In his last three games Cooper Rush has completed 17 of 27 downfield pass attempts (10+ air yards) for 328 yards and 6 touchdowns without an interception, producing a +15.8% completion percentage over expected (3rd-highest in NFL in that span) and 12.1 yards per attempt (8th-most).

Leads Cowboys to upset win
Rush completed 26 of 35 passes for 292 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 26-24 win over Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Rush delivered arguably his best showing of the season to lead Dallas to an upset win in primetime. He completed five passes of more than 20 yards, including 52- and 34-yard deep completions to CeeDee Lamb, to average 8.3 yards per attempt. Rush also avoided mistakes, as he didn't turn the ball over and was sacked just once. The only disappointing aspect of the showing was that he found the end zone only one time, on a 10-yard connection with Jalen Tolbert late in the first quarter.

Three TDs in win
Rush completed 18 of 29 passes for 214 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 30-14 win over the Panthers. He added four rushes for five yards.
Analysis: Rush took some time to get the Cowboys' offense moving, but that changed on a drive early in the second quarter during which he went 5-for-5 with 70 yards and a 14-yard touchdown pass to CeeDee Lamb. He went on to tally two additional passing scores to Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks to record the first three-touchdown game of his career and complete the blowout victory over Carolina. Tosses two TDs in loss
Rush completed 16 of 31 passes for 183 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and rushed twice for five yards in the Cowboys' 27-20 loss to the Bengals on Monday night.
Analysis: Rush had a harder time than might have been envisioned against a Bengals defense that did a solid job in coverage for the most part and also compiled three sacks in addition to a second-quarter interception at Cincinnati's four-yard line. The veteran backup did start off his night in a positive fashion with an 11-yard touchdown toss to CeeDee Lamb on fourth down in the first quarter, and he added a three-yard scoring pass to Brandin Cooks early in the third quarter. Limits mistakes on Thanksgiving
Rush completed 21 of 36 passes for 195 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions in Thursday's 27-20 win over the Giants. He added five rushes for zero yards.
Analysis: Rush wasn't asked to do much, as the Cowboys cashed in a pick-six and also scored on a short field to begin the third quarter. As a result, Rush didn't have to be aggressive in pushing the ball down the field, but he didn't turn the ball over and didn't take a sack to keep the Cowboys' offense on schedule. His 5.4 yards per attempt weren't inspiring, but he did throw for at least one touchdown for the third time in his four starts this season. Rush will likely have to be more aggressive in a…read more

Set to play Thursday
Rush (knee) doesn't have a designation for Thursday's game versus the Giants, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Rush was estimated as a limited participant on practice reports issued Monday and Tuesday, but his ability to handle a full session Wednesday has paved the way for him to continue to lead the Cowboys offense Week 13. While he won't have tight end Jake Ferguson (concussion) for a second consecutive contest Thursday, Rush will have top wideouts CeeDee Lamb (back/foot) and Brandin Cooks (knee) -- the latter of whom was activated from injured reserve Wednesday -- available to him.

Remains limited Tuesday
Rush (knee) was listed as a limited participant in Tuesday's practice, Jane Slater of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Rush is dealing with some knee soreness, but the expectation is that he'll be able to play Thursday against the Giants. He's coming off a solid Week 12 performance against the Commanders, when he completed 24 of 32 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns in Dallas' 34-26 win. He gets another softer matchup against a Giants defense that has recorded just one interception all season.

Estimated as limited Monday
Rush (knee) was listed as limited on Monday's practice estimate, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Monday's session was merely a walkthrough, per Archer, but Rush's listed limitations make his status worth tracking ahead of Thursday's 4:30 p.m. ET game against the Giants. For his part, head coach Mike McCarthy downplayed the QB's knee issue following Week 12 action. "He's got some work to do, but I think we're gonna be fine," McCarthy noted of Rush on Monday. However, in the event that Rush encounters any setbacks, Trey Lance would be next in line to log the Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day start.

