The Panthers recorded two sacks and a fumble recovery in the 20-17 win over the Giants in Week 11.
Analysis: The Panthers got their third win of the season and sent QB Daniel Jones to the bench in the process, but this is still a brutal defense unit that has allowed a league-high 31.0 points per game while forcing just 11 turnovers (16th). There's no reason to take on that level of risk in Week 12 versus the Chiefs, who have scored 24.0 points per game (11th), including at least 21 points in five of the last six games.

The Panthers recorded a sack and no takeaways in the 23-22 win over the Saints in Week 9.
Analysis: This was the Saints' best performance of the season, but they still have allowed a league-high 32.6 points per game. This defense has showcased little upside this year with just 10 sacks (30th) and eight takeaways (21st). Despite this, there's reason for hope in Week 10 versus the Giants, who have produced a league-low 15.8 points per game with 11 turnovers through nine games. Managers in redraft leagues probably shouldn't take the risk, but there's certainly DFS appeal.

The Panthers recorded two sacks and two fumble recoveries in the 28-14 loss to the Broncos in Week 8.
Analysis: This was one of the better defensive performances by the Panthers this season, but it's still been a putrid campaign. Through eight games, the Panthers have allowed a league-high 33.8 points per game while posting just nine sacks (30th). Now, QB Derek Carr (oblique) could return in Week 9. Carr helped the Saints average a whopping 28.0 points per game through the first five weeks, making Panthers D/ST too risky this week.

The Panthers recorded a sack and no takeaways in the 40-7 loss to the Commanders in Week 7.
Analysis: The Panthers have allowed 34 points in four straight games, and they've given up 34.7 points per game -- the most in the league and 6.7 points more than the Cowboys, who have allowed the second-most points in the league. There are very limited circumstances where Panthers D/ST should be started, but it could be an option in the deepest formats in Week 8 versus the Broncos, who have scored 20.7 points per game (21st) while giving up 10 turnovers (21st).

The Panthers recorded a fumble recovery and no sacks in the 38-20 loss to the Falcons in Week 6.
Analysis: The Panthers have given up a league-high 33.8 points per game. They've averaged two sacks per game and one takeaway per game, but the weekly risk is disastrous. There's no reason to take on this level of risk on the road versus the Commanders, who have scored 29.7 points per game (second) while giving up just three turnovers (third).

The Panthers recorded a sack and no takeaways in the 36-10 loss to the Bears in Week 5.
Analysis: The Panthers allowed rookie QB Caleb Williams to throw for 304 yards, as they allowed 34-plus points for the third time in five games. The Panthers have given up a league-high 33 points per game while contributing just six sacks (29th). This team faces significant risk in Week 6 versus the Falcons, who are hitting their stride by scoring 26 or more points in back-to-back weeks against the Saints and Buccaneers. The Panthers aren't on those team's levels, making them unstartable in Week 6.

The Panthers recorded an interception and no sacks in the 34-24 loss to the Bengals in Week 4.
Analysis: The Panthers have allowed a league-high 32.3 points per game while producing just five sacks (30th). There's a significant risk starting this unit in any format, but there's some upside against the Bears, who have coughed up six turnovers (22nd) while scoring just 19.3 points per game (20th). However, the weapons in Chicago are too dangerous to take the risk on Panthers D/ST in season-long formats.

The Panthers recorded three sacks and an interception in the 36-22 win over the Raiders in Week 3.
Analysis: The Panthers have allowed at least 22 points in each game this year, rounding out to a league-high 31.7 points per game.. While they have forced an intriguing four turnovers thus far, their pass rush has been abysmal, making this unit unstartable in Week 4 versus the Bengals, who have WR Tee Higgins healthy now and have scored 25-plus points in back-to-back games.

The Panthers recorded two takeaways and a sack in the 26-3 loss to the Chargers in Week 2.
Analysis: The Panthers have allowed a league-high 73 points through two weeks. They have produced just two sacks, which is highly concerning for any upside, but their three takeaways is intriguing, especially when going against the Raiders in Week 3. The Raiders are coming off an emotional win over the Ravens last week, scoring 26 points against their fierce defense. The Panthers recorded a sack and no takeaways in the 47-10 loss to the Saints in Week 1.
Analysis: Saints QB Derek Carr only threw the ball 23 times but showed excellent efficiency, while RBs Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams starred on the ground. Now, DE Derrick Brown (knee), potentially the team's best defensive player, is done for the season. Things are only getting worse for the Panthers, making this defense too tough to start in Week 2 against the Chargers.

