Minmal production against Patriots
Johnson rushed six times for 30 yards and failed to reel in his lone target in Sunday's 24-21 win over the Patriots.
Analysis: Johnson wasn't able to get much going Sunday despite leading all Bills running backs in playing time. The veteran handled 23 offensive snaps, while James Cook and Ray Davis played 21 and 14 snaps, respectively. While Cook is the clear favorite for valuable running back touches in Buffalo's offense, Johnson remains an unreliable fantasy option heading into a Week 17 matchup against the Jets.

Leads team in receiving yardage
Johnson rushed twice for nine yards and caught all five of his targets for 114 yards in Sunday's 48-42 win over the Lions.
Analysis: Johnson's 123 scrimmage yards were by far a season high for the running back. The veteran led the team in receiving yards despite playing just 30 percent of the Bills' offensive snaps in the contest. Although he had an impressive performance against the Lions, Johnson's inconsistent usage and production make him difficult to trust for fantasy. Barring an injury to starter James Cook, Johnson should not be relied upon in the fantasy playoffs. The Bills will host the Patriots in Week 16.

Finds end zone in Week 14
Johnson caught two of three targets for 55 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 44-42 loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Johnson failed to record a single carry in the contest despite playing the second most offensive snaps (21) at running back behind starter James Cook (27) and ahead of Ray Davis (13). Johnson's touchdown was his third receiving touchdown on the season, bringing him to four total scores through 13 games. Most of the 27-year-old's yardage total Sunday came from his touchdown, which was a 41-yard pass from Josh Allen in the second quarter. Six touches in win
Johnson rushed five times for 28 yards and secured his lone target for nine yards in Sunday's 35-10 win over the 49ers.
Analysis: Johnson saw five opportunities on the ground for the second-straight game, but the veteran was unable to make much happen with his limited attempts. The 27-year-old played just 16 of the Bills' 58 offensive snaps, behind starter James Cook (26) and rookie Ray Davis (19). Barring injuries, Johnson should continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes as the Bills square off against the Rams in Week 14.

Limited production in win
Johnson rushed five times for 18 yards and failed to secure his lone target in Sunday's 30-21 win over the Chiefs.
Analysis: Johnson played 33 of the Bills' 73 offensive snaps Sunday, ahead of both James Cook (27) and Ray Davis (15). Despite handling his largest snap share of the season, the veteran running back was unable to get much going. Going forward, Johnson will continue to operate in his depth role, barring injuries to Cook and Davis, keeping him far off the fantasy radar as the Bills head into a Week 12 bye.

Targeted three times in Week 10
Johnson caught all three of his targets for 32 yards in Sunday's 30-20 win over the Colts.
Analysis: Johnson failed to record a single carry in the contest, however. The Bills' No. 3 running back has now totaled just 17 rushing attempts for 99 yards and a score on the ground through 10 weeks, while playing behind teammates James Cook and Ray Davis. Johnson has also recorded eight catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns. With Cook and Davis both healthy, the 27-year-old Johnson doesn't hold much fantasy value heading into a Week 11 clash with Kansas City.

Hits pay dirt against Titans
Johnson secured his lone target for a four-yard touchdown in Sunday's 34-10 win over the Titans.
Analysis: Johnson failed to record a single rushing attempt in the contest as he operated as the No. 3 running back behind teammates James Cook and Ray Davis. The 27-year-old's minimal usage coincided with Cook's return from a toe injury that sidelined him in Week 6. Assuming the Buffalo backfield is completely healthy, Johnson does not see enough touches to be in consideration for fantasy purposes. The Bills are set to visit the Seahawks in Week 8.

Fills backup role Monday
Johnson rushed four times for 34 yards and was not targeted as a passer in Monday's 23-20 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Johnson was one of two candidates to replace starter James Cook's (toe) touches Monday, but it turned out to be fellow backup Ray Davis (152 combined yards on 23 touches) who benefited from a fantasy standpoint. The 26-year-old Johnson was worth a waiver add Week 6, but given the touch distribution -- plus the potential for Cook to return -- the backup running back is a low-end fantasy option Week 7. The Bills are set to host the Titans on Sunday.