Produces solid numbers in win
Rush completed 24 of 32 passes for 247 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and netted one yard on four rushes in the Cowboys' 34-26 win over the Commanders on Sunday. He also fumbled once but recovered.
Analysis: Rush was able to put together a successful, turnover-free encore to his season-high 354-yard tally on Monday night against the Texans, posting his first multi-TD tally in the process. The veteran backup connected for both of his scoring tosses in the second half, hitting Jalen Tolbert (six yards) and Luke Schoonmaker (22 yards) with end-zone strikes in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Remains starter
Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Rush will remain the Cowboys' starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Commanders, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Rush will make his third consecutive start in Week 12, even though the Cowboys have been outscored 68-16 in losses to the Eagles and Texans over the past two games. With Dallas trailing by at least two scores for much of Monday's game against Houston, Rush dropped back 60 times on the night, taking five sacks while completing 32 of 55 pass attempts for a touchdown and a career-high 354 yards. Throws for 354 yards in loss
Rush completed 32 of 55 pass attempts for 354 yards, one touchdown and one interception while taking two carries for as many yards in Monday's 34-10 loss to the Texans.
Analysis: Rush wound up piling up enough numbers to serve as a formidable bye week replacement off waivers, despite the one-sided nature of Monday's primetime matchup. The veteran backup did throw an interception while seeing multiple balls bounce off of Houston defenders' hands, which could have derailed his night from a fantasy standpoint. Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Monday that Rush will start next Monday's game against the Texans, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: In his first start of the 2024 season in this past Sunday's 34-6 loss to the Eagles, Rush subbing in for the injured Dak Prescott (hamstring) and completed 13 of his 23 passing attempts for 45 yards, while rushing twice for two yards with two lost fumbles. Struggles in first 2024 start
Rush completed 13 of 23 pass attempts for 45 yards while rushing twice for two yards and two lost fumbles in Sunday's 34-6 loss to the Eagles.
Analysis: Rush failed to move the ball on offense against Philadelphia before mercifully being replaced late in the blowout loss. The veteran backup has had success in place of an injured Dak Prescott (hamstring) in the past, but Sunday's dud did not fall into that category of performances. Trey Lance didn't fare much better in his brief appearance, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the backups switch roles against the Texans in Week 11 for Monday Night Football.

Will start against Philadelphia
With Dak Prescott (hamstring) sidelined, coach Mike McCarthy announced Monday that Rush will start Week 10 against the Eagles next Sunday, David Moore of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: "We have great confidence in Cooper," McCarthy said. Rush has been Prescott's backup all season, but it was unclear if Dallas would start Rush or turn to Trey Lance. In relief of Prescott on Sunday against the Falcons, Rush completed 13 of 25 passes (52 percent) for 115 yards and one touchdown, averaging a minuscule 4.6 yards per attempt. Rush won't be a recommended fantasy starter outside of deeper two-quarterback formats.

Rush completed 13 of 25 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown after replacing Dak Prescott (hamstring) in Sunday's 27-21 loss to the Falcons. He also threw a two-point conversion and gained four yards on his only carry.
Analysis: Prescott left at the end of the third quarter, leaving Rush to try and mount a comeback from a 27-13 deficit. The Cowboys' No. 2 QB managed to produce points inside the final two minutes of the fourth quarter on his third and final drive, hitting Jalen Tolbert for a four-yard TD and then CeeDee Lamb for a two-point conversion, but Dallas couldn't recover the subsequent onside kick. Sees work in relief
Rush completed eight of 11 passes for 46 yards with an interception in Sunday's loss to the Lions.
Analysis: Dak Prescott got most of the fourth quarter off in a blowout loss, allowing Rush to see his most extensive action of the season so far. The 30-year-old continues to be active ahead of Trey Lance as the Cowboys' No. 2 QB, and Rush would presumably be the pick to move into the starting lineup should anything happen to Prescott.

