May share more work with White
Head coach Antonio Pierce said Wednesday that Mattison remains the team's starting running back, but Pierce also wants to get Zamir White more involved, Levi Edwards of the Raiders' official site reports.
Analysis: Mattison started the last four games and took at least 57 percent of snaps and at least 17 touches in each contest, averaging 16.5 carries for 44.5 yards (2.7 YPC) and 3.8 catches for 28.8 yards (7.2 YPT) while scoring one touchdown. The volume has made him a reasonable fantasy starter, at least in PPR leagues, but his struggles on the ground seemingly open the door for White to take on a significant role again, possibly as soon as this Sunday at Cincinnati.

Horrific efficiency against KC
Mattison rushed the ball 14 times for 15 yards in Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Chiefs. He added five receptions on five targets for 29 yards.
Analysis: Mattison was the only Raider to record more than two carries, but he didn't do anything to earn the continued opportunity. His longest rush went for just five yards, and four of his 14 carries went for zero or negative yards. Mattison did manage to salvage his day as a receiver, as he tied for second on the team with five targets. Zamir White saw only two carries and totaled -1 yards, though it wouldn't be surprising to see the Raiders mix up their running back usage in Week 9 against the…read more

Keeps lead role in White's return
Mattison rushed 23 times for 92 yards and caught all three of his targets for 31 yards in Sunday's 20-15 loss to the Rams.
Analysis: The Raiders got Zamir White (groin) back for the first time since Week 4, but Mattison got 23 carries to White's three. Having usurped White as the top option in Vegas' backfield, Mattison should have a high touch floor moving forward on a Raiders team that wants to play smashmouth football due to the team's lack of talent in the passing game. Mattison has logged at least 17 touches in three consecutive games heading into a Week 8 home game against the Chiefs.

Tallies touchdown as lead back
Mattison rushed the ball 14 times for 33 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 32-13 loss to the Steelers. He added five receptions on five targets for 32 yards.
Analysis: Mattison served as the lead back for the second consecutive week in the absence of Zamir White (groin). He accounted for the majority of his production on the Raiders' first offensive possession, during which Mattison recorded 25 yards on the ground while also recording his touchdown. If White is sidelined again for a Week 7 matchup against the Rams, Mattison should have the ongoing chance to be productive thanks to projected volume.

Set to lead backfield
Mattison is in line to lead the Raiders backfield Sunday against the Steelers with Zamir White (groin) inactive.
Analysis: With White on the pine Week 5 at Denver, Mattison started and earned a 57 percent snap share en route to 15 carries for 38 yards and two catches (on three targets) for 23 yards. Meanwhile, Ameer Abdullah handled 44 percent of plays, with most of his 51 yards from scrimmage coming on a 40-yard carry, though he did have a three-yard touchdown run. A similar breakdown of reps between Mattison and Abdullah likely will come to pass Sunday.

Struggles as lead back
Mattison rushed the ball 15 times for 38 yards in Sunday's 34-18 loss to the Broncos. He added two receptions on three targets for 23 yards.
Analysis: Mattison took over as the lead ball carrier in the Raiders' backfield and tripled his previous high in carries for the season. He was ineffective with the opportunity, however, as his longest rush went for just eight yards while he averaged only 2.5 yards per carry. Mattison salvaged his day to some degree with his work as a pass catcher, though it wouldn't be a surprise to see Ameer Abdullah mix in more in Week 6 against Pittsburgh if Zamir White (groin) remains sidelined.

Set for lead role with White out
Mattison is set to operate as Vegas' top running back against the Broncos on Sunday, as Zamir White (groin) has been ruled out, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: White picked up the groin injury in practice Wednesday and subsequently sat out Thursday and Friday. Even before the injury to White, Mattison had been headed for an uptick in opportunities, as Mattison's averaging 5.1 yards on 17 carries this season compared to White's paltry 3.1 YPC on 49 rushes. Ameer Abdullah and Dylan Laube also could see more touches in White's absence.

Role slated to increase
Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce said Monday that Mattison's recent quality of play has earned him more work and that he's "going to get it," Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
Analysis: Mattison handled only five carries during Las Vegas' 20-16 win over the Browns in Week 4, but he compiled 60 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, starter Zamir White rushed 17 times for 50 yards and lost a fumble, which was recovered by Cleveland's defense and returned for a score in the fourth quarter. Through the first four games of the regular season, Mattison is averaging 5.1 yards per carry and has scored a total of three times, while White is averaging just 3.1 yards per rush and has yet to…read more

Six touches and a score Sunday
Mattison rushed three times for seven yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 36-22 loss to the Panthers. He also caught all three of his targets for 37 yards.
Analysis: The Raiders' efficiency issues on the ground continued Sunday, but Mattison vultured fellow running back Zamir White near the goal line for a second straight week by putting the team on the board with a two-yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter. Additionally, Mattison remained the primary receiving option out of the backfield ahead of Ameer Abdullah, who was targeted twice. Scores goal-line TD in victory
Mattison rushed four times for one yard and a touchdown in Sunday's 26-23 win over the Ravens.
Analysis: The former Viking wasn't targeted in the passing game Sunday after quarterback Gardner Minshew looked his way on six separate occasions in the season opener, but Mattison was dealt a goal-line carry late in the third quarter, which he converted for a one-yard touchdown run. Aside from falling into the end zone, Mattison netted no production as the Raiders' entire backfield was stymied on the ground by the Ravens' defensive front. Makes touchdown grab in Week 1 loss
Mattison rushed five times for 19 yards and caught four of six targets for 43 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 22-10 loss to the Chargers.
Analysis: Mattison not only scored the Raiders' only touchdown of the contest on a 31-yard reception in the first quarter, but he also out-snapped starting running back Zamir White by a count of 36 to 23. Opening as big underdogs against the Ravens in Week 2, Mattison once again could see a healthy share of the backfield split if a similar second-half script requires more passing from the Raiders. Unremarkable with six touches
Mattison rushed five times for 15 yards and secured one of two targets for six yards in the Raiders' 27-12 preseason loss to the Cowboys on Saturday night. He also returned one kickoff for 23 yards.
Analysis: Mattison worked as the second running back in behind Zamir White, a hierarchy that's expected to be mirrored during the regular season. Mattison shouldn't need any additional reps to get ready for the regular season and will be a valuable complementary presence, so he's likely to sit out of the Raiders' preseason finale against the 49ers on Friday night.

