops should make him a strong candidate for the final depth spot in the backfield, health permitting.

Gets competition in backfield
Laird is joined by offseason acquisitions Jordan Howard and Matt Breida in the Miami backfield, Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Salguero projects Laird for the third spot at running back, ahead of Kalen Ballage, Myles Gaskin (ankle) and De'Lance Turner. While he averaged only 2.7 yards on 62 carries last season, Laird showed some skill in the passing game with 23 catches for 204 yards on 30 targets (6.8 YPT), and he also finished seventh on the team with 259 special-teams snaps. Laird fits the mold of what NFL teams usually like for the final RB spot on a 53-man roster.

Lukewarm finish to season
Laird carried the ball 11 times for 21 yards during Sunday's 27-24 win over the Patriots. He also secured four of five targets for 48 yards.
Analysis: Laird once again did most of his damage through the air while struggling to produce on the ground in Sunday's season finale. The undrafted rookie out of California wraps up the 2019 season with 62 carries for 168 yards (2.7 YPC) and one touchdown. He also caught 24 of 30 targets for 204 yards. While it seems extremely unlikely that the Dolphins will deploy Laird as the lead back in 2020, the 24-year-old's solid performance down the stretch may very well secure him a rotational or depth role.

Another pedestrian outing
Laird rushed eight times for 17 yards during Sunday's 38-35 overtime win against the Bengals. He also caught his only target for one yard.
Analysis: Laird logged fewer touches than fellow rookie Myles Gaskin, who rushed 16 times for 55 yards and a touchdown, indicating that he may have bumped down to the No. 2 role on Miami's depth chart. Gaskin was carted off the field due to a left ankle injury in the fourth quarter Week 16, however, and if he were to miss any time, Laird could be in line to handle the bulk of the backfield reps during Week 17's finale against the Patriots.

Lukewarm performance in loss
Laird rushed 12 times for 46 yards and caught two of five targets for eight yards in Sunday's 36-20 loss to the Giants.
Analysis: Laird couldn't get much going in this one, as his most notable play resulted in a Giants safety after the 24-year-old running back was tackled in his own end zone. He operated in a near-even split with Myles Gaskin, who rushed nine times for 43 yards and added two catches for 29 yards. Gets 19 touches in Week 14
Laird rushed 15 times for 48 yards and caught four of five targets for 38 more yards in Sunday's 22-21 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Laird operated as Miami's featured back, but he finished with 17 fewer rushing yards than quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The man Fitzpatrick nicknamed "The intern" is a full-fledged employee now, having touched the ball 33 times in the past two weeks. Set for increased work
Laird is expected to see increased work out of the backfield after Kalen Ballage (Achilles) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Safid Dean of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Ballage sustained the injury during Sunday's win over the Eagles, and Laird subsequently led the backfield with 10 carries for five yards while catching four of five targets for 43 yards. The undrafted rookie ended up playing 43 offensive snaps in the contest, far outpacing next man up Myles Gaskin (16 snaps). The Jets' stout run defense presents a tough matchup for Week 14, but Laird could retain some value as a pass catcher with 12 receptions on 14 targets for 109 yards in the last four games.

Analysis: The rookie back out of California stepped up following Kalen Ballage's (leg) second-quarter exit, garnering seven more rush attempts than any other Dolphins player on the afternoon and finishing tied for third on the team in targets. Though his rushing efficiency was putrid Sunday, he had been economical on a limited sample size coming into Week 13, rushing for 31 yards on his first six NFL carries and turning eight receptions into 66 yards. Small role in loss
Laird carried the ball three times for 20 yards during Sunday's 41-24 loss to the Browns. He also failed to catch his only target.
Analysis: Laird didn't see much volume as a receiver during Sunday's blowout loss, but he did show some explosiveness in very limited work as a rusher. If concerns about No. 1 running back Kalen Ballage's lack of efficiency (1.9 YPC) continue to mount, it's possible that Laird and fellow rookie Myles Gaskin could carve out increased roles down the stretch.

Does damage through air
Laird carried the ball once for seven yards during Sunday's loss to the Bills. He also caught all six of his targets for 51 yards.
Analysis: Laird was effectively utilized as an aerial complement to Kalen Ballage during Sunday's divisional loss. The game script played out favorably for the rookie, as Miami trailed through all four quarters of the contest and was forced to lean on its aerial attack. Laird figures to play a similar role Week 12 against the Browns, but he won't be worth fantasy consideration outside of the deepest of leagues.

Larger role on tap
Laird is primed to climb Miami's depth chart with Mark Walton facing a four-game suspension, Safid Deen of the South Florida South Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Laird hasn't yet played a snap on offense this season, but he's served as a special-teams contributor in seven contests. He and Myles Gaskin appear set to play depth roles behind Kalen Ballage for at least the next four weeks, though the Dolphins could also opt to sign another running back to the 53-man roster.