Rush will open the season as the primary backup to Dak Prescott for the Cowboys.
Analysis: Trey Lance also made the 53-man roster, but his five-interception performance in the team's final preseason game ended any thought that he could bump Rush aside for the No. 2 job. Rush has been a reliable backup the last three seasons, seeing action in 21 games and completing 60.9 percent of his passes with a 6.9 YPA and an 8:5 TD:INT. Sees little action as backup
Rush completed 18 of 24 passes for 144 yards and an interception over seven regular-season games in 2023.
Analysis: While the Cowboys' penchant for early-season blowouts gave Rush plenty of garbage-time opportunities, the 30-year-old quarterback didn't get a start as Dak Prescott stayed healthy all year. Rush is under contract for one more season at a modest $2.25 million, and while his familiarity with the offense should ensure he returns to Dallas in 2024, he could face a challenge for the No. 2 role from Trey Lance.

Good to go Sunday
Rush (illness) is listed as active ahead of Sunday's playoff matchup against the Packers, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Rush was deemed questionable due to an ailment Friday after avoiding the Cowboys' injury reports Wednesday and Thursday. While the nature of this issue was never disclosed, the 30-year-old will once again be available as the team's backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott for Sunday's wild-card game. Rush has seen action in mop-up duty during seven games this season, completing 18 of 24 passes for 144 yards and one interception.

Rush (illness) is questionable for Sunday's game versus the Packers, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.

Sees action in blowout win
Rush completed both of his pass attempts for 20 yards in Sunday's 38-3 rout of the Patriots.
Analysis: He also lost two yards on three official carries, as he kneeled down on the Cowboys' final series. It's already the second time this season Rush has gotten some garbage-time snaps, as he also handled the final possession of a 40-0 blowout of the Giants in Week 1. Barring an injury to Dak Prescott, however, the 29-year-old backup QB won't see enough action to have fantasy value.

Efficient in preseason opener
Rush completed 10 of 12 passes for 83 yards in Saturday's 28-23 preseason loss to the Jaguars.
Analysis: The 29-year-old got the start at quarterback with Dak Prescott being held out of the Cowboys' preseason opener and was efficient on three drives, although none of them resulted in points for Dallas. Rush remains the favorite to serve as the No. 2 QB behind Prescott this season, but a big showing from Will Grier on Saturday has kept the competition alive for now.

Remains in Dallas
The Cowboys are re-signing Rush to a two-year contract Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Rush proved his worth as a backup last season by leading Dallas' offense to win four of his five early-season starts with Dak Prescott injured. Prescott is the Cowboys' clear starter, but after having proven his proficiency in the team's system, Rush could be worth rostering in deeper fantasy formats that start multiple quarterbacks.

Proves worth as backup
Rush completed 58.0 percent of his passes for 1,051 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions over nine games in 2022.
Analysis: The 29-year-old quarterback saw his most action yet in an NFL season, and Rush kept the Cowboys' year afloat by winning four of his five starts while Dak Prescott was sidelined with a thumb injury in September and October. Rush will be a free agent this offseason, while Will Grier is still under contract for another season, so it's possible Dallas doesn't bring him back in 2023. Quiet in Sunday's win
Rush completed 10 of 16 passes for 102 yards without a touchdown or interception in Sunday's 22-10 win over the Rams.

One possession later, Rush completed seven passes for 65 yards and connected with CeeDee Lamb for a one-yard score to give the Cowboys the lead. Analysis: Prescott's availability came down to a pregame warmup as he tends to a right calf strain suffered back in Week 6 at New England. Over the course of the workout, it became increasingly clear that Rush would be the starter, with Rush getting the initial throws and Prescott and Will Grier mixing in behind him, according to Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News. With Prescott officially inactive, Rush will earn his first NFL start. How Rush fares remains to be seen because he has just three…read more

Staying ready for potential start
Rush took all of the Cowboys' team reps in practice this week, and some within the organization believe he'll start Sunday against the Vikings with top quarterback Dak Prescott's (ankle) status "up in the air," Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Even after a Week 7 bye, Prescott -- who is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff -- doesn't appear to have made a full recovery from the strained calf he suffered on the final play of Dallas' overtime win over the Patriots in Week 6. While Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network note that Prescott is pushing to play and will go through his normal pregame warmup routine, the franchise signal-caller was only able to take part in walk-through activities and 7-on-7…read more

Wins No. 2 gig
Rush is one of two quarterbacks on the Cowboys' roster after the team cut Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci on Tuesday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The Cowboys could still tentatively pursue another veteran option, but for at least the time being, Rush looks slated to operate as the backup to Dak Prescott (shoulder). That said, the team did recently pass on the opportunity to acquire Gardner Minshew in exchange for a late-round draft pick, instead allowing the Eagles to do so, which may be an indication that Dallas isn't in the market for an alternative backup option.

