Backfield depth added
Strong faces added competition for work in the Cleveland backfield following the team's addition of Kareem Hunt on Wednesday, Kelsey Russo of the Browns' official site reports.
Analysis: In the wake of Nick Chubb's season-ending knee injury, Strong's profile in the Browns offense initially looked as though it could increase. While that's still possible to some degree, Strong's change-of-pace touches now are less clear following the signing of Hunt, who played for Cleveland from 2019 through 2022. For now, Jerome Ford is slated to work as the team's lead back, beginning with Sunday's game against the Titans. Assuming Hunt is active Week 3, he could end up serving as the top…read more

Role likely to grow
Strong had two carries for one yard and a touchdown and failed to catch his only target in Monday's 26-22 loss to the Steelers.
Analysis: Strong, who played only 13 special-teams snaps in Week 1, saw his first action of the season on offense after the Browns lost Nick Chubb to a potentially season-ending knee injury. Jerome Ford will move to the No. 1 spot on the depth chart while Strong becomes the primary backup. The 24-year-old was selected by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2022 draft and was mainly a special-teams contributor during his rookie season, producing 100 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries over 49…read more

Special teams only in opener
Strong did not play an offensive snap in Sunday's 24-3 win over the Bengals in Week 1.
Analysis: Strong operated as the No. 3 back but did not see the field while the Browns were on offense. The former Patriot instead played 13 snaps on special teams while Nick Chubb and Jerome Ford handled all the backfield duties. Strong, who was traded to Cleveland in late August, could see a bigger role in the backfield once he's more familiar with the playbook.

Could have role early on?
Strong may have a role in the Browns offense to start the season, Irie Harris of cleveland.com reports.
Analysis: Strong is one of three RBs on the initial 53-man roster, along with Nick Chubb and Jerome Ford, after the Browns traded OT Tyrone Wheatley to New England for the running back this past Sunday. While Ford's recent return to practice after battling a hamstring injury suggests Strong may not really be needed Week 1, a small role on offense isn't out of the question, nor is playing time on special teams.

Traded to Cleveland
The Patriots traded Strong to the Browns in exchange for Tyrone Wheatley on Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: With the addition of Ezekiel Elliott, Strong found himself buried on New England's running back depth chart, which is led by Rhamondre Stevenson, and was losing ground to fellow 2022 draft pick Kevin Harris. In Cleveland, there's less of a logjam behind Nick Chubb, so Strong will be competing with Jerome Ford, Demetric Felton and others for backup opportunities.

Works behind Harris
Strong took eight carries for 31 yards and caught both of his targets for 13 yards in Friday's 23-7 preseason loss to the Titans.
Analysis: Strong proved his health after spending about a week and a half in concussion protocol, though he came off the bench behind fellow 2022 draft pick Kevin Harris. With Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott locked in atop the depth chart and Ty Montgomery (leg) potentially competing for a role if/when he can get healthy, it isn't clear the Patriots will keep both Strong and Harris. It does seem Strong may have helped his case Friday night when he was one of the few bright spots on an ugly night…read more

Back at practice Tuesday
Strong (concussion) returned to practice Tuesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Strong is sporting a red, non-contact jersey for Tuesday's session, but this puts him on track to play in the preseason finale Friday against the Titans after he missed last weekend's exhibition. Strong is trying to carve out a pass-catching role in New England's offense behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott.

Expected back this week
Strong (concussion) is expected to rejoin the team this week after not traveling to Green Bay for Saturday's preseason contest, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The report relays that Strong's recent absence from practice was due to him being in the NFL's concussion protocol, however it looks like the 2022 fourth-rounder will be back on the field in the coming days. While the Patriots' addition of Ezekiel Elliott (to work in tandem with Rhamondre Stevenson) impacts Strong's fantasy value in 2023, the 24-year-old's speed does give him a chance to earn a role in a backfield that also includes Kevin Harris, J.J. Taylor and Ty Montgomery, the latter of…read more

Not playing Saturday
Strong (undisclosed) is not in uniform for Saturday's preseason game against the Packers, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Analysis: Strong has been missing practice time this week with an undisclosed injury. With Ty Montgomery (undisclosed) also sidelined, we should expect to see plenty of J.J. Taylor and Kevin Harris in Saturday's exhibition. Rhamondre Stevenson and newcomer Ezekiel Elliott could also make cameos.

