Reaches injury settlement
Ebner (concussion) was waived by the Bears with an injury settlement Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Ebner was in danger of missing the entire 2023 season before coming to terms with Chicago on an injury settlement. The 2022 sixth-round pick will now be free to play again this season once he clears the league's concusssion protocol.

Reverts to IR
Ebner (concussion) reverted to Chicago's injured reserve Wednesday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: Ebner is dealing with a concussion, and barring an injury settlement, he's now been ruled out for the entire 2023 season. The 2022 sixth-round pick played in all 17 games for the Bears as a rookie.

Gets let go
Ebner (concussion) was waived by the Bears with an injury designation Tuesday, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: Ebner was likely on the bubble coming into camp, but his unfortunate entrance into concussion protocols after the team's first preseason contest was certainly a setback for the team's 2022 sixth-round selection. Assuming he clears waivers, he'll revert to injured reserve.

Expected to be on roster bubble
Ebner appears to be in direct competition with Travis Homer for the Bears' No. 4 running back role, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Despite Ebner having some nice runs during camp while also bringing value on special teams, he may face an uphill battle for a roster spot against Homer. With Homer being counted on as a key special teamer, Ebner may need to overcome the odds to make the Week 1 roster.

May be on roster bubble
Ebner is expected to compete with Travis Homer for the final running back spot on the Bears' roster, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Ebner was drafted in the sixth round in 2022, but he rushed for just 2.3 yards per carry on 24 attempts. When David Montgomery missed time in Weeks 3 and 4, Ebner did little with his opportunity by rushing 13 times for 43 yards and catching two passes for eight yards. In the offseason, the Bears signed Homer to a two-year deal. Homer was a receiving back and special teams contributor in his four years with the Seahawks. Limited usage in rookie season
Ebner was targeted twice in the Bears' 29-13 loss to the Vikings in Week 18, and ended the season with 24 carries for 54 yards along with two receptions for 16 yards.
Analysis: Ebner saw most of his opportunities as a running back when David Montgomery missed time during Weeks 3 and 4, but he never played significant snaps in any other game the rest of the season. It's likely that he'll be counted on to continue his role as a kick returner next year, and if he shows progress as a running back, he could see enhanced opportunities in that capacity as well. He's under contract through 2025.

Little production in loss
Ebner failed to catch his long pass target in the Bears' 25-20 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
Analysis: Ebner did recover a Chicago fumble, which helped his team, but he likely didn't benefit many fantasy managers. With Khalil Herbert (hip) nearing a return, the former will likely play the majority of his snaps on special teams, giving him minimal fantasy value.

Takes on secondary role in loss
Ebner rushed eight times for six yards in the Bears' 27-24 loss to the Falcons on Sunday.
Analysis: Although the Bears ran the ball 41 times, 35 of those carries went to David Montgomery and Justin Fields, leaving just a small number of touches for Ebner. It would appear that Ebner will see a limited number of touches while Khalil Herbert (hip) spends time on injured reserve. However, should there be any games that are decided early, Ebner could be a candidate to see significant work in those late-game situations.

Next man up sans Herbert
Ebner will step into the No. 2 running back role after the Bears placed Khalil Herbert (hip) on injured reserve Tuesday, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Analysis: When David Montgomery was sidelined for two games earlier in the season, Ebner operated behind Hebert and rushed 13 times for 43 yards while securing two of three targets for eight yards across Weeks 3 and 4. The rookie sixth-round pick could reclaim a similar workload now that Herbert is due to miss at least the Bears' next four games. Montgomery has recorded more than 15 rushing attempts just once this season, so there's certainly room for Ebner to carve out a useful role for fantasy purposes.

Negative yardage
Ebner rushed twice but lost five yards in the Bears' 49-29 loss to the Cowboys on Sunday.
Analysis: Ebener had his opportunities when the game was out of hand. When David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert are healthy, he sees very few snaps when the games are competitive. Unless his role changes, he doesn't see enough work to consistently help most fantasy teams.

