Starts HOF Game win
Bagent started the Bears' 21-17 preseason win over the Texans on Thursday, completing two of three passes for 16 yards.
Analysis: As his modest final line implies, Bagent, who's thought to have the inside track to the No. 2 job, made only a cameo appearance. The second-year pro played on the Bears' first possession and recorded his two completions to Roschon Johnson and Stephen Carlson. Brett Rypien, Bagent's competition to serve as the primary backup to first overall pick Caleb Williams, saw the bulk of playing time in the weather-shortened game and excelled in a three-touchdown performance, so Bagent will likely have to…read more

Set to start Thursday
Bagent is slated to start Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Texans, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coach Matt Eberflus announced Tuesday that the Bears won't play key starters in the team's exhibition opener, which means that 2024 first overall pick Caleb Williams won't see any snaps. As a result, Bagent will get the starting nod versus Houston, with fellow QBs Brett Rypien and Austin Reed also available to see action.

Tracking to be Chicago's QB2
Following the selection of No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, Bagent is viewed as the favorite to open the season as the Bears' primary backup quarterback, USA Today's Vincent Parise reports.
Analysis: With Justin Fields traded to the Steelers earlier in the offseason, it leaves Bagent and Brett Rypien behind Williams. There's a chance Chicago adds an experienced veteran to what is currently a pretty young quarterback room, but Bagent showed well enough as a rookie last year to enter 2024 with a chance to claim backup duties. Bagent went 2-2 in four games as a starter, completing 65.7 percent of his passes for 859 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions and adding 109 rushing yards and…read more

Ends season on sidelines
Bagent didn't see the field in the Bears' 17-9 loss to the Packers on Sunday.
Analysis: When Justin Fields missed time in Weeks 6-10, Bagent served as Chicago's starting quarterback. In five games, he completed 94 of 143 passes (66 percent) for 859 yards with a 3:6 TD:INT. During the offseason, the team will determine if the rookie will continue to serve as their backup quarterback. If the team chooses to keep him in a similar role, Bagent is under contract with the Bears for two more seasons.

Past illness
Bagent (illness) has no injury designation ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers.
Analysis: The rookie quarterback out of Shepherd missed Chicago's first two practices this week with an illness, but after a full session Friday, it seems as if he's moved past the issue. Bagent is expected to continue serving as the Bears' No. 2 QB behind Justin Fields in Week 18.

Dealing with illness
Bagent didn't participate in practice Wednesday due to an illness.
Analysis: The nature and severity of Bagent's ailment aren't known, but he'll still have two more days to potentially return to practice and clear up his availability for Sunday's season finale versus the Packers. Since starting four straight games between Weeks 7 and 10, Bagent hasn't seen any snaps in any of the Bears' subsequent six contests while Justin Fields has made his return from a thumb injury.

Quiet night in Week 10 win
Bagent completed 20 of 33 passes for 162 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed six times for 12 yards in the Bears' 16-13 win over the Panthers on Thursday night.
Analysis: Bagent mostly played the role of game manager, with his longest completion of the night a 16-yard connection with DJ Moore. The rookie once again unsurprisingly focused on Moore and Cole Kmet the most in terms of his targets, and he also completed six safe passes to running backs Roschon Johnson and D'Onta Foreman. Bagent has picked up some valuable experience while filling in for Justin Fields (thumb) over the last four-plus games, but the latter could be back under center for a Week 11…read more

Lined up for another start
Bagent is expected to start Thursday's game against Carolina after the Bears listed Justin Fields (thumb) as doubtful on their final injury report, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Bagent arguably has been better for fantasy purposes than he has been in real-life terms for the Bears, rushing for 97 yards and two touchdowns while completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 6.3 yards per attempt in roughly 14 quarters of action thus far in his NFL career. The problem is that he's turned the ball over eight times (six interceptions, two lost fumbles), though he's at least been able to avoid sacks (five on 115 dropbacks), which have long been Fields' kryptonite. The matchup…read more

Picked off thrice in Week 9 loss
Bagent completed 18 of 30 passes for 220 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions in the Bears' 24-17 loss to the Saints on Sunday. He also rushed eight times for 70 yards and lost a fumble while recovering another.
Analysis: As has been the case in each of his appearances this season, Bagent certainly had his moments, including as a runner. The undrafted rookie also showed his inexperience on multiple occasions, however, with his first interception leading to a game-tying touchdown for the Saints in the opening period. Bagent did partly make up for the turnovers with 18- and nine-yard scoring tosses to Cole Kmet. It remains to be seen whether Bagent will be called on for at least one more start in a Thursday night…read more

Will start again Week 9
Coach Matt Eberflus said Monday that Bagent will start Sunday's game at New Orleans, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: At the same time, Eberflus relayed that Justin Fields remains "week-to-week" but may be able to mix into drills this week, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Since taking over for Fields in the middle of Week 6 against the Vikings, Bagent has completed 56 of 80 passes for 477 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions, rushed nine times for 27 yards and two more TDs and fumbled twice (one lost) across two-plus contests.

