Cut by Cowboys
The Cowboys waived Billy-Johnson on Monday, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Billy-Johnson found work in Dallas in late April, but the team has now decided to move on from the Oklahoma State product. His most recent NFL in-game action came with the Raiders in 2022, where he appeared in two games and failed to record a single stat while playing seven total snaps.

Signs with Dallas
Johnson agreed to terms on a contract with the Cowboys on Tuesday.
Analysis: Johnson signed a reserve/future contract with the 49ers following the 2022 season before being let go prior to OTAs. He subsequently landed with the Cowboys, but the pass catcher failed to make it through to the 53-man roster. However, he did spend the entire season on the team's practice squad. He will now look to make more of an impression with Dallas this training camp.

Gets cut loose
Johnson was released from the Cowboys' practice squad Thursday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Johnson has spent training camp with Dallas, and after he was unable to make their 53-man roster, he ultimately ended up on their practice squad, where he's remained all season. His exit comes as a result of the team needing to create space with the signings of Damien Wilson and La'el Collins to the unit.

Cut, then signs to practice squad
The Cowboys signed Johnson to the practice squad Wednesday after having released him Tuesday, Patrik Walker of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Johnson couldn't make Dallas' initial 53-man roster, but he did show enough in training camp to earn a practice squad spot. He logged four total appearances between the Texans and Raiders last season, bringing in his only target for a gain of eight yards.

Inks deal with Dallas
The Cowboys signed Johnson on Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Per Patrik Walker of the Cowboys' official site, Johnson was one of several players to go through a workout Monday and presumably impressed enough to earn a contract ahead of mandatory minicamp. The undrafted wideout out of Oklahoma State caught 20 of 26 targets for 398 yards and three scores across 12 appearances as a rookie with the Chargers, but he's played in just 14 games with three different teams (Jaguars, Raiders and Texans) over the past two years. In a corresponding move, Dallas cut…read more

Let go by San Francisco
Johnson was cut by the 49ers on Thursday.
Analysis: Johnson will now try to find another opportunity with a different team despite having just signed with San Francisco back in January. The 27-year-old spent the past season with Raiders, Texans and Bengals and has only managed to catch three passes for 24 yards since 2021.

Finds new squad
Johnson signed a reserve/future contract with the 49ers on Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Johnson appeared in four games during the 2022 season, two with the Raiders and two with the Texans. The 27-year-old has also spent time with the Jaguars and most notably the Chargers, with whom he had 20 catches on 26 targets for 398 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie 2020 campaign. He'll work to make the most of his new opportunity in San Fransisco in 2023.

Joins Cincinnati's practice squad
Cincinnati signed Johnson to its practice squad Tuesday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reprots.
Analysis: Johnson has appeared in four games this season -- two with Houston and two with Las Vegas. The Bengals are expected to get Ja'Marr Chase (hip) back from IR this week, so it's interesting to see them add wideout depth when their receiver room will likely be back to full strength for the first time in more than a month.

Back to inactive list
Johnson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Giants.
Analysis: With Nico Collins (groin) and Brandin Cooks (wrist) returning from two- and one-game absences, respectively, the Texans won't have a need for Johnson, who would have sat fifth on the depth chart at receiver had he suited up. While serving as Houston's No. 3 wideout in the team's Week 9 loss to the Eagles, Johnson played 42 percent of the snaps on offense but contributed just one reception for eight yards.

Catches lone target in loss
Johnson caught his lone target for eight yards in Thursday's 29-17 loss to the Eagles in Week 9.
Analysis: Johnson was active for the second time since the Texans signed him off the Raiders' practice squad two weeks ago and snared his first reception. His snap count increased from five to 25, but that was due to Brandin Cooks (personal) and Nico Collins (groin) being unavailable. Cooks is expected back for Week 10 against the Giants while Collins' status is murky.

Makes Houston debut
Johnson played five snaps and was not targeted in Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Titans in Week 8.
Analysis: Johnson made his debut for the Texans, who scooped him off waivers last week after he was cut from the Raiders' practice squad. With Nico Collins (groin) sidelined, there was a need for a depth body at wideout. Houston head coach Lovie Smith said Collins should return soon, but he was not clear if that meant in time for Thursday's game against the Eagles. That could give Johnson more time in the active lineup. Another moving part is Brandin Cooks, who's been the subject of recent trade rumors…read more

Signed by Houston
Houston signed Johnson to its active roster Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Johnson was recently released by the Raiders after bouncing back and forth between the team's practice squad and active roster. The undrafted wideout out of Oklahoma State caught 20 passes for 398 yards and three touchdowns across 12 appearances during his rookie campaign with the Chargers in 2020, but he's secured just two receptions for 16 yards over his past 12 NFL appearances -- split between Las Vegas and Jacksonville.

