Sharp in preseason opener
Ehlinger was 10-of-11 passing for 88 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions in Saturday's loss at Buffalo.
Analysis: Ehlinger got his playing time in the second half against the third-string defense but still looked sharp. With the Colts signing Nick Foles as Matt Ryan's backup, it's not clear if the team will have a third quarterback on the active roster or try to keep Ehlinger on the practice squad.

No. 3 on depth chart
Ehlinger appears to be firmly slotted into the No. 3 spot on the Colts' quarterback depth chart, Mike Wells of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Ehlinger entered the offseason as the No. 2 QB behind Carson Wentz, who's now a Commander. However, the addition of Nick Foles in May pushed Ehlinger down a notch, as the Colts found the veteran backup they were seeking to complement new starter Matt Ryan.

Remains in backup role Week 17
Ehlinger will serve as the backup to starting quarterback Carson Wentz (illness) for Sunday's game against the Raiders after head coach Frank Reich told Stacey Dales of NFL Network that Wentz received full medical clearance to play.
Analysis: After Wentz was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Ehlinger took all the reps with the first-team offense in practices Wednesday through Friday and was staying prepared to make his first career start in the event the former wasn't able to clear the NFL's COVID-19 return-to-play protocol prior to Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff. Wentz was activated from the list Saturday after completing the required five-day quarantine, but in order to play against the Raiders, he still needed to show no…read more

Will start if Wentz can't
Colts head coach Frank Reich confirmed Wednesday that Ehlinger will start Sunday's game against the Raiders if Carson Wentz (illness) isn't cleared to return from the reserve/COVID-19 list, Mike Wells of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Wentz likely will miss the game after landing on the list Tuesday, but the NFL's new COVID-19 return-to-play protocol technically keeps the door open for him to play if he's symptom-free following a five-day isolation period. Ehlinger has been limited to three carries and no pass attempts during the regular season, after completing 21 of 31 throws for 288 yards and three interceptions in three preseason contests. He would offer more of a rushing threat than Wentz, but the quarterback switch…read more

Could start for Wentz on Sunday
Ehlinger may earn his first NFL start Sunday versus the Raiders after Carson Wentz (undisclosed) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: In all likelihood, Wentz, who notably is unvaccinated, will be sidelined this weekend. A 2021 sixth-round pick, Ehlinger hasn't attempted a pass in three regular-season appearances while taking three carries for nine yards. In three preseason games back in August, he completed 21 of 31 passes for 288 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions and rushed 11 times for 55 yards. Behind Ehlinger, Brett Hundley and James Morgan are the quarterbacks on the Colts' practice squad.

Takes over No. 2 job
Ehlinger is now the Colts' No. 2 quarterback after Brett Hundley was released Monday, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
Analysis: Ehlinger was activated off injured reserve Oct. 19 after missing the first six weeks of the season with a knee injury, and he's now the primary backup to starter Carson Wentz with Hundley and Jacob Eason cut by the Colts. The coaching staff apparently has liked what they've seen from Ehlinger so far, but the rookie sixth rounder is still unlikely to see any worthwhile playing time if Wentz remains healthy.

Back on active roster
Ehlinger (knee) was activated off injured reserve Tuesday.
Analysis: Ehlinger slots in as the team's third-string quarterback behind Carson Wentz and Brett Hundley following the news that the team released Jacob Eason on Tuesday. Ehlinger seems unlikely to see the field in 2021 barring injuries to the two ahead of him in the pecking order.

Returns to practice
The Colts designated Ehlinger (knee) to return from injured reserve Wednesday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Ehlinger participated in practice Wednesday for the first time since injuring his knee in the Colts' preseason finale. The quarterback is eligible to return from IR as soon as this weekend's game against the Dolphins, but the Colts will have a full 21-day window to evaluate Ehlinger for an addition to the 53-man roster. Assuming Ehlinger isn't activated prior to Sunday's contest, Brett Hundley is in line to serve as Carson Wentz's backup.

Lands on IR, as expected
The Colts placed Ehlinger (knee) on injured reserve Thursday, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Ehlinger has already been ruled out for the month of September due to a knee sprain, so it's no surprise to see the Colts send him to IR. The rookie sixth-round pick will be eligible for activation as soon as Week 4 against the Dolphins.

Out for September
Ehlinger is expected to miss about five or six weeks after being diagnosed with a knee sprain, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Jacob Eason will be the Week 1 starter if Carson Wentz (foot) isn't deemed ready. Ehlinger, a rookie sixth-round pick, gave Eason a real challenge this summer, so the backup QB spot could be fluid once if/when everyone is healthy. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Ehlinger is dealing with an ACL sprain, putting the timeline around four weeks rather than five-to-six.

