Limited by toe injury
Gibson was a limited participant at practice Wednesday due to a toe injury.
Analysis: In this past Sunday's 25-22 win over the Jets, Gibson logged 13 snaps on offense, while rushing five times for seven yards in the contest. As long as Rhamondre Stevenson -- who finished with 20 carries in the Week 8 win -- is available, Gibson's fantasy value is limited while he continues to handle a complementary role out of the backfield.

Five carries in backup role
Gibson rushed five times for six yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 25-22 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Gibson was used in a backup role while Rhamondre Stevenson rumbled for two touchdowns on 20 carries. Stevenson even got all three of the targets among New England's running backs. Even in a favorable matchup against the reeling Titans, Gibson will be tough to trust in Week 9 with a healthy Stevenson occupying a workhorse role.

Three carries Sunday
Gibson, who was on the field for a season-low 10 snaps on offense in Sunday's 32-16 loss to the Jaguars, carried three times for four yards and caught his only target for nine yards in the contest, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: After working as the Patriots' lead back Week 6 when Rhamondre Stevenson was sidelined by a foot injury, Gibson returned to a complementary role versus the Jaguars, with Stevenson (30 snaps, seven carries) back in action. Gibson briefly left Sunday's game in the first quarter after suffering an undisclosed injury, and perhaps that led to his limited usage and JaMycal Hasty's corresponding uptick in touches (20 snaps, two carries, five catches). Either way, as long as Stevenson is available,…read more

Bottled up in lead role
Gibson rushed 13 times for 19 yards and caught three of four targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 41-21 loss to the Texans.
Analysis: Gibson got 13 of the 17 carries by Patriots running backs prior to the final drive in Rhamondre Stevenson's (foot) absence, but the Texans weren't scared at all of rookie quarterback Drake Maye's arm in Maye's first NFL start and focused on shutting down the Gibson-led running game. That approach limited Gibson to a pitiful 1.5 yards per carry and could serve as a blueprint for Jacksonville's defense in Week 7, though the 1-5 Jaguars are unlikely to execute nearly as well when they face the…read more

Set for more work with Stevenson out
Gibson is in line for a larger workload Sunday against the Texans with Rhamondre Stevenson (foot) ruled out for the contest, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Analysis: Gibson thus should earn a second consecutive start, but he also won't have to worry about Stevenson taking some of the backfield reps this time around due to the latter's foot injury. Through five contests this season, Gibson has averaged 8.6 touches per game, so it's unclear how many more reps he may be able to handle in the Patriots offense. On the other hand, Sunday also will mark Drake Maye's first career start, meaning the game plan may be more ground-based to alleviate pressure on the…read more

Fills complementary role in start
Gibson rushed six times for 52 yards and brought in his only target for four yards in the Patriots' 15-10 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. He also returned one kickoff for 24 yards.
Analysis: Gibson opened the game as the starter with Rhamondre Stevenson briefly demoted due to early-season fumbling issues. However, by game's end, Stevenson had doubled up Gibson in carries and had seen quadruple the number of his teammate's targets as well. Nevertheless, Gibson performed admirably with the rushing opportunities he did see, recording the second-longest run of the day in the process. Given Stevenson's strong performance Sunday, Gibson figures to remain in a complementary role when New…read more

Headed for Week 5 start
Gibson is slated to draw the start at running back for the Patriots on Sunday against the Dolphins, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Rhamondre Stevenson, who signed a four-year, $36 million extension this past offseason, has been operating as the team's lead back, but with four fumbles on 74 touches through the first four weeks, head coach Jerod Mayo has elected to turn to Gibson as the team's starter Sunday. That said, Mayo noted that Stevenson, who is averaging 4.1 yards per carry on the season, will play versus Miami, but his ball-security issues of late have opened the door for Gibson (5.3 yards per carry on 29 attempts)…read more

In line to start versus Fins
Gibson is in line to start at running back in the Patriots' Week 5 matchup with the Dolphins, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Head coach Jerod Mayo stated Friday that Rhamondre Stevenson has officially lost his starting role for at least Week 5. The reason for this is due to his fumbling issues through four games. As a result, Gibson is presumably the next man up in New England's backfield. The veteran back has accumulated 155 yards on 29 carries, while hauling in seven passes for 82 yards. While Stevenson is still expected to play a role in the offense as a depth option, Gibson should get an opportunity to shine…read more

Could start Sunday
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday that having Gibson start over Rhamondre Stevenson in Sunday's game against the Dolphins is "under consideration" due to Stevenson's fumbling issues, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Stevenson has started each of the Patriots' first four games, carrying 65 times for 267 yards and two touchdowns but coughing up the ball four times. Given Stevenson's recent ball-security issues, Gibson -- who has logged 29 carries for 155 yards thus far -- is a candidate to see added snaps, possibly in a starting role. In such a scenario, Gibson represents a possible lineup option for those in need of help at running back Week 5.

Rips off big reception
Gibson rushed six times for 12 yards and caught three of four targets for 67 yards in Sunday's 30-13 loss to San Francisco.
Analysis: Gibson got some work late in Sunday's lopsided loss after starter Rhamondre Stevenson fumbled for the second time in as many weeks. The veteran backup made his mark on the contest with a 50-yard reception in the fourth quarter. While Gibson outperformed Stevenson on a per-touch basis, he still trailed the latter by nine combined touches on the day. Eight touches in Week 3
Gibson rushed five times for 29 yards and secured all three targets for eight yards in the Patriots' 24-3 loss to the Jets on Thursday night.
Analysis: Gibson logged one fewer carry than Rhamondre Stevenson but outgained him by six rushing yards. Gibson was also the only one of the two involved in the passing game, albeit to a modest degree. Gibson's downturn was notable considering he'd posted 96 rushing yards just four days earlier against Seattle, but New England's offense as a whole was held in check Thursday night. Gibson will look to bounce back in a Week 4 road battle against the 49ers on Sunday, Sept. 29.

Effective as rusher in Week 2
Gibson rushed the ball 11 times for 96 yards in Sunday's 23-20 overtime loss to the Seahawks. He added one reception on one target for seven yards.
Analysis: When Gibson landed with New England this offseason, it was expected that he would serve as the team's primary pass catcher out of the backfield. Through two games, he has only one reception, but he has made his mark as a rusher. On Sunday, his highlight reel play came midway through the fourth quarter when he evaded penetration in the backfield and broke free for a 45-yard run -- the Patriots' longest play from scrimmage on the day. Cleared to face Seahawks
Gibson (hip) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
Analysis: Gibson began the week with a pair of limited practices, but he was removed from the injury report Friday and practiced without limitations. After notching seven carries for 18 yards in his Patriots debut last week, Gibson will reprise his role as a change-of-pace option behind Rhamondre Stevenson in Week 2.

Limited in practice Wednesday
Gibson (hip) was listed as a limited participant at Wednesday's practice.
Analysis: A hip issue limited Gibson this past Thursday and Friday, but he suited up for the Patriots' Week 1 win over the Bengals on Sunday, carrying seven times for 18 yards while logging 14 snaps in a complementary role behind top back Rhamondre Stevenson. With no reported setbacks, Gibson's listed limitations Wednesday may have been maintenance-related.