In line for No. 2 RB role
Mattison profiles as Zamir White's top backup at running back, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Following the free-agent departure of Josh Jacobs, White is the team's presumed lead back and figures to handle the bulk of the carries, likely leaving Mattison without much fantasy value unless the 24-year-old suffers an injury (or struggles and eventually gets benched). Meanwhile, Reed indicates that Ameer Abdullah and rookie Dylan Laube are still competing for third-down RB duties, although Mattison handled some of those snaps with the first-team offense in Vegas' preseason opener against…read more

Set to join Las Vegas backfield
Mattison is in line to sign with the Raiders, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: In 16 games for the Vikings during the 2023 regular season, Mattison had 180 carries for 700 yards and caught 30 of his 44 targets for 192 yards and three receiving TDs. With the Raiders, Mattison -- who turns 26 in June -- is slated to provide the team with needed backfield depth and a complementary option alongside 2022 fourth-rounder Zamir White following the free-agent departure of Josh Jacobs. Officially released by Minnesota
The Vikings officially released Mattison on Monday.
Analysis: Mattison initially was informed of his release by the team in late February, and he's now officially a free agent after having signed a two-year, $7 million deal with the team last offseason. The veteran back is coming off a solid season from a volume perspective, with 700 yards on a career-high 180 carries across 16 games, but those stats were marred by a lack of explosiveness (3.9 YPC) and turnovers, with three total fumbles, two of which were lost. To be released by Vikings
The Vikings have informed Mattison that they will be releasing him, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Mattison took over as the primary running back in Minnesota after Dalvin Cook was released last offseason. He had a good season from a volume perspective, logging a career-best 180 carries while also racking up 30 receptions. However, Mattison lacked explosiveness, which was evident from the fact that he had just one rush over 20 yards. He'll likely be looking for a short-term deal as a complementary rusher this offseason.

Handles eight touches in finale
Mattison rushed seven times for 24 yards and caught his lone target for five yards in Sunday's 30-20 loss to the Lions.
Analysis: Mattison continued to operate as the backup running back behind Ty Chandler, concluding a disappointing season for the former player. In 16 appearances, the 25-year-old carried 180 times for 700 yards (3.9 average) and failed to find the end zone as a rusher. Mattison had three carries for 17 yards and two receptions for 13 yards on two targets in Sunday's loss to Green Bay.

Cleared for SNF
Mattison (ankle) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday night's game against Green Bay.
Analysis: His status was never really in doubt after he returned from an ankle injury last week and took two touches on five snaps in a 30-24 loss to the Lions. Mattison upgraded to full practice participation Friday after limited sessions earlier in the week, and there's a good chance he gets at least a little more playing time Week 17 given that he's healthier and Ty Chandler managed just 17 total yards last week. Mattison (ankle) was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report.
Analysis: Mattison sat out Week 15 due to a right ankle sprain, but he was able to return to action this past Sunday against the Lions, when he turned two carries into minus-1 yard on five offensive snaps in the Vikings' 30-24 loss. Fellow running back Ty Chandler paced the Vikings backfield with 36 snaps on offense, but he managed just eight carries for 17 yards and one touchdown. Sparse usage in return
Mattison had two carries for minus-1 yard during Sunday's 30-24 defeat to the Lions.
Analysis: In a game in which the Vikings were in catch-up mode from the outset, the offense led by quarterback Nick Mullens leaned toward the air and not the ground, resulting in 36 pass attempts and just 11 rushes. Fellow running back Ty Chandler handled eight of those carries, and the only member of the backfield to receive a target was FB C.J. Ham, despite WR Jordan Addison (ankle) and TE T.J. Mattison (ankle) is active for Sunday's game against the Lions.
Analysis: Coming off his first absence of the season in the Vikings' Week 15 overtime loss to the Bengals, Mattison turned in just one limited practice this week, but the coaching and training staffs apparently came away encouraged enough with his health to give him the green light to play Saturday. Mattison (ankle), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Lions, is expected to play, but he may be less than 100 percent healthy, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: After sitting out the Vikings' 27-24 overtime loss to the Bengals in Week 15 due to a sprained right ankle, Mattison has put himself in position to play Sunday after he was able to return to practice Friday as a limited participant. Analysis: After missing the Vikings' 27-24 overtime loss to the Bengals last weekend and then sitting out the team's first two practices of Week 16, Mattison returned to practice Friday. The running back appears to have demonstrated enough progress in his recovery from a right knee sprain to at least put himself in consideration to play Sunday, but final word on his status won't arrive until Minnesota releases its inactive list 90 minutes prior to the game's 1 p.m. ET kickoff. Mattison (ankle) was listed as a non-participant on Tuesday's practice estimate.
Analysis: Mattison racked up 66 yards on 10 carries in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Raiders before exiting with a right low-ankle sprain. His estimated non-participation on Tuesday's report isn't a great sign for his early prospects of playing Saturday against the Bengals. Has sprained ankle
Coach Kevin O'Connell said after Sunday's 3-0 win over the Raiders that Mattison is dealing with a sprained ankle, Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mattison exited in the second half after racking up 66 rushing yards on 10 carries. His return timetable will hinge on the severity and location of the sprain, as low-ankle sprains often take no more than two weeks to come back from, while high-ankle sprains usually result in multi-week absences. Ty Chandler would be in line to handle the majority of snaps in Minnesota's backfield if Mattison misses additional time.

