Inactive Sunday
Hoyer is inactive for Sunday's game against the Giants.
Analysis: While Hoyer is listed as inactive Sunday, the Raiders are slated to start Aidan O'Connell at quarterback in Week 9 in place of Jimmy Garoppolo, who is the team's No. 2 signal caller versus New York.

Inactive Monday night
Hoyer is inactive for Monday night's game against the Lions.
Analysis: Hoyer drew the start in the Raiders' Week 7 loss to the Bears, but with Jimmy Garoppolo (back) having returned to the lineup, Hoyer has been deemed inactive Monday. As a result, Aidan O'Connell is slated to serve as the team's No. 2 QB versus Detroit.

Poor showing in Chicago
Hoyer completed 17 of 32 passes for 129 yards and two interceptions in Sunday's 30-12 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: Getting the start with Jimmy Garoppolo (back) inactive, Hoyer struggled to move the ball, and the Raiders generated only two field goals while the veteran QB was under center. He got replaced by Aidan O'Connell late in the game after throwing a pick-six, and per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the switch wasn't the result of an injury to Hoyer but simply a product of the lopsided score. Garoppolo is expected back in Week 8 against the Lions, but Hoyer might not even dress as the No. 2 quarterback…read more

On track to start
Hoyer is in line to start Sunday's game against the Bears in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo (back), sources tell Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Analysis: Head coach Josh McDaniels never officially confirmed a Week 7 starting quarterback after Garoppolo was ruled out for the game following Friday's practice, but Hoyer looks like he'll get his first start of the season after rookie Aidan O'Connell previously drew the assignment when Garoppolo was sidelined for a Week 4 loss to the Chargers due to a concussion. Hoyer was active as the No. 2 quarterback for this past Sunday's game against the Patriots and stepped in capably when Garoppolo exited the…read more

Expected to start Sunday
The Raiders have yet to confirm whether Hoyer or Aidan O'Connell will start Sunday's game against the Bears in place of Jimmy Garoppolo (back), but Hoyer is expected to draw the assignment, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Though O'Connell drew the start when Garoppolo was sidelined Week 4 against the Chargers due to a concussion, it was Hoyer who stepped in for Garoppolo after he exited this past Sunday's win over the Patriots. This time around, the Raiders appear set to proceed with the more experienced option in Hoyer, and assuming that's confirmed, the veteran signal-caller will represent a lineup option for those who roster Garoppolo or are otherwise scrambling for a quarterback in Week 7.

Possible starter with Jimmy G out
Either Hoyer or Aidan O'Connell will start Sunday against the Bears, as Jimmy Garoppolo (back) was ruled out Friday.
Analysis: O'Connell got the starting nod when Garoppolo missed Week 4 due to a concussion, but Hoyer has been working as Garoppolo's primary backup, and the veteran came on in relief after Garoppolo hurt his back Week 6. Coach Josh McDaniels said both available quarterbacks have enjoyed a strong week of practice, but he has yet to name a starter for Sunday's battle of backup quarterbacks against a Bears team that's expected to deploy Tyson Bagent under center with Justin Fields (thumb) unavailable.

Takes over for injured starter
Hoyer stepped in for injured starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (back) against the Patriots on Sunday, completing six of 10 pass attempts for 102 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers in the 21-17 win.
Analysis: Garoppolo went down awkwardly after a pass attempt late in the second quarter favoring his back. The oft-injured quarterback did not return after halftime, leaving Hoyer to finish off the narrow victory over New England. The severity of Garoppolo's injury likely will be revealed in the coming days after the quarterback was taken to a local hospital to have his back examined. Hoyer could remain the No. 2 option even if the Raiders' starter can't suit up for the team's next game, as was the case…read more

