Plays in blowout loss
Mills completed seven of 12 passes for 79 yards in Sunday's 34-7 loss to the Vikings in Week 3.
Analysis: Mills replaced C.J. Stroud late in the fourth quarter of the blowout loss. It was his first action of the season.

Gets one-year extension
Mills and the Texans agreed Wednesday on a one-year, $5 million extension, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Mills is entering the final season of his four-year rookie contract, so the extension will keep him in the fold through the 2025 campaign. Rapoport adds that the contract contains incentives based on playing time, but the Texans are hopeful that Mills won't be needed for much more than spot duty if franchise quarterback C.J. Stroud can maintain health. Over 34 career regular-season contests, Mills went 5-19-1 as a starter and has completed 573 of 912 attempts (62.8 percent) for 5,955 yards, 35…read more

Returns to practice
Mills (ribs) returned to practice Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Mills missed last Saturday's preseason game against the Giants with bruised ribs sustained during a preseason tilt the previous week against the Steelers. He looked sharp, per Wilson, delivering touchdown passes to John Metchie and Xavier Hutchinson. It's unclear if Mills will suit up for Saturday's preseason finale against the Rams. One thing that's certain is a healthy Mills will enter the regular season as the backup to C.J. Stroud.

Bothered by ribs
Mills is dealing with an injury to his ribs and may not play in Saturday's preseason game against the Giants, Aaron Wilson of SportsTalk 790 reports.
Analysis: Mills reportedly missed practice Thursday and was limited throughout the week. An absence Saturday would free up more snaps for Case Keenum and Tim Boyle once C.J. Stroud is removed from the game.

Logs most QB snaps
Mills completed eight of 13 attempts for 89 yards and was sacked twice in Friday's 20-12 preseason win over Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Mills, who entered after starter C.J. Stroud played the first two series, was in the game for the most snaps of the four quarterbacks that saw action. He's locked in as the backup quarterback, although that was the case in 2023 when the Texans used Case Keenum to start games late in the season with Stroud unavailable.

Sharp in preseason debut
Mills started the Texans' 21-17 preseason loss to the Bears on Thursday and completed 10 of 13 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown while also netting no gain on two carries.
Analysis: Mills, who's entering the final year of his rookie contract and is battling veteran Case Keenum for the No. 2 job this summer, made a strong opening case for his candidacy Thursday. The 2021 third-round pick completed a six-yard pass to Xavier Hutchinson on the first play from scrimmage and went on to cap off the game-opening 13-play, 74-yard march with a nine-yard touchdown toss to tight end Teagan Quitoriano. Enters final year of contract
Mills has one year remaining on his rookie contract entering the 2024 offseason. He completed 18 of 39 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns over six regular-season games in 2023.
Analysis: Mills operated as the primary backup when C.J. Stroud was healthy and starting, but when the No. 1 quarterback couldn't go in Weeks 15 and 16 due to a concussion, the Texans used Case Keenum as their starter. Both backup QBs are under contract for 2024, although Keenum's cap hit would be minimal if he were to be released.

Needed in relief against Cleveland
Mills completed 15 of 32 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 36-22 loss to the Browns. He also completed a two-point conversion.
Analysis: Case Keenum got the start for the Texans, but Mills was seeing snaps in the first quarter on certain packages, and when the team fell behind 36-7 after Keenum's second interception of the day, Mills worked the entire fourth quarter and produced a couple of scoring drives while working against Cleveland's backup defenders. Analysis: Mills entered the game to throw a Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half but was unable to avoid a sack. He had been the replacement when C.J. Stroud (concussion) got hurt in Week 14 but was bypassed as Sunday's starter in favor of Case Keenum.