Logs seven carries in Week 1
Gibson carried seven times for 18 yards in the Patriots' 16-10 season-opening win over the Bengals on Sunday.
Analysis: Per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, Gibson -- who headed into the weekend listed as questionable with a hip issue -- logged 14 of a possible 65 snaps on offense in the contest, while top back Rhamondre Stevenson was out there for 51 snaps en route to 25 carries for 120 yards and a TD. Though Gibson wasn't targeted by Jacoby Brissett in Week 1, the former Commander should see some involvement as a pass-catcher in the coming weeks. Gibson (hip) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
Analysis: Gibson finished up the practice week with limited participation in both Thursday and Friday's sessions before being listed as questionable. With his Week 1 availability confirmed, Gibson is in line to work in a change-of-pace capacity behind Rhamondre Stevenson, a role that could result in the 26-year-old yielding a degree of fantasy utility in deeper PPR formats over the course of his first campaign with New England.

Plans to play Week 1
Gibson (hip), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bengals, plans to play, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Gibson was a limited participant in practice Thursday and Friday, but the Patriots apparently saw enough from the running back to be convinced that he'll be ready to go. Assuming he avoids the inactive list -- which will be released 90 minutes before the 1 p.m. ET kickoff -- Gibson will likely work in a complementary role behind Rhamondre Stevenson. Most of Gibson's usage is expected to come on passing downs.

Questionable but optimistic
Gibson (hip) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bengals, but Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports that the running back is optimistic he'll be able to play.
Analysis: Gibson closed out the week with limited participation in practice Thursday and Friday. If he's able to play, Gibson is expected to work in a change-of-pace role behind Rhamondre Stevenson, mixing in primarily for passing situations. JaMycal Hasty would be the next man up for backup duties if Gibson has a setback.

Analysis: Gibson practiced in full Wednesday, so it appears his current hip injury is a new issue. Closes preseason with four touches
Gibson carried the ball three times for 17 yards in Sunday's 20-10 preseason loss to the Commanders. He added one reception (on two targets) for 13 yards.
Analysis: Gibson was the first back in the game for the Patriots with Rhamondre Stevenson sitting out. He played only one offensive drive with Jacoby Brissett (shoulder) under center and got touches on four of the first five offensive plays. Gibson will enter the regular season as the second back on the depth chart, and he should get plenty of work in obvious passing situations while occasionally spelling Stevenson on the ground.

Five touches in preseason opener
Gibson rushed four times for four yards and brought in his only target for 13 yards in the Patriots' 17-3 preseason win over the Panthers on Thursday.
Analysis: The veteran back's team debut included the distinction of being on the receiving end of rookie third overall pick Drake Maye's first professional completion. Gibson unsurprisingly ceded the first series to Rhamondre Stevenson, who's projected to serve as the Patriots' clear lead back this coming season while the former acts in more of a third-down/pass-catching capacity.

Now that he's back at practice, Gibson is poised to work in a key complementary role in the Patriots backfield alongside incumbent starter Rhamondre Stevenson. Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday that Gibson (undisclosed) should return to practice "relatively soon," Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Gibson is on the non-football injury/illness list for the start of training camp, after seemingly being a full participant in the offseason program. He'll presumably be the No. 2 running back once he's ready to practice, having signed with the Patriots in March on three-year, $11.25 million contract that includes $5.3 million guaranteed. Posts career lows in contract year
Gibson finished 2023 with 65 carries for 265 yards and a touchdown and 48 catches for 389 yards and two touchdowns on 59 targets.

Tallies six touches in Week 17
Gibson recorded four carries for 19 yards and gathered in two of four targets for 17 yards during Sunday's 27-10 loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: Gibson welcomed back Brian Robinson (hamstring) to the Commanders backfield for the first time since Week 13, but even with Chris Rodriguez (ankle) going on injured reserve Thursday, Gibson's workload didn't differentiate from what he's accustomed to this season. His touch count landed in the middle of his typical range of 4-to-14, and Gibson again was easily out-touched by Robinson, 13-6. As such, Gibson likely will have a similar role Week 18 against the Cowboys.

Analysis: He surprisingly didn't get more playing time in the absence of Brian Robinson (hamstring), with Gibson's 45 percent snap share lining up with his season-long rate of 46 percent. The Commanders instead used Chris Rodriguez (10 carries for 35 yards) as their lead runner and also gave Jonathan Williams some playing time (13 snaps, 22 percent), though Williams eventually left due to a concussion. Gibson and Chris Rodriguez will lead Washington's backfield Sunday against the Rams with Brian Robinson (hamstring) ruled out, Zach Selby of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Gibson figures to play more than usual, though it's hard to pinpoint the extent of his role expansion given that Rodriguez also could get a bunch of the carries that normally go to Robinson. A look back at Week 13 isn't especially helpful, considering the Commanders had just 21 snaps in the second half of their blowout loss to Miami after losing Robinson to the hamstring injury shortly before halftime. Elevated role after Robinson's exit
Gibson rushed 10 times for 35 yards and brought in four of five targets for 37 yards in the Commanders' 45-15 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. He also fumbled once but recovered.
Analysis: Gibson saw expanded opportunity with Brian Robinson exiting the game with a hamstring injury, a development that led to the former's highest carry count of the season. Gibson also retained his usual pass-catching role in the blowout loss, and if the upcoming Week 14 bye doesn't afford Robinson enough recovery time, Gibson could serve as the lead back in a Week 15 road matchup against the Rams.

Returns after one-week absence
Gibson took six carries for 21 yards and caught three of four targets for 16 yards in a 45-10 loss to Dallas on Thursday.
Analysis: Gibson played 46 percent of the snaps on offensive, four days after missing a loss to the Giants with a toe injury. Lead runner Brian Robinson dropped to a 45 percent snap share while taking 17 touches for 64 yards, and he'll likely continue to cede a large chunk of the playing time to Gibson when the Commanders host the Dolphins in Week 13.

Analysis: Gibson didn't practice last week and missed Sunday's loss to the Giants, which had a hand in Brian Robinson taking 24 touches for 131 yards on a career-high 78 percent of snaps. Chris Rodriguez had a role off the bench and gained 48 yards on seven touches, but his final carry was a lost fumble in the second half. Gibson didn't practice Wednesday due to a toe injury.
Analysis: Through 10 games this season, Gibson has reached double-digit touches just one time, but he's averaging a solid 4.6 yards per carry on his 30 rushes and has also hauled in 30 of 36 passes for 269 yards and his only two touchdowns to date. Continues to excel in backup role
Gibson rushed four times for 13 yards and caught five of six targets for 42 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 29-26 loss to Seattle.
Analysis: Gibson's big receiving day was dwarfed by starter Brian Robinson's 157 combined yards, which also featured a 51-yard touchdown reception Sunday. Gibson still mazimized his fantasy value despite seeing single-digit touches, which has been a common trend for the veteran backup this season. That said, Gibson's low cap for carries limits his point potential for next Sunday's tilt against the Giants.

Takes 11 touches for 75 yards
Gibson had six carries for 34 yards and five catches for 42 yards in Sunday's 20-17 win over the Patriots.
Analysis: Gibson's snap share (44 percent) was right in the usual range, with his better-than-usual production at least partially due to Washington holding possession for more than 60 percent of the game. He did have five targets the week before as well, so it's possible the Commanders are trying to get him a bit more involved, though still not to an extent that would give fantasy managers confidence in starting Gibson for a Week 10 matchup at Seattle.