Not in line for Week 4 start
Hoyer is set to remain the Raiders' No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Chargers with rookie Aidan O'Connell expected to start the team's Week 4 matchup in place of Jimmy Garoppolo (concussion), Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: With 77 appearances and 40 starts on his NFL resume, the 37-year-old Hoyer brings far more experience to the table, but O'Connell -- a rookie fourth-round pick out of Purdue -- offers more upside at this stage of his career. Even though O'Connell had been a healthy inactive for the Raiders' first three games while Hoyer served as Garoppolo's backup, the 25-year-old signal-caller impressed in the preseason and will now get the chance to show that he can replicate that success in the regular…read more

Will serve as No. 2 QB
Hoyer will serve as the Raiders' backup quarterback over Aidan O'Connell ahead of Sunday's game against the Bills.
Analysis: The 16-year veteran seems to have won the second-string quarterback competition, as O'Connell is inactive for the second week in a row. Hoyer most recently started a game for the Patriots in 2022.

Favorite for backup role
Hoyer is the favorite to win the backup job to Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) and will be part of the team's quarterback rotation at OTAs, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Hoyer signed a two-year deal with the Raiders in April with the expectation that he would earn the backup job. It's a role that could be fairly significant if Garoppolo is not recovered from foot surgery by Week 1, although he is expected to be. Hoyer played under head coach Josh McDaniels in New England and should be familiar with the team's offense.

Inks with Raiders
The Raiders signed Hoyer to a two-year contract Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Hoyer spent the last three years in New England, and he now reunites with coach Josh McDaniels in Las Vegas. The 37-year-old quarterback looks primed to operate as the top backup to Jimmy Garoppolo, though that could potentially change depending on the team's actions in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.

Let go by Patriots
The Patriots have released Hoyer, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Following the release of Hoyer, Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe are the two quarterbacks currently on the Patriots' roster. Now that he's presumably past the concussion that landed him on IR last season, the 37-year-old Hoyer could potentially land a backup gig ahead of the coming season.

Set to be cut
Hoyer (concussion) is expected to be released by the Patriots before March 15, Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: It's a bit of a surprising move given the Patriots wouldn't actually save any money by releasing the long-time veteran. Given the relative youth of both Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, the expected two remaining QBs on the roster, it's entirely possible New England could opt to add an additional veteran if Hoyer is released, as has been reported.

Headed to IR
The Patriots have placed Hoyer (concussion) on IR, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Now that Hoyer is slated to miss the next four games, the Patriots approach Week 5 action with Mac Jones iffy with an ankle injury, with Bailey Zappe thus in line to start at QB in Jones' place if he's unavailable Sunday versus the Lions. Meanwhile, Garrett Gilbert is a candidate to be elevated from the team's practice squad in advance of the contest.

Not practicing Thursday
Hoyer (concussion) remained sidelined during Thursday's practice, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Mac Jones (ankle), who was limited Wednesday, was present for Thursday's practice, but his status for Sunday's game against the Lions has yet to be cemented. Friday's injury report will reveal whether Jones and/or Hoyer will head into the weekend with a chance to play Week 5, but if neither are available rookie Bailey Zappe would be in line to fill in as the Patriots' starting QB versus Detroit.

Not practicing Wednesday
Hoyer (concussion) wasn't spotted at practice Wednesday, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Analysis: Fellow quarterback Mac Jones (ankle) was present for the session, but it's unclear if he'll be available for Sunday's game against the Lions. Meanwhile, Hoyer's status for the contest is also uncertain, and if neither of New England's top signal-callers are available this weekend, rookie Bailey Zappe would draw the start against Detroit.

Won't return Sunday
Hoyer (head) won't return to Sunday's game against the Packers.
Analysis: It remains to be seen if Hoyer will be placed in the NFL's concussion protocol, but his status will need to be monitored ahead of next weekend's contest against the Lions. With Mac Jones (ankle) inactive versus Green Bay, Bailey Zappe is slated to remain at QB for the Patriots for rest of the day Sunday.

Leaves Sunday's game
Hoyer is being evaluated for a head injury during Sunday's game against the Packers.
Analysis: Prior to exiting the game, Hoyer -- who was filling in for Mac Jones (ankle) -- had completed five of six pass attempts for 37 yards. In his absence, Bailey Zappe is in at quarterback for the Patriots.

