Let go by Atlanta
The Falcons released Washington on Sunday.
Analysis: Washington was let go as part of a corresponding move to make space for recently acquired safety Justin Simmons on the Falcons' 90-man offseason roster. The 28-year-old wideout last played with the Cowboys during the 2022 season, when he appeared in just two games after fracturing his foot during training camp. Washington bounced around a few teams last offseason, but he went unsigned throughout the 2023 campaign and joined the Falcons on July 29, He'll now look for an comeback opportunity…read more

Set to join Falcons
The Falcons are slated to sign Washington, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Washington last saw NFL regular-season action with the Cowboys in 2022, but the 2018 second-rounder did manage to record 114 catches for 1,629 yards and 11 TDs over four years with the Steelers (2018-21). With the Falcons, the 28-year-old will compete for depth slotting in a wideout corps currently led by Drake London and Darnell Mooney that also includes Ray-Ray McCloud, Rondale Moore and KhaDarel Hodge.

Can't stick with Indianapolis
The Colts are set to release Washington on Monday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Washington, a 2018 second-round pick, joined Indianapolis less than two weeks ago and will now have to look for yet another opportunity. The 27-year-old wideout failed to secure his only target across two games with the Cowboys last season.

Joins Indy WR corps
The Colts signed Washington on Friday.
Analysis: With Ashton Dulin (knee) having been placed on IR by the Colts, Washington gives the team some added pass-catching depth ahead of Week 1. For now, the 27-year-old figures to compete for slotting in a wideout corps that is currently led by Michael Pittman, Alec Pierce, Isaiah McKenzie and Josh Downs. Washington did not record a catch in two games with the Cowboys last season.

Gets let go
Washington was released by the Saints on Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Washington linked up with New Orleans in May, but he was unable to make enough of an impact to remain in contention for a roster spot. The 27-year-old has yet to match his second pro season, where he garnered a reputation as a downfield threat and averaged 16.7 yards-per-catch on 44 receptions for 735 yards. He'll now work to find a new opportunity.

Gets opportunity with Giants
The Giants signed Washington to their practice squad Wednesday, Dan Salomone of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Once he made a recovery from the fractured right foot he suffered in training camp, Washington struggled to carve out playing time in a crowded Dallas receiver room. Upon being cleared for his Cowboys debut in Week 14, Washington went on to play just 14 snaps over his two games with Dallas before being waived last week. On way out of Dallas
The Cowboys informed Washington on Wednesday that he'll be waived, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: After joining Dallas on a one-year deal last March, Washington appeared to be in good shape to open the season in a top-three role at receiver while Michael Gallup worked his back from an ACL tear, but a fractured right foot suffered early in training camp prevented that from materializing. Following a lengthy recovery from surgery, Washington was cleared to make his season debut in Week 14, but he ended up playing just 14 snaps between his first two games with Dallas before sitting out the…read more

Washington (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Titans, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Healthy scratch Week 16
Washington (coach's decision) has been ruled inactive ahead of Saturday's matchup against the Eagles, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Washington sat out the first 12 games of the season while recovering from a foot injury, and the 26-year-old has logged just one target while playing 14 offensive snaps since returning to action Week 14. With Washington sidelined, T.Y. Hilton appears set to serve as the Cowboys' No. 4 wideout while making his season debut Saturday.

Invisible in Dallas debut
Washington failed to catch his only target and saw 11 offensive snaps in Sunday's win over the Texans.
Analysis: Seeing his first action of the season after recovering from a foot injury, Washington's workload was limited, but he got a rude welcome to the Cowboys offense, getting the ball jarred loose on a big hit by Houston safety Jalen Pitre the only time Dak Prescott looked his way. With Noah Brown having earned Prescott's trust earlier in the year and coming off a big performance Sunday, Washington could have a hard time climbing above the No. 4 spot on the WR depth chart down the stretch.

Set to play Sunday
Washington (foot) was activated off injured reserve Saturday and will play Sunday against the Giants, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Washington has not played this season after fracturing his foot during the preseason, but the long-time Steeler is gearing up to make his 2022 season debut in a pivotal divisional matchup against the Giants. Given the Cowboys' starting trio of wideouts -- CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup and Noah Brown -- are all healthy, it's hard to project many opportunities for Washington to carve out a consistent role. Expect the 26-year-old to be a quality depth piece for a team that has Super Bowl aspirations.