Five grabs in loss
Gibson rushed twice for 14 yards and secured all five of his targets for 28 yards in Sunday's 38-31 loss to the Eagles.
Analysis: Gibson played 37 of the Commanders' 72 offensive snaps, logging two more snaps than fellow running back Brian Robinson. His five catches were his most in a game so far this season, as Gibson remains Washington's top pass-catching option out of the backfield. With that said, Gibson's lack of involvement in the rushing attack limits his chances of being a consistent fantasy contributor. The 25-year-old will look to make more of an impact on offense when the Commanders visit the Patriots in Week 9.

Gets four touches
Gibson had two carries for seven yards and two catches for 24 yards in Sunday's 14-7 loss to the Giants.
Analysis: Gibson remains the top choice in obvious passing situations but now seems to be behind both Brian Robinson and Chris Rodriguez for carries. Rodriguez took a season-high seven carries for 31 yards Sunday, with Robinson getting eight totes for 23 yards and a touchdown. It's been one of the least productive backfields in the league on a cumulative basis, with little hope for mainstream value from anyone if all three are sharing work heading into a Week 8 game against Philadelphia.

Analysis: The touchdown was his first this season, with Gibson playing more than one-third of Washington's snaps most weeks but rarely seeing more than a handful of touches. He and the Commanders face the Giants in Week 7.

Makes impact as receiver Thursday
Gibson brought in four of six targets for 64 yards and didn't log a rush attempt in the Commanders' 40-20 loss to the Bears on Thursday night.
Analysis: Gibson finished third in receiving yards on the night for the Commanders, with the change-of-pace back seeing plenty of opportunity due to Washington's sizable deficit. Gibson's reception and receiving yardage tallies were both season highs, and the complete absence of rush attempts was essentially a byproduct of game script, although Gibson does remain the clear No. 2 running back behind Brian Robinson.

Seven touches in loss
Gibson rushed six times for 19 yards while securing his only target for seven yards in Sunday's 34-31 overtime loss to the Eagles.
Analysis: Gibson's disappointing season continued Sunday, as the veteran failed to produce for fantasy purposes against the Eagles. The fourth-year running back saw his snap percentage drop Week 4, handling a 39 percent snap share after seeing a 63 percent share Week 3. Fellow back Brian Robinson, however, continued to be more involved in the Commanders' offensive scheme. Going forward, Gibson will likely continue to be difficult to trust for consistent fantasy production, barring an injury to Robinson.…read more

Held to 24 total yards
Gibson had two carries for 17 yards and caught three of five targets for seven yards in a 37-3 loss to Buffalo on Sunday.
Analysis: He played a season-high 61 percent of snaps with the Commanders chasing a multi-score deficit all day, but it didn't add up to much production on a brutal afternoon for the team overall. Gibson has seven carries for 35 yards and seven catches for 61 yards through three weeks, while backfield mate Brian Robinson has a 47-216-2 rushing line and 3-49-1 receiving. A Week 4 trip to Philadelphia could mean another game with Gibson playing more than usual and Robinson a bit less.

Stuck in small role
Gibson had two carries for nine yards while catching all three of his targets for 44 yards in Sunday's 35-33 win over Denver.
Analysis: Gibson was limited to just five touches a week after receiving four, giving way to starter Brian Robinson, who had a two-touchdown day. The veteran backup was able to break off a 36-yard reception out of the backfield but was otherwise a non-factor. Gibson has provided fantasy value in the past while serving as Washington's starter, but he is an unappealing option against Buffalo next Sunday in his current role.

Gets four touches, loses fumble
Gibson had three carries for nine yards and caught his lone target for 10 yards in Sunday's 20-16 win over the Cardinals.
Analysis: Gibson got his first carry early in the second quarter, then lost a fumble on his second carry a few minutes later. His next touch was a reception midway through the fourth quarter, though he did play 35 percent of Washington's offensive snaps. Starting RB Brian Robinson played 61 percent, taking 19 carries for 59 yards and catching one of two targets for a seven-yard touchdown. Gets seven touches, one TD
Gibson had four carries for 15 yards and three catches for 10 yards and a touchdown in Monday's preseason matchup with the Ravens.
Analysis: Brian Robinson was the starter for a second straight week and again worked in a near-50/50 split with Gibson. The Commanders played their starters for the first half and now have kept them on the field for seven drives this preseason, with Robinson getting 13 opportunities (eight carries, five targets) and Gibson seeing 12 (six carries, six targets). Splits work with Robinson
Gibson carried the ball twice for seven yards and caught two of three targets for 13 yards in Friday's preseason win over the Browns.
Analysis: The Commanders used their first-team offense for three possessions despite wet field conditions, and during those drives Gibson wound up seeing one more touch than Brian Robinson (three carries for 16 yards). While neither back was effective, Gibson becomes a more appealing fantasy option if new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy continues to split the workload relatively equally between them rather than leaning more heavily on Robinson.

Expects to be third-down back
Gibson said Wednesday that he'll be in a "third-down back" role with Washington in 2023, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
Analysis: Meanwhile, Brian Robinson profiles as the top option on early downs, with most of Gibson's usage expected to come on passing downs. While suiting up for 15 games in 2022, Gibson produced 546 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 149 carries while also catching a career-high 46 passes for 353 yards and two scores.

Analysis: Gibson played through a foot fracture last December but then missed the final two weeks of the season after spraining his knee. He had surgery on his foot in the first week of January and seems to be back healthy for spring practices. The Commanders didn't add competition for Gibson's passing-down role this offseason, as the lone new face in the backfield at the start of OTAs is a sixth-round pick, Chris Rodriguez, who caught 20 passes in 40 games at Kentucky. Shut down for Week 18
Washington placed Gibson (knee/foot) on injured reserve Thursday, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
Analysis: Though Gibson's pair of lower-body injuries aren't believed to be long-term concerns, the Commanders will err on the side of caution by holding him out of Sunday's season finale against the Cowboys. By moving Gibson to IR, the Commanders were able to free up a spot on the 53-man roster for practice-squad signee Jaret Patterson, who will add depth to the backfield behind Brian Robinson (knee) and Jonathan Williams. Not practicing
Gibson (knee/foot) didn't practice Wednesday, Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Analysis: Gibson has been dealing with the foot injury for more than a month without missing a game, but the knee sprain he suffered Week 16 against San Francisco rendered him inactive for the Week 17 loss to Cleveland. With Washington having been eliminated from playoff contention, Gibson may be in line to sit out Sunday's season finale versus Dallas, though it's perhaps still possible he plays if he returns to practice Thursday or Friday.