Bypassed for starting nod
Mills is slated to remain the Texans' No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Titans while Case Keenum draws the start in place of C.J. Stroud (concussion), who has been ruled out for the Week 15 contest, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Stroud wasn't able to practice in any fashion this week and has yet to clear the five-step protocol after sustaining the concussion in the Texans' 30-6 loss to the Jets last Sunday. Though Mills has served as the top backup to Stroud all season and completed one of five pass attempts for four yards in relief of the rookie signal-caller late in last week's loss, the Texans had him and the 35-year-old Keenum split reps in practice throughout Week 15 prep. Mills is expected to remain the Texans' No. 2 quarterback for Sunday's game againt the Titans with Case Keenum in line to draw the Week 15 start in place of C.J. Stroud (concussion), Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Stroud is listed as doubtful after sustaining a concussion late in last weekend's 30-6 loss to the Jets. Mills -- who has dressed as the Texans' No. 2 quarterback all season -- came on in relief of Stroud and completed one of five passes for four yards, but Mills will apparently be bypassed for the starting nod in favor of the 35-year-old Keenum. Could start with Stroud in protocol
Mills completed one of five passes for four yards after replacing C.J. Stroud (concussion) in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 30-6 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed after the game that Stroud has entered the NFL's concussion protocol, so Mills would get an opportunity to make his first start of 2023 in Week 15 against the Titans if Stroud fails to gain clearance. Mills made 26 starts over the previous two seasons and has a career 33:25 TD:INT. Wide receiver Nico Collins (calf) also exited the loss to the Jets after the Texans lost Tank Dell (lower leg) for the season in the previous game.

Analysis: Starting quarterback C.J. Stroud was ordered to the sidelines for evaluation following a quarterback sneak during the fourth quarter. Slated to back up Stroud
Coach DeMeco Ryans named C.J. Stroud the Texans' starting QB on Sunday, per Deepi Sidhu of the team's official site. As a result, Mills is slated to open the coming season as Houston's No. 2 signal-caller.
Analysis: Though Stroud and Mills began training camp splitting first-team reps, Stroud (the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft) subsequently took them over, setting the stage for Sunday's announcement. Since entering the league as a third-rounder in 2021, Mills has logged 26 regular-season starts, including 15 last year, but he'll now move into a backup role behind the franchise's high-profile rookie QB.

Mixed results behind Stroud
Mills completed nine of 12 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown but lost a fumble in Thursday night's 20-9 win over the Patriots in the Texans' preseason opener.
Analysis: Mills entered the game after rookie first-rounder C.J. Stroud played Houston's first two drives. The latter finished with just two completions for 13 yards and an interception. Although Mills moved the ball better in his four series under center, including a six-yard touchdown toss to end the first half, he too committed a turnover during his time on the field. Loses first-team reps
Mills did not operate with the first-team offense during 11-on11 drills for a second consecutive practice Saturday, Deepi SIdhu of the Texans' official site reports.
Analysis: Mills and C.J. Stroud have been splitting reps the first week of camp, but the pattern changed Friday. That's when Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans told Sidhu that Stroud has developed since the beginning of camp. "With C.J., what I've seen is he's definitely made adjustments," the coach said. Mills will get his opportunities during Thursday's preseason opener against the Patriots, but recent events indicate Stroud has the edge in the quarterback competition.

"We'll see where their process goes in training camp and see as the competition continues," Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday. "We'll see who separates themselves."
Analysis: Mills and Stroud, who was selected with the second overall pick in this year's draft, have rotated reps with the first-team offense throughout OTAs and minicamp. The Texans view Stroud as the franchise quarterback they've missed since the controversial exit of Deshaun Watson, who was traded to Cleveland last year. Not on trade block
The Texans aren't interested in trading Mills, who was the first quarterback through drills Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: It's a crowded QB room with Mills (26 career starts) joined by 35-year-old Case Keenum (64 starts) and 2023 second overall pick C.J. Stroud. It's worth noting that the rookie was second through drills (ahead of Keenum) at the first day of OTAs. There's little question Stroud will take snaps this year, but it is possible new coach DeMeco Ryans gives Mills a chance to keep his starting job for at least the early portion of the season.