Las Vegas signed Johnson to its practice squad Tuesday.
Analysis: Johnson was waived by the Raiders less than a week ago, but he's now found his way back onto the practice squad. His path to playing time and targets is not immediately clear, but the 26-year-old receiver has shown the ability to run past NFL corners when given the opportunity.

Waived by Las Vegas
The Raiders waived Johnson on Friday.
Analysis: Johnson was active for two of the first four games of the season, totaling just seven snaps (four offensive). His release opens up a spot for Blake Martinez on the 53-man roster. If Johnson clears waivers, it's possible he returns to Las Vegas on a practice-squad deal, through there may not be room after the Raiders added Albert Wilson to their practice squad Friday.

Impressive with one catch
Johnson converted his only target into a 45-yard reception during the Raiders' 23-6 preseason win over the Patriots on Friday night.
Analysis: The 26-year-old, who's competing for a spot on the latter portion of the Raiders' receiver depth chart, made an impact on his one grab. Johnson notably logged a target before one of his primary competitors for a roster spot, Keenan Cole, although the latter put together a team-best 3-48 line on the night. It remains to be seen if Johnson has done enough to survive final cutdowns, but the speedster at least put something positive on film in his final chance to do so this preseason.

Gets elevated for Week 16
The Raiders elevated Johnson from the practice squad Saturday.
Analysis: Johnson joined Las Vegas' practice squad in mid-November after spending the first half of the season in Jacksonville. Accounting for recent elevations, he's made seven appearances between the two teams, gathering in two of five targets for 16 yards and logging 41 offensive snaps versus 13 on special teams. Johnson has been elevated from the Raiders' practice squad in advance of Monday's game against the Browns.

Two targets in loss
Johnson caught one of two targets for 10 yards during Sunday's 31-7 loss to the Seahawks.

Not playing in London
Johnson (coach's decision) is a healthy inactive for Sunday's game against the Dolphins in London, John Reid of The Florida Times-Union reports.
Analysis: Johnson will be in street clothes for the second straight week while the Jaguars dress five other receivers (Marvin Jones, Laviska Shenault, Jamal Agnew, Tavon Austin and Laquon Treadwell) ahead of him. After emerging as a key deep threat in the Chargers' passing attack in 2020, Johnson has failed to gain much traction in the Jacksonville offense this season. While suiting up in the first four games, Johnson drew just three targets in total and played only 25 total snaps.

Targeted once in loss
Johnson failed to catch his lone target during Thursday's 24-21 loss to the Bengals.
Analysis: Johnson appeared primed for an increased role Thursday after DJ Chark went down early with a broken ankle, but he ended up playing only nine offensive snaps while Tavon Austin stepped in as the No. 3 wide receiver after missing the first three games of the year. Even with Chark likely gone for the rest of the season, it doesn't appear expanded opportunities are on the immediate horizon for Johnson.

Two snaps Week 3
Johnson wasn't targeted and played two offensive snaps during Sunday's 31-19 loss to the Cardinals.
Analysis: Johnson barely saw the field Sunday, while fellow depth wideouts Phillip Dorsett and Jamal Agnew received one target combined on 13 total snaps. Neither of the three receivers will have much of a role in Jacksonville's offense while Marvin Jones, DJ Chark and Laviska Shenault remain healthy.

One target Week 2
Johnson failed to catch his lone target during Sunday's 23-13 loss to the Broncos.

Secures lone target
Johnson caught his only target for six yards during Sunday's 37-21 loss to the Texans.
Analysis: Johnson and Jamal Agnew each played only nine snaps despite the fact Trevor Lawrence attempted 51 passes with Jacksonville trailing 27-7 at halftime. Johnson was claimed off waivers by the Jags after being waived by the Chargers at roster cutdowns, and he's unlikely to find much relevance in the offense while top wideouts DJ Chark, Marvin Jones and Laviska Shenault remain healthy.

Claimed by Jags
The Jaguars claimed Johnson off waivers Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Johnson was one of the more surprising roster cuts Tuesday, failing to make the Chargers' initial 53-man team despite posting a 20-398-3 receiving line on 26 targets last season. He's already 25 years old, but even if his development stalls, Johnson could perhaps be useful as a deep threat off the bench. He has a shot to be the No. 4 receiver in Jacksonville, where return specialists Jamal Agnew and Tavon Austin are the other wideout options behind DJ Chark, Marvin Jones and Laviska Shenault.

Team-best numbers Saturday
Johnson secured four of nine targets for 41 yards in the Chargers' 27-0 preseason loss to the Seahawks on Saturday night.
Analysis: Johnson led the Chargers in receptions, receiving yards and targets for the night, even as he was somewhat inefficient by bringing in less than half the passes thrown his way. Johnson has been competing with rookie third-round pick Josh Palmer for the No. 3 receiver job, and with eight receptions over his two preseason games and 12 games of NFL experience under his belt, the former may well be the favorite to win the battle.