Injures ankle Sunday
Mattison sustained an ankle injury during Sunday's game at Las Vegas, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It's been a rough injury day for the Vikings, who have lost top wide receiver Justin Jefferson (chest), starting right tackle Brian O'Neill (ankle) and now their No. 1 running back. Mattison got injured on the team's first offensive play of the second half, and if he's unable to reenter the contest, he'll end Week 14 with 10 carries for 66 yards. Garners 63 total yards in loss
Mattison rushed 10 times for 52 yards and secured both targets for 11 yards in the Vikings' 12-10 loss to the Bears on Monday. He also fumbled once but recovered the ball.
Analysis: Mattison led the Vikings in rushing yards and averaged over 5.0 yards per carry for just the second time this season with the help of a 21-yard run. The veteran back also saw two targets for the fourth straight contest, and his rushing yardage total qualified as his second highest since Week 4. No practice Wednesday
Mattison (concussion) was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday's practice estimate.
Analysis: Mattison departed this past Sunday's win against the Saints with a head injury and eventually was confirmed to be in the concussion protocol Monday. With no on-field work to speak of to begin Week 11 prep, he doesn't appear to be in a great spot ahead of Sunday's game at Denver. If Mattison is unable to gain clearance from an independent neurologist by Saturday, the Vikings may be forced to use the combination of Ty Chandler, Kene Nwangwu and recent practice-squad signee Myles Gaskin out of…read more

In concussion protocol
Mattison is in the league's concussion protocol Monday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Mattison left Sunday's game against the Saints in the third quarter and never returned to action. With Cam Akers (Achilles) already done for the rest of the season, the Vikings will be left with Ty Chandler, Kene Nwangwu and practice-squad members Myles Gaskin and DeWayne McBride in the backfield if Mattison is unable to play Week 11 against the Broncos.

Sustains concussion
Mattison won't return to Sunday's game against the Saints after sustaining a concussion in the third quarter, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Mattison reeled in one of two targets for six yards and carried seven times for 24 yards before suffering the head injury on a three-yard gain on what proved to be his final tote of the day. Ty Chandler -- who had moved up to No. 2 on the depth chart in the wake of Cam Akers suffering a season-ending Achilles injury last week -- will finish Sunday's contest as the Vikings' top back.

Could see role expand sans Akers
Mattison could take on a larger share of the Vikings' running backs snaps beginning in Sunday's game against the Saints after Cam Akers suffered a season-ending Achilles tear in Minnesota's Week 9 win over Atlanta, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Mattison had already started all nine of Minnesota's games to date, but he had seen his snap share trend downward since the Vikings acquired Akers from the Rams on Sept. 21. After playing north of 70 percent of the snaps in each of the Vikings' first three contests, Mattison cleared that bar just once in the subsequent six games while Akers averaged 8.2 touches per contest during that stretch. The Vikings are expected to break in Ty Chandler as their new No. 2 back, but given that Chandler has…read more

Produces as pass catcher
Mattison rushed the ball 16 times for 44 yards in Sunday's 31-28 win over Atlanta. He added two catches on two targets for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: Mattison led the backfield with 18 touches compared to 10 for Cam Akers (Achilles). He wasn't particularly effective on the ground -- he averaged only 2.8 yards per carry with a long of eight -- but he accounted for Minnesota's longest play from scrimmage on a 47-yard reception. Mattison also found the end zone on a two-yard touchdown catch just before halftime. With Akers feared to have suffered a season-ending torn Achilles' tendon, Mattison could reclaim a more substantial portion of the…read more

Shut down in Sunday's win
Mattison carried the ball 16 times for 31 yards and caught his only target for two yards in Sunday's 24-10 win over the Packers.
Analysis: While his 17 touches topped Cam Akers' 10, it was the latter who punched in a six-yard TD late in the first quarter. Even if Mattison maintains his top spot in the Minnesota backfield, the upside of the whole offense suddenly looks a lot more questionable with Kirk Cousins having potentially suffered a season-ending Achilles injury Sunday. Mattison and Akers could be working with rookie QB Jalen Hall instead in Week 9 against the Falcons.

Modest workload in win
Mattison rushed eight times for 39 yards and brought in two of three targets for three yards in the Vikings' 22-17 win over the 49ers on Monday night.
Analysis: Mattison outpaced backfield mate Cam Akers by eight yards while compiling a team-high total, but the latter logged two additional carries. The workload split had been much more expansive between the two in Week 6 against the Bears, when Mattison had taken 18 carries to Akers' one. Mattison also could have improved his final line had he been able to corral a third-quarter pass from Kirk Cousins in the end zone, but the two weren't quite on the same page. Logs 22 touches in win
Mattison rushed 18 times for 44 yards and brought in four of seven targets for 28 yards in the Vikings' 19-13 win over the Bears on Sunday.
Analysis: Mattison notably outpaced backfield mate Cam Akers by 17 carries after there was only a three-carry difference between the two in Week 5. However, as has been the case more often than not this season, Mattison was unable to do much with his opportunities on the ground, although he did put together a solid showing as a receiver. Salvages day with TD
Mattison carried the ball eight times for 26 yards and caught two of three targets for 20 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-20 loss to Kansas City.
Analysis: The Vikings' running game had no success on the day -- Cam Akers managed only 15 rushing yards on five carries -- but Mattison's nine-yard TD catch on a screen pass from Kirk Cousins early in the fourth quarter brought Minnesota within a score. The fifth-year RB then dropped another potential touchdown on the team's next possession, however. Approaches 100 yards
Mattison rushed 17 times for 95 yards in Sunday's 21-13 win over the Panthers. He also caught his only target for three yards.
Analysis: Mattison was efficient on the ground, posting season highs in rushing yards and yards per carry. The tailback has now topped 95 scrimmage yards in consecutive games, which should help his case to maintain the Vikings' starting tailback job ahead of Cam Akers, who finished with 51 yards on seven touches in his team debut Sunday.