May be on outs as starter
Mills will remain on the roster after the Texans selected C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on Thursday, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: In theory, either Mills or Case Keenum, who was added during the offseason, could start Week 1, but neither is viewed as a long-term answer at the position. The temptation to make Stroud the Week 1 starter will be great, but so will the patience to make sure the Ohio State product is ready. Mills completed 22 of 38 passes for 298 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in the Texans' 32-31 win over the Colts on Sunday. He also rushed once for six yards and threw a game-winning two-point conversion pass.
Analysis: Mills saved his best for last, putting together his first three-touchdown tally of the campaign while falling just short of his third 300-yard effort of 2022. The second-year signal-caller even led Houston on an improbable comeback that culminated in a heave of a 28-yard touchdown toss to Jordan Akins on fourth down and a subsequent two-pointer to the veteran tight end that served as the difference in the game. Struggles badly again
Mills completed 22 of 40 passes for 202 yards against Jacksonville on Sunday.
Analysis: It's been a brutal season for Mills, who once again rotated with Jeff Driskel (3 of 4 passing for nine yards, two carries for seven yards). When he took the snaps, Mills just couldn't get the ball downfield. Throws late touchdown for win
Mills completed 17 of 28 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Saturday's 19-14 win over the Texans. He added four rushes for eight yards.
Analysis: Mills had very little production for the majority of the game, but he led two scoring drives late in the contest during which he accounted for 103 of his yards. That culminated with a six-yard, game-winning touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks with only three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Mills completed 12 of 24 passes for 121 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and rushed five times for 25 yards and another score in the Texans' 30-24 overtime loss to the Chiefs on Sunday. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Mills was far from efficient, but his surprising three-touchdown tally was certainly a boon for those who may have rolled with the second-year signal-caller in large-field DFS contests or as a desperation play on their season-long teams. Expected to be part of two-QB setup
Mills is slated to start Sunday's game against the Chiefs, but he's expected to cede snaps to backup Jeff Driskel while the Texans implement a two-quarterback system, league sources tell Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com.
Analysis: In his return from a two-game benching last weekend in Dallas, Mills surprisingly helped keep the 1-11-1 Texans competitive in a 27-23 loss to one of the NFC's top teams. However, Mills wasn't used as a traditional starter in his return, as he played exactly half of the snaps and finished with 16 completions on 21 attempts for 175 yards and an interception in the loss. Manages game in loss to Dallas
Mills completed 16 of 21 pass attempts for 175 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 27-23 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: Mills returned as Houston's starting quarterback after being benched for the last two games. He accounted for the majority of the team's pass attempts but did give way to Jeff Driskel on several occasions -- including for its lone passing touchdown of the game. The Texans plan to return Mills to the starting quarterback role for Sunday's game at Dallas, league sources tell Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston.
Analysis: Mills started the Texans' first 10 games before being benched in favor of Kyle Allen ahead of Week 12 after completing 61.9 percent of his throws for 6.5 yards per attempt and an 11:11 TD:INT. Allen didn't fare any better in double-digit losses to the Dolphins and Browns the past two weeks (59 percent completion rate, 5.3 YPA, 2:4 TD:INT), so the Texans will turn the offense back over to Mills with the hope that he can provide some sort of lift. Officially benched
Head coach Lovie Smith confirmed Friday that Mills will move to the bench while Kyle Allen takes over as the Texans' starting quarterback for Sunday's game in Miami, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
Analysis: As anticipated, Mills has lost his starting job while the Texans are in the midst of a five-game losing streak. The second-year quarterback's play has deteriorated lately, as he threw a costly pick-six in Houston's Week 11 loss to the Commanders and reached 170 yards only once in the last four games. Even if Mills gets the job back from Allen at some point, Houston will almost certainly draft a new starting quarterback after the season, marking the end of Mills' tenure atop the depth chart.