Remains sidelined
Strong (undisclosed) didn't practice Thursday, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Ty Montgomery (leg) also continued to miss practice Thursday, which likely means the duo won't suit up for Saturday's preseason game against the Packers. Once Strong is back on the practice field, he'll look to secure a change-of-pace role in a New England backfield that is slated to be led by the one-two punch of Rhamondre Stevenson and newcomer Ezekiel Elliott.

Absent from practice Monday
Strong (undisclosed) didn't practice Monday, Mark Daniels of MassLive reports.
Analysis: With Strong and Ty Montgomery (leg) both unavailable Monday, more reps were left over for Kevin Harris, J.J. Taylor and CJ Marable behind Rhamondre Stevenson. Strong will look to make a prompt return, as he's looking to secure the primary backup role in his second NFL season. The 2022 fourth-round pick started Thursday's preseason opener against Houston and turned nine touches into 33 scrimmage yards.

Gets nine touches
Strong rushed six times for 21 yards and caught all three of his targets for 12 yards in Thursday night's 20-9 loss to the Texans in the preseason opener.
Analysis: Strong started but alternated with fellow tailback Kevin Harris, who rushed eight times for 10 yards. The pair of running backs are currently competing with Ty Montgomery (leg) -- who sat out Thursday's contest -- for slotting behind ascending starter Rhamondre Stevenson.

Expected to see action Thursday
Strong is among the younger Patriots players who is expected to see some early action in Thursday's preseason opener against the Texans, Paul Perillo of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: While head coach Bill Belichick hasn't specifically outlined his plans for who will play in Thursday, based on the way Tuesday's practice played out, the Patriots appear set to rest or limit a number of key players. As a result, the door could be open for the likes of Strong, fellow running back Kevin Harris, and receivers Tyquan Thornton, Kayshon Boutte and Demario Douglas to get some run with the team's reserve quarterbacks versus Houston. Could see increased role
Strong is in line to compete for complementary snaps behind top back Rhamondre Stevenson heading into his second professional season, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Analysis: With Damien Harris now in Buffalo and with the Patriots recently cutting James Robinson, backfield snaps behind Stevenson are up for grabs. With that in mind, the speedy Strong -- who logged just 10 carries as a rookie -- has a chance to carve out a change-of-pace role this coming season. Veterans Ty Montgomery and J.J. Taylor and 2022 sixth-round pick Kevin Harris represent Strong's competition for the No. 2 role.

Logs 10 carries in rookie season
Strong finished the 2022 season with 10 carries for 100 yards and a TD in 15 games to go along with seven catches (on seven targets) for 42 yards.
Analysis: The 2022 fourth-rounder saw limited action as a rookie, with Rhamondre Stevenson and Damien Harris handling the bulk of the Patriots' backfield duties. With Harris slated to become a free agent this offseason, there could be snaps and touches up for grabs next season for Strong, as well as 2022 sixth-rounder Kevin Harris. Catches two passes in Week 16
Strong caught both of his targets for 10 yards in Saturday's 22-18 loss to the Bengals.
Analysis: Even though Damien Harris (thigh) remained out Saturday, Strong logged just two snaps in the contest, while working behind Rhamondre Stevenson (51snaps), per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. As long as Stevenson and/or Harris are available, Strong can't be counted on to see enough touches to merit fantasy lineup consideration.

