Joins Seattle's practice squad
The Seahawks signed Mannion to their practice squad Wednesday, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mannion spent training camp with Minnesota but was let go after the team traded for Nick Mullens. Mannion, a 2015 third-round pick, has been a serviceable backup during his career, appearing in 14 games across six seasons (split between the Rams and Vikings). However, he'll serve as an emergency option on Seattle's practice squad in case something happens to Geno Smith or Drew Lock.

Released by Minnesota
The Vikings released Mannion on Tuesday, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Mannion and Kellen Mond were both let go Tuesday after competing for the No. 2 gig during training camp, leaving recently acquired Nick Mullens as the top backup behind Kirk Cousins. Mannion, a 2015 third-round pick, had a solid preseason, but it's unclear what kind of attention he'll receive as a free agent.

Steady second preseason performance
Mannion was 10-for-15 for 65 yards passing with no touchdowns or interceptions in Saturday's preseason loss to San Francisco.
Analysis: Kellen Mond started the game but struggled by throwing two interceptions and no touchdowns. After Mond outplayed Mannion in the first preseason game, Mannion looked better in the second contest. The battle for the backup quarterback role looks even at this point and likely will be decided late in training camp.

Fills in as starter
Mannion got the start under center in place of Kirk Cousins (rest) in Sunday's preseason opener against the Raiders, going eight of 12 for 79 yards in the 26-20 loss.
Analysis: Mannion split reps with Kellen Mond (as expected), but it was the latter who was able to post the gaudier stat line (119 yards and two touchdowns), albeit against the Raiders' backup defenders in the second half of the exhibition. This is still undoubtedly Kirk Cousins' team, so Mannion and Mond will compete to be the veteran's backup in the coming weeks.

Will split preseason reps Sunday
Mannion and Kellen Mond will get a "50-50" split of reps in Sunday's preseason game against Las Vegas, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mannion and Mond are in a tight competition for the backup role behind starter Kirk Cousins and their preseason performances will go a lot way to determining the winner. Cousins will miss the game after testing positive for Covid-19, but he was unlikely to play even if healthy. Head coach Kevin O'Connell did not say whether Mannion or Mond will start Sunday's game, however.

Back in Minnesota
Mannion re-signed with the Vikings on Tuesday, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Mannion, who started one game for the Vikings last season, now returns to the team to provide competition for the backup gig behind Kirk Cousins. That said, 2021 third-round pick Kellen Mond would appear the likeliest candidate to hold the No. 2 role, even if no more names are added to the quarterback room.

Draws one start in 2021
Mannion started his only appearance for the Vikings during the 2021 campaign.
Analysis: With Kirk Cousins on the COVID-19 list, Mannion drew the start -- his only appearance of the season -- for the Vikings in Week 17. He completed 22 of his 36 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown during the 37-10 loss to the Packers. He also added two rushing attempts for 14 yards. The 29-year-old is set to become a free agent this offseason, and rookie third-round pick Kellen Mond is expected to step into the primary backup role to Kirk Cousins next year, so it's unlikely that Mannion…read more

Returns to backup role
Mannion will return to a backup role for Sunday's season finale against the Bears after head coach Mike Zimmer said Kirk Cousins (illness) will reclaim starting duties following his return from the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: After Cousins tested positive for the virus last Friday and wasn't eligible to play Week 17, Mannion stepped in for his third career NFL start and first since 2019. The 29-year-old largely struggled to move the offense in the Vikings' 37-10 loss to the Packers, completing 22 of 36 attempts for 189 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions to go with two carries for 14 yards. Though the Vikings are eliminated from playoff contention, Zimmer doesn't plan on using the otherwise meaningless…read more

Modest output in SNF loss
Mannion completed 22 of 36 pass attempts for 189 yards and a touchdown, adding 14 rushing yards on two carries in Sunday's 37-10 loss to the Packers.
Analysis: Mannion got his first start in purple and gold with Kirk Cousins (illness) ruled out ahead of the contest. The veteran backup didn't perform terribly given his tough opponent, but he certainly didn't create any possibility of a quarterback controversy in Minnesota. Mannion did leave the game for a drive late in the contest due to hand cramps, but he was able to return and close out the game. If Cousins hasn't cleared protocols by next Sunday, then Mannion should get another start against the…read more

Locked in for Week 17 start
Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer confirmed Mannion will serve as the team's starting quarterback Sunday against the Packers, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Mannion's appointment to the starting role was expected after Kirk Cousins was ruled out for Week 17 after testing positive for the coronavirus Friday and subsequently landing on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Though Mannion was on the same list for six days before being activated earlier Friday, Zimmer told Graff there "really wasn't" any consideration to handing the start to third-string rookie Kellen Mond, the only Minnesota signal-caller who was able to practice all week. While the lack of…read more

Activated, in line to start Sunday
Mannion (illness) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday and is expected to start Sunday against the Packers, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Mannion tested positive for the virus last week and missed Week 16 while on the COVID-19 list, but he's now back on the active roster. It's fortuitous timing for the Vikings, as starter Kirk Cousins tested positive earlier Friday and is out for this weekend. Mannion is expected to start in Cousins' place in what will be his first game action since 2019.