The Panthers will take on the Saints in Week 1.
Analysis: The Panthers moved on from OLB Brian Burns this offseason and are hoping to replace him with Jadeveon Clowney. While it's clearly a downgrade, Clowney posted 9.5 sacks last year and will be able to hold his own. The opening matchup against the Saints is intriguing because they'll be starting a rookie at left tackle and should have a stable floor with QB Derek Carr starting. However, the ceiling is probably limited because the Saints gave up just 18 turnovers last year (sixth).

The Panthers traded LB Brian Burns to the Giants in March.
Analysis: It's nearly impossible to replace Burns in the draft or in free agency, as he posted 20.5 sacks over the previous two seasons. Still, they made a strong attempt to fill the void with LB D.J. Wonnum and LB Jadeveon Clowney, who combined for 17.5 sacks last year. The Panthers have an unproven secondary =, too, and they allowed 24.5 points per game (29th) last season. It could be another turbulent campaign, leaving this unit only viable as an occasional streamer.

It's unclear if QB Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) will be ready to play in Week 17, but regardless, the ceiling with this defense is so low that it can't be started in Week 17 fantasy championships.

Analysis: This defense has struggled all year across nearly every relevant category. It ranks 31sst with 26.2 points allowed per game, 32nd with just nine takeaways and 32nd with 20 sacks. Analysis: It was yet another discouraging outing by the Panthers, who have given up a whopping 27.5 points per game (31st) this season while forcing a league-low seven turnovers. Their run defense is particularly suspect, and now they'll face RB Derrick Henry and the Titans in Week 12. The Titans have generated a mere 16.8 points per game (27th), but they've protected the ball well (12 turnovers). As a result, it's tough to get excited about Panthers D/ST in any format.

They have provided minimal upside for fantasy purposes with a league-low seven takeaways, so they need an ideal matchup to be start-worthy. Analysis: The Panthers' starting defense will be fully healthy if Jackson is healthy. The Panthers recorded a sack and no takeaways in the 26-24 loss to the Browns in Week 1.
Analysis: The Panthers had no answer for the Browns on the ground, and they' could struggle again versus RB Saquon Barkley, who rushed for 164 yards in the opener. However, there's plenty of upside for Panthers D/ST. QB Daniel Jones doesn't have any trusted weapons outside of Barkley, and he can play sloppy. He threw a pick and lost a fumble in Week 1 versus the Titans.

CB Jaycee Horn (foot) was activated from the PUP list and played in the final preseason game.
Analysis: The 2021 first-round pick is expected to start on Carolina's defense opposite CB Donte Jackson, and they'll get some help from safeties Xavier Woods and Jeremy Chinn. However, this defense needs a lot of help. Last year, it finished 21st with 23.8 points allowed per game and 26th with 16 takeaways, though it managed to rank 14th with 39 sacks. Their pass rush should generate some big games for fantasy purposes, and they'll get a favorable schedule to start the year against the Browns and Giants.

The only defensive player on the PUP list to begin training camp for the Panthers is CB Jaycee Horn (foot).
Analysis: Horn apparently isn't dealing with a serious injury, so he could be ready for the preseason opener Aug. 13 in Washington. The Panthers D/ST will be heavily relying on the improvement of its young pieces like Horn, though it did sign S Xavier Woods during the offseason.

The Panthers ranked second in total defense (305.9 YPG) and 21st in scoring defense (23.8 PPG) in 2021 and lost pass rusher Haason Reddick during the offseason.
Analysis: Reddick had 11 sacks for Carolina last year, and the team didn't do much to replace that production via free agency or the draft. S Xavier Woods signed as a free agent and should bolster the secondary, but the Panthers will mostly rely on the expected improvement of their young talent both in the pass rush and on the back end to carry their defense in 2022, with CB Jaycee Horn, DT Derrick Brown and DEs Yetur Gross-Matos and Brian Burns headlining that group.

The Saints get back QB Taysom Hill from the COVID-19 list this week, so this matchup isn't as appealing as it could have been. The Panthers D/ST hasn't made much of an impact since Week 10 and is a below-average option for Week 17, though Hill's limitations as a passer should provide some turnover opportunities.