Limited touches Sunday
Strong carried the ball four times for 25 yards and caught all three of his targets for 12 yards in Sunday's 30-24 loss to the Raiders.
Analysis: The rookie was coming off a big performance against the Cardinals, but with Rhamondre Stevenson apparently fully recovered from his ankle injury and having a massive day, there weren't many touches left over for Strong in the New England backfield. He may have played well enough over the last two weeks to secure the No. 2 spot on the depth chart even once Damien Harris (thigh) is healthy, but his fantasy outlook seems dim for Week 16 against a Bengals defense that has stifled the likes of Nick…read more

Excels with extra opportunity
Strong rushed five times for 70 yards and a touchdown and brought in both targets for 20 yards in the Patriots' 27-13 win over the Cardinals on Monday night.
Analysis: A bulk of Strong's production came on a game-long 44-yard run on the Patriots' first possession of the second half, with the rookie taking the ball to the Cardinals' 12-yard line to set up a Nick Folk 23-yard field goal. Strong then capped off the scoring on the night with a three-yard touchdown rush early in the fourth quarter, his first NFL trip to the end zone. Strong is a candidate to see extra work Thursday against the Bills, Mark Daniels reports.

Works on special teams Sunday
Strong was on the field for 18 special-teams snaps in Sunday's 26-3 win over the Colts.
Analysis: Though fellow RB Damien Harris (illness) was inactive, Strong didn't log any snaps on offense Sunday, while J.J. Taylor served as Rhamondre Stevenson's top backup in the contest. Strong remains off the fantasy radar for now, having recorded just one carry for five yards through seven games.

Listed as active Sunday
Strong (hamstring) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Colts, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Analysis: With Damien Harris (illness) inactive for the contest, look for Rhamondre Stevenson to handle the bulk of the Patriots' backfield duties on Sunday, while J.J. Taylor and Strong are available to work in complementary roles. Neither of two backups are high-percentage fantasy lineup options in Week 9, however.

Listed as questionable for Week 9
Strong (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Colts, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Analysis: A hamstring issue limited Strong at practice this week, with his status of added import in terms of the Patriots' backfield depth Week 9, given that Damien Harris (illness) also is listed as questionable for the contest. If Harris ends up being unable to play this weekend while Strong is available, the rookie fourth-rounder still would be a speculative fantasy option, however, with Rhamondre Stevenson capable of absorbing the bulk of the RB touches in the event of a Harris absence.

Records 13 snaps on special teams
Strong logged 13 special-teams snaps in Sunday's 22-17 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Through six games this season, the 2022 fourth-rounder -- who didn't see any snaps on offense Week 8 -- has recorded just one carry for five yards. One carry in Week 6
Strong logged four of a possible 70 snaps on offense in Sunday's 38-15 win over the Browns, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: With Damien Harris (hamstring) inactive Sunday, Strong -- who carried once for five yards -- and Kevin Harris (12 snaps, three carries) both suited up for the contest, but as expected Rhamondre Stevenson handled the bulk of the team's backfield work. Strong remains off the fantasy radar until or unless he starts seeing steady snaps and touches in the Patriots offense.

Logs two special teams snaps
Strong did not log a snap on offense in Sunday's 37-26 loss to the Ravens.
Analysis: Strong was limited to two special-teams snaps in the contest, with Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson once again leading the Patriots backfield. At some point, Strong could earn a share of change-of-pace work for the team, but for now the 2022 fourth-rounder is off the fantasy radar.

Three snaps in Week 2
Strong logged three snaps on offense in Sunday's 17-14 win over the Steelers, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Strong, who didn't record a catch or carry in the contest, did return two kickoffs for 48 yards in his NFL regular-season debut. While it's possible that the 2022 fourth-rounder could grow into a change-of-pace role in the Patriots offense over the coming weeks, the team's backfield is currently led by Damien Harris (27 snaps, 15 carries) and Rhamondre Stevenson (42 snaps, nine carries).

Suiting up Sunday
Strong (shoulder) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Steelers.
Analysis: Now that Ty Montgomery (knee) is on injured reserve and in line to miss at least four games, Strong is a candidate to log change-of-pace snaps in the New England backfield Sunday after being inactive last weekend. That said, Rhamondre Stevenson could also see more work in passing situations in Week 2, so Strong profiles as a speculative fantasy lineup option in his NFL regular-season debut.