Falls flat in preseason finale
Rush completed four of eight passes for 16 yards in Sunday's preseason loss to the Jaguars.
Analysis: The 27-year-old got the start in the preseason finale but had no success moving the ball, although he was working with the Cowboys' second-team offensive line and skill players against Jacksonville's first-team defense. Garrett Gilbert replaced Rush after three series and only did a little better against the Jags' second-teamers, leaving the backup situation behind Dak Prescott (shoulder) just as murky as it was coming into the game. There's still a strong chance Dallas will find a veteran QB…read more

Making push for backup job
Rush could be putting pressure on Garrett Gilbert for the No. 2 QB job behind Dak Prescott (shoulder), Rob Phillips of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Analysis: Rush was by far the most effective signal-caller for the Cowboys on Saturday night, completing 10 of 12 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Gilbert, who got the start, completed three of five passes for 30 yards and lost a fumble, and Ben DiNucci was picked off three times by the Texans' second and third-string defenders in the second half. Any camp battle could wind up moot if the team brings in a more established veteran after rosters get cut down across the league, but based…read more

Looks healthy Friday
Rush completed seven of 13 passes for 89 yards in Friday's preseason loss to the Cardinals. He didn't throw a touchdown pass or an interception.
Analysis: The 27-year-old picked up a minor shoulder injury last week, but Rush didn't seem bothered by it in Arizona. He was once again the second QB in the game after Garrett Gilbert, but Rush hasn't done much in exhibition action so far to put pressure on Gilbert for the No. 2 role during the regular season behind Dak Prescott (shoulder).

Picks up shoulder injury
Rush missed Saturday's joint practice with the Rams due to a shoulder injury, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: With Dak Prescott (shoulder) not in attendance for Thursday's Hall of Fame Game, Rush was the second Cowboys quarterback on the field after backup Garrett Gilbert and ahead of fellow reserve Ben DiNucci. Rush completed eight of 13 passes for 70 yards, but he apparently came out the other side with a health concern. He'll aim to get healthy for the team's next preseason game Friday in Arizona.

Returns to practice
Rush (back) is present at Tuesday's practice, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Rush missed two days of practice due to a back injury, but he's already gotten healthy enough to get back on the field. The 27-year-old veteran is competing with Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci for reserve work behind Dak Prescott (ankle).

Dealing with back spasms
Rush didn't participate at Sunday's practice due to back spasms, Rob Phillips of the Cowboys' official site reports.
Analysis: Rush had the injury crop up Saturday and now has missed two straight practices due to the issue. The 27-year-old has less than two weeks to get healthy before the Hall of Fame Game versus Pittsburgh on Aug. 5.

Secures pact with Dallas
Rush signed a reserve/future contract with the Cowboys on Monday, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The quarterback first joined Dallas back in 2017 as an undrafted free agent and has bounced back and forth between the practice squad and active roster since that point.

Demoted to practice squad
Rush reverted to the Cowboys' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
Analysis: Rush was active as a backup option to Garrett Gilbert for Sunday's home game against the Steelers, but he was not needed in a surprisingly close contest that ultimately saw Pittsburgh prevail 24-19. Ben DiNucci was a healthy scratch for Week 9, meaning that if Andy Dalton (concussion/illness) can't gain medical clearance by the time Dallas next plays Nov. 22 against Minnesota, Rush may be called up once again.