Low volume in Week 5 loss
Johnson carried three times for 15 yards and was not targeted in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Texans.
Analysis: Johnson was out there for a season-high 36 percent of the offensive snaps, but with the Bills playing catch-up for most of the day, there wasn't much room for change-of-pace carries. Johnson remains ahead of Ray Davis in the pecking order behind starter James Cook, as Davis played only two offensive snaps Sunday. That said, the No. 2 spot in Buffalo is strictly an insurance or deep reserve fantasy play, as Cook is serving as a bell-cow back and is even getting goal-line carries this season. Of…read more

Hits pay dirt in win
Johnson carried three times for 18 yards and caught all three of his targets for 28 yards and a touchdown in Monday's 47-10 win over the Jaguars.
Analysis: Johnson ended up having his best statistical day of the young season Monday, seeing season highs in snap percentage (27), rushing yards (18), and targets (3). With that said, the veteran's statistics were not overly impressive, and his increased usage was likely the result of the Bills resting key players in the second half amid the blowout. Two touches to Davis' 10
Johnson rushed once for minus-1 yard and added one catch for 33 yards on two targets in Thursday's 31-10 win over the Dolphins.
Analysis: Johnson watched James Cook score three first-half touchdowns, while rookie Ray Davis got most of the mop-up duty with the game out of reach, finishing with nine carries to Johnson's one. While it's a positive that Johnson is no longer bothered by the knee injury he picked up in the season opener, he seems to have fallen to third on Buffalo's running-back depth chart heading into a Week 3 visit from the Jaguars.

Cleared for Week 2
Johnson (knee) does not have an injury designation for Thursday's game against the Dolphins.
Analysis: Johnson exited the Bills' Week 1 win over the Cardinals with a knee issue, but the running back was listed as a full participant in Wednesday's walk-through session and will be available to face Miami. He's thus slated to continue to see complementary work along with Ray Davis, behind top back James Cook. In that capacity, Johnson's fantasy upside is limited.

Analysis: Johnson was forced out of Sunday's 34-28 win over the Cardinals due to the knee injury, though his ability to practice in some fashion two days later suggests he's not dealing with a major injury. However, with the Bills facing a quick turnaround for Week 2 with a Thursday night game against the Dolphins, it's unclear if Johnson will heal quickly enough to make himself available. Johnson secured a spot on Buffalo's 53-man roster Tuesday, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Johnson was one of three running backs to make the team, joining starter James Cook and rookie fourth-round draft pick Ray Davis. Johnson and Davis are expected to split backup duties. Cook and Davis are listed at 210 and 220 pounds, respectively, so both backups are better suited for short-yardage work than the 190-pound Cook, though 237-pound quarterback Josh Allen often calls his own number in such situations.

Works way up depth chart in 2023
Johnson gained 132 rushing yards on 30 carries (4.4 yards per rush) and caught all seven of his targets for 62 yards and a touchdown in 10 regular-season games this season.
Analysis: Earlier in the season, the veteran RB saw most of his action on special teams, but by the time the Bills got to their playoff run, Johnson had climbed over an injured Damien Harris (head/neck), a freshly signed Leonard Fournette and an aging Latavius Murray on the depth chart. Analysis: Johnson's meager rushing total was enough to lead all Jets running backs, as New York's banged-up offensive line failed to open up any holes. With Zach Wilson struggling mightily, New York inserted the Taysom Hill-like Chris Streveler under center in the third quarter, and Streveler wound up leading the team with 54 rushing yards.

Catches six passes with Carter out
Johnson rushed once for three yards and caught six of seven targets for 38 yards in Sunday's 27-22 loss to Minnesota.
Analysis: With Michael Carter (ankle) inactive, Johnson was the Jets' running back of choice in passing situations. Johnson will either take on a similar role in Week 14 against the Bills if Carter sits again or be relegated to the bench if Carter returns, as Zonovan Knight has emerged as the Jets' primary running back since Carter went down.