Analysis: According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, head coach Lovie Smith declined to name a starting quarterback during his Wednesday news conference, but all signs point to Allen is drawing the assignment Sunday against the Dolphins. Like all changes, anything that we do from week to week, we've got to talk to the players before we talk to you," Smith said.
Analysis: The coach faced questions about Mills after Sunday's loss to the Commanders, just like he did following a Week 10 loss to the Giants. Smith wasn't ready to comment immediately following Sunday's game, but his words Monday implied Kyle Allen could take over under center. "Kyle can make all of the throws," Smith said. Mills completed 19 of 33 passes for 169 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions while adding five carries for 10 yards and another score in the Texans' 23-10 loss to the Commanders on Sunday.
Analysis: Mills once again struggled to get anything going through the air, throwing a pick-six on the Texans' second offensive play and then helming five first-half drives that ended in punts. The second-year signal-caller was a tad more productive in the second half after Houston was already down multiple possessions and finally got the team into the end zone himself with a four-yard touchdown run with 3:19 remaining. Won't get benched for now
Houston head coach Lovie Smith said after Sunday's 24-16 loss to the Giants that he has no immediate plans to remove Mills from the starting role, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports. "I just don't think it's time," Smith said, when asked if he was considering a change at quarterback. "Simple as that. Quarterback position's a little bit different."
Analysis: Mills threw for a respectable 319 yards in the Week 10 loss, but he's shown signs of regression in 2022 and his job security has been thrown into question as a result. Through nine games, Mills has a lower completion rate than he did as a rookie (62.3 percent versus 66.8 percent) and is fielding a worse passer rating (81.7 versus 88.8). Analysis: Coming on the heels of his first 300-yard performance last week, Mills barely reached half that total, though he salvaged his performance a little with a three-yard TD toss to Dameon Pierce with 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Analysis: Mills' lackluster numbers tell the tale of a typically difficult encounter with the Broncos defense on its home field, but to his credit, the second-year signal-caller helped keep Houston in the game until the waning seconds. Solid effort in Week 1 tie
Mills completed 23 of 37 passes for 240 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Texans' 20-20 overtime tie with the Colts on Sunday. He also rushed twice for minus-1 yard and lost a fumble.
Analysis: Mills nearly turned in a mistake-free effort and was key in the Texans outperforming expectations to open the season. The second-year signal-caller once again relied the most on trusted veteran Brandin Cooks, but both of his touchdown passes went to recent addition O.J. Howard on throws of 16 and 22 yards in the second and third quarters, respectively. Plays into second half Thursday
Mills completed six of 10 passes for 58 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Thursday's 17-0 preseason win over the 49ers.
Analysis: You wouldn't know it from his modest stat line, but Mills actually played the entire first half and the first drive of the second half for Houston, capping his final possession of the game with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Chris Moore. The Texans did most of their damage on the ground, which is something the team failed to find success at during Mills' rookie season. If rookie running back Dameon Pierce -- who capped Houston's opening drive with a one-yard touchdown -- can breathe life into the…read more

Expected to play in preseason finale
With coach Lovie Smith planning to use Thursday's preseason finale against the 49ers as something of a dress rehearsal, per Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com, Mills could see extensive action in the contest.
Analysis: Once the Texans' starting QB gets his work in Thursday, Kyle Allen and Jeff Driskel will be available to close out the game for the team. Mills then will pivot to preparing for Houston's season opener against the Colts, with Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins in line to serve as his top two WR options and the squad's backfield in line to feature the trio of Dameon Pierce, Marlon Mack and Rex Burkhead.

Plays first half Friday
Mills completed 10 of 17 passes for 96 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Texans' 24-20 preseason win over the Rams on Friday night. He also committed a fumble recovered by Houston.
Analysis: The second-year signal-caller started and played the entire first half, connecting with Nico Collins on an 18-yard touchdown pass with one second before halftime for Houston's only points over the first two quarters. While Mills didn't turn the ball over, his performance was far from remarkable, but there's no immediate threat to his chances of opening the season as the starter. More snaps coming Friday
Mills is expected to see an increase in playing time Friday against the Rams after playing two series in the preseason opener last week, Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site reports. "We wanted to give him limited work, just getting him out there on the football field was what we were looking for," Houston head coach Lovie Smith said.
Analysis: Mills and the first-team offense floundered last week, going three-and-out on two drives. It should be noted that Houston didn't have three of its projected starting five on the offensive line. More personnel -- on the offensive line and at wide receiver -- are expected to play Friday.