Expected to play in Week 14
Washington (foot) appears likely to be reinstated from injured reserve ahead of Sunday's game against the Texans, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy said Friday that he thinks that Washington is ready to make his season debut based on what he saw out of the wide receiver at practices Wednesday and Thursday. Washington fractured his right foot in a training camp workout in August and has been sidelined all season after signing a one-year deal with Dallas in March. Back at practice Wednesday
The Cowboys designated Washington (foot) for return from injured reserve Wednesday.
Analysis: Just as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported would be the case earlier Wednesday, the Cowboys have cleared Washington to practice for the first time since he fractured his right foot in an Aug. 1 training camp workout. Because he's spent the past four months recovering from surgery, Washington may need more than a trio of practices before gaining clearance to play, so he's far from a safe bet to be activated from IR ahead of this Sunday's game against the Colts. Poised to practice Wednesday
The Cowboys are expected to designate Washington (foot) for return from injured reserve Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Once the transaction is official, Washington will be eligible to practice Wednesday for the first time since Aug. 1, when he fractured his foot early in training camp and ultimately required surgery. Before getting hurt, Washington looked to be in strong position to begin the season as the Cowboys' No. 2 receiver behind CeeDee Lamb, but Michael Gallup completed his recovery from ACL surgery early in the season and has settled into that role since Week 4. Could practice soon
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that Washington (foot) has a chance of "joining us here real soon," Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Washington's 21-day practice window could realistically open soon, as he's now almost three months removed from initially having suffered his right foot fracture. Once healthy, Washington will stand to handle a depth role in Dallas' receiving corps, which has been in need of contributors at wideout behind CeeDee Lamb.

Not ready to return to practice
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said that Washington (foot) won't return to practice Wednesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Though McCarthy said Washington is "very, very close to being ready," the wide receiver won't be designated to return from injured reserve ahead of the Cowboys' first practice coming out of a bye week. With that in mind, Washington seems unlikely to make his 2022 debut Sunday in Green Bay, but a return in Week 11 or later still seems like a good bet. Feeling good, could return soon
Washington (foot) isn't sure when he will make his season debut but said he's "pretty much healed" and "felt great" during a workout Wednesday, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Washington suffered a foot fracture in August and has been on injured reserve since the start of the regular season. The Cowboys needed him in September more than they do now, but Washington could nonetheless carve out a role at some point this season amidst a receiver group that includes CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup and Noah Brown.

Still needs more time
Washington (foot) is eligible to come off injured reserve ahead of Week 5, but he still needs more time to rehab, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Washington suffered a foot fracture at the beginning of August and has remained sidelined since. There hasn't been any reports of a setback, so the wideout appears on track with his rehab, but he simply needs more time. In his absence, Noah Brown has emerged as a solid secondary option behind CeeDee Lamb, while Michael Gallup (knee) is working his way back to full strength after making his season debut in Week 4.

He'll be eligible to come off IR ahead of a Week 5 tilt with the Rams, but it's not yet clear if he'll be ready to suit up by then. Washington was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, ruling him out for the first four games of the regular season.
Analysis: The soonest he can play is Oct. 9 against the Rams, at which point he'll be nearly 10 weeks removed from fracturing his foot during a practice. It's possible Washington misses time beyond that, as reports in early August suggested he would be out for 6-to-10 weeks.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, it initially was feared that he may have sustained a Jones fracture in his right foot, but tests confirmed it's a metatarsal fracture. Washington sustained a foot injury during Monday's practice, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.

Washington, who sported a walking boot last week, did some resistance cord work off to the side Thursday, Jon Machotaof The Athletic reports.
Analysis: While the specifics of Washington's injury are unclear, the wideout did at least shed his walking boot Thursday, which suggests that the issue he's dealing with is not a long-term concern. Once Washington is able to practice fully, he's in line to compete with third-round pick Jalen Tolbert for snaps behind CeeDee Lamb, which will be a situation to monitor, given that fellow wideout Michael Gallup is working his way back from a torn ACL suffered Week 17 of last season.