Gibson (knee/foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Browns, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson has been dealing with a foot injury for a few weeks and then sprained his knee in last Saturday's loss to the 49ers. His absence for Week 17 could leave Brian Robinson in a three-down role, though it's also possible the Commanders give most of Gibson's usual workload to Jonathan Williams or Jaret Patterson (the latter of whom would need to be called up from the practice squad). Analysis: Gibson appears to be missing a third consecutive practice, which would bode poorly for his chances of suiting up Sunday versus the Browns. Friday's official practice report will reveal whether Gibson has an official injury designation for the contest, but fantasy managers will already want to begin preparing for a potential absence. Analysis: Gibson has opened Week 17 with back-to-back absences from practice due to knee and foot injuries, giving him just one more opportunity to get some on-field work before the Commanders potentially make a ruling on his availability ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns. If Gibson is limited or sidelined this weekend, rookie Brian Robinson likely would take on the lion's share of the backfield work for Washington, with Jonathan Williams on hand for anything that lingers.

Gibson (knee/foot) wasn't present for Thursday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson thus appears set to be listed as a non-participant for the second practice in a row, clouding his status for Sunday's game against the Browns. If Gibson is sidelined Week 17, Brian Robinson would have an even clearer path than usual to handling the bulk of the carries out of the backfield, while perhaps benefiting from more work on passing downs, too. Jonathan Williams would step in as the Commanders' No. 2 running back in place of Gibson.

Listed with foot, knee injuries
Gibson is listed as a non-participant in Wednesday's practice with foot and knee injuries, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Washington head coach Ron Rivera previously revealed Tuesday that Gibson had suffered a sprain in Saturday's 37-20 loss to San Francisco. Given that he was listed with a foot injury the past few weeks, it's reasonable to deduce that Gibson sprained his knee in Week 16, with the injury now putting his status in question for Sunday's matchup with the Browns. Brian Robinson could get more targets, and perhaps a few more carries than usual, if Gibson isn't ready to play Sunday.

Quiet besides fourth-quarter TD
Gibson rushed 14 times for 28 yards and a touchdown while catching two of four targets for 13 yards in Sunday's 36-27 loss to the Lions.
Analysis: Gibson was bottled up for most of the game but salvaged his afternoon with a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Washington was playing catch-up all game but didn't utilize Gibson extensively as a pass catcher out of the backfield after he caught seven passes for 72 yards in the season opener. He remains locked into the lead role in the Commanders' backfield heading into a Week 3 matchup with the Eagles.

Racks up 130 total yards
Gibson rushed 14 times for 58 yards and caught seven of eight targets for 72 yards in Sunday's 28-22 win over the Jaguars.
Analysis: Gibson turned in a solid effort on the ground (4.1 yards per carry), and the career-high eight targets were a welcome surprise for his fantasy managers. We previously reported (Aug. 20) that the power back was getting some extra work as a receiver this preseason to round out his skill set, so the spike in targets may not be an anomaly. Gibson should continue to dominate the running back touches in Washington, especially while rookie Brian Robinson (knee) mends on the reserve/non-football injury…read more

Set to face Jaguars in Week 1
As the Commanders' Week 1 contest against the Jaguars approaches, Gibson is in line to lead a backfield that is also slated to include J.D. McKissic and Jonathan Williams early on this season, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Rookie third-round draft choice Brian Robinson, who had been a candidate to see his share of backfield touches to begin the season, was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list by the Commanders on Thursday and will miss at least the team's first four games. Against the Jaguars, look for Gibson to reprise the starting role he held last season, with McKissic in line to see work in the passing game and Williams on hand for complementary snaps.

Not slated to play Saturday
Gibson isn't expected to play in Saturday's preseason game at Baltimore.
Analysis: Joining Gibson on the sideline are fellow Commanders running backs J.D. McKissic (groin), Brian Robinson and Jonathan Williams. With just about none of the team's regular skill-position players in line to suit up in the exhibition finale, that quartert seems poised to survive roster cuts Tuesday. That said, Gibson's ultimate workload is in question due to the impressive showing by the rookie Robinson during the preseason.

Becoming jack of all trades
Gibson rushed twice for three yards and caught three of four targets for 37 yards in Saturday's 24-14 loss to Kansas City. He also returned the opening kickoff 17 yards.
Analysis: Gibson worked in a change-of-pace role with the first-team offense, but it notably was rookie Brian Robinson who got the start and most of the playing time over that span. Gibson stayed in the game after backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke came in, playing an instrumental role as a pass catcher as Heinicke led Washington's only touchdown drive of the first half. Robinson looks like the favorite for most of the rushing work on early downs, while the impending return of J.D. McKissic (groin) will…read more

Practicing with special teams units
Gibson took snaps with the punt return team at Tuesday's practice, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Fortier adds that Gibson's spot on the unit (slot protector) has mostly been handled by rookie Brian Robinson, the third-round pick who shined in the preseason opener with the first-team offense after Gibson lost a fumble on the second drive. There had already been talk of Robinson stealing short-yardage work prior to training camp, and it now seems the rookie has a shot at more than that. Fumbles against Panthers
Gibson carried the ball two times for four yards and caught his only target for two yards in Saturday's 23-21 preseason loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: Gibson didn't make much of his limited opportunity and also fumbled deep in Washington's own territory to end the team's second offensive possession. He re-entered the game with the second-team offense but added little to his stat line. It's unclear what this performance means for Gibson's potential to contribute during the regular season, but rookie Brian Robinson tallied six carries for 26 yards and a touchdown.

No issues with hamstring so far
Gibson (hamstring) followed his ramp-up plan for the first week of training camp and now has resumed practicing with teammates, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: It sounds like Gibson has avoided any setbacks with the hamstring injury that limited his participation in spring practices. He also mentioned dropping a few pounds, going from the mid-230s to low 230s, though the Commanders listed him at 220 both last season and this year. Gibson reportedly wants to get down to 220-225 before Week 1, which especially makes sense if rumors of rookie Brian Robinson stealing short-yardage work are to be believed. Could lose goal-line carries?
Gibson (hamstring) may cede short-yardage work to rookie Brian Robinson, who has been getting a lot of first-team snaps in the opening days of training camp, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Gibson's absence due to the hamstring injury is obviously a factor, but the report suggests Robinson would have a role with the starters even if Washington's No. 1 back didn't have any injury concerns. Gibson has been bothered by his hamstring since June 7/8, with coach Ron Rivera suggesting Wednesday that the 24-year-old will ramp up his workload on the side before rejoining teammates in practice. Needs to ramp up before practicing
Head coach Ron Rivera said Gibson (hamstring) was held out of practice Wednesday due to "an abundance of caution," with the Commanders planning to ramp up his workload on the side field before he joins his teammates for drills, Matthew Paras of The Washington Times reports.
Analysis: Gibson injured his hamstring at OTAs and missed some of the later sessions. His absence from early training camp practices leaves more reps for passing-down specialist J.D. McKissic, third-round pick Brian Robinson and second-year pro Jaret Patterson. The Commanders may be extra cautious after last year's experience with Curtis Samuel picking up a soft-tissue injury during the offseason.

Opens training camp on side field
Gibson (hamstring) was spotted working out on a side field Wednesday during the first day of Washington's veteran training camp, Pete Hailey of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Analysis: Gibson may still be nursing the hamstring injury which caused him to miss a bit of time during OTAs, an issue which coach Ron Rivera downplayed at the time. The Commanders aren't yet practicing in pads, so it's too early to raise any alarms, but Gibson's status will warrant monitoring as training camp continues. In the meantime, rookie third-round pick Brian Robinson could continue to see an uptick of first-team reps.