Committee role likely in Week 13
Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Johnson is expected to be part of a three-man backfield committee Sunday against the Vikings that also includes Zonovan Knight and James Robinson, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Robinson was the odd man out as a healthy inactive in last week's win over the Bears, but Saleh suggested that Robinson, Johnson and Knight will all see opportunities Sunday with lead back Michael Carter (ankle) listed as doubtful and not expected to play. After Carter departed last week upon taking two snaps in the second half, Knight finished with a 64 percent snap share after halftime, compared to a 29 percent mark from Johnson. Scores while Carter sprains ankle
Johnson rushed five times for 62 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-10 win over the Bears. He added a 16-yard catch and was targeted twice.
Analysis: James Robinson (coach's decision) was inactive and Michael Carter suffered a sprained ankle, leaving Johnson in a change-of-pace role behind rookie Zonovan Knight. Johnson's effective with the ball in his hands but has been plagued by a litany of drops and other miscues when given extended run in the past. Four carries in Week 11
Johnson rushed four times for four yards and didn't catch his only target in Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: The running back trio of Michael Carter, James Robinson and Johnson combined for 33 rushing yards on 19 carries, so Johnson wasn't alone in his inability to get going on the ground. Limited to a depth role in a sputtering Jets offense, Johnson's unlikely to garner much fantasy consideration in Week 12, even with the shaky Bears defense in town.

Two carries in win
Johnson rushed twice for 17 yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 20-17 win over the Bills.
Analysis: James Robinson (knee) was viewed as questionable heading into the game, but he suited up and handled 15 touches. With 13 touches going to Michael Carter, there weren't many opportunities left over for Johnson, who is a distant third on New York's running back depth chart.

Two carries, two targets in Week 8
Johnson rushed twice for six yards and didn't catch either of his two targets in Sunday's 22-17 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: New York's acquisition of James Robinson via trade earlier in the week kept Johnson relegated to a third-string role behind Robinson and Michael Carter. Breece Hall (knee) is out for the season, but Johnson's role in the Jets backfield remains minimal.

Climbs up depth chart
Johnson is expected to step in as the top change-of-pace option behind Michael Carter beginning with Sunday's game against the Patriots after tests confirmed lead back Breece Hall (knee) suffered a season-ending ACL tear and a minor meniscus injury during the Jets' Week 7 win over the Broncos, Adam Schefter and Rich Cimini of ESPN.com report.
Analysis: Johnson already noticed an uptick in playing time when Hall exited in the second quarter of the 16-9 win over Denver, logging seven snaps on offense after playing just one in the prior four contests combined. During his limited time on the field, Johnson turned his two touches into nine yards, and while his output could increase from here, he's still unlikely to emerge as a viable fantasy option in most leagues with Carter capable of filling Hall's three-down role. Two touches after Hall injury
Johnson rushed once for three yards and caught his only target for six yards in Sunday's 16-9 win over the Broncos.
Analysis: Breece Hall (knee) departed in the first half with what's feared to be a torn ACL. Michael Carter stepped into the lead role in Hall's absence, while Johnson took on the change-of-pace duties previously occupied by Carter. If Hall indeed is done for the season, Johnson should have a clear path to a handful of touches per game as Carter's backup.

Concludes quiet preseason
Johnson rushed seven times for 15 yards in Sunday's 31-27 preseason win over the Giants.
Analysis: Johnson dealt with a hamstring injury in training camp and never quite got going this preseason. Johnson (hamstring) rushed three times for eight yards and caught his only target for three yards in Monday's 24-16 preseason win over the Falcons.
Analysis: Johnson returned to game action after sitting out much of August with a hamstring injury. The injury was an ill-timed one for a player who's on the roster bubble, but Johnson will likely get more touches in Sunday's preseason finale against the Giants as he tries to earn a spot.