Tallies 125 total yards
Mattison rushed the ball 20 times for 93 yards in Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Chargers. He added five receptions for 32 yards.
Analysis: Cam Akers (coach's decision) was inactive after being acquired earlier in the week, leaving Mattison as the lead back once again. Mattison made the case to keep the role moving forward with production as both a rusher and receiver. Entering Sunday's action, he had just 62 total yards on the ground through two games, but he managed to easily surpass that mark with four of his 20 carries going for double-digit gains. Still has coach's confidence
Coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters Friday that he still views Mattison as the Vikings' lead back after a recent trade for Cam Akers, who is unlikely to play this Sunday against the Chargers, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: O'Connell went as far as saying nothing has changed for Mattison despite his rough start to the season and now the addition of a 2020 second-round pick to Minnesota's backfield. In reality, Mattison is on the hot seat, though Akers won't necessarily provide the stiffest competition given his inconsistent tenure in Los Angeles. Akers finished his rookie year strong and had a nice four-week stretch to close out last season, but it's otherwise been a series of demotions and subpar performances…read more

Vikings haven't lost confidence
The Vikings have not lost confidence in Mattison despite Wednesday's trade for Cam Akers, offensive coordinator Wes Phillips told reporters Thursday. "Unfortunately we've had a couple turnovers in the run game where we obviously need to clean that up. Everyone's aware of that. But we still feel very strongly in Alex and [backup Ty Chandler] and those guys being able to go in and produce," Phillips told ESPN.
Analysis: Mattison has had a slow start to the season with a lost fumble in Week 2 and just 62 yards rushing on 19 carries for a paltry 3.3 YPC. Akers may not play much this week against the Chargers as he gets up to speed on the offense, but could quickly move past Ty Chandler for the backup role. Given Mattison's struggles, it's not hard to envision Akers moving into a time share with Mattison. Limited touches in Week 2 loss
Mattison rushed eight times for 28 yards and brought in three of six targets for 11 yards in the Vikings' 34-28 loss to the Eagles on Thursday night. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Mattison had what had to be considered a second straight disappointing performance to open the season, finding running room at a premium for the most part and then also seeing his overall opportunities limited by game script. The fifth-year pro was also fortunate his first-quarter fumble didn't lead to any points, as the Eagles' Justin Evans recovered at the Vikings' 39-yard line. Underwhelms as rusher in loss
Mattison rushed 11 times for 34 yards and brought in three of four targets for 10 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' 20-17 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.
Analysis: Playing his first game as the Vikings' unquestioned lead back, Mattison came up considerably short statistically overall, even when factoring in his early fourth-quarter receiving touchdown. The fifth-year back was repeatedly stifled by a traditionally tough Buccaneers run defense, so perhaps the highly inefficient performance -- which featured a long run of just nine yards -- will prove to be an outlier over time. Analysis: Mattison dealt with a minor injury in early August and didn't play in any preseason games, but he's been back in practice for a while now and is all set to lead the Minnesota backfield Week 1 against Tampa Bay. The extent of his workload remains to be seen, with a dominant share one of the possibilities given that Chandler and Gaskin are late-round picks in their mid-20s who combined for 20 touches last season. Analysis: After Mattison missed the final stages of Tuesday's session while sporting a limp, he's been able to handle reps in back-to-back days. Wednesday's practice was a walkthrough, while the Vikings were back to a normal version Thursday, so he appears to be putting the injury behind him. Mattison (undisclosed) is participating in Wednesday's walk-through practice, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: While a walkthrough doesn't entail contact or sprinting, Mattison's participation nonetheless indicates that the injury he suffered Tuesday isn't too serious. He was seen limping near the end of practice, which left Ty Chandler and DeWayne McBride as the only healthy tailbacks, with Kene Nwangwu (undisclosed) already sidelined. Trusted in every situation
Offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said Thursday that Mattison "always knows what he's going to do" and is a better player than people realize, Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mattison ran a 4.67 40-yard dash coming out of Boise State in 2019 and didn't have a single 20-yard gain on 89 touches last year, but what he lacks in explosiveness he arguably makes up for with versatility, having proven himself competent as a blocker and pass catcher while also possessing the size and strength to handle large rushing workloads. Analysis: Mattison re-signed with the Vikings on a two-year contract this offseason, a move which now positions him as the likely starter heading into 2023. The 2019 third-round pick has flashed in his previous four years with Minnesota when asked to fill in for Cook, averaging 4.1 career yards per carry while also securing 70 of 84 targets for 526 yards. The Vikings and Mattison agreed to terms on a two-year contract Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Mattison has played second fiddle to fellow running back Dalvin Cook for his entire four-year career, but the former has had a handful of chances to shine, starting in six of his 59 appearances. Overall, Mattison has averaged just 4.1 yards per carry and scored 14 touchdowns, but he's also reeled in 70 of 84 targets for 526 yards, good for an 83.3 percent catch rate. Mattison rushed four times for 17 yards in Saturday's 27-24 win over the Giants.
Analysis: Mattison earned just a 21 percent offensive snap share in the contest, while Dalvin Cook played 79 percent of snaps at running back. Two touches in Week 15
Mattison rushed twice for one yard and wasn't targeted in Saturday's 39-36 overtime win over the Colts.
Analysis: Minnesota didn't find many touches for Mattison while a healthy and effective Dalvin Cook played a key role in the team's historic comeback from a 33-point deficit. Cook totaled 190 yards from scrimmage and a TD on 21 touches. With the 49ers hot on Minnesota's heels for the No. 2 seed in the NFC, the Vikings many need to keep riding Cook through the remainder of the season, leaving Mattison stapled to the bench for the majority of snaps.

With Dalvin Cook taking up the vast majority of RB reps for the team, Mattison can't expect more than a handful of touches in the season opener, barring an injury to the former.

Dealing with personal matter
Mattison didn't practice Thursday due to personal reasons.
Analysis: There's been no indication Mattison is in danger of not suiting up Sunday against the Packers, but Friday's practice report could be telling in that regard. Assuming he plays this weekend, he'll serve as the Vikings' primary backup to starting running back Dalvin Cook, which typically only equates to a handful of touches as long as the team's workhorse is healthy.