Set to start Sunday
With Mac Jones (ankle) ruled out, Hoyer will start Sunday's game against the Packers, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Analysis: Though Jones made progress throughout the week, a reported high-ankle sprain will force him to miss at least one game. Hoyer thus represents a Week 4 lineup option for those who roster Jones or are in need of short-term help in two-QB formats. That said, in the absence of their starting signal-caller, Lazar anticipates that the Patriots figure to lean on the running back duo of Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson this weekend, a plausible scenario that limits Hoyer's fantasy upside.

Could fill in for Jones
Hoyer is a candidate to start Sunday's game against the Pacers with Mac Jones dealing with a high-ankle sprain that is likely to keep him sidelined for the contest, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Though a timetable for Jones' injury recovery hasn't yet been outlined, Hoyer appears on track to fill in at quarterback for the team Week 4, at a minimum. If that's the case, the veteran signal-caller will be an option for those who roster Jones or who play in two-QB fantasy formats.

Staying with Pats
Hoyer is signing a a two-year, $4 million contract to stay with the Patriots, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The 36-year-old backup QB has played for seven NFL teams, but the Patriots are the only one he's spent more than two seasons with. Despite that, Hoyer has made just one start in a New England uniform, and each of his five appearances last season came off the bench behind Mac Jones, who will be back in 2022 as the team's starting QB. That leaves Hoyer as the favorite for the No. 2 job, though the Patriots could add some competition before camp.

Placed on reserve/COVID-19 list
Hoyer (illness) was put on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.

Promoted to active roster
Hoyer agreed to a deal with the Patriots on Saturday that will promote him to the 53-man roster, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Hoyer will serve as the backup to Mac Jones under center, as Jarrett Stidham (back) remains on the reserve/PUP list. The journeryman Hoyer last saw action on the field in Week 4 of 2020. He completed 15 of 25 passes for 130 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the contest.

Headed back to practice squad
Hoyer reverted from the active roster back to the practice squad Monday, Ben Volin of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Hoyer was elevated to the active roster Sunday in order to serve as the team's backup quarterback. He's likely to return to the same role for the New England in its Week 2 matchup against the Jets, and he could be signed to the active roster with Jarrett Stidham (back) sidelined through at least Week 6.

Elevated from practice squad
Hoyer was elevated from the Patriots' practice squad ahead of Sunday's Week 1 matchup against the Dolphins, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Since Jarrett Stidham (back) is on the reserve/PUP list to begin the year, Hoyer will join the active roster for the season opener to serve as the primary backup to Mac Jones. The 35-year-old Hoyer appeared in one game for the Patriots last year and completed 15 of 24 passes for 130 yards and an interception.

Hoyer agreed Wednesday to join New England's initial practice squad, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: As expected, the veteran quarterback -- who was let go during the team's Tuesday roster cuts -- has returned to New England in short order. Released, but expected back
Hoyer was released by the Patriots on Tuesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The move arrives on the same day that the Patriots parted ways with Cam Newton, but the expectation is that Hoyer will be re-signed by the team in the coming days in order to back up starting QB Mac Jones. Per Reiss, Hoyer's release gives New England some roster-setting flexibility in the short term.

Returns to New England
The Patriots are re-signing Hoyer, Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Hoyer's return suddenly gives New England one of the deepest quarterback rooms in the league, as the veteran likely slots in as the No. 4 option behind all of Cam Newton, Mac Jones and Jarrett Stidham. Last season, Hoyer served as the Patriot's third quarterback and logged a single start. It's unlikely that the team carries more than three signal-callers onto the regular season roster, so Hoyer could compete with Stidham for the final spot.

Closes season as No. 3 QB
Hoyer finished the 2020 season with 15 completions on 24 passing attempts for 130 yards and an interception in one appearance.
Analysis: Hoyer did log a start in Week 4, when Cam Newton landed on the reserve/COVID list, but aside from that he served as the team's No. 3 QB for the bulk of the campaign, while Jarrett Stidham settled in as the team's top backup. Like Newton, Hoyer is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason and it's uncertain whether team will try to re-sign either veteran signal caller.