Johnson is currently dealing with a hamstring injury, Andy Vasquez of The Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Johnson doesn't currently have a timetable for a return, but he's unlikely to return to the field this week. The 24-year-old was able to earn an increase in snaps last season, but the addition of Breece Hall in the first round of the 2022 Draft will threaten his role.

Johnson finished the 2021 season with 61 carries for 238 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games. He added 34 catches for 372 yards and two touchdowns on 55 targets.
Analysis: Johnson handled himself adequately while bouncing up and down the depth chart in the Jets backfield. He's explosive with the ball in his hands but struggled with drops and a lack of awareness, with the low point of his season coming when the ball bounced off Johnson's back for an interception. Finds end zone after Carter injury
Johnson rushed five times for 35 yards and a touchdown while catching three of four targets for 47 yards in Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Michael Carter exited the game with a concussion in the first half, leaving Johnson and Austin Walter to split carries with Tevin Coleman on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Johnson had been used sparingly of late but made the most of the extra opportunities, giving the Jets a 24-10 lead with a one-yard touchdown plunge in the third quarter. Johnson rushed six times for 17 yards and caught four of seven targets for 40 yards in Sunday's 30-9 loss to New Orleans.
Analysis: The Jets were already without Michael Carter (ankle) and Tevin Coleman (concussion) coming in, and Austin Walter was ruled out due to an illness without playing a snap, leaving just Johnson and La'Mical Perine to share backfield snaps. Neither guy got much going on the ground, though Johnson finished as the second-leading receiver in the struggling Jets passing game. Opportunity knocks with Coleman out
Johnson could take on a larger role out of the backfield Sunday against the Saints with Tevin Coleman (concussion) ruled out for the contest, Ethan B. Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
Analysis: Johnson and Austin Walter likely will split reps in the backfield with Coleman sidelined along with Michael Carter (ankle), who remains on injured reserve. The Jets have been reluctant to give Johnson much work on the ground, as he's logged more than six rushing attempts only once this season, but he has caught at least five passes on three separate occasions.

Johnson rushed once for one yard and caught two of four targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 33-18 loss to the Eagles.
Analysis: Johnson hasn't capitalized on the absence of Michael Carter (ankle), having been out-touched 32-9 by Tevin Coleman over the past two weeks. Coleman will likely receive the lion's share of playing time in New York's backfield against the stout Saints front in Week 14, leaving Johnson in a change-of-pace role once again.

Just six carries with Carter out
Johnson rushed six times for 42 yards and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 21-14 win over Houston.
Analysis: Johnson averaged an impressive 7.0 yards per carry but finished third on the team in attempts behind Tevin Coleman (16) and Austin Walter (nine). Walter was the only one of the three to score a touchdown, and it's apparent that Michael Carter's (ankle) absence won't translate to a leading role for Johnson. The lone ball thrown in Johnson's direction bounced off his back for an interception in the first quarter, so perhaps rookie quarterback Zach Wilson was loath to throw Johnson's way again.

Johnson and Tevin Coleman are both expected to fill larger roles out of the Jets backfield beginning with Sunday's game against the Texans after lead back Michael Carter (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, Al Iannazzone of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Carter's injury isn't viewed as season-ending, and the Jets are seemingly optimistic that he'll be ready to play as soon as Week 15 against the Dolphins after he sits out the required three games following his placement on IR. In any case, Carter's short-term absence paves the way for Johnson to pick up more work after he played no more than 43 percent of the Jets' offensive snaps in any of his seven appearances since maxing out at a 57-percent snap share Week 3 in Denver. Two touches as Carter hurts ankle
Johnson rushed once for five yards and caught his only target for eight yards in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Dolphins.
Analysis: Johnson was largely phased out of the offense as Michael Carter played a three-down role for most of the game, but Carter exited late with an ankle injury. If Carter's not ready to return in Week 12 against the Texans, Johnson would likely return to the prominent pass-catching role he's played in recent weeks, having posted five-plus receptions in three of the past five games.