Picks up minor hamstring injury
Gibson suffered a minor hamstring injury during OTAs on Wednesday, Pete Hailey of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Analysis: Head coach Ron Rivera used the word "slightly" to downplay the severity of Gibson's hamstring issue, so there's not yet any reason for significant worry about the possibility of the running back missing any portion of mandatory minicamp. Of course, considering the delicate nature of hamstring injuries, the Commanders will likely refrain from rushing Gibson back out on the field. In the meantime, rookie third-round pick Brian Robinson could benefit from increased reps with the first-team offense.

Coach Ron Rivera said Thursday he hopes Gibson and rookie third-round pick Brian Robinson will operate as a "potential 1-2 punch," Grant Paulsen of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Rivera likened the new backfield tandem of Gibson and Robinson to Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams, who operated as a formidable duo during his time as the Panthers' head coach. Gibson was already primed have his receiving upside limited by pass-catching complement J.D. Spectacular finish to season
Gibson rushed 21 times for 146 yards and a touchdown and brought in one of three targets for five yards in Washington's 22-7 win over the Giants on Sunday.
Analysis: The second-year back topped off the campaign with a spectacular showing, putting himself comfortably over the 1,000-yard mark in the process. Gibson was one of the few bright spots during a profoundly disappointing second half for Washington, as he gained 88 yards or more on the ground in three of the last six contests. Gibson (hip) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Giants, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: It is possible Washington scales back his workload in a game without playoff implications, especially after Jaret Patterson's solid showing last week when Gibson was on the COVID list, but it's also possible the second-year pro simply returns to his usual dominance of the rushing workload. He made his way back to the active roster Wednesday, but his practice reps continued to be capped by the hip issue. Washington placed Gibson (hip) on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday.
Analysis: According to John Keim of ESPN.com, Gibson is vaccinated, which means he was placed on the list as a result of testing positive. He'll theoretically have a chance to play Sunday against the Eagles if he can test out of the protocol in rapid fashion, though the timing of his placement on the list makes that highly unlikely. He'll more than likely give it a go this Sunday against the Eagles following a limited workload in the Week 16 blowout loss to Dallas. Gibson (shin) was a limited participant at Wednesday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Playing through a shin stress fracture since Week 4, Gibson came out of the team's recent bye and logged his second-high snap share (61 percent) of the season en route to 24 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns to go with two catches (on two targets) for 14 yards. The efficiency wasn't there, but he outproduced backup running back J.D. McKissic by a wide margin (26 versus six touches). As such, Gibson is the preferred Washington back, even though he'll continue to operate under practice…read more

Two-touchdown showing in win
Gibson rushed 24 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns and brought in both targets for 14 yards in Washington's 29-19 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday.
Analysis: Gibson put an exclamation point on Washington's upset win against the defending champs with his second one-yard touchdown of the contest. The score capped off a 19-play, 80-yard march that absorbed 10:26 of the fourth quarter and saw Gibson log a whopping nine carries. Gibson's multi-score tally was his second of the season, but he'll have a significant roadblock in trying to replicate it against a stingy Panthers defense in Week 11.

Good to go
Gibson (shin) has no injury designation for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson will continue to play through a shin fracture and work as Washington's lead runner, but he did run into trouble before the Week 9 bye, finishing three straight games with no touchdowns and less than 60 total yards while playing no more than 42 percent of offensive snaps. That, after playing at least 55 percent of snaps in Washington's first five games, with 432 total yards and four TDs. Part of it seems to be the shin injury, and part of it is J.D. Another limited showing
Gibson (shin) was limited at practice Thursday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Washington continues to manage the stress fracture in Gibson's shin, which contained him to between 31 and 56 percent of the offensive snaps in the five contests before the team's Week 9 bye. He still was productive during that span, averaging 15.4 touches for 60.2 yards from scrimmage per game while scoring three touchdowns. Though he's been limited for the team's first two practices of Week 10, Gibson told Peter Hailey of NBC Sports Washington on Wednesday that he's feeling better physically…read more

Remains limited after bye
Gibson (shin) was a limited participant at Wednesday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson played through a stress fracture in his shin in each of Washington's five games before a Week 9 bye, racking up 77 touches for 301 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns. In the same time span, change-of-pace back J.D. McKissic totaled a 50-325-1 line, respectively. Gibson appears to be operating under similar practice limitations from before the midseason respite, so his status should continue to be watched to ensure he's out there on game days.

Shares load in Sunday's loss
Gibson carried the ball eight times for 34 yards and caught all three of his targets for 20 yards in Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Broncos.
Analysis: His 11 touches exactly matched both J.D. McKissic (three carries, eight catches) and rookie Jaret Patterson (11 carries), with McKissic significantly out-producing both his backfield mates. While Gibson was cleared off the injury report prior to Sunday's game, Washington's treatment of the second-year back was a clear sign he isn't 100 percent, but he'll get some extra time to heal up during a Week 9 bye.

Cleared for Sunday
Gibson (shin) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game in Denver, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Gibson will continue playing through his stress fracture and figures to continue dominating Washington's rushing volume, but he has lost a few more snaps to pass-catching specialist J.D. McKissic in recent weeks, in part because Washington regularly has been chasing deficits. While the shin injury also may be a factor, Gibson still has 12 or more touches in every game this season.

Practicing again Friday
Gibson (shin) is participating at Friday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson has practiced as a limited participant this week due to the shin issue, and it appears he'll at least be working in that capacity again Friday. The 23-year-old played after being considered questionable for last week's loss to the Packers, though he saw action on only 41 percent of the offensive snaps. He still had 16 touches in the contest, but it's clear the hairline fracture in his shin is a limiting factor. Gibson appears on track to play Sunday at Denver, but he could continue to…read more

Remains limited Thursday
Gibson (shin) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Washington continues to place a cap on Gibson's practice reps, but the limitations haven't impacted his ability to play through a stress fracture in his shin over the last four games. During that stretch, he's combined for 66 touches for 247 yards from scrimmage and three TDs, while No. 2 running back J.D. McKissic concurrently earned 39 touches for 99 total yards and one score. Clearly, Gibson is the top back in an offense beset by injuries, making him a must play on a weekly basis.

Limited again by shin injury
Gibson (shin) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Gibson has managed to play through a hairline fracture in his shin for four consecutive outings, during which he's combined for 58 carries for 218 yards and three touchdowns to go with eight catches (on nine targets) for 29 yards. J.D. Quiet on 14 carries
Gibson ran for 51 yards on 14 carries against Green Bay on Sunday while catching two passes on two targets for five yards.
Analysis: Gibson continues to play through a hairline shin fracture that appears to be hindering him as a runner, and his sluggish 2021 rushing production to this point seems to support that idea. Through seven games, Gibson has 408 yards and three touchdowns on 103 carries, leaving him with an average of 4.0 yards per carry and just one 20-yard carry after producing five carries of 20-plus yards at 4.7 yards per carry over 170 attempts in 2020. Gibson (shin) is active for Sunday's game against the Packers.
Analysis: Gibson has been tending to a hairline fracture of his shin for a few weeks now, but the injury has yet to force him to miss any time. That said, Gibson's efficiency has nosedived over the last month, with the running back averaging just 3.5 yards per carry over Washington's past four games. Regardless, Gibson has displayed improvement of late and is feeling better as Week 7 action approaches. He now plans to tough it out for what will be at least a fourth straight week playing through a stress fracture, though it's possible J.D. McKissic gets more work if Gibson runs into trouble again. Questionable for Sunday
Gibson (shin) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Green Bay, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson aggravated the stress fracture in his shin during last week's loss to the Chiefs, though game script may have been the larger factor in his season-low 40 percent snap share. Gibson (shin) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: After sitting out Wednesday's session, Gibson has begun a slow ramp-up as Washington prepares for Sunday's visit to Green Bay. It's a positive sign for the running back, who has been playing through a stress fracture in his shin since Week 4. Gibson's offensive snap share suffered this past Sunday against the Chiefs -- a season-low 40 percent -- but he still had 12 touches, while J.D. McKissic had 16 on the other 60 percent.