Analysis: Washington was held without a catch in the first half of Thursday's matchup, but he was more involved in the second half as the Steelers nearly pulled off an improbable comeback. The 25-year-old's four catches matched his highest mark of the year in what has been an inconsistent season for the receiver. Targeted once against Baltimore
Washington failed to haul in his lone target in Sunday's 20-19 win over the Ravens.
Analysis: Washington saw a downturn in playing time against Baltimore, as he was on the field for just 37 percent of the team's offensive snaps after playing more than 50 percent of the offensive snaps in each of the last three weeks. As a result, the 25-year-old was held without a catch for the first time since Week 2. Washington hauled in his lone target for nine yards in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Seahawks.
Analysis: The 2018 second-rounder returned to the field against the Seahawks after he missed last week's game due to a groin injury. Even though the Steelers were playing without JuJu Smith-Schuster (shoulder) in Week 6, Washington played just eight offensive snaps in the overtime win. Washington (groin) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Broncos.
Analysis: Washington was added to the injury report as a limited participant Thursday, and he's now been ruled out for Week 5 after sitting out Friday's practice. Ray-Ray McCloud is poised to operate as Pittsburgh's No. 4 wideout this weekend.

Limited in Thursday's practice
Washington (groin) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.
Analysis: Washington didn't have any limitations in Wednesday's practice but is apparently managing a groin injury Thursday. Assuming he's able to practice Friday, it wouldn't be surprising to see him on the field Sunday against the Broncos. However, he could see decreased work if Chase Claypool (hamstring) returns to action.

Racks up 69 yards in loss
Washington brought in four of five targets for 69 yards in Sunday's 27-17 loss to the Packers.
Analysis: Washington saw increased work last week with Diontae Johnson sidelined, and he remained involved in Week 4 since Chase Claypool (hamstring) was unavailable. He saw five targets for a second consecutive game and logged a season-high 69 yards in the loss. The 2018 second-rounder now has nine receptions for 99 yards across the first four weeks of the 2021 campaign. His workload at home against the Broncos in Week 5 likely depends on whether Claypool is able to return to the field.

Increased role on tap?
Washington could see an increased offensive role after Chase Claypool (hamstring) was ruled ahead of Sunday's contest, Burt Lauten of the Steelers' official site reports.
Analysis: Washington was a bit player through the first two weeks, but he finally saw a healthy workload in Week 3 with a number of Steelers pass catchers injured. While it's hard to imagine Washington siphoning a number of targets away from Diontae Johnson and JuJu Smith-Schuster, it's possible the sheer level of expected passing volume could afford the fourth-year wideout a couple of additional targets.

Three catches in Week 4 loss
Washington caught three of five targets for 20 yards in Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Bengals.
Analysis: Washington failed to capitalize on increased snap share with Diontae Johnson (knee) out and JuJu Smith-Schuster (ribs) joining him on the sidelines during the game. He'll work as the team's No. 2 receiver behind Chase Claypool if the two injured wideouts remain sidelined against the Packers in Week 4, but Washington hasn't proven capable of excelling in such a role.

Set for more work
Washington is line for more work Sunday against the Bengals with Diontae Johnson (knee) ruled out for the contest.
Analysis: Johnson was forced out on the final play of the Steelers' Week 2 loss to the Raiders, requiring assistance from two people to get off the field. His knee injury will keep him out at least one game, and Washington figures to benefit when the offense uses three-wide sets Sunday. But he'll be working behind JuJu Smith-Schuster and Chase Claypool, who could gobble up more of the available looks than Washington. Limited playing time in loss
Washington failed to haul in his lone target in Sunday's 26-17 loss to the Raiders.
Analysis: Washington caught two passes in the season opener against Buffalo, but he was on the field for just 21 percent of the team's offensive snaps Week 2. Although he's had a limited role to begin the year, he could see an uptick in playing time if Diontae Johnson (knee) is forced to miss additional time.

Logs two receptions in Week 1
Washington brought in both of his targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 23-16 win over Buffalo.
Analysis: Washington was limited in Friday's practice due to a finger injury, but he was still able to play a reserve role in Sunday's season opener. However, the 25-year-old's production unsurprisingly lagged behind Diontae Johnson, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Chase Claypool in the comeback victory.

Limited Friday, but no injury designation
Though Washington was added to the Steelers' injury report with a finger issue that limited him at practice Friday, he doesn't carry an injury designation for Sunday's season opener against the Bills, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: We'll operate under the assumption that Washington's finger issue is minor and won't impact his Week 1 availability. Heading into the season, he profile as Pittsburgh's clear No. 4 wide receiver behind Diontae Johnson, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Chase Claypool, a context that limits Washington's fantasy ceiling out of gate in 2021.