Struggles in second start
Bagent completed 25 of 37 pass attempts for 232 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 30-13 loss to the Chargers. He scored a short rushing touchdown but finished with negative yards on four attempts.
Analysis: Bagent's Cinderella story lost its luster rather quickly after the undrafted rookie threw a pair of interceptions in what was supposed to be a soft matchup on paper. The 23-year-old was named the starter with Justin Fields (finger) still recovering from a thumb injury, but perhaps we see the Bears' starter back in action against the Saints next Sunday. If not, Bagent figures to be the logical option to start against New Orleans, with infamous backup Nathan Peterman being the only other option…read more

Named Week 8 starter
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said Monday that Bagent will remain the team's starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: Per Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com, Eberflus noted that there is "no change" in the status of No. 1 quarterback Justin Fields, who sat out the Week 7 win over the Raiders with a dislocated right thumb and is being classified as "doubtful" at the early stages of Week 8. Based on Eberflus' comments, Fields doesn't look as though he'll be available as even an emergency backup, leaving Nathan Peterman in the No. 2 role behind Bagent. The undrafted rookie out of Division II Shepherd managed the game…read more

Avoids mistakes in Week 7 win
Bagent completed 21 of 29 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 30-12 win over the Raiders. He added 24 rushing yards on three carries.
Analysis: Making his first career NFL start, Bagent didn't take many chances downfield -- his longest completion went for only 17 yards -- but the undrafted rookie out of Division II Shepherd also didn't make any big mistakes and leaned on Chicago's running game to produce points. Justin Fields (thumb) could return as soon as Week 8 against the Chargers, but if he isn't ready to return, Bagent performed well enough Sunday to earn a second start.

Slated to start for Fields
Bagent is in line to be the Bears' starting quarterback Sunday against the Raiders with Justin Fields (thumb) officially ruled out, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Since Justin Fields departed Chicago's Week 6 loss to the Vikings, Bagent has been the leader in the clubhouse to get the nod Week 7 over veteran Nathan Peterman, especially considering the former was active this past Sunday while the latter was not. Bagent stepped in for Fields in that contest and completed 10 of 14 passes for 83 yards, no touchdowns and an interception while also losing a fumble that was returned for a TD. The Bears have yet to make an official announcement on their No. 1 QB…read more

In line for Week 7 start
Bagent is expected to start Sunday's game against Las Vegas, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: This essentially has been the expectation since Monday when coach Matt Eberflus referred to Justin Fields (thumb) as being doubtful. Fields then missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, moving Bagent one step closer to his first NFL start, though Eberflus hasn't confirmed it would be the rookie filling in for Fields rather than journeyman Nathan Peterman. The Bears opened the season with Peterman as their backup QB before switching to Bagent at the beginning of October. The undrafted rookie then…read more

Serviceable in emergency duty
Bagent took over for an injured Justin Fields (hand) with 8:07 remaining in the third quarter of the Bears' 19-13 loss to the Vikings on Sunday, completing 10 of 14 passes for 83 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and rushing twice for four yards and a touchdown. He also committed a fumble that was returned for a score.
Analysis: Bagent's final numbers were certainly acceptable considering his status as an undrafted rookie seeing his first regular-season action. However, his fumble, which came on the second play of his professional career, would end up being the difference in the game, as it was returned 42 yards for a touchdown by Jordan Hicks. Bagent would later bring the Bears to within six points with his one-yard rushing score midway through the fourth quarter, but Chicago wouldn't find the end zone again. The…read more

Moves up to second on depth chart
Bagent will be active as the Bears' No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Broncos and is expected to serve as Justin Fields' top backup moving forward, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Rapoport notes that Bagent's move up the depth chart has nothing to do with Fields' standing with the organization amid an 0-3 start to the season; instead, the undrafted rookie has apparently made enough of an impression over his first four weeks of regular-season practices to jump veteran Nathan Peterman on the depth chart. Peterman remains on the 53-man roster but will likely be a healthy inactive for the foreseeable future so long as both Fields and Bagent are available.

Considered inactive
Bagent (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Packers, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: Bagent will still technically be dressed as the team's No. 3 quarterback, and he can enter the game for emergency purposes.

Loses backup battle to Peterman
Bagent will be Chicago's emergency third quarterback behind Justin Fields and Nathan Peterman against the Packers on Sunday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN reports.
Analysis: A new NFL rule for the 2023 season will allow teams to carry an emergency third quarterback from the 53-man roster without using one of the 48 active gameday spots. Bagent will fill such a role for the Bears, which means the rookie won't get a chance to make his NFL debut unless both Fields and Peterman get hurt. Peterman's experience ultimately helped him edge out Bagent for the top backup spot.

Likely secured roster spot
Bagent is in line for a roster spot with the Bears after the team waived fellow quarterback PJ Walker on Sunday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Bagent initially appeared to be in a battle with veteran Nathan Peterman for Chicago's No. 3 quarterback spot this preseason. However, the rookie turned some heads with his dynamic play under center, including when he completed seven of his team-high 14 passes to go along with four rushes for 23 yards during Saturday's preseason finale against the Bills. Bagent may have even earned himself a role as the team's No. 2 quarterback spot, as he would likely do a better job fitting into a scheme…read more

Competing for No. 3 role
Bagent is battling with Nathan Peterman to be Chicago's third-string quarterback, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Bagent is an undrafted free agent, but the Bears may be more interested in seeing if they can develop him instead of sticking with Peterman, who has NFL experience. Ultimately, this camp battle is expected to determine who is behind Justin Fields and PJ Walker on the depth chart.