Gibson (shin) was spotted participating in position drills Thursday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It remains to be seen how the team lists Gibson's participation level, but his presence at practice Thursday, in any capacity, is a step in the right direction for the running back after he sat out Wednesday's session. Though Gibson has been dealing with what's been described as as a stress fracture in his shin since Week 4, he's been able to suit up for Washington's three games since then.

Coach Ron Rivera said Monday that Gibson (calf) underwent an MRI, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson sustained a calf injury late in Sunday's Week 6 loss to Kansas City, and the results of his exam should help determine the extent of the issue. The 23-year-old rushed 10 times for 44 yards while hauling in two of three targets for no yards prior to his exit Sunday, and J.D. Gibson injured his calf during Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.
Analysis: Gibson was examined for a shin injury early in the contest but was able to return to action. Now, he's again being looked at by Washington trainers, only this time a calf issue is to blame. If he's unable to get back on the field, Gibson will finish Week 6 with 12 touches for 44 total yards. In Gibson's stead, J.D. McKissic will be the prime beneficiary, though undrafted rookie Jaret Patterson could get some run, too.

Gibson (shin) is now listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Kansas City, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The final injury report apparently wasn't quite final, with the team updating it after about 20 minutes to list Gibson as questionable rather than with no designation. He's nonetheless expected to continue playing through a shin fracture, just as he did the past two weeks when listed as questionable. Gibson (shin) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against Kansas City, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: He'll continue playing through a hairline fracture, having said himself that the injury isn't really bothering him, though it has limited his practice participation in recent weeks. Gibson took 34 carries for 123 yards and three touchdowns over his past two games, and he could be the clear centerpiece of Washington's offense come Sunday if WR Terry McLaurin (Q/hamstring) is absent or limited. Explodes for TD reception in loss
Gibson rushed 12 times for just 31 yards but brought in one of two targets for a 73-yard touchdown in Washington's 43-21 loss to the Bills on Sunday.
Analysis: Gibson's lackluster day on the ground was offset by his touchdown reception, a second-quarter play on which the speedy running back flashed his explosiveness by taking a screen pass and outrunning multiple Bills defenders to the end zone. His rushing yardage tally was a disappointment after he'd combined for 159 yards on the ground over the first two games, but he'll look to capitalize on a potentially favorable Week 4 road matchup versus the Falcons.

Gibson (shoulder) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Through two games, Gibson ranks 18th in offensive snap share among NFL running backs at 62.9 percent, which has translated to 33 carries for 159 yards (4.8 YPC) and five catches (on seven targets) for 22 yards. Meanwhile, J.D. McKissic (40.3 percent) has totaled 10 touches for 101 yards from scrimmage and one touchdown. With a capped session under his belt to kick off Week 3, Gibson doesn't seem in danger of missing time, but his status nonetheless bears watching as the week goes on.

Efficient on ground in win
Gibson rushed 13 times for 69 yards and brought in both targets for four yards in Washington's 30-29 win over the Giants on Thursday night.
Analysis: Gibson's rushing opportunities were ultimately capped partly by game script despite the favorable matchup, as backfield mate J.D. McKissic ended up seeing quite a bit of work in a frenetic fourth quarter. Gibson still turned in a second straight efficient rushing performance to open the 2021 campaign, giving him 159 yards on 33 carries over his first pair of contests. He also remained involved as a receiver to a modest extent and will look to bump his workload on the ground back up in a Week 3…read more

Full participant Tuesday
Gibson (shoulder) was a full participant during Tuesday's practice session, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Gibson's progression from limited to full after just one session clears the way for him to play in Thursday's contest against the Giants. The second-year back got off to a solid start in the season opener versus the Chargers, rushing 20 times for 90 yards while reeling in three of his five targets for another 18 yards. He should be in line to head the Washington backfield again this week.

Limited to start week
Gibson (shoulder) was listed as limited on Washington's practice estimate Monday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson had his shoulder examined by the training staff during the season opener against the Chargers but stayed in the game. His status for Thursday's game against the Giants isn't in danger, barring any setbacks, but Gibson's practice participation still will be worth monitoring throughout the short week.

Totals 108 yards in loss
Gibson carried the ball 20 times for 90 yards and caught three of his five targets for 18 yards in Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Chargers. He also fumbled.
Analysis: Perhaps more crucial than Gibson's final yardage total was the fact he commanded a three-down role, seeing more targets than J.D. McKissic (one) while out-carrying the combo of McKissic and Jaret Patterson by a whopping 20-to-3 margin. It certainly helps that the second-year back looked good with the extra usage, bursting through the line of scrimmage on a number of occasions. Handles nine touches
Gibson rushed the ball seven times for 28 yards and also recorded two receptions for 19 yards in Friday's preseason game against Cincinnati.
Analysis: Gibson played in all four series with presumed starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, which equated to the entirety of the first quarter. Though he didn't find the end zone, Gibson did provide chunk gains of nine and seven yards on the ground as well as a 14-yard reception. Gibson has been in the news recently after Kyle Allen told the media that the team wants to use him in a Christian McCaffrey role this season. Feeling healthy again
Gibson says he no longer feels lingering effects from last year's turf toe injury, Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Two months ago, Gibson revealed that his toe still had some discomfort that required treatment, though nothing that was impacting his participation in practice. Even if his risk of re-injury remains somewhat heightened, this doesn't sound like a threat to Gibson's availability or workload at the beginning of the year. He's locked in as Washington's starting running back and lead runner, with potential to take more receiving work away from J.D. McKissic this year. Washington coach Ron Rivera…read more

