Loses out to Highsmith
Herbig recorded two tackles (one solo) in Thursday's 33-31 loss to the Bengals.
Analysis: Herbig was a pass-rushing force for the Steelers when Alex Highsmith was sidelined, and he appeared to carry over some of his expanded role in Week 6 even with Highsmith back. However, the split in playing time between the duo shifted significantly Thursday night, with Herbig logging a season-low 29 defensive snaps. Herbig is more of a pass-rush specialist than Highsmith, so he could continue to see limited snaps moving forward.

Secures 2.0 sacks Sunday
Herbig finished Sunday's 23-9 win over the Browns with two tackles, both of which were sacks, and a defensed pass.
Analysis: Each of Herbig's sacks came in the fourth quarter. He brought down Dillon Gabriel for an 11-yard loss after Cleveland had driven to the Steelers' three-yard line, which limited the Browns to a field goal. Herbig then got to Gabriel again on Cleveland's next drive, which ended on downs. Herbig is up to 4.5 sacks on the campaign, just one fewer than the career-high 5.5 sacks he tallied over 13 regular-season games last year.

Herbig recorded five tackles (three solo), including 1.5 sacks, in the Steelers' win over the Vikings on Sunday.
Analysis: Herbig missed the Week 1 regular-season opener with a hamstring injury but has wreaked havoc since debuting in Week 2, recording 10 tackles (six solo), including 2.5 sacks and four TFLs, eight QB hits and one pass breakup, including one interception, on 83 percent of the defensive snaps over the last three weeks.

Past hamstring issue
Herbig (hamstring) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Herbig was not cleared to play against the Jets in Week 1 due to a hamstring injury he suffered during the preseason. His full practice participation Thursday indicates that he has recovered from the injury and is on track to suit up against the Seahawks on Sunday. Herbig saw his playing time fluctuate during the 2024 regular season and finished with 22 tackles (13 solo), including 5.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries across 13 games.

Not suiting up Week 1
Herbig (hamstring) is inactive for Sunday's matchup against Seattle, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.
Analysis: Herbig suffered a hamstring injury Aug. 16 in a preseason game and hasn't been able to fully recover. He did participate in practice in a limited fashion this week but isn't quite ready for game action. Herbig's absence Sunday should make more rotational linebacker snaps available for Jack Sawyer.

Could play Sunday
Herbig (hamstring) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Jets, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The third-year linebacker from Wisconsin was limited all week in practice due to a hamstring injury sustained in mid-August. Herbig has been productive throughout his two years in Pittsburgh, totaling 49 total tackles, including 8.5 sacks, and six forced fumbles across 30 regular-season contests. If he's unable to go in Week 1, Jack Sawyer will likely play as the Steelers' top rotational outside linebacker.

Still nursing hamstring injury
Herbig (hamstring) remains sidelined at practice Monday, Alan Saunders of Steelers Now reports.
Analysis: Herbig was injured in the Steelers' second preseason game and is looking questionable for Pittsburgh's Week 1 opener against the Jets on Sept. 7. If Herbig is unable to gain clearance against New York, Alex Highsmith would be in for elevated snaps opposite T.J. Watt.

Exits with hamstring injury
Herbig exited Saturday's preseason game against the Steelers with a hamstring injury and will not return, Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com reports.
Analysis: Herbig missed four regular-season games with a hamstring injury last season. A fourth-round pick in the 2023 Draft, Herbig recorded 22 tackles (13 solo), including 5.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles in 2024. Herbig and Alex Highsmith (groin) are expected to be keys in the Steelers' pass rush opposite T.J. Watt this season.

Posts 5.5 sacks in sophomore season
Herbig registered 22 tackles, including 5.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and two recovered fumbles over 13 regular-season games in 2024.
Analysis: Herbig missed four contests due to a hamstring injury and logged more than half of Pittsburgh's defensive snaps in just five of the games in which he played, but he was very impactful when on the field. The second-year edge finished fourth on the Steelers with 5.5 sacks and second with four forced fumbles despite fluctuating opportunities. Herbig seems like a candidate to break out in 2025 in what will be the third year of his rookie contract, though that possibility could depend on whether…read more

Starting again
Herbig will start Sunday's game against the Bengals in place of the injured Alex Highsmith (ankle), Mark Kaboly of 93.7 The Fan Pittsburgh reports.
Analysis: Herbig also started in place of Highsmith the last two weeks, playing on 81 percent and 76 percent of the defensive snaps in those games, respectively. The 2023 fourth-round pick has 15 tackles (10 solo), including 3.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in seven games and on 223 defensive snaps this season.