Five catches in Week 10
Johnson rushed twice for two yards and caught five of eight targets for 36 yards in Sunday's 45-17 loss to Buffalo.
Analysis: Johnson has become a consistent contributor in the Jets' passing attack, as he came into this game with a receiving touchdown in each of the previous two and now has at least five catches in three of the last four. Michael Carter remains the top option in New York's backfield, and the Jets welcomed Tevin Coleman back from a hamstring injury for this one, but Johnson's receiving ability makes him a player worth monitoring in fantasy, especially in PPR formats.

Johnson rushed four times for 21 yards and secured two of three targets for 40 yards and a touchdown in the Jets' 45-30 loss to the Colts on Thursday night. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Johnson logged nine fewer carries than backfield mate Michael Carter, but he still made a fantasy impact with a 22-yard scoring grab late in the fourth quarter. Analysis: Johnson's five touches trailed both Michael Carter (14) and Tevin Coleman (six) in the Jets' backfield. New York's offense came alive with a season-high 27 points in the team's first win of the season, but Johnson's limited role suggests he'll remain a fantasy afterthought barring a shakeup in the Jets' backfield pecking order. Analysis: The third-year player essentially served as the Jets' No. 2 RB, as he split the backfield in the first half with Tevin Coleman before turning things over to rookie Michael Carter and La'Mical Perine after the break. Falling behind in RB competition
Johnson is the No. 3 running back on the Jets' initial unofficial depth chart.
Analysis: Johnson is behind Tevin Coleman and La'Mical Perine but surprisingly ahead of rookie fourth-round pick Michael Carter. All indications out of camp suggest that Carter is impressing the coaching staff and likely will climb before long, so this is far from an ideal early placement for Johnson, who entered camp as part of an open competition for lead-back duties. Though Johnson's strong play down the stretch last season has made the starting job his to lose in Calvaruso's eyes, free-agent acquisition Tevin Coleman, rookie fourth-round draft pick Michael Carter and fellow young running backs La'Mical Perine and Josh Adams will all be vying for that spot as well.

Johnson's one-yard touchdown plunge with 5:34 remaining put the Jets up by four, but that lead disintegrated in heartbreaking fashion on a 46-yard Henry Ruggs touchdown with five seconds left. Finally getting a chance to shine after showing some promise in a limited role, the shifty Johnson would be in line to remain New…read more

Three touches as backup
Johnson rushed twice for three yards and caught one of two targets for one yard in Sunday's 20-3 loss to the Dolphins.
Analysis: Johnson backed up Frank Gore with La'Mical Perine (ankle) on IR, but Gore got 21 touches to Johnson's three. With coach Adam Gase content to feed the plodding Gore rather than exploring alternatives, Johnson's role should remain minimal in Week 13 against a Raiders team that has struggled to defend running backs.

In RB rotation
Johnson will be part of a running back rotation with Frank Gore and Josh Adams for the next three games with La'Mical Perine (ankle) on IR, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.
Analysis: Johnson earned his highest offensive snap share (23 percent) of the season this past Sunday against the Jets, turning it into four catches (on six targets) for 17 yards. With Gore set to lead the backfield -- he's averaging 13.3 touches per game this season -- Johnson may serve as the pass-catching option for the group. In 23 career games, Johnson has hauled in 29 of 40 targets for 132 yards.

Four catches as Perine goes down
Johnson didn't record a carry but caught four of six targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 34-28 loss to the Chargers.
Analysis: Johnson got some action as a receiving option out of the backfield after La'Mical Perine exited with an ankle injury. If Perine's unable to play against the Dolphins in Week 12, Johnson would serve as the shifty passing-down complement to veteran bruiser Frank Gore.