Bound for reserve role
Hoyer is slated return to the No. 2 or 3 quarterback role for the Patriots' Week 6 game against the Broncos after starter Cam Newton, was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Even if Newton wasn't cleared for Week 6, Hoyer wasn't expected to start Sunday anyway, with Jarrett Stidham likely to have drawn the assignment. After flopping in his turn as a starter in place of Newton in the Patriots' Week 4 loss to the Broncos, Hoyer could be a healthy inactive moving forward if head coach Bill Belichick elects to roll with Stidham as the top backup quarterback.

Unlikely to start Week 5
The Patriots are expected to go with Jarrett Stidham rather than Hoyer as their starting quarterback for Monday's game against the Broncos in the event Cam Newton isn't cleared to return from the reserve/COVID-19 list in advance of the Week 5 contest, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports.
Analysis: According to Michael Giardi and Judy Battista of NFL Network, Newton has been asymptomatic since testing positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 3 and could be cleared to practice Saturday, but he'll first need to submit two negative test results separated by at least 24 hours. If Newton isn't able to clear all COVID-19-related protocols in advance of Monday's game, the Patriots are seemingly prepared to break in their third starting quarterback of the season in Stidham, who relieved a struggling Hoyer…read more

Lackluster showing in loss
Hoyer completed 15 of 24 passes for 130 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the Patriots' 26-10 loss to the Chiefs on Monday night. He also gained eight yards on his sole rush and lost a fumble before being replaced by Jarrett Stidham late in the third quarter.
Analysis: The veteran quarterback drew the start for Cam Newton (illness), but even Hoyer's extensive experience in coordinator Josh McDaniels' offense couldn't help him to a competent performance against an aggressive KC defense. A miscue ultimately proved his undoing, as Hoyer fumbled at the Chiefs' eight-yard line to short-circuit New England's best drive of the night in the latter portion of the third quarter. Hoyer and the rest of the Patriots other than Cam Newton, all tested negative for COVID-19 on Saturday night, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Expected to start
Hoyer will start Week 4 against the Chiefs if the game is merely postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests rather than canceled, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Cam Newton was among those players whose positive tests caused the game to be postponed. Hoyer is ahead of Jarrett Stidham on the Patriots' depth chart and is expected to get the nod in his place. It remains unclear whether or not the game will indeed go forward during Week 4, however. The league hopes to play the game Monday or Tuesday, but a similar plan was initially proposed for the Titans/Steelers contest, which eventually got canceled and will be made up during a future week.

Hoyer and the Patriots will not play the Chiefs in their scheduled Sunday matchup and the NFL instead hopes to move the game to Monday or Tuesday after players from both sides tested positive for COVID-19.
Analysis: The change comes after it was reported earlier Saturday that Cam Newton had tested positive for COVID-19 while Chiefs practice-squad quarterback Jordan Ta'amu also tested positive. It's unclear as of yet who will step in during Newton's absence, but Hoyer has been the only active backup through the first three weeks with Jarrett Stidham acting as a healthy scratch. Backs up Newton in opener
Hoyer served as the Patriots' top backup during Sunday's divisional win over the Dolphins, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
Analysis: Hoyer appears to have emerged ahead of Jarrett Stidham in New England's backup competition, though Cam Newton's grip on the starting job looks ironclad after an impressive Week 1 performance. Newton hasn't suited up for a full 16-game season since 2017, so his durability does remain something of a question mark, but Hoyer's only path to seeing game action in 2020 likely would be for the 31-year-old to miss time.

