Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Pickett and most of Pittsburgh's other starters are likely to play in Thursday's preseason game against Atlanta, Dale Lolley of the Steelers' official website reports.

Analysis: It's a bit surprising given that Pickett and the starters played in the first two games and did quite well, with the QB completing nine of 11 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Analysis: Pickett looked to prove the early camp reports of his improved ability to make quick reads from the pocket following a bumpy rookie season. Pickett completed 13 of 15 pass attempts for 95 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions while rushing three times for 16 yards during the Steelers' 32-25 preseason win over Seattle on Saturday.

Analysis: Pickett worked with the Steelers' third-team offense during Saturday's preseason opener, but he led the team in passing yards and touchdowns. The rookie made some late plays to keep the team in contention in the closing minutes and connected with Tyler Vaughns for a 24-yard touchdown with three seconds remaining. Pickett has appeared to be the Steelers' No. 3 quarterback early in camp, but it's possible that he earns some more opportunities following Saturday's efficient performance.

Gets work with second-stringers

Pickett moved up to the second-team offense Monday for the first padded practice of training camp, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic reports.