Piques interest of RB-needy teams
Mattison has been the subject of trade discussions with "at least 12" teams, according to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Analysis: The 2019 third-round pick is in the final season of his rookie contract and doesn't plan to sign an extension with the Vikings. Mattison isn't likely to get more than 5-to-7 touches per game when the team has Dalvin Cook, who missed multiple contests in each of his first five seasons. Cook's shoulder is particularly vulnerable to re-injury after numerous sprains and dislocations, but he seems to be healthy heading into a Week 1 joust with the Packers.

Minimal work again
Mattison recorded three carries for 17 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: Mattison was the starting back with Dalvin Cook (rest) out, though he didn't tally a carry after Minnesota's first offensive possession. He ripped off a 13-yard gain that pushed the Vikings deep into San Francisco territory, though the drive ended with a Kellen Mond interception. Mattison will continue to work as Cook's backup once the regular season kicks off.

Light work in fill-in start
Mattison started Sunday's preseason game against the Raiders in place of Dalvin Cook (rest), finishing with three carries for eight yards and no targets in the passing game.
Analysis: Cook was just being rested for the preseason game, so fantasy managers don't need to read too much into Mattison starting this contest. The fourth-year back has proven to be a reliable fantasy asset when asked to fill in for the oft-injured Cook in the past, but Mattison's role nearly vanishes when the Vikings' star is at full strength.

No missed practice
Mattison (finger) practiced Wednesday, Arif Hasan of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Mattison and Dalvin Cook (hand) both returned to the field after suffering minor injuries Tuesday. The pecking order in Minnesota's backfield appears to be the same as ever, though a new coaching staff could mix things up a little by giving Kene Nwangwu or Ty Chandler a few looks. Still, it's mostly the same deal for Mattison in the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, with his fantasy value largely tied to Cook's health.

Hurts finger
Mattison appeared to injure a finger during Tuesday's practice and left early, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: The injury appears minor, but it's worth monitoring during training camp. Mattison is set to reprise his role as the backup to starter Dalvin Cook, and he's one of the better No. 2 RBs in the league. In four games as the Vikings' primary running back last season with Cook sidelined, Mattison totaled 356 rushing yards, 162 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Mattison ran five times for 18 yards and caught his only target for three yards during the Vikings 31-17 win over the Bears in Week 18.
Analysis: 'With Dalvin Cook healthy, Mattison once again took a back seat in Week 18. He finished the 2021 campaign with 134 rushing attempts for 491 yards and three touchdowns while adding 32 receptions for 228 yards and one score through the air. Four receptions in backup role
Mattison did not have a carry and had four receptions for 13 yards on five targets in Sunday's 37-10 loss at Green Bay.
Analysis: Mattison returned to a backup role with Dalvin Cook returning from the COVID-19 list after missing a game. Mattison played on 19 of the offense's 54 snaps. It's possible Mattison could have a larger role Week 18 against Chicago with Minnesota out of the playoff race and the team potentially resting Cook.

Totals 70 yards, finds end zone
Mattison rushed the ball 13 times for 41 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 30-23 loss to the Rams. He added three receptions for 29 yards.
Analysis: Mattison dominated touches out of Minnesota's backfield in the absence of Dalvin Cook (illness), accounting for 13 of 22 total rushes -- four of which were recorded by Kirk Cousins. However, he was held in check for much of the game, though he managed a two-yard touchdown plunge early in the third quarter to turn in a productive performance from a fantasy perspective. Week 16 start on tap
Mattison is on track to serve as Minnesota's lead back Sunday against the Rams after Dalvin Cook was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: The Vikings haven't revealed whether Cook was placed on the list due to a positive test for the virus, but because he's unvaccinated, the 26-year-old running back will have to complete a five-day quarantine even if he was deemed a close contact of an infected person. The Vikings activated Mattison (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday.
Analysis: Mattison has completed his mandatory 10-day quarantine for unvaccinated players after testing positive for the virus Dec. 13. He's thus poised to serve as Minnesota's No. 2 running back to Dalvin Cook moving forward, a role that has amounted to 5.1 touches per game in his 10 non-spot starts this season.

Enters 10-day quarantine
Mattison (illness), whom the Vikings placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, isn't vaccinated and thus has entered into a 10-day quarantine, making him unavailable for next Monday's game at Chicago, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Mattison returned to his complementary role out of the backfield last Thursday against the Steelers with Dalvin Cook (shoulder) back in the lineup, taking six carries for 27 yards. With Monday's development, those reps now will trickle down to Kene Nwangwu and Wayne Gallman, who was claimed off waivers Monday. Analysis: Mattison reverted to a complementary role Week 14 versus the Steelers with Dalvin Cook back on the field, and he's now entered COVID-19 protocols. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Mattison tested positive for the virus. Veteran tailback Wayne Gallman was claimed off waivers to bolster Minnesota's depth at running back in the meantime.

Mattison rushed six times for 27 yards and failed to bring in his only target during the Vikings' 36-28 win over the Steelers on Thursday night.
Analysis: The talented backup running back returned to his usual spot on the depth chart because Dalvin Cook was able to overcome his shoulder injury and suit up Thursday. Cook went on to deliver the second-best rushing yardage tally of his career (205) on 20 carries, leaving Mattison with only a handful of touches in the Vikings' high-scoring win. Pushed down RB depth chart
Mattison will welcome back Dalvin Cook (shoulder) to the Vikings backfield for Thursday's game against the Steelers.
Analysis: Mattison is coming off his third spot start of the season for Cook in which he took 25 touches for 124 yards from scrimmage and one rushing TD during this past Sunday's loss at Detroit. With Cook back in the lineup and wearing a harness on his previously dislocated left shoulder, there's a chance Mattison spells Cook at times to ease the pressure on Minnesota's top running back. Still, when Cook has been available this season, Mattison has averaged just five touches per game.