Getting first-team reps
Hoyer, Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham have taken an even split of QB reps through the first two days of padded practices, Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com reports.
Analysis: Hoyer was promised an opportunity to compete for the starting job when he signed with the Patriots in March, but most of the recent analysis has focused on Newton, and, to a lesser extent, Stidham. Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal notes that Hoyer was the top performer at Tuesday's practice, likely benefitting from his prior experience working with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Joined by Newton in Foxborough
The Patriots have signed Cam Newton to compete with Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham for the starting quarterback job, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Hoyer would've been the underdog in a 1v1 competition with Stidham and now looks like an extreme longshot to get the Week 1 start. In fact, the 34-year-old may not even have a spot on the 53-man roster, considering he's scheduled to make only $1.05 million in 2020. Likely to back up Stidham
Jeff Howe of The Athletic believes that Jarrett Stidham "has the inside track" over Hoyer in terms of taking over the Patriots' vacated starting QB job.
Analysis: Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Patriots are slated to pay Hoyer $1.05 million, with the veteran signal-caller in line for a guaranteed $2 million, factoring in what he'll get from the Colts, who recently released him. Third stint with Patriots
Hoyer and New England agreed to terms on a one-year contract Sunday, Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Hoyer will head back to New England after spending two prior stints with the club in 2010-11 and 2017-18. In four appearances for the Colts last season, the veteran completed 35 of 65 passes for 372 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. This is a great opportunity for the 34-year-old, as the Patriots only have the inexperienced Jarrett Stidham and Cody Kessler currently on the roster.

Hoyer was released by the Colts on Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The Colts' decision to add Philip Rivers ultimately made Hoyer expendable. Starts one game in 2019
Hoyer completed passes in two games during the 2019 season, connecting on 35 of 65 attempts for 372 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Analysis: Hoyer technically appeared in four games, but in two of those contests he was only asked to take a knee. All of the journeyman's extensive action came in Weeks 9 and 10 when starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett went down with a knee injury. Hoyer is under contract for the 2020 season and should return as the Colts backup signal-caller.

Returning to backup role
Coach Frank Reich said after Wednesday's practice that Hoyer would return to the backup role behind Jacoby Brissett (knee) in the Colts' Week 11 game against the Jaguars, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports. "I'm assuming [Brissett is] going to be good and barring any setback the rest of the week, he'll be the starter," Reich said.
Analysis: Brissett missed the Colts' Week 10 loss to the Dolphins with a sprained MCL, an injury he sustained the week prior in Indianapolis' loss in Pittsburgh. As a result, Hoyer was pressed into action for his first start since 2019 and struggled mightily against one of the NFL's worst pass defenses, completing only 18 of 39 attempts for 204 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Brissett's ability to practice without any restrictions Wednesday was enough for the Colts to sign off on him…read more

Struggles mightily in loss
Hoyer completed 18 of 39 passes for 204 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in the team's Week 10 loss to Miami.
Analysis: Hoyer took a step back in his first start of the season, turning the ball over three times in a winnable matchup. Particularly backbreaking was his third interception, which occurred with just under six minutes remaining in the game and the Colts trailing 13-12. Ultimately, he led a frantic comeback that came up just short when the Colts turned the ball over on downs at the Dolphins' eight yard line with only 45 seconds remaining. Jacoby Brissett (knee) was able to practice on a limited basis…read more

Steps into starting role
Hoyer will start Sunday's game against the Dolphins after Jacoby Brissett (knee) was downgraded to out.
Analysis: It's a bit of a surprise to see the Colts rule out Brissett prior to Sunday, as the 26-year-old was able to practice, albeit on a limited basis, all week. Hoyer, who entered last week's contest and finished with a respectable 168 passing yards and three touchdowns, should be primed for a solid matchup against the 1-7 Dolphins, although he'll be without a pair of key pass catchers in T.Y Hilton (calf) and Parris Campbell (hand).

Three touchdowns in relief
Hoyer completed 17 of 26 pass attempts for 168 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in Week 9 against Pittsburgh. He also added one rush for six yards.
Analysis: Hoyer entered the game with 12 minutes remaining in the second quarter after Jacoby Brissett (knee) exited with an injury. Hoyer finished that drive with an 11-yard touchdown toss to Jack Doyle, though one drive later, he threw a pick-six deep in Steelers territory. The veteran bounced back in the second half to throw for two more scores and also get the team in a position to win, though Adam Vinatieri missed a 43-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter. Brissett appears to be battling an…read more