Plays two series Saturday
Mills completed all three of his pass attempts for 14 total yards in Saturday's 17-13 preseason win over the Saints.
Analysis: Mills failed to guide the Texans' first-team offense to a single first down throughout his only two series at the helm Saturday, but he also was without his No. 1 wide receiver in Brandin Cooks. Mills figures to see a bit more playing time in the team's second preseason contest against the Rams on Friday.

In line for some drives Saturday
Mills is slated to play the first few possession of Saturday's preseason contest versus the Saints, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Mills is unlikely to have Brandin Cooks and Rex Burkhead at his disposal in the Texans' exhibition opener, but he should get some work in with running backs Marlon Mack and Dameon Pierce and wide receivers Nico Collins and Chris Conley, among others. Behind Mills, Kyle Allen is unavailable after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, leaving all remaining quarterback reps to Jeff Driskel on Saturday.

On pace to play Saturday
Coach Lovie Smith said Mills is in line to play in Saturday's preseason contest against the Saints, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
Analysis: Prior to this statement, Smith also noted backup quarterback Kyle Allen won't play Saturday due to personal reasons, leaving Mills and Jeff Driskel as the only Texans available at the position this weekend. Smith didn't mention how much action Mills can expect to see, but it's safe to say the breakdown of snaps and possessions likely will tilt in Driskel's favor, so as not to risk Mills' health.

Improving weaknesses
Mills studied his throw chart from his rookie season and has worked on improving his weaker areas, Mark Lane of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Mills played his best football down the stretch last season, going 2-3 with a 9:2 TD:INT in his final five starts after an 0-6 start to his career. He's looking to build on his promising finish by eliminating his weaknesses, and Mills hopes he'll be able to make every throw asked of him after addressing his weak spots.

Seems to have coach's confidence
Texans coach Lovie Smith said Monday that Mills is the team's quarterback, while offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton used the term "potentially our starting quarterback," Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: The 2021 third-round pick won just two of 11 starts last season, but both came in the final five weeks -- a stretch where he completed 68.4 percent of his passes for 7.4 YPA with nine touchdowns and only two interceptions. While he may have done enough to earn his shot as the Week 1 starter, Mills doesn't offer much fantasy upside for single-QB leagues, as he rarely runs (18 carries for 44 yards last year) and is stuck on one of the worst rosters in the NFL. Leads comeback effort
Mills completed 23 of his 33 passes for 301 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 28-25 loss to the Titans.
Analysis: Mills led a vaillant comeback attempt, bringing the Texans back from down 21-0 to ultimately lose by only a field goal. He connected with five different pass catchers for gains of at least 20 yards-- two of which went for touchdowns. While Deshaun Watson's future with the team remains unclear, Mills has made the case to remain the starter in 2022 with the opportunity to prove himself as the long-term quarterback in Houston. Little production in losing effort
Mills completed 21 of 32 pass attempts for 163 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 23-7 loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: Mills maintained his recent string of accuracy, finishing with a completion rate above 60 percent for the fourth straight game. The rookie quarterback wasn't able to take many shots downfield, as the Texans' inconsistent offensive line struggled to contain the 49ers' pass rush. The 167 total yards (four rushing yards) were the signal caller's lowest yardage output since Week 7. Another strong performance
Mills completed 21 of 27 passes for 254 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 41-29 win over the Chargers.
Analysis: Mills continued to show signs of being a capable quarterback in the NFL, tallying lengthy touchdown passes of 41 and 13 yards. He was aided by a strong rushing offense and defensive performance from the Texans, though he also showed the ability to push the ball down the field effectively by completing four passes of more than 20 yards. Solid showing in win
Mills completed 19 of 30 passes for 209 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the Texans' 30-16 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. He also rushed once for two yards.
Analysis: The rookie signal-caller didn't put up anywhere as pretty a stat line as in the Week 14 loss to the Seahawks, but Mills was more than serviceable on the road against a division opponent. Mills connected with favorite target Brandin Cooks for both of his touchdown tosses, with the speedster doing almost all the work on the second, a 43-yarder in the fourth quarter. Hot start not enough versus Seattle
Mills completed 33 of 49 passes for 331 yards and a touchdown while adding eight yards on two rushing attempts in Sunday's 33-13 loss to the Seahawks.
Analysis: Mills hit his first 14 passes for 150 yards, including a five-yard touchdown to Brevin Jordan to cap the opening drive. He cooled down after Brandin Cooks was tackled just short of the goal line, missing the next two throws as the Texans had to settle for a game-tying field goal. Coach David Culley named Mills the Texans' starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Seahawks and the rest of the season, Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site reports.
Analysis: The 23-year-old filled in as the starter while Tyrod Taylor was sidelined by injury earlier in the campaign, and the third-round rookie now will be atop the depth chart for the final five games of the season. Mills doesn't offer much fantasy upside, as he's completed 65 percent of his passes on 223 attempts for 1,406 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight contests.