Won't play after testing positive
The Vikings placed Mannion on the reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday, ruling him out for Minnesota's Week 16 game against the Rams.
Analysis: Per Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com, Mannion is vaccinated, which means he tested positive for the virus. With Mannion not available Sunday, rookie Kellen Mond will dress for the first time this season as the backup to starting quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Signs with 53-man roster
The Vikings signed Mannion to the 53-man roster Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Mannion was called up from the practice squad to serve as Kirk Cousins' backup in each of the first two games. Now, he's an honest member of the 53-man roster, and he'll likely remain ahead of rookie Kellen Mond for the foreseeable future.

Reverts to practice squad
Mannion returned to the Vikings' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction report.
Analysis: Mannion was elevated to Minnesota's active roster prior to Sunday's loss to the Cardinals. He served as Kirk Cousins' backup, as third-round pick Kellen Mond was again a healthy scratch. The veteran did not end up seeing the field.

Mannion was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday.

Moved up as expected
Mannion was elevated to the active roster Saturday, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Expect to see a similar plan next week as the Vikings use Mannion's two practice squad callups before having to officially sign him to the 53-man roster. He'll back up Kirk Cousins ahead of Kellen Mond.

Set to move up from practice squad
Mannion is expected to be promoted from Minnesota's practice squad before Sunday's game and serve as the backup to Kirk Cousins, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: The Vikings can promote two players from the practice squad each week and move them back without exposing them to waivers. Mannion may serve as the backup each week under this roster rule, even though Kellen Mond will remain on the active roster. Mond, a 2021 third-round draft pick, could move into the backup role later in the season.

Joining Minnesota's practice squad
Mannion has been signed to Minnesota's practice squad, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: While Mannion is on the practice squad, the Vikings may decide to use him as the backup quarterback should something happen to Kirk Cousins. Kellen Mond is the backup quarterback on the active roster, but the rookie third-round pick struggled with inconsistency in the preseason.

Released by Seattle
The Seahawks released Mannion on Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Seattle opted to part ways with Mannion after grabbing quarterback Jake Luton off waivers from Jacksonville. The 2015 third-round pick last suited up for NFL action in 2019, when he appeared in three games with the Vikings.

Heading to Seattle
Mannion signed a contract with the Seahawks on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Mannion spent last season in Minnesota and completed 12 of 21 passes for 126 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions in three games. He'll join Geno Smith, Alex McGough and Danny Etling as Seattle's quarterbacks behind starter Russell Wilson.

No game action in 2020
Mannion didn't see the field during the 2020 season.
Analysis: Mannion spent another year acting as Kirk Cousins' backup, but despite being active for all 16 games the 28-year-old didn't take a snap under center. An unrestricted free agent in the offseason, Mannion likely will have a similar fate if he's on a roster.

Re-ups with Minnesota
Mannion agreed to terms Wednesday with the Vikings on a one-year contract, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Mannion is in line to return for another year as Kirk Cousins' backup, despite having underwhelmed in his lone extended action in Week 17 of last season. Of course, it's worth noting that his unimpressive showing came without the presence of Minnesota's top running backs (Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison) and top offensive tackles (Riley Reiff and Brian O'Neill). The Vikings could still bring in other competition for the backup job this summer.

Fails to impress in spot start
Mannion completed 12 of 21 pass attempts for 126 yards and two interceptions during Sunday's 21-19 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: Mannion started for Kirk Cousins, as he and many other regular starters watched from the sideline. Mannion completed just 57 percent of his passes, averaged 6.0 yards per attempt and turned the ball over twice, reminding everyone why he's never gotten an extended run as a starting quarterback in the NFL. Mannion will return to the bench for the postseason and could have the team considering its options behind Cousins.

Should act as top QB in Week 17
Mannion will serve as the Vikings' primary quarterback in Sunday's game against the Bears, even if he doesn't start, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coach Mike Zimmer hasn't confirmed how he plans to proceed with resting his players in Week 17, but all reports thus far have suggested that several key regulars -- including Kirk Cousins -- won't play much, if at all. Cousins is active against Chicago, but Cronin suggests that even if the veteran signal-caller gets the first snap, he'll merely just be preserving his consecutive start streak before exiting the contest soon thereafter. Mannion, who has appeared in only two games and has played…read more

Could get second career start
Mannion could get his second career start this week against Chicago if starter Kirk Cousins is rested ahead of the playoffs, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. "Sean's a smart guy,'' head coach Mike Zimmer said. "He's done a really good job on the (scout team). When he gets his opportunities with the other guys, he's done a good job."
Analysis: With the Vikings locked into the No. 6 playoff seed, there's nothing to play for this week against Chicago. However, the Vikings may be motivated to play their starters for a quarter or two after a poor offensive performance in last week's loss to Green Bay. Head coach Mike Zimmer hasn't said whether he'll rest his starters and may not announce a decision until kickoff. Either way, it seems likely that Mannion will see significant action Sunday as it's unlikely Cousins will play more than a…read more