Sees mop-up duty
Ebner rushed three times for eight yards in the Bears 33-14 win over the Patriots on Monday.
Analysis: Earning his opportunities in the latter moments of a blowout victory, this was the first time Ebner has touched the ball on offense since Week 4, and he has 59 total yards on the season. Unless David Montgomery or Khalil Herbert miss time, Ebner may not see enough work to be a reliable fantasy option.

Handles eight touches
Ebner rushed six times for 20 yards, and he caught two passes for eight yards in the Bears' 20-12 loss to the Giants on Sunday.
Analysis: Ebner was the clear backup to Khalil Herbert with David Montgomery (ankle) inactive. Aside from an 11-yard run, Ebner failed to generate chunks of yardage with his limited work. He should retain a similar role in the offense until Montgomery returns to action.

Steps into prominent role
Ebner rushed seven times for 23 yards in the Bears' 23-20 win over the Texans on Sunday.
Analysis: Ebner saw second-string running back duties when David Montgomery left the game with an ankle injury. Despite profiling as a strong receiving back, with Justin Fields throwing just 17 passes, Ebner had one target. If Montgomery misses time, Ebner will likely resume the the No. 2 role, giving him increased fantasy value.

Avoids injury report
Ebner (ankle) was not listed on the Bears' injury report Wednesday.
Analysis: Ebner missed Chicago's preseason finale Aug. 27 after picking up an ankle injury during the team's previous exhibition nine days earlier. Now, the rookie sixth-round pick should be ready to step into a reserve role behind David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert leading into the Bears' season-opener against San Francisco on Sunday.

Sticks on roster
Ebner (ankle) is one of three running backs on Chicago's initial 53-man roster, Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com reports.
Analysis: It's an excellent sign for the rookie sixth-round pick, both in terms of his standing with the team and his recent ankle injury. Ebner doesn't figure to have much of a role on offense early in the season behind David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert, but the ankle won't necessarily be a limiting factor.

May sit out Saturday
Ebner (ankle) missed Thursday's practice, making it unlikely he plays Saturday against the Browns, Alyssa Barbieri of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Ebner injured his ankle in the Bears' last game against the Seahawks and hasn't practiced since. He had been battling with Darrynton Evans for the No. 3 running back role behind David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert. If he sits out, he'll have two weeks to get ready for the regular-season opener.

Injures ankle Thursday
Ebner suffered an ankle injury during Thursday's preseason game in Seattle, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: It's unclear exactly how Ebner picked up the issue, but he was the second Bears running back on the field in the team's second exhibition behind Khalil Herbert with David Montgomery (undisclosed) sidelined. Prior to his departure in the second quarter, Ebner took nine carries for 29 yards.

Looking to cement role
Ebner is expected to receive plenty of reps in Thursday's preseason game against the Seahawks, Alyssa Barbieri of USA Today reports.
Analysis: After scoring a touchdown and turning seven touches into 43 yards in last week's preseason opener, Ebner will continue to make a push to secure the No. 3 running back role behind David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert. Ebner could also be a factor on special teams after posting 53 yards in the return game last week against the Chiefs.

Shines with reserves
Ebner rushed six times for 31 yards and caught his only target for a 12-yard touchdown in the Bears' 19-14 win over the Chiefs on Sunday.
Analysis: Ebner ran a pass route out of the backfield, resulting in a scoring pass from backup quarterback Trevor Siemian. In addition, Ebner was the only Chicago running back to average more than 3.7 yards per carry, though he had his production against the Kansas City backups. Regardless, it was a solid professional debut, as he tries to win the No. 3 running back role behind David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert.

Could carve out role
Although David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert are atop the Bears' running back depth chart, Ebner's versatility could help him earn a role, Alyssa Barbieri of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Ebner was drafted in the sixth round of this year's draft. His potential could eventually allow him to function as a rusher, receiver and punt returner. But unless Montgomery or Herbert miss time, it will be difficult for the rookie to see significant snaps on offense. For now, he's most likely competing for a role in the return game.
