Pre-Season Outlook
Olave went north of 1,000 yards both of his first two NFL seasons, solidifying himself as the No. 1 receiver for a Saints offense that's still searching for its post-Drew Brees identity. He's neither especially strong nor large (6-0, 187), making up for it with 4.39 speed and precise route-running. The 11th overall pick from the 2022 NFL Draft showed some improvement last year picking up yards after the catch (4.2, compared to 2.9 his rookie year), but that's never likely to be a strength. Instead, Olave will need to further improve his already-impressive ability to create separation at all levels of the field. He was targeted on more than one-fourth of his routes both of the past two years, and the high rate may well continue in 2024 with the Saints otherwise fielding WR Rashid Shaheed, RB Alvin Kamara and TE Juwan Johnson as their veteran pass catchers. A better season from QB Derek Carr and modest improvement from Olave himself might be enough to spark a Year 3 breakout.