No offensive touches against Pats
Johnson did not garner a carry or a target on two offensive snaps during Monday night's 30-27 loss to New England.
Analysis: The Maryland product was active for a fourth consecutive outing Week 9, though he was not a part of the Jets' offensive game plan after fielding four touches in Kansas City last Sunday. Johnson received most of his work on special teams, with 12 snaps in that department, while Frank Gore (12 carries) and La'Mical Perine (six carries) split the RB rush attempts, combining for 65 yards against New England's No. 25 rush defense. Four touches in blowout loss
Johnson rushed three times for 15 yards and caught his lone target for another six in Sunday's 35-9 loss to the Chiefs.
Analysis: Johnson finished fourth on the team in carries behind Frank Gore (10), La'Mical Perine (eight) and quarterback Sam Darnold (four). He also had a 17-yard kick return on special teams. Johnson doesn't see enough playing time on offense to make much of a difference, and that's likely to remain the case barring an injury to Gore or Perine.

Limited to kick return duties
Johnson returned three kickoffs for 66 yards but didn't touch the ball on offense in Sunday's 18-10 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Johnson turned three carries into 42 yards last week, but he didn't get any opportunities in New York's backfield against Buffalo, while Frank Gore and La'Mical Perine combined for 99 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries apiece. Coach Adam Gase seems content to keep giving the 37-year-old Gore double-digit touches, and while Perine has started to take on a larger role, Johnson remains a distant third on the running back depth chart.

Breaks off 34-yard run
Johnson made his Jets debut in Sunday's 24-0 loss to Miami, rushing three times for 42 yards and failing to corral his only target.
Analysis: Johnson broke off a 34-yard run for New York's longest offensive play of the game, but he operated as the third-string running back behind veteran Frank Gore (11 carries for 46 yards) and rookie La'Mical Perine (seven carries for 27 yards). If Johnson keeps flashing enough speed to get to the outside, he could provide a much-needed spark for the lifeless Jets offense and start to take on a larger role in Week 7 against Buffalo and beyond.

Could play more sans Bell
Jets head coach Adam Gase said Wednesday that Johnson will have the opportunity to earn more playing time following the release of starting running back Le'Veon Bell, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: Gase emphasized that rookie La'Mical Perine will play a larger role at 37-year-old Frank Gore's expense following Bell's release, but he also mentioned Johnson and practice-squad running back Josh Adams as candidates to take on more work. Johnson was claimed off waivers by the Jets two weeks ago but has yet to make his team debut.

Claimed by Gang Green
Johnson was claimed off waivers by the Jets on Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Johnson was waived by the Lions on Thursday and will join a Jets team on which he should have more opportunities to earn playing time, at least while Le'Veon Bell (hamstring) is on IR. The 23-year-old Maryland product joins a running back room currently consisting of 37-year-old Frank Gore, rookie fourth-rounder La'Mical Perine and Dolphins castoff Kalen Ballage. Waived by Lions
Johnson was waived by the Lions on Thursday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Johnson somewhat surprisingly made the Lions roster out of training camp over fifth-round rookie Jason Huntley. Now that Detroit coaches seem more than content with a top backfield trio of Adrian Peterson, Kerryon Johnson and D'Andre Swift - with Jamal Agnew mixing in on gadget plays - it appears Ty Johnson is no longer needed, either. However, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Lions try to stash Ty Johnson on the practice squad for insurance purposes.

Healthy scratch against Cards
Johnson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against Arizona.
Analysis: The 2019 sixth-round draft pick fielded five offensive snaps last Sunday in a loss to Green Bay, but he has yet to garner a single carry on the young season. Johnson logged an average of 3.9 carries per game last year for a bottom-12 Lions rushing attack, but with D'Andre Swift and Adrian Peterson now in the mix, his offensive involvement has fallen by the wayside.

Gets snaps on offense
Johnson was targeted once but did not record a catch during Sunday's loss to Green Bay.
Analysis: Johnson again saw the majority (12 of 17 total snaps) of his playing time come on special teams. Barring an injury to Adrian Peterson, Kerryon Johnson or D'Andre Swift, this modest offensive involvement should be the expectation for Ty Johnson until further notice.