Fails to secure lone target
Washington was unable to secure his lone target in Friday's 34-9 preseason loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: Washington totaled three receptions for 24 yards in last week's preseason win over the Lions, but he was much less involved Friday despite playing 40 percent of the team's offensive snaps. The 2018 second-rounder had inconsistent results during the preseason and reportedly requested a trade following the Hall of Fame Game, but he's trending toward remaining in Pittsburgh ahead of the Week 1 matchup against the Bills. Three grabs in Saturday's win
Washington (leg) secured three of four targets for 24 yards in the Steelers' 26-20 preseason win over the Lions on Saturday night.
Analysis: The speedster was able to shake off the leg injury that had befallen him earlier in camp to suit up and play a solid role in the night's air attack. Washington made some waves earlier in August with a reported trade request, and a move elsewhere could still potentially come to fruition ahead of Week 1; however, for the moment, there's no indication the 2018 second-round pick won't open the new season in Pittsburgh, albeit as a likely No. 4 wideout once again.

Still dealing with leg injury
Washington had a wrap with ice on his lower right leg Saturday, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Washington has been bothered by the minor injury since at least last weekend, missing practice time shortly after ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the wideout had requested a trade. It makes sense given his standing as the No. 4 receiver in a contract year, but head coach Mike Tomlin and OC Matt Canada both downplayed the report and said Washington is an important part of the team/offense. Exits Sunday's practice
Washington left Sunday's practice and was seen icing his right leg while watching from the sideline, Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: It appears to be a minor injury because Washington didn't go to the locker room to receive treatment for the issue. It was reported earlier in the week the 25-year-old requested a trade, though coach Mike Tomlin refuted that speculation. Washington may take things easy for a couple days, but the issue shouldn't affect his status for the start of the regular season.

With regard to reports that Washington has requested a trade, coach Mike Tomlin indicated that the wideout hasn't approached him about such a matter, Chris Harlan of The Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports. "Those unnamed sources, we don't react to or respond to," Tomlin noted Saturday. "James has been great here and working and having a great camp."
Analysis: At this stage, Washington presumably slots in behind Diontae Johnson, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Chase Claypool in the Steelers' wideout pecking order, but the 2018 second-rounder still has "a good role" with the team, according to offensive coordinator Matt Canada. Asks for trade
Washington has requested a trade, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Analysis: The 2018 second-rounder saw his playing time dip last season and with JuJu Smith-Schuster, Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool also in the Steelers' wideout mix, a change of scenery could boost Washington's stock in 2021. It remains to be seen if the Steelers are inclined to move the 25-year-old, however.

Projects as No. 4 receiver
Washington is listed with the second unit on Pittsburgh's camp-opening depth chart.
Analysis: The starting wideouts, as expected, are Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and JuJu Smith-Schuster, while Washington is listed as Johnson's backup. There was some thought back in February/March that Washington could be promoted back to a starting role this year, but the Steelers ended up re-signing Smith-Schuster to a one-year, $8 million contract. As things stand, Washington is unlikely to start unless one of the three guys ahead of him misses time with an injury.

No receptions in Week 17
Washington failed to haul in either of his two targets in Sunday's 24-22 loss to the Browns.
Analysis: Washington had an inconsistent end to his regular season, as he was held without a catch in two of the three final games of the year. The 24-year-old averaged 9.2 yards per target in 2019, but his production dropped off in 2020, partially due to the emergence of Chase Claypool in the Steelers' passing game. Analysis: Washington was held without a catch in the Steelers' Week 15 loss to the Bengals, but he was slightly more productive against Indianapolis. Washington caught three passes (six targets) for 29 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 26-15 loss to Buffalo.
Analysis: Pittsburgh's offense struggled for the majority of this contest, and starter Diontae Johnson suffered another case of the drops, leading to a benching and another opportunity for Washington to get more playing time and his second consecutive game with a touchdown. Washington caught two of four targets for 80 yards and a touchdown in Monday's 23-17 loss to Washington.
Analysis: Washington broke a tackle following a medium-length reception and stretched it into a 50-yard touchdown toward the end of the second quarter. That play enabled him to finish atop Pittsburgh's receiving corps in yards despite catching only one other pass Monday. The 2018 second-rounder was on the field for 28 of the team's 73 offensive snaps as the Steelers relied heavily on their passing attack Week 10.
