Inks new deal with Jags
The Jaguars extended Beathard on Friday, Demetrius Harvey of The Florida Times-Union reports.
Analysis: After having signed a reported two-year deal with the Jaguars, Beathard is in line to remain the team's primary backup quarterback to starter Trevor Lawrence as the 2023 season approaches. The 29-year-old, whose last NFL regular-season start was in 2020 with the 49ers, appeared in four games last season and went 7-for-11 with 35 passing yards and an interception in that span.

Gains clearance
Beathard (groin) was cleared to practice Sunday according to head coach Doug Pederson, Mark Long of the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Beathard was carted off the field during an early June minicamp practice, and has been out or limited since. The 28-year-old was considered the favorite to back up Trevor Lawrence, and he'll now work to regain any lost ground to Jake Luton and Kyle Sloter on those expectations, if any.

Out Thursday
Beathard (groin) will not play in the Hall of Fame Game against the Raiders on Thursday, Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Beathard is still recovering from a groin injury suffered in minicamp. The 28-year-old has been limited in practice and isn't quite ready to take the field yet. With Trevor Lawrence also getting the night off , Jake Luton will get the starting nod.

Still limited at camp
Beathard (groin) was working on the side during training camp Sunday, John Oehser and J.P. Shadrick of the Jaguars' official site reports.
Analysis: Beathard suffered the injury during practice in early June. The injury was severe enough for him to be carted off the field, but he was expected to be available for training camp. Although he is participating, it appears that he is still currently limited by the injury. Beathard is supposed to serve as Trevor Lawrence's backup, although the extra snaps with the offense for Jake Luton and Kyle Sloter could be a detriment to those expectations.

Likely to be fine for training camp
Beathard (groin) is expected to be fine for training camp, Eugene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union reports.
Analysis: Beathard was carted off the practice field with a groin injury Monday, but the issue isn't expected to be serious. Assuming he's ready to play by training camp, the 28-year-old is the frontrunner to serve as Trevor Lawrence's primary backup this year.

Expected to avoid surgery
Beathard's recent groin injury isn't expected to require surgery, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Beathard was carted off the practice field Monday after suffering the injury, but the quarterback appears to have avoided a significant issue. The 2017 third-round pick is the favorite to be Trevor Lawrence's primary backup in 2022, but his recent injury may give Jake Luton and EJ Perry an opportunity to compete for a larger role.

Suffers groin injury
Beathard was carted off the practice field Monday after injuring his groin during practice, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: An MRI is pending to determine the severity of the injury. Beathard is the favorite to be Trevor Lawrence's primary backup in 2022 after occupying that same position in 2021, but that's now up in the air until he gets his imaging results. Jake Luton, whom Jacksonville signed in February after he spent a season on Miami's practice squad, also is on hand for the Jaguars.

Gets hurt during practice
Beathard was loaded onto a cart and brought to the locker room after apparently sustaining an injury at practice Monday, Mark Long of the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: It's unclear what exactly the injury is or when the Jaguars can reasonably expect Beathard to return, but it's a situation worth monitoring considering he was the primary backup to Trevor Lawrence in 2021 and the favorite to retain that position in 2022.

Activated off reserve/COVID-19 list
Beathard was activated off of the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.
Analysis: The quarterback was placed on the COVID list Friday, which forced him to miss the Jaguars' season finale victory against the Colts. Beathard signed a two-year contract with the Jaguars in the offseason, appearing in two games as Trevor Lawrence's primary backup.

Sent to COVID list
The Jaguars placed Beathard (undisclosed) on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday.
Analysis: Beathard will need to fully clear league protocols before returning to team facilities, which puts his status in doubt for Sunday's season finale against Indianapolis. If Beathard is unavailable Week 18, practice squad signal-caller Danny Etling will stand to bump to the active roster and operate as the top backup to Trevor Lawrence.

Entrenched as top backup
Beathard completed five of 10 passes for 86 yards and an interception during Sunday's preseason win against Dallas.
Analysis: It was a poor showing for Beathard on Sunday, but his role as Trevor Lawrence's top backup was already secured after Gardner Minshew was traded to the Eagles on Saturday. Overall Beathard played well between the three exhibition contests, completing 27 of 40 pass attempts for 309 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. The 27-year-old is a solid backup option at quarterback, though things will have obviously gone wrong for the Jaguars if he's seeing any significant playing time in…read more

Another strong showing
Beathard completed nine of 14 pass attempts for 121 yards and two touchdowns during Monday's preseason game against the Saints.
Analysis: Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew continue to operate as Jacksonville's top two quarterbacks, but Beathard has played well in the No. 3 role. He completed 13 of 16 pass attempts for 102 yards and a touchdown during the preseason opener last week. The veteran signal-caller is doing his best so far in the preseason to show the Jaguars he's fit to be the top backup.