No offensive snaps
Johnson didn't log a snap on offense during Sunday's 27-23 loss to Chicago.

Makes the cut
Johnson made the Lions' initial 53-man roster in advance of Sunday's season opener against the Bears, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Detroit's selection of Jason Huntley in the fifth round of this spring's draft seemingly put Johnson on the roster bubble, but the former was surprisingly let go over the weekend. That leaves Johnson in a backfield with Kerryon Johnson, D'Andre Swift (undisclosed) and Adrian Peterson, while Bo Scarbrough (undisclosed) heads to injured reserve. Depending on Swift's health status, Johnson seems like a candidate to handle some of the backfield work on passing downs this weekend.

Potentially on roster bubble
Johnson could be on the roster bubble entering the 2020 season, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Johnson's descent down the depth chart is somewhat surprising, given that he compiled 382 total yards despite playing just 318 snaps as a rookie. However, after the Lions took two running backs in the 2020 NFL Draft -- D'Andre Swift in the second round and Jason Huntley in the fifth -- Johnson's skill set as a multi-tooled athlete may be redundant. Huntley's arrival in particular could spell doom for Johnson, as the New Mexico State product proved to be a capable returner in college while…read more

No lock for 2020 roster
Johnson isn't guaranteed a roster spot in advance of the 2020 season, Chris Burke of the Athletic reports.
Analysis: On the surface, Johnson's 4.3 yards per carry from 2019 seems respectable for a sixth-round rookie. Take out his 40-yard scamper from Week 17, though, and that number drops to 3.8, which seems much more representative of a player who seemingly struggled as a runner on a weekly basis. In fact, it's hard to say Johnson fared well as a receiving option either considering he averaged just 4.5 yards on his 24 receptions. Makes most of limited opportunity
Johnson carried the ball three times for 65 yards in the team's Week 17 loss to the Packers.
Analysis: Johnson worked behind both Kerryon Johnson and Bo Scarbrough but finished the contest as the Lions' leading rusher. The majority of his production came on a 40-yard run with 20 seconds remaining in the first half, setting up a field goal as time expired. Ty Johnson spent a few weeks as the team's primary running back in the absence of Kerryon Johnson, though he'll begin the 2020 season strictly as a backup with a healthier depth chart in front of him.

Three carries in Week 16 loss
Johnson carried three times for 20 yards during Sunday's 27-17 loss to Denver.
Analysis: With Kerryon Johnson and Bo Scarbrough back from their respective injuries, Ty remained on the active roster while last week's feature back, Wes Hills, was a healthy scratch. Johnson might get another handful of carries in Sunday's season finale against Green Bay, but he'll most certainly remain a distant third option in this backfield.

Six touches in backup role
Johnson rushed twice for three yards and caught four of five targets for 17 yards while fumbling once during Sunday's 38-17 loss to Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Despite pre-game reports listing Johnson as the expected starter, it was actually Wes Hills -- who had been promoted from the practice squad Saturday -- who opened the game with the first-string offense. While Johnson still finished the game having logged more offensive snaps, Hills had five times as many carries and both of the Lions' rushing scores on the day. Draws Week 15 start
The Lions announced Johnson as their starting running back for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Johnson will apparently be on the field for the Lions' first offensive snap of the day, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he'll be in store to fill the lead role out of the backfield as Detroit looks to replace the injured Bo Scarbrough (ribs). May see role increase sans Scarbrough
Johnson and J.D. McKissic are expected to headline the Lions' Week 15 backfield with Bo Scarbrough (ribs) ruled out for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Scarbrough had operated as Detroit's lead option on the ground for the past four games, but his inactive status leaves Johnson, McKissic and practice squad callup Wes Hills as the lone healthy options at running back. Given Hills' lack of prior experience, Johnson and McKissic look like the best bets for touches and production out of the Detroit backfield, with coach Matt Patricia likely to ride the hot hand between the two. Minimal role
Johnson carried the ball twice for three yards in the team's Week 14 loss to the Vikings. He added one reception for seven yards.
Analysis: Johnson's role continued to shrink as he lacked involvement in both the passing and rushing games. Bo Scarbrough accounted for 19 of the team's 22 rushing attempts, causing Johnson to tally his lowest carry total since Week 1. Johnson's targets also shrunk, with J.D. McKissic drawing four targets out of the backfield. To make matters worse, Johnson will draw a stiff matchup against the Buccaneers in Week 15.