Does little in return
Johnson (foot/ankle) caught four of his six targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 15-10 preseason loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: The appalling yards-per-catch figure has more to do with the dreadful combo of Easton Stick and Chase Daniel, who combined to complete 24 passes for a measly 109 yards throughout Sunday's contest. Johnson is locked in a heated battle with Josh Palmer for the No. 3 WR gig, and while the latter has looked impressive at times in the team's two preseason games, Johnson seemingly has flashed more as a consistent target at practice. Johnson is tending to a foot/ankle injury in the early stages of training camp, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: Johnson sustained the issue while coming down after a catch Saturday, per Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register. While the first two spots on the Chargers' wide receiver depth chart are set in stone with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, Johnson is vying with Jalen Guyton and potentially rookie third-rounder Josh Palmer for the No. 3 role. Johnson caught both of his targets for 35 yards in the Chargers' Week 17 win over the Chiefs. He finished the season with 20 receptions (on 26 targets) for 398 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Analysis: Johnson became a key piece in the Chargers offense toward the latter half of the season with Keenan Allen (hamstring/COVID-19) and Mike Williams (back) missing time. While the 24-year-old was often schemed open on deep passes resulting in a shockingly high average depth of target (20.2 yards), he saw two or fewer targets in all but four games this season and never played in more than 80 percent of the team's offensive snaps in any given game. Kept in check in win
Johnson caught all three of his targets for 26 yards in Sunday's 19-16 win over the Broncos.
Analysis: Despite the absence of Keenan Allen (hamstring) and Hunter Henry (reserve/COVID-19 list), Johnson put together easily his worst game in December, seeing just three targets despite a 77 percent offensive snap share. With a host of Chiefs players unlikely to play in a meaningless Week 17 contest and the possible return of the aforementioned injured pass catchers, Johnson's fantasy spotlight might wane to end the 2020 campaign.

Allen and Williams both active
Johnson's teammates, Keenan Allen (hamstring) and Mike Williams (back), are both listed as active for Thursday night's game against the Raiders.
Analysis: Meanwhile, Adam Schefter of ESPN notes that Allen and Williams could be on "a rep count," which suggests that Johnson could still see some extra snaps Thursday. That said, with the team's high-profile wideouts both in uniform, Johnson's appeal as Week 15 fantasy sleeper takes a hit.

Could see added work Thursday
With Mike Williams (back) not expected to play Thursday night against the Raiders and the status of Keenan Allen (hamstring) also in question, per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Johnson could see an expanded role in the Chargers' Week 15 offense.
Analysis: It's a context that could also result in added opportunities for Jalen Guyton, but it's worth noting that when Williams managed only two snaps in the team's Week 14 win over the Falcons, it was Johnson (54 snaps) rather than Guyton (61 snaps) who saw the biggest uptick in looks, as he caught six of his seven targets for 55 yards and a TD. Critical reception to end game
Johnson caught six of his seven targets for 55 yards and a touchdown in the 20-17 win Sunday over the Falcons.
Analysis: Johnson, not Jalen Guyton, was the primary beneficiary following an injury to Mike Williams (back). Not only did the second-year wideout record his second career touchdown reception, he also got open for a critical 25-yard reception on the second-to-last play of the game to set up the game-winning 43-yard field goal. Against a vulnerable Raiders defense next week, Johnson could be an excellent late-season pickup across fantasy leagues depending on the health status of Williams.

Solo reception in blowout loss
Johnson caught his one target for one yard in Sunday's 45-0 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: The Chargers' offensive opportunities were truly lost in this matchup as they struggled to compete against the Patriots. With four receptions of 50 or more yards this season, Johnson is truly feast or famine when it comes to yardage, but a paltry nine targets through all of 2020 suggests he's hardly much of a fantasy option.

Season high in receptions
Johnson caught two of his four targets for 63 yards in Sunday's 27-17 loss against the Bills.
Analysis: With the Chargers trailing early, Johnson was forced into a more prominent role. Not only did Johnson see a career high in receptions (two), the receiver had a season high in targets (four), offensive snaps (18) and number of yards (63). Of course, most of that production came on a near game-ending Hail Mary reception, something that is hardly replicable week-to-week. A Week 13 bout against the Patriots also figures to be a difficult matchup for the No. 4 wide receiver.

Long reception in win
Johnson caught his lone target for 54 yards in Sunday's 34-28 win against the Jets.
Analysis: Johnson's longest reception of the season also doubled as the longest catch by any Charger on Sunday. Quarterback Justin Herbert may not look to Johnson that frequently, but he has only missed one target this season. The depth wideout is not utilized that much in the offense, and as such, isn't seen as a relevant option in fantasy leagues.