Likely to start Sunday, maybe beyond
Mills is expected to start Sunday's game against the Seahawks and may be the Texans' top quarterback for the remainder of the season, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.
Analysis: Tyrod Taylor (wrist) took part in Wednesday's practice, but he may move into the backup role even if he's medically cleared for Sunday. Since returning from a stint on injured reserve Week 9, the veteran has performed no better than Mills, who tossed six touchdowns and seven interceptions in his six starts Weeks 3 through 8, averaging a meager 209.2 passing yards per contest.

Replaces injured Taylor
Mills completed six of 14 passes for 49 yards in Sunday's 31-0 loss to the Colts.
Analysis: Mills replaced teammate Tyrod Taylor late in the third quarter after he injured his wrist. Although coach David Culley said after the game that Taylor could have returned, he also noted concern over Taylor's ability to grip the ball, ultimately allowing Mills to finish the contest. In his relief role, Mills struggled to get anything going, but his numbers were rather similar to Taylor's prior to exiting. Mills' teammate, Tyrod Taylor (hamstring), is in line to start Sunday's game against the Dolphins, The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Mills had been handling the team's QB duties since Taylor was injured Week 2, and since then he's passed for 1,357 yards, with seven TDs and eight picks. The 2021 third-rounder will revert to a backup role now that Taylor is in line to come off IR, while Jeff Driskel will serve as the team's No. 3 signal-caller. Three hundred-yard mark
Mills completed 29 of 38 pass attempts for 310 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Rams on Sunday.
Analysis: It wasn't the cleanest game for Mills -- a lot of his production could be described as the 'garbage time' sort and he withstood a lot of pressure (five sacks, nine quarterback hits), but he deserves credit for keeping his composure through the struggles and fighting for gains late in the game. Mills was named the Texans' starting quarterback for Sunday's game versus the Rams, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) is back at practice this week and is closing in on his return from injured reserve, but he's not quite ready to be activated. The rookie third-round pick has completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,047 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions while also losing one fumble.

Shut down by Cardinals
Mills completed 23 of 32 passes for 135 yards in Sunday's 31-5 loss to the Cardinals.
Analysis: While the rookie quarterback managed a decent completion percentage, his 4.2 yards per attempt provided a better indication of how little success Mills had moving the Texans' offense. He's now failed to reach 200 passing yards in three of his five starts, managing only a 5:7 TD:INT during that stretch, and with Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) ready to begin practicing again, Mills' stint as Houston's starter could end as soon as Week 8 against the Rams.

Struggles in blowout loss
Mills completed 29 of 43 passes for 243 yards and two interceptions in Sunday's 31-3 loss to the Colts. He added five yards on two rushing attempts.
Analysis: After topping the 300-yard mark through the air last week, Mills regressed closer to the subpar results he showed in his first three appearances, failing to lead Houston into the end zone in the blowout loss. Once Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) is ready to return, the rookie third-round pick will be relegated back to a bench role. That could happen as soon as Week 7 against the Cardinals.