Totals 29 yards
Johnson rushed three times for 12 yards and caught all three of his targets for 17 yards during Thursday's 24-20 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: Johnson unsurprisingly worked in a limited capacity behind newly established workhorse Bo Scarbrough, who handled the ball on 21 of his 36 snaps. By comparison, Johnson garnered only six touches on 25 snaps, which offers a clear indication of whom Detroit wants to carry the load. While Johnson at least seems to be tracking toward a bigger role than J.D. McKissic, the latter is adept in pass protection and has easily been the more explosive player when the ball is in his hands. With that said,…read more

In Scarbrough's shadow
Johnson rushed four times for 11 yards and caught both of his targets for 10 yards during Sunday's 19-16 loss to Washington.
Analysis: While it's worth noting that Johnson did handle 27 offensive snaps Sunday compared to 38 for Bo Scarbrough, it's also hard to ignore that the latter's ascendance is starting to make Johnson almost entirely irrelevant for fantasy purposes. Not only was Scarbrough much more effective with his touches while running for 98 yards on 18 carries, but Johnson is now averaging 3.4 yards per carry through his first 11 games as a pro and hasn't provided many reasons for an expanded role as the season…read more

Limited in loss to Dallas
Johnson carried two times for six yards and caught his only target for no gain during Sunday's 35-27 loss to the Cowboys.
Analysis: Johnson took a back seat to the newly-signed Bo Scarbrough in the run game and looked on as J.D. McKissic led the backfield in receptions. He did little with the opportunities he was given, and he seems to be losing traction as an option for Detroit. As such, Johnson seems unlikely to make a major impact next Sunday against the Redskins.

Johnson does not carry an injury designation into Sunday's contest after clearing concussion protocol.
Analysis: As a result of clearing the protocol, Johnson is set to play against the Cowboys. Since Kerryon Johnson was placed on injured reserve in Week 7, Ty Johnson has been less than spectacular filling in as the nominal starter, averaging just 3.3 yards per carry across 21 attempts. Questionable for Week 11
Johnson (concussion) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
Analysis: The rookie will still need to gain clearance from an independent neurologist before getting the green light to play this weekend, but he looks on track to return to action after a concussion knocked him out early in the Week 10 loss to the Bears. After opening the week as a non-participant in practice, Johnson advanced to limited work Thursday before taking full contact in Friday's session. Johnson (concussion) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
Analysis: Considering he was a non-participant Wednesday in the Lions' first practice of the week, Johnson's ability to take part in non-contact work Thursday implies he's made some progress through the NFL's concussion protocol. Underwhelming effort vs. Raiders
Johnson carried nine times for 29 yards and caught three passes for an additional seven yards during Sunday's 31-24 loss to the Raiders.
Analysis: Johnson led the team in carries but came away with little, as he averaged 3.2 yards per rush. He also hauled in all three of his targets, but he fared even worse in terms of yards per reception. Meanwhile, J.D. McKissic piled up 72 scrimmage yards and a touchdown, so the balance of power in the Detroit backfield could shift again heading into next Sunday's game in Chicago.

Johnson is in line to start Sunday's contest against the Raiders after Tra Carson (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve.
Analysis: Stop us if you've heard this one before. While it's entirely possible newly called up Paul Perkins could wander into the majority of the carries Sunday -- as Carson did against the Giants last week -- Johnson, and to some extent J.D.