No targets in loss
Johnson did not see a single target in Sunday's 29-21 loss to Miami.
Analysis: It's ironic that Sunday marked Johnson's highest number of offensive snaps (13) for the season, but yet he still did not see a single target. Unless a play is specifically schemed for Johnson, it's pretty evident the depth wideout has very little utility in the offense. With a low total of just three targets this season, fantasy managers should keep in mind that it will take multiple injuries until Johnson can really become a fantasy factor.

Long reception in loss
Johnson caught his lone target for 50 yards during Sunday's 31-26 loss to the Raiders.
Analysis: After being a healthy inactive last week, Johnson returned and put on one of his best performances, catching his second 50-yard reception of the season. Johnson is rarely used as a consistent target, but it's clear the team values his big-play ability, particularly with pregame schemed opportunities. Until he starts to see more consistent snaps, however, he's simply not a relevant option in fantasy leagues.

Inactive Sunday
Johnson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Broncos, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Johnson was active for the past three games and had three rushes for 17 yards and a 53-yard touchdown reception, but he won't be suiting up Sunday. Joe Reed and Jason Moore will operate as the Chargers' depth wideouts.

Rushes twice in win
Johnson carried the ball two times for 10 yards and saw one unsuccessful target in Sunday's 39-29 win against the Jaguars.
Analysis: Justin Herbert looked to Johnson once this week, but could not complete the catch. Last week Johnson was successful in his one target and turned it into a 53-yard touchdown. There are just not many opportunities available for Johnson at the moment and it will take a few injuries before he can really become a fantasy factor.

Accounts for seven yards in loss
Johnson carried once for seven yards and didn't draw any targets Monday in the Chargers' 30-27 overtime loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Johnson turned his lone target in the Chargers' Week 4 loss to the Buccaneers into a 53-yard touchdown, but he didn't garner any looks from quarterback Justin Herbert across his five offensive snaps. The Chargers did, however, call his number on a run play on the team's first offensive snap of the night, with Johnson nearly turning it into a first down. Los Angeles should continue to make occasional use of Johnson's high-end speed on deep shots and gadget plays, but he probably won't see enough…read more

Promoted from practice squad
Johnson was promoted to the Chargers' active roster from the practice squad Friday.
Analysis: The 23-year-old was elevated to the active roster as an extra player for Week 4 and caught a 53-yard touchdown while playing eight offensive snaps, and he'll now rejoin the roster on a longer-term basis with Austin Ekeler (hamstring) heading to injured reserve. The Chargers already have six other wideouts on the roster and only Mike Williams (hamstring) is dealing with an injury, so Johnson seems unlikely to receive consistent opportunities.

Headed back to practice squad
Johnson reverted to the Chargers' practice squad Monday, according to the NFL transactions page.
Analysis: Johnson delivered a 53-yard receiving score on Sunday in the team's Week 4 loss to the Buccaneers. He received an opportunity given the injury to Mike Williams (hamstring), but will now head back to the practice squad. Johnson could receive another chance if Williams cannot give it a go in Week 5, or if any other injuries thin the Chargers' receiving corps further.

Scores long TD in loss
Johnson brought in his only target for a 53-yard touchdown reception in the Chargers' 38-31 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.
Analysis: Johnson opened the scoring with his long touchdown reception, one of two of over 50 yards for the Chargers on the afternoon. The OSU product was making his NFL debut in the contest with Mike Williams (hamstring) sidelined, and it remains to be seen if he'll head back to the practice squad ahead of a Week 5 Monday night road battle against the Saints .

Receives promotion
The Chargers elevated Johnson to the active roster Saturday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
Analysis: With Mike Williams (hamstring) ruled out for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Johnson will add depth at wide receiver. Johnson entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2019 but didn't play a game, so this will be his NFL debut if he's active.

Misses cut
Johnson was waived Saturday by the Chargers.
Analysis: The final wide receiver spot on the depth chart was ultimately awarded to Jason Moore, though Johnson theoretically played well enough to earn a practice squad invitation should he pass through waivers unclaimed.

Staying in LA
Johnson signed a reserve/future contract with the Chargers on Monday.
Analysis: Johnson joined the Chargers' practice squad at the beginning of December after spending time with the Texans earlier in the season. He'll now look to compete for a spot on the 53-man roster in 2020.

Joins Chargers' practice squad
Johnson signed with the Chargers' practice squad Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Johnson was unable to make Houston's season-opening roster but remained with the team on the practice squad before eventually being released. The undrafted rookie out of Oklahoma State has yet to make his NFL debut.