The 23-year-old is now averaging 149.3 combined yards and two total touchdowns in the three starts he has made this season, making him a must-roster player for any games Cook is forced to miss. Finds end zone in loss
Mattison carried the ball seven times for 21 yards and a touchdown and caught two of three targets for seven yards in Sunday's 34-28 loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: The touchdown, Mattison's first rushing TD of the year, came early in the second half, but Dalvin Cook left the game on the Vikings' next drive with a shoulder injury and didn't return. Mattison had three carries for five yards in Sunday's 34-31 win over Green Bay.
Analysis: Mattison isn't getting many opportunities with Dalvin Cook healthy, as he's had just 20 touches over his last five games. Mattison had more than 100 yards rushing in both spot starts this season when Cook was injured, so he's still one of the more valuable backups in the league.

He played just 12 snaps on offense as he has a limited backup role with Cook at full strength. Sheds injury designation
Mattison (shoulder) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Panthers, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Dalvin Cook (ankle) also has been cleared, so Mattison likely will be relegated to a backup role. Mattison has eclipsed 100 rushing yards in both spot starts when Cook has sat out this season. Given Mattison's effectiveness and Cook's fragile health, Minnesota may opt to give Mattison a more significant share of the workload than he previously had been receiving with both running backs healthy.

Increases activity Thursday
Mattison (shoulder) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday.
Analysis: A shoulder issue is impacting Mattison's practice reps during Week 6 prep, keeping him out of Wednesday's session entirely before returning to the field one day later. While Mattison increased his activity level, Dalvin Cook (ankle) did the same, as he went from limited to full in the same time span. The development would appear to set Cook up to retain the No. 1 role out of the Vikings backfield, meaning Mattison would be his top reserve, at best, if he's able to suit up Sunday at Carolina.

Mattison (shoulder) returned to practice Thursday, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: After logging a DNP to begin Week 6 prep, Mattison seemed to be matching what Dalvin Cook (ankle), who was limited Wednesday, did one day later. If both end up with LP next to their names on Thursday's injury report, the Vikings could be trending toward a direction where it's the usual backfield Sunday at Carolina, with Cook as the No. 1 and Mattison on hand as his top backup. Mattison will be the Vikings' lead running back Sunday versus the Lions with Dalvin Cook (ankle) inactive, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: This will mark Mattison's second spot start of the campaign in place of Cook. In Week 3, Mattison was a workhorse against the Seahawks, turning 26 carries into 112 yards and six catches (on eight targets) into 59 yards. He has a good matchup on tap in which to produce this time around, too, as Detroit's defense has given up 134.8 yards from scrimmage per game and nine total TDs to running backs in four contests this season.

More ground work than Cook in loss
Mattison rushed 10 times for 20 yards and didn't draw a target in the Vikings' 14-7 loss to the Browns on Sunday.
Analysis: Dalvin Cook was active and logged nine carries along with six targets, so he was more involved overall than Mattison. However, Mattison did pace the duo in rushing workload, a development that may well have been tied to Cook playing on an ankle that still wasn't 100 percent after only a one-week absence. Analysis: Cook was a limited participant in practice throughout the week and remains listed as questionable for the contest, but he's expected to avoid the inactive list, which the Vikings will release 90 minutes prior to the 1 p.m. ET kickoff. When Cook went down with a groin injury Week 5 of last season in Seattle, Mattison put together the only 100-yard rushing performance of his career, totaling 112 yards on the ground and 24 more yards as a receiver. Analysis: Cook is a game-day decision and could have a limited role even if he's active. Last year, Mattison had one dud (Week 6) and one huge performance (Week 17) in his two fill-in starts, and he should handle a large workload Sunday if Cook doesn't end up playing. Remains limited at practice
Mattison (concussion) was a limited participant at Thursday's practice.
Analysis: Mattison maintained his same level of activity from Wednesday, suggesting he didn't make any further advancements through the NFL's five-step concussion protocol. With a return to full activity Friday along with clearance from an independent neurologist, Mattison would still be able to put himself on a path to suit up for Sunday's season finale versus the Lions. If active for the contest, Mattison would likely be thrust into a lead role out of the backfield with star tailback Dalvin Cook…read more

Returns in limited capacity
Mattison (concussion) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mattison's return to practice coincides with news that Dalvin Cook won't be able to play Week 17 as he tends to a personal matter. Of course, Mattison will have to work his way through the NFL's concussion protocol, but if he does, he's slated to lead the Vikings backfield Sunday in Detroit. Aside from Mattison, Ameer Abdullah and Mike Boone are Minnesota's remaining available running backs.

Could get Week 17 start
Mattison (concussion) returned to practice Wednesday, putting him on track to start Sunday's game against Detroit in place of Dalvin Cook (personal), Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Between an appendectomy and now the concussion, Mattison has missed three of Minnesota's past four games. He'll have a nice chance to end the season on a high note if he's cleared from the concussion protocol, likely stepping in as the Vikings' lead back against a Lions defense that's given up the fourth-most rushing yards per game (135.5). The Vikings also have Ameer Abdullah and Mike Boone in the backfield, but the two have combined for only 14 carries this season.

Not playing Friday
Mattison (concussion) has been ruled out for Friday's game in New Orleans.
Analysis: Mattison sat out Weeks 13 and 14 due to an appendectomy, and upon his return this past Sunday against the Bears, he emerged from the contest with a concussion, which didn't allow him to practice this week. Until he does, he'll have made negligible progress through the protocol for head injuries. While Dalvin Cook will continue to lead the backfield, there may be some RB reps available for Ameer Abdullah, Mike Boone and C.J. Ham (quadriceps).

Sits out practice
Mattison (concussion) missed practice Wednesday.
Analysis: After sitting out two games due to an appendectomy, Mattison logged six snaps on offense and eight more on special teams in the Week 15 loss to the Bears, finishing with two touches for 15 yards from scrimmage. In the course of that contest, Mattison suffered a concussion, so he's now subject to the NFL's protocol for head injuries before he can suit up again. Because the Vikings are operating on a short week with a Friday matchup with the Saints on tap, Mattison seems unlikely to play Week 16,…read more

Not practicing Wednesday
Mattison (concussion) wasn't spotted at the portion of Wednesday's practice open to the media, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mattison was also listed as a non-participant in Tuesday's practice. The second-year back served as the top backup to Dalvin Cook in Week 15, but he suffered a concussion in the contest and will now need to clear the NFL's five-step protocol for head injuries before suiting up again. Ameer Abdullah and Mike Boone could be needed as depth options Christmas Day against the Saints if Mattison is out for the contest.