Analysis: Mills combined to throw for 357 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions across his first three professional starts. However, he delivered an impressive performance against the Patriots by both taking care of the ball and taking shots deep down the field. Four picks against Bills
Mills completed 11 of 21 passes for 87 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions in Sunday's Week 4 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: There were reports prior to the matchup that the Texans planned to open the offense up for Mills. That didn't go according to plan, as Mills threw a pair of interceptions in both the first and second half. He also averaged only 4.1 yards per attempt, and his longest completion of the day went for 16 yards. The Texans plan to open up the offense for Mills in his second start Sunday against the Bills, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Mills made his first NFL start Week 3 against the Panthers on just three days' preparation. As such, the coaching staff placed limitations on the rookie quarterback. Houston head coach David Culley believes the staff went too far in trying to protect Mills, who threw for 168 yards and a touchdown without turning the ball over. Holds his own in Week 3 loss
Mills completed 19 of 28 passes for 168 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Texans' 24-9 loss to the Panthers on Thursday night. He also rushed once for no gain and recovered a fumble.
Analysis: Making his first NFL start on a short week against a defense that was ranked No. 1 on a yards-per-game basis against both the run and pass, Mills turned in an admirable albeit pedestrian fantasy performance. That leaves Mills, a rookie third-round pick, in line for a multi-game run atop the depth chart. On track to fill in for Taylor
With Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) expected to miss time, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Mills is in line to start Thursday night's game against the Panthers.
Analysis: Though Taylor's looming absence has not yet been officially confirmed by the Texans, the veteran QB isn't expected to play Thursday, at a minimum, and an IR stint could be in the cards for him. As a result, with Deshaun Watson not being considered as an option to replace Taylor, Mills is in line to start versus Carolina, while Jeff Driskel is a candidate to be elevated from the practice squad to Houston's active roster to serve as the team's backup signal-caller Week 3.

Struggles in first taste of action
Mills came into Sunday's 31-21 loss to the Browns for Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) and completed eight of 18 passes for 102 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also netted minus-1 yard on two carries and committed a fumble that was recovered by Houston.
Analysis: Mills unsurprisingly had his share of struggles upon unexpectedly having to enter the contest, but he was able to redeem himself to an extent with a two-yard touchdown toss to Brandin Cooks in the fourth quarter. The rookie third-round pick could be called on to start Thursday night's Week 3 matchup against the Panthers given the quick turnaround and the notoriously tricky nature of the the type of soft-tissue injury that prompted Taylor's early exit Sunday.

Uneven against Tampa Bay
Mills completed 10 of 27 passes for 106 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in Saturday's 23-16 loss to Tampa Bay in preseason Week 3.
Analysis: Mills' two-TD/three-pick night was part of a strange game in which Houston rushed for more than 200 yards, forced three turnovers and still lost. The rookie quarterback's uneven effort is emblematic of his entire preseason: some good, some bad and not enough to be a starter come Week 1 of the regular season. Mills did engineer a couple of scoring drives before giving way to Jeff Driskel early in the third quarter, which established the quarterback pecking order entering the regular season. Analysis: Mills began Thursday's session with a sack to begin a drive, then ended it with interception. It should not shock followers that a mid-round quarterback is making ugly plays in camp, but the important thing is if Mills can learn from his mistakes. Mills spent time with the first-team offense Saturday, as Tyrod Taylor (personal) was not at practice, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: It was a red-zone day for the Texans, and Mills started well, throwing touchdown strikes to Jordan Akins and Chris Conley. Later, however, he was picked off twice by safety Justin Reid. Overall, the rookie threw five interceptions, per Aaron Reiss of The Athletic. Houston head coach David Culley took a big-picture view, noting it was a good learning experience for Mills, the 2021 third-round draft pick that is expected to back up Taylor and possibly Jeff Driskel.