Injury causes concern
Coach Frank Reich said after Friday's preseason win over the Lions that Ehlinger's knee injury "didn't look good," Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Ehlinger suffered a knee injury near the end of the first half Friday and was ruled out for the game shortly after. The 2021 sixth-rounder will presumably be evaluated in the coming days to determine the extent of the issue, but it appears as though he could miss some time.

Suffers knee injury
Ehlinger has been ruled out of Friday's preseason game at Detroit due to a knee injury, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: After Carson Wentz underwent foot surgery in early August, Ehlinger entered into a competition with Jacob Eason to be the Colts' starting QB in Week 1 in the event Wentz remained in recovery mode. While Wentz since has progressed through his rehab quicker than expected, Ehlinger remained in the mix to be the No. 2. However, Ehlinger limped off the field at the end of the first half Friday and won't return. The Colts likely won't reveal the severity of his knee injury until postgame.

Tosses two picks Saturday
Ehlinger completed eight of 13 passes for 70 yards and two interceptions during Saturday's preseason win at Minnesota. He added two carries for 11 yards.
Analysis: As expected, Ehlinger got the starting nod after serving as the Colts' second quarterback in preseason Week 1 behind Jacob Eason. Ehlinger put together two nine-play drives that ended in field goals, but the other three ended in a punt and two interceptions, one of them a pick-six. Through two exhibitions, he's tossed no touchdowns versus three interceptions, but he's also turned 10 rushes into 41 yards. With Carson Wentz (foot) iffy to play Week 1 and potentially beyond, the competition…read more

Big second half
Ehlinger completed 10 of 15 pass attempts for 155 yards and an interception, also adding 30 rushing yards on eight attempts in Sunday's 21-18 preseason win over the Panthers.
Analysis: Jacob Eason was given the start Sunday (15-for-21 passing for 183 yards) despite both young signal-callers sharing first-team reps during training camp. Ehlinger was more erratic at times, but he also produced more per attempt while adding some mobility. Coach Frank Reich already stated that their roles would be reversed for Saturday's preseason tilt against the Vikings. Carson Wentz's (foot) timetable is so vague that one of these youngsters -- or an outside party -- could wind up starting for…read more

In line to start preseason Week 2
Coach Frank Reich said Ehlinger likely will start the Colts' second preseason game Saturday, Aug. 21 in Minnesota, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
Analysis: Before then, though, Jacob Eason will be under center first during Sunday's exhibition opener versus the Panthers. After Carson Wentz underwent foot surgery earlier this month, Eason received most of the first-team reps, but the second-year pro and Ehlinger -- a 2021 sixth-rounder -- have been splitting those snaps in recent practices.

Will split first-team reps
Ehlinger is in line to continue to share first-team QB reps with Jacob Eason, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: With regard to the decision to split the team's top signal-caller reps, coach Frank Reich noted Tuesday that "it wasn't (Eason) doing anything wrong. This is a meritocracy and (Ehlinger) has looked good so we decided to split it up. The good news is they both looked sharp today. We'll continue to split those reps." Though it appears as though the two QBs will have an opportunity compete going forward, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin relays that Eason is still expected to start…read more

Handling some starting reps
Ehlinger worked with the starters to close out Tuesday's practice, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Ehlinger hadn't handled any first-team reps until Tuesday, when he was given the opportunity to split starting work with Jacob Eason. Coach Frank Reich praised the rookie sixth-round pick's consistency while running the second-team offense earlier in camp, and with Carson Wentz set to miss the beginning of the season after undergoing foot surgery, the Week 1 starting gig looks to be a legitimate competition. The Colts could opt to give both Ehlinger and Eason substantial opportunities during…read more

No starting reps for now
Even though Ehlinger continues to make a strong impression, he isn't set to get any starting reps at this point in training camp, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports. "Fair question, because (Ehlinger's) looked good," said coach Frank Reich. "But, right now, our plan is to put Jacob [Eason] in the driver's seat."
Analysis: Ehlinger has drawn raves from coaches and reporters with his poise and consistency in running the second-team offense in training camp, while Eason has been inconsistent and often is seen struggling with the first-teamers. Eason is seen as having a stronger arm, but Ehlinger has more mobility and can extend plays with his running ability. With Carson Wentz out 5-12 weeks after foot surgery, it's not out of the question that Ehlinger could get a chance to play if Eason struggles and the team…read more

Taking second-string reps
Ehlinger has been taking the majority of the Colts' second-team quarterback reps at practice, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Meanwhile, Jacob Eason has settled in with the first-team offense after Carson Wentz underwent a foot procedure earlier this week. Ehlinger joined the Colts as a sixth-round draft pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but with Wentz out, the Texas product will have an opportunity to gain valuable training camp and preseason experience working behind Eason, a second-year player who has yet to take an NFL snap.