Sustains concussion in Week 15
Mattison was listed as a non-participant in Tuesday's practice due to a concussion.
Analysis: After missing two games following an emergency appendectomy, Mattison returned to action for the Week 15 loss to the Bears and played a minor role behind lead back Dalvin Cook, finishing with one carry for one yard and a 14-yard reception over his six offensive snaps. Mattison appears to have picked up a concussion along the way, and he'll now have to clear the NFL's five-step protocol for head injuries in order to suit up Christmas Day against the Saints. To return against Bears
Mattison (illness) is active Week 15 against the Bears.
Analysis: Mattison has been sidelined back-to-back weeks, but a brief return to Thursday's session opened the door for the second-year back to jump back into action Week 15. There will remain legitimate questions about his usage, however, as Dalvin Cook is the unquestioned No. 1 back, and both Ameer Abdullah and Mike Boone are active for the contest as well.

Could return Sunday
Mattison (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bears.
Analysis: A return to practice Thursday as a limited participant gives Mattison a shot to avoid his third straight absence. He had an appendectomy Dec. 5, after seeing just five carries and 22 snaps in a three-game stretch Weeks 10 through 12. The Vikings will likely give Dalvin Cook the vast majority of backfield work in a crucial game this week, regardless of Mattison's availability.

Officially limited Thursday
Mattison (illness) was a limited practice participant Thursday.
Analysis: During the portion of the session open to the media, Mattison took part in stretching and individual drills, which was enough for him to get the limited tag on Thursday's injury report. He's missed the last two games after getting an appendectomy Dec. 5, but his presence at practice may indicate he won't make it three.

Present for practice
Mattison (appendectomy) went through stretches and individual drills during the open portion of Thursday's practice, Eric Smith of the Vikings' official site reports.
Analysis: Mattison's appearance at practice is his first since Dec. 4, as he required an emergency appendectomy a day later. The extent of the running back's participation Thursday won't be known until the Vikings release their second Week 15 practice report later in the day, but his presence on the field at least gives him an outside chance at returning from a two-game absence Sunday against the Bears.

Mattison (illness) didn't practice Wednesday.
Analysis: Mattison underwent an appendectomy Dec. 5 and has missed two games in the process. With that in mind, it's no surprise he's unable to practice roughly a week and a half later. While Mattison has been sidelined, fellow backs Ameer Abdullah, Mike Boone and C.J. Ham have combined for 16 touches behind clear bell cow Dalvin Cook, who accrued a whopping 62.

Won't return this week
Mattison (appendectomy) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

Still sidelined Thursday
Mattison (appendectomy) didn't practice Thursday, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Has successful appendectomy
Mattison underwent a successful appendectomy Saturday and has been ruled out for Sunday's game versus the Jaguars, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Mattison's absence could be extended beyond Week 13. Browns tight end Austin Hooper notably missed two games earlier this season after undergoing an appendectomy. A more definitive timeline should be revealed when the Vikings start practicing during the upcoming week. For Sunday's matchup against the Jaguars, Mike Boone and Ameer Abdullah figure to see more work behind lead back Dalvin Cook.

Surprisingly ruled out
Mattison (illness) will not play in Sunday's matchup against the Jaguars, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mattison has only played 22 snaps across the last three weeks, but this injury could test the Vikings' depth at running back, particularly with Dalvin Cook (ankle) a bit banged up throughout practice all week. Just two carries Sunday
Mattison had two carries for six yards in Sunday's win over Carolina.
Analysis: Mattison played 12 snaps on offense as he was used on a series when Dalvin Cook was briefly sidelined with a sore ankle. Earlier in the season, it looked like he'd get a decent number of carries to take the load off Cook. However, Cook has received nearly every touch out of the backfield the last three games.

Takes back seat to Cook on MNF
Mattison registered four rushing yards on two carries during Monday night's 19-13 win against the Bears.
Analysis: During a contest in which neither team led by more than six points at any juncture of the game, Dalvin Cook expectedly shouldered the bulk of the workload, fielding 30 of 32 running back carries and 94.4 percent of the overall RB touches on the night. An approaching Week 11 matchup against the Cowboys' 31st-ranked rush defense would provide opportunities to Mattison in a scenario where the game gets out of hand, and Cook ultimately yields second-half carries to the backup. Gets work in blowout
Mattison carried the ball 12 times for 69 yards in Week 9 against Detroit.
Analysis: Mattison got only two carries prior to the fourth quarter, when the Vikings were up 34-13. However, he helped to close out the game, picking up chunk gains of 14, 18 and 18 yards on the team's final possession. It's difficult to count on that type of game script on a weekly basis, meaning Mattison is trustworthy only if Dalvin Cook is forced to miss additional game action.

Non-factor with Cook back
Mattison rushed three times for eight yards and wasn't targeted in the passing game in Sunday's 28-22 win over Green Bay.
Analysis: Mattison was a non-factor as Dalvin Cook (groin) returned from injury and rumbled for 229 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns. Cook should handle a workhorse role as long as he's healthy, relegating Mattison to change-of-pace duties against the Lions in Week 9 and beyond.