Listed as questionable for Week 2
Strong (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Steelers after practicing in a limited fashion this week, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Now that Ty Montgomery (knee) is on injured reserve and in line to miss at least four games, Strong, if available Sunday, is a candidate to see some change-of-pace snaps in the New England backfield Sunday against the Steelers. Analysis: With Ty Montgomery (knee) on injured reserve, Strong is a candidate to log some change-of-pace snaps in the New England backfield Sunday against the Steelers, assuming he's able to play through his shoulder issue. Strong is a candidate to contribute as a pass catcher out of the Patriots' backfield in the coming weeks after Ty Montgomery (knee) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Montgomery had emerged as the team's top change-of-pace option coming out of the preseason, but now that he's out for at least the next four games, Strong -- who was inactive Week 1-- has a chance to contribute as soon as Week 2 against the Steelers. Strong (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's season opener against the Dolphins, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Analysis: With Strong having been made inactive Sunday, the Patriots' Week 1 running back corps will include top early-down options Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson, along with change-of-pace back Ty Montgomery. Catches two passes Friday
Strong carried twice for four yards and caught two of his three targets for 13 yards in Friday's preseason finale against the Raiders.
Analysis: Of more import than the stats Strong logged Friday while logging 14 snaps is that Ty Montgomery -- the favorite to handle the Patriots' top pass-catching/change-of-pace RB role -- suffered an ankle injury in the contest. Competing with Montgomery
Chad Graff of The Athletic suggests that at this stage Strong currently profiles as the Patriots' No. 4 running back.
Analysis: In the wake of James White's retirement, there are pass-catching/change-of-pace snaps available in a New England backfield led by Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson. However, at this stage, it looks like the versatile Ty Montgomery is ahead of Strong in the pecking order. Seven touches in preseason opener
Strong rushed six times for 25 yards and caught his only target for no gain in Thursday's 23-21 preseason loss to the Giants.
Analysis: Strong has reportedly shown good receiving ability in camp, which could be his ticket to a complementary role in the wake of James White's retirement, but he failed to make much of an impact in that regard Thursday. It's also a bit worrisome that he was deployed after both J.J. Strong is a candidate to see added opportunities as a rookie after fellow running back James White announced his retirement from the NFL, NESN's Zack Cox reports.
Analysis: Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson currently top the Patriots' running back depth chart and appear poised to handle most of the early down work. However, with White no longer in the mix, there will be change-of-pace/pass-catching snaps up for grabs this season, and Strong has a chance to claim a portion of them. Practicing fully
Strong, who had been limited by an undisclosed injury, was a full participant in both practices this week and appears poised to play in Thursday's preseason opener against the Giants, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
Analysis: Though Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson currently top the Patriots' running back depth chart, if Strong impresses as the preseason rolls along, he could push for a share of work in third-down and passing situations. In a related note, veteran change-of-pace back James White (hip) remains on the PUP list and doesn't appear on track to be ready for Week 1.

Returns to full practice
Strong, who had been limited in training camp by an undisclosed injury, practiced fully Thursday, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
Analysis: The 2022 fourth-rounder's return to a full session is notable, with veteran change-of-pace back James White still bouncing back from hip surgery and no lock to be full strength by Week 1. If White ends up out or limited early on this season, Strong presumably would be a candidate to earn a portion of the Patriots' third-down back responsibilities out of the gate in 2022.

Still limited
Strong remains limited in training camp due to an undisclosed injury, Henry McKenna of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Though it's not optimal that the rookie fourth-round pick isn't practicing fully at this stage, that he's able to work in some capacity suggests that his injury issue isn't a major concern. Given that veteran change-of-pace back James White (hip) is on the active/PUP list and isn't a lock to be at full strength by Week 1, Strong -- once fully up to speed -- is a candidate to carve out a third-down role for the Patriots out of the gate.