Past hamstring issue
Herbig (hamstring) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The Wisconsin product has been sidelined for the Steelers' last four games after sustaining a hamstring injury in the team's Week 5 win over the Cowboys. However, Wednesday's full practice suggests Herbig has moved past the issue and will return for Pittsburgh's Week 11 divisional matchup against the Ravens. He's expected to serve as a rotational edge rusher Sunday.

Herbig (hamstring) is expected to play in Week 11 versus Baltimore, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Remains out for Week 10
Herbig (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Washington, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Herbig suffered a hamstring injury during the Steelers' Week 5 loss to the Cowboys. He missed the next three games as a result, but he looked to be trending towards a return following Pittsburgh's bye. Herbig opened this week with consecutive limited practices, but he was a DNP on Friday and will be sidelined for a fourth straight game. Even with Herbig out for Sunday's game, the Steelers will have depth at outside linebacker in Preston Smith, who was acquired from the Packers before the Nov. 5…read more

Won't play Week 8
Herbig (hamstring) has been ruled out for Monday's game against the Giants, Dale Lolley of the Steelers' official site reports.
Analysis: Herbig will miss a third straight game due to his lingering hamstring injury. The Steelers will benefit from a bye after Monday's game against New York, meaning Herbig will have extra time to rest before working to retake the field Week 10 on the road at Washington.

Misses practice Thursday
Herbig (hamstring) did not participate at the Steelers' practice Thursday, Teresa Varley of the team's official website reports.
Analysis: Herbig was already viewed as unlikely to play in Week 8 versus the Giants and Thursday's absence seems to suggest that he won't be able to go. With the Steelers playing on Monday Night Football, Herbig will have an additional day to return to the practice field and flip the script on the current expectations.

Ruled out for Week 8
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Herbig (hamstring) will not play Monday versus the Giants, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Herbig will miss a third straight game as he continues working his way back from a hamstring issue initially sustained Week 5 versus the Cowboys. As long as Herbig remains sidelined, Jeremiah Moon will be in position to continue handling an expanded role on defense.

Won't play versus Las Vegas
Coach Mike Tomlin ruled out Herbig (hamstring) for Sunday's Week 6 game against the Raiders, Missi Matthews of the Steelers' official site reports.
Analysis: Herbig was injured in this past Sunday night's loss to the Cowboys and will join Alex Highsmith (groin) as out for the game versus Las Vegas. Herbig had been filling in for Highsmith opposite T.J. Watt. Jeremiah Moon appears to be the next man up off the edge for the Steelers.

Herbig is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Cowboys due to a hamstring injury.

Returns vs. Colts
Herbig (ankle) is back on the field for Sunday's game against Indianapolis, Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Herbig left in the second quarter of Sunday's game due to an ankle injury, but he has returned for the start of the second half. His presence is desperately needed, as he and T.J. Watt are the only active outside linebackers available for the Steelers this week.

Leaves game with ankle injury
Herbig left Sunday's game against the Colts with an ankle injury and is questionable to return, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Herbig came off the field early in the second quarter. With Alex Highsmith (groin) inactive for Sunday's game, T.J. Watt would be the only outside linebacker for the Steelers for the rest of the contest should Herbig not return.

Logs two sacks in win
Herbig tallied three tackles (three solo), including 2.0 sacks, and forced a fumble during Pittsburgh's 20-10 win versus the Chargers on Sunday.
Analysis: Herbig saw increased playing time after Alex Highsmith exited the game with a groin injury and ended up having one of the best outings of his career. If Highsmith ends up being sidelined for an extended period of time, Herbig will likely serve as the team's starting outside linebacker opposite T.J. Watt.