The 22-year-old back got out to a hot start with seven yards on his first rush attempt of the day, but his other seven first-half carries yielded a total of only 19 yards. Mattison will be the Vikings' No. 1 running back Sunday against the Falcons with Dalvin Cook (groin) sidelined for the contest, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: The Vikings made the expected move and formally ruled out Cook, who suffered an adductor strain Week 5 in Seattle. Prior to his departure in the third quarter, he had 22 touches, and he also averaged 20.5 touches through the first four games of the campaign. Mattison is expected to serve as the Vikings' feature back in Sunday's game against the Falcons with Dalvin Cook (adductor) unlikely to be available for the contest, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The Vikings haven't formally commented on Cook's status for Week 6, but with the running back undergoing an MRI on Monday that revealed an adductor strain, the expectation is that he'll be withheld from action against Atlanta before being re-evaluated following Minnesota's Week 7 bye. Eight carries Sunday
Mattison had eight carries for 27 yards in Sunday's 31-30 loss to Tennessee.
Analysis: Mattison played on 16 of 65 snaps as he still had a decent role even on a day when Dalvin Cook had 181 yards rushing. Mattison had 10 touches Week 1 before just four touches last week, so his role off the bench will be inconsistent, but he has a chance to be involved enough for value in deeper formats, even when Cook is healthy.

Hardly contributes on stat sheet
Mattison registered three carries for 13 yards while also contributing one catch for three receiving yards during Sunday's 28-11 loss to the Colts.
Analysis: There seemed to be a fantasy-relevant role available for Mattison based on Week 1, as he collected 80 scrimmage yards on 10 touches while fielding 37 percent of the offensive snaps against the Packers. Week 2 was certainly disappointing in comparison; Mattison totaled only four offensive touches to Dalvin Cook's 16. Contributes as backup
Mattison had six carries for 50 yards and four receptions on four targets for 30 yards in Sunday's loss to Green Bay.
Analysis: Mattison's fantasy value is mostly as the backup to starter Dalvin Cook in a run-oriented offense, so it was encouraging to see him get a sizeable workload in a game where Cook was healthy. Mattison had four targets in the passing game (one off his career high) and nearly had as many snaps on offense on pass plays as Cook (14 for Cook, 12 for Mattison). Analysis: Mattison was a frequent subject of fantasy hype in June and July when Dalvin Cook announced his holdout from team activities. The fourth-year pro ended up reporting for training camp, but Mattison is still one of the more valuable backups in the league, given the nature of Minnesota's offense as well as the reality that Cook has missed multiple games in each of his three NFL seasons. Analysis: While continuing to manage the ankle injury, Mattison was unable to advance beyond limited participation in practice this week. Because the Vikings are already locked in as the NFC's No. 6 seed entering Sunday, Mattison won't be asked to play through the injury with the playoffs on the horizon. Misses another practice
Mattison (ankle) did not participate in Thursday's practice.
Analysis: Mattison said Wednesday that he'll play in Sunday's game against the Chargers, but back-to-back absences from practice cast doubt on his assertion. Should the rookie ultimately land on the Week 15 inactive list, Dalvin Cook might see even more work than usual during Sunday's game against the Chargers. Alternatively, the Vikings could give Mattison's vacated snaps to reserve running backs Ameer Abdullah and Mike Boone.

No practice Wednesday
Mattison was a non-participant in Wednesday's practice due to an ankle injury.
Analysis: Mattison is banged up after handling one of his larger workloads of the season in the Week 14 win over the Lions. While the Vikings eased up on Dalvin Cook's usage while he managed a chest issue, Mattison stepped up for 46 yards on 14 carries and 18 more yards on two receptions. Despite being held out of practice to begin the week, the rookie told Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press on Wednesday that he fully expects to suit up this weekend against the Chargers and is merely taking his…read more

Notches 16 touches
Mattison carried the ball 14 times for 46 yards in the team's Week 14 win over the Lions. He added two receptions for 42 yards.
Analysis: Mattison matched a season high with 14 carries, though he was still out-touched by Dalvin Cook. He wasn't particularly efficient with his opportunity, as half of his carries went for two yards or fewer. While the health of Cook was a question entering the game, Mattison's workload was seemingly due more to the Vikings' relative comfort in winning the contest, as Cook accounted for 13 of the team's 19 carries in the first half while Mattison received nine of the team's 20 carries after halftime.…read more

Solid in emergency duty
Mattison rushed four times for 22 yards and secured four of five targets for 51 yards in the Vikings' 37-30 loss to the Seahawks on Monday.
Analysis: Mattison took on extra snaps after Dalvin Cook (shoulder) was forced from the contest, and the rookie finished tied for the team lead in receptions and second in receiving yardage for the night. Coach Mike Zimmer labeled Cook's injury as not serious in his postgame press conference, but if it proves severe enough to sideline the third-year back for a Week 14 tilt against the Lions, Mattison would be primed for a start versus Detroit's vulnerable defense.

Just three carries Sunday
Mattison had three carries for five yards in Sunday's win at Denver.
Analysis: Minnesota never got its running game going and fell behind early, both factors that limited Mattison's involvement. Mattison continues to have an impressive rookie season (4.8 yards per carry) but isn't getting enough touches for viable fantasy value in most formats. He's a backup worth rostering, though, as he could have significant value as a starter should Dalvin Cook get hurt. He also has a good chance of seeing a solid amount of carries in any game where Minnesota has a secure second-half…read more

Has 52 yards rushing Sunday
Mattison had eight carries for 52 yards and one reception for two yards on his only target in Sunday's win at Dallas.
Analysis: Mattison is the clear backup to Dalvin Cook, but he was impressive in his limited work as the Vikings stuck to the ground game (36 carries for 153 yards overall). Mattison continues to have an impressive rookie season (6.5 yards per carry) but isn't getting enough carries for viable fantasy value in most formats. He's a backup worth rostering, though, as he could have significant value as a starter should Cook get hurt.

Just three carries Sunday
Mattison had three carries for six yards in Sunday's 26-23 loss at Kansas City.
Analysis: Mattison played just six snaps on offense as his usage was perplexing against a team the Vikings were expected to heavily utilize the run against. Ameer Abdullah played eight snaps as the Vikings used him in pass situations, but also threw a deep end-zone pass to Mattison as well (which was off target). Despite Sunday's usage, Mattison has a good chance of seeing a solid amount of carries in any game where Minnesota has a secure second-half lead.