Shines at OTAs despite toe issue
Gibson (toe) hasn't shown any limitations during OTAs in June, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Running backs coach Randy Jordan and head coach Ron Rivera both had lofty praise for Gibson, with Jordan even using the term "night and day" to describe the running back's development since last year. However, it wasn't all good news coming out of OTAs, as Gibson revealed he's still receiving treatment for the toe injury that sidelined him for Weeks 14 and 15 of his rookie season. Still bothered by toe
Gibson said Wednesday that he hasn't fully healed from the toe injury he suffered last season, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: After missing Weeks 14 and 15, the rookie returned for Weeks 16 and 17 and Washington's lone playoff contest, though he was limited to 185 total yards and zero touchdowns over the three-game stretch. Gibson didn't need surgery after the season, but it's apparently been a slow process working his way back from turf toe, as he still notices pain and discomfort at times. Won't need toe procedure
Gibson indicated that he won't require an offseason procedure to address the toe issue he played through down the stretch this season, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Gibson, who is currently listed on the Washington Football Team web site as 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, also noted that he hopes to slim down some this offseason, with an eye toward gaining more explosiveness as a runner. In 14 games this past season, the 2020 third-rounder carried 170 times for 795 yards and 11 TDs, while catching 36 of his 44 targets for 247 yards. Struggles in wild-card loss
Gibson (toe) rushed 14 times for 31 yards and secured two of three targets for four yards in Washington's 31-23 wild-card loss to the Buccaneers on Saturday night.
Analysis: The rookie back was able to work through his toe issue as he had during the final two regular-season games, but he unsurprisingly found running room at a premium against the Buccaneers' No. 1-ranked rush defense. Despite missing two games to injury and splitting carries throughout the majority of the campaign, Gibson still finished his first pro season with a solid 4.7 yards per carry, 11 rushing touchdowns and 36 receptions over 14 regular-season games. Analysis: For a third consecutive contest, Gibson is playing through a turf toe injury. In the first two outings, he combined for 33 touches for 150 yards from scrimmage. That said, he hasn't reached the end zone since torching the Cowboys for three touchdowns back in Week 12.

Questionable for wild-card round
Gibson (toe) is listed as questionable for Saturday's wild-card game versus the Buccaneers, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson sat out Weeks 14 and 15 due to a turf toe injury, but he was able to cap the season with appearances in both of Washington's final two games of the campaign. Considering he took on 33 touches for 150 yards from scrimmage in those outings, he should be good to go this weekend, which will be confirmed approximately 90 minutes before Saturday's 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff.

Looking good for Saturday
Gibson (toe) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Gibson played through the toe injury the past two weeks, but he felt well enough to handle 20 touches and play 59 percent of the offensive snaps in Washington's victory over Philadelphia in the regular-season finale. He draws a tough matchup in the wild-card round, facing a Bucs defense that led the league in both rushing yards allowed (80.6 per game) and opponent yards per carry (3.6).

Gets in work on side
Gibson (toe) worked with the training staff on the side during Wednesday's practice, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Gibson played through a turf toe injury Weeks 16 and 17, racking up 136 yards on 29 rushes and hauling in four of five targets for 14 yards. He didn't log any practice reps last week before suiting up for the regular-season finale against the Eagles, so he doesn't necessarily have to take part in drills this week to be cleared for Saturday's wild-card game versus the Buccaneers. Wednesday's injury report will reveal whether or not Gibson made an appearance on the practice field.

Listed as DNP
Gibson (toe) was listed as a non-participant on Tuesday's practice estimate, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Gibson logged 37 of a possible 63 snaps on offense in this past Sunday's playoff-clinching win over the Eagles, en route to carrying 19 times for 75 yards. With no reported setbacks in that contest, it seems likely that Gibson's DNP listing Tuesday is indicative of him continuing to manage the toe issue that led to him being listed as questionable heading into Week 17 action.

Posts 75 yards in crucial win
Gibson (toe) rushed 19 times for 75 yards and caught his lone target for six yards in Sunday's playoff-clinching win over the Eagles.
Analysis: Gibson concludes his rookie campaign with 795 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 170 carries (4.7 yards per tote) while catching 36 passes for 247 more yards. Washington unearthed a gem in the third round of this year's draft, and the breakout back let the world know with a monstrous three-touchdown showcase against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Analysis: Gibson is playing through a turf toe injury at the moment, which sidelined him Weeks 14 and 15 before he mustered 69 yards from scrimmage on 13 touches last Sunday against the Panthers. GIbson (toe) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: There were no reports that Gibson suffered a setback in his return to action in last week's loss to Carolina, but there will inevitably be some level of concern after he was held out of practice Wednesday through Friday. If he doesn't end up playing Sunday, Washington likely would split backfield work between J.D. McKissic and Peyton Barber, as was the case Weeks 14 and 15.

Gibson (toe) isn't participating in the media-access portion of Friday's practice, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson returned from a two-game absence for last week's loss to the Panthers, taking 13 touches for 69 yards while playing 30 percent of offensive snaps. The missed practice time might seem worrisome, but head coach Ron Rivera has said the rookie running backs is "fine," and offensive coordinator Scott Turner said Gibson's reduced snap share last week was a product of game script. Tallies 69 yards in return
Gibson carried the ball 10 times for 61 yards in Week 16 against the Panthers. He added three receptions for eight yards.
Analysis: Gibson returned to the field for the first time since Week 13 after recovering from a toe injury. Washington fell behind and was scripted out of their run game early on, though Gibson still accounted for 10 of the team's 19 rushing attempts -- three of which went to quarterbacks. Gibson (toe) was limited at Thursday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: For a second session in a row, Gibson was contained to individual drills, hence the 'limited' tag. Afterward, coach Ron Rivera told JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington that Gibson "looked good," "took a number of reps" and "is making progress" through his turf toe injury. Gibson (ankle) was a full participant in Tuesday's practice, Kyle Stackpole of Washington's official site reports.
Analysis: Washington listed Gibson as a non-participant on its initial Week 12 injury report, but the rookie running back was likely just receiving a maintenance day coming off a 17-touch, 104-yard outing in Sunday's win over the Bengals. His return to full activity Tuesday suggests Gibson should be ready to lead Washington's ground game Thanksgiving Day against the Cowboys.

Held out of practice
Gibson (ankle) did not practice Monday, Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Analysis: Gibson may simply be receiving a bit of rest with a short week ahead of Thursday's game in Dallas, so for now his status simply bears monitoring. The rookie running back has compiled five rushing scores in his last four games. J.D. McKissic and Peyton Barber would handle Washington's backfield reps if Gibson ends up missing any time.

Pushes TD streak to four
Gibson rushed 16 times for 94 yards and a touchdown while catching one of two targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 20-9 win over the Bengals.
Analysis: Gibson opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown plunge late in the first quarter, then helped set up Steven Sims' three-yard touchdown reception in the third with a pair of runs over 15 yards. He finished six yards shy of his second career 100-yard rushing performance, but Gibson's up to five touchdowns in the last four games and eight overall. The rookie third-round pick should continue to handle a sizable workload on the ground against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving barring a large early…read more

Scores twice in narrow defeat
Gibson carried 13 times for 45 yards and two touchdowns while catching all four of his targets for 20 yards during Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Lions.
Analysis: Gibson struggled to the tune of 3.5 yards per carry against a beatable Detroit defensive front, but he wound up with an admirable fantasy line thanks to a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter. He also reached four receptions for the fourth time in his last six games, though he did little in that department outside a 13-yard catch and run. The dynamic rookie now has four touchdowns in his last three games and seven through his first nine NFL outings. He'll look to add to his numbers…read more

Practices in full Thursday
Gibson (shoulder) practiced in full Thursday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Washington capped Gibson's practice reps Wednesday due to a shoulder issue, only to clear him for all activity one day later. With his health not in question, he can focus on Sunday's matchup against the Lions, who have allowed a whopping 186.5 yards from scrimmage per game and 15 touchdowns to running backs through eight contests this season.