Likely not starting Week 9
Rush is not expected to start Sunday's game against the Steelers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: It appears as if Garrett Gilbert will take over as the Cowboys' starting quarterback Sunday in lieu of Rush, who is expected to be called up to the active roster sometime this weekend. Given Ben DiNucci's struggles in the same role last week, it'll be interesting to see whether Rush or DiNucci acts as the backup in what figures to be a tough matchup against the Steelers' defense.

Being considered for Week 9 start
The Cowboys are considering going with Rush as their starting quarterback Sunday against the Steelers after Andy Dalton (concussion) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: There was optimism Dalton would get through the concussion protocol in time for Sunday's game, only for the veteran to contract COVID-19. Ben DiNucci got the first opportunity to replace Dalton this past Sunday at Philadelphia, leading the Cowboys to a 23-9 loss while completing 21 of 40 passes for 180 yards, getting sacked four times, losing two fumbles and gaining 22 yards on five carries. The ugly performance seems to be swaying coach Mike McCarthy to consider other options, namely Rush, who…read more

Getting look from Houston
Rush will participate in a workout with the Texans, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: The 26-year-old quarterback most recently suited up as a member of the Giants' practice squad, but he apparently did not show enough for offensive coordinator Jason Garrett to consider him indispensable. Houston is taking a look at its developmental quarterback options, with the team currently having Bill O'Brien-era holdover AJ McCarron playing on a $4 million deal as the No. 2 QB.

Drops from practice squad
The Giants cut Rush from the practice squad Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Rush followed Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett from Dallas to the Big Apple, but after three weeks, the QB was let go in favor of Clayton Thorson. Rush will seek a new practice squad role elsewhere.

Inks practice squad contract
The Giants signed Rush to their practice squad Sunday, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.

Shifts to waivers
The Giants waived Rush on Saturday, Michael Eisen of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett was Rush's head coach in Dallas last year, but Rush couldn't beat out Colt McCoy to be Daniel Jones' backup in 2020. Rush may stick around on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Scooped up by Giants
The Giants claimed Rush off waivers from the Cowboys on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Rush will reunite with former Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, who accepted a position with the Giants as an offensive coordinator after being dismissed by Dallas in January. The 26-year-old Rush will likely battle with veterans Colt McCoy and Alex Tanney for the one or two backup spots available behind second-year starter Daniel Jones.

Done in Dallas
Rush was waived by the Cowboys on Monday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Dallas' decision to cut Rush comes following the news that Andy Dalton has officially signed with the team as Dak Prescott's backup. The selection of developmental project Ben DiNucci in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft also accounts for the team's No. 3 spot, making Rush the odd man out in Dallas' quarterback room. The 26-year-old only attempted three regular-season passes in three years after joining the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan in 2017, and he'll now…read more

Roster spot in jeopardy
Rush could see his Cowboys tenure come to an end after the team signed Andy Dalton to be Dak Prescott's backup Saturday.
Analysis: An undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan in 2017, Rush has held down the No. 2 QB spot behind Prescott but has only attempted three regular-season passes in three years. With a solid veteran in Dalton now on hand, and 2020 seventh-round pick Ben DiNucci available as a developmental option for new coach Mike McCarthy if the club wants to carry a third quarterback on the gameday roster, there would appear to be no room for Rush as well.

Signs RFA tender
Rush signed a one-year, $2.1 million contract with the Cowboys on Wednesday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The Cowboys locked Rush up for 2020 via a restricted free agent tender, putting him on track to return as the team's No. 2 option behind Dak Prescott. The Cowboys could still bring in competition for the backup gig during the offseason, and it's worth noting that second-year man Clayton Thorson will be retained for at least another year after having signed a reserve/futures contract.

Gets RFA tender
The Cowboys gave Rush a restricted free agent tender, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The 26-year-old backup quarterback has played 26 offensive snaps in three seasons with Dallas, last throwing a pass in a regular-season game in 2017. Rush was shaky during preseason play the past two years, so it won't come as any surprise if the Cowboys bring in competition for the No. 2 QB job. To that effect, Clayton Thorson spent most of 2019 on the team's practice squad and then signed a reserve/futures contract at the end of the season.