Dealing with shoulder injury
Gibson didn't practice Wednesday due to a shoulder injury, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson is coming off a career-low nine touches in Sunday's loss to the Giants, resulting in 55 yards from scrimmage and one touchdown. His offensive snap share (46 percent) wasn't out of the norm, but perhaps the shoulder issue forced Washington to use J.D. McKissic a bit more (12 touches, 83 percent share). In any case, Gibson's status will be one to watch as the weekend approaches to get a sense of his availability for Week 10.

Scores TD in losing effort
Gibson collected 20 rushing yards and one touchdown on six carries, adding three receptions for 35 yards during Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Giants. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Gibson garnered six of nine RB carries for Washington while collecting his team's lone rushing score, but J.D. McKissic dominated the position's passing-game work, commanding 14 targets to the rookie's three. The Memphis product posted an outstanding 128-yard, one-touchdown effort on 20 carries in Week 7 before his inefficient rushing outing Sunday, but in terms of his receiving upside, it's now been two consecutive games Gibson has been held to three or fewer receptions. He had accumulated…read more

Thrives in workhorse role
Gibson carried 20 times for 128 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 25-3 win over the Cowboys.
Analysis: Gibson gashed the struggling Dallas defense for 6.4 yards per carry while scoring a 12-yard touchdown in the first quarter. He failed to haul in his only target in the passing game, but that was mostly due to the fact that his team played from ahead for most of the game and was content to keep the ball on the ground for the most part. Gibson could receive a similar workload in what should be a competitive game against the Giants in Week 9 following the WFT's bye, and he'll look to add to his…read more

Posts 55 total yards in loss
Gibson rushed nine times for 30 yards and secured four of five targets for 25 yards in the Washington Football Team's 20-19 loss to the Giants on Sunday.
Analysis: Gibson logged just one more carry than backfield mate J.D. McKissic and saw one fewer target, as coach Ron Rivera continued to keep the workload split fairly evenly between the two. Naturally, that approach isn't doing fantasy managers any favors, and with McKissic actually more productive on a per-touch basis Sunday, it isn't likely Gibson separates into a true lead-back role any time soon. As such, the rookie's fantasy prospects remain mixed heading into a Week 7 battle against the Cowboys.

Logs full practice Thursday
Gibson (toe) practiced fully Thursday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: One day removed from having limitations on his practice reps, Gibson handled all of them. After earning 11 touches Week 1, he's averaged 14.8 touches for 72.8 yards from scrimmage per game and scored three TDs over the last four contests. Considering he's earning most of the RB touches for Washington, Gibson will look to strike Sunday against a Giants defense that has allowed 172.8 total yards per game to running backs this season.

Limited by toe injury
Gibson (toe) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Gibson is a new addition to the injury report, after handling his typical workload (16 touches, 56 percent snap share) in Sunday's 30-10 loss to the Rams. His ability to practice -- even on a limited basis -- suggests he's expected to be available for this weekend's game against the Giants. The rookie has taken nine or more carries in every game, and he now has back-to-back weeks with five targets.

Compiles 51 total yards in loss
Gibson rushed 11 times for 27 yards and brought in all five targets for 24 yards in the Washington Football Team's 30-10 loss to the Rams on Sunday.
Analysis: The versatile running back once again paced the backfield in carries and had a solid role in the passing game, but with the duo of Kyle Allen and Alex Smith averaging a minuscule 3.7 yards per attempt, there just wasn't much upside to be had. Gibson does appear to enjoy clear lead-back status at the moment, and the fact he's seen five targets apiece in back-to-back games is certainly encouraging. Gibson will look for more overall production and opportunity in a favorable Week 6 road matchup…read more

Powers Washington offense
Gibson carried the ball 13 times for 46 yards and a touchdown in Week 4 against Baltimore. He added four receptions on five targets for 82 yards.
Analysis: After Gibson showed glimpses of promise in Week 3, he provided a breakout performance one week later against the Ravens. He commanded 13 of the team's 22 rushing attempts, including a goal-line carry that he converted for a two-yard score. Gibson also showed explosiveness in the passing game, taking a screen pass for 40 yards halfway through the second quarter. He appears to have taken over as the clear lead back in Washington's backfield heading into a Week 5 matchup against the Rams.

Leads Washington in rushing
Gibson carried the ball nine times for 49 yards and a touchdown in Week 3 against the Browns. He also added three catches for 11 yards.
Analysis: Gibson found the end zone for the second consecutive game, converting a two-yard score to cap off a third-quarter drive. While that helped him to a productive day, he also broke off rushes of 13 and nine yards. The only downside to his performance was a lost fumble to end the first half, though the mistake did not have a major impact on the outcome of the game. While Gibson still saw only nine of the 22 carries out of Washington's backfield, it seems to be only a matter of time before he…read more

Scores first NFL touchdown
Gibson ran the ball 13 times for 55 yards and a touchdown and caught one of two targets for minus-three yards in Sunday's 30-15 loss to the Cardinals.
Analysis: His first NFL score came late in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard run as Washington attempted to mount a comeback. Gibson continues to show flashes of his talent, and the third-round pick could find some success in Week 3's road tilt against a Browns defense that just gave up 86 scrimmage yards to Joe Mixon.

Receives 11 touches in debut
Gibson gained 36 yards on nine carries and added two additional yards while snaring both his targets during Sunday's 27-17 win over the Eagles.
Analysis: Making his NFL debut, Gibson led the team in rushing despite receiving roughly half as many carries as Peyton Barber. The majority of his production came on a nifty 20-yard scamper, but nevertheless, it was encouraging to see him average 4.0 yards per carry against one of the tougher run defenses in the league. Barber did score twice on the day, but perhaps Gibson's more productive per-touch numbers could earn him additional usage next Sunday against the Cardinals.

Behind McKissic on depth chart
Washington listed Gibson as the No. 2 running back on the unofficial depth chart the team released Tuesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: J.D. McKissic sits atop the depth chart heading into Week 1, but his presence there doesn't necessarily mean he'll take Washington's first snap or lead the backfield in carries and touches in Sunday's season opener versus the Eagles. Instead, Washington is expected to make use of a committee of running backs that includes McKissic, Gibson, Peyton Barber and Bryce Love. The latter two backs will likely see most of their use in pure running situations, while McKissic's skills as a pass catcher…read more

Emergence contributes to AP release
Gibson's emergence during training camp played a role in Washington's decision to release Adrian Peterson on Friday, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Analysis: The third-round rookie already was ticketed for a role in the Week 1 gameplan, but it was Peterson who was widely viewed as the favorite to serve as the lead runner. It's now possible GIbson handles the job, though this report notes that Peyton Barber could also get carries, and the team still has J.D. McKissic for passing downs. Gibson is the one with three-down potential, even if it doesn't materialize right away.

Getting work with starters
Gibson had a couple nice runs with the first-team offense at the beginning of Monday's practice, Kyle Stackpole of the official team website reports.
Analysis: Washington seems to be taking a mix-and-match approach with its running backs, splitting first-team reps between Gibson, Adrian Peterson, Bryce Love, J.D. McKissic and Peyton Barber. While Peterson remains the favorite for the Week 1 start, it's Gibson who offers the highest ceiling for fantasy value down the road, combining pass-catching skill with 4.39 speed in a 228-pound frame. Peterson and Barber are early down bruisers with minimal receiving ability, while McKissic is an undersized…read more