Brought off COVID list
The Jaguars activated Beathard from the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, Mark Long of the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Beathard missed less than a week of practice while progressing through the league's COVID-19 protocols. He can now resume working as Jacksonville's third quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew.

Lands on COVID list
Beathard (undisclosed) was placed on the COVID-19 list Monday.
Analysis: It's unclear whether Beathard tested positive for the virus or was deemed a close contact, but he'll be unavailable until he clears the COVID protocols regardless. Jake Luton should work as Jacksonville's No. 3 quarterback in the meantime.

Signs with Jags
Beathard agreed Wednesday with the Jaguars on a two-year, $5 million contract, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Jacksonville now has Beathard, Gardner Minshew and Jake Luton on its roster, with another quarterback in Trevor Lawrence likely on tap in the 2021 NFL Draft. A Minshew trade could happen first, though the Jags aren't facing any real pressure from a cap/salary perspective. Beathard went 2-10 as a starter over his four years with the 49ers, completing 58.6 percent of his passes for yards per attempt, 18 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Starts two games in 2020
Beathard appeared in six games (two starts) with the 49ers in 2020, completing 66 of 104 pass attempts for 787 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also lost three fumbles and logged six carries for 28 yards.
Analysis: Beathard played like an efficient game manager when called upon by the 49ers, and he led the team to a win over the Cardinals in Week 16 before closing out the year with a narrow 26-23 loss to the Seahawks in Week 17. Now set to become an unrestricted free agent, Beathard should have displayed enough competence during his San Francisco tenure to compete for a backup role elsewhere in the league.

Manages 49ers to victory
Beathard completed 13 of 22 pass attempts for 182 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a Week 16 win over the Cardinals.
Analysis: Beathard was content to check down for much of the game and targeted his tight ends and backs on 17 of his attempts. Even so, he passed for three touchdowns of 21, nine and one yard -- two of which went to Kyle Juszczyk. Beathard played relatively mistake-free -- his only turnover came on a lost fumble -- and he is likely to draw another start in Week 17 against the Seahawks.

Named starting QB
Beathard was named the starting quarterback for Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Nick Mullens will require season-ending elbow surgery, opening the door for Beathard to make his 11th career start and his first of the season. Beathard entered the game in Mullens' place during last week's loss to the Cowboys, and he completed five of seven passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, a stat line that's slightly skewed by a 49-yard hail mary in the fourth quarter. Over 17 career games, Beathard sports a 1-9 record with a 57.8 completion percentage and 6.9 yards per target. He'll take…read more

Climbs depth chart due to injury
Beathard will be the backup to Nick Mullens for at least the next six weeks, as Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) will miss at least that long due to a high-ankle sprain, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Mullens will get first crack at filling in for Garoppolo, starting with Thursday's game against Green Bay. Beathard will wait in the wings should Mullens struggle, but considering Beathard has usurped Mullens as Garoppolo's backup as recently as earlier this season, the window is wide open for the Iowa product to get another shot under center if things start to go south for San Francisco's offense.

Likely reverting to backup role
Beathard is expected to be the backup quarterback Sunday versus the Rams with Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) reclaiming starting duties, Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee reports.
Analysis: Garoppolo was benched during this past Sunday's loss to the Dolphins, as he performed poorly and the game quickly got out of hand. Beathard entered in his place and completed nine of 18 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. Garoppolo is still dealing with an ankle injury, and that could've played a role in his disappointing outing, but coach Kyle Shanahan has no plans to bench him. Beathard has proven himself as the clear No. 2 quarterback ahead of Nick Mullens, so he'll be the next man up in…read more

Takes over as starter mid-game
Beathard filled in for a struggling Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) in the second half of Sunday's 43-17 loss to Miami. He completed nine of 18 pass attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown.
Analysis: Beathard has had to relieve a different struggling quarterback ahead of him on the depth chart for the second consecutive week. Unlike last week's late comeback attempt against the Eagles, the backup had a more pedestrian outing when given a full half to operate. Garoppolo clearly did not look right early on, and his injured ankle may have had a big part in why he performed so poorly. It would be a surprising turn of events if an official change was made with both players being healthy, so we…read more

Rises to second on depth chart
Beathard will serve as the 49ers' backup quarterback in Sunday's game against the Dolphins, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) is slated to return from a two-game absence to reclaim starting duties Week 5, but Beathard showed enough in relief of a struggling Nick Mullens in the 49ers' Week 4 loss to the Eagles to move up a rung on the depth chart. Making his second straight start, Mullens committed three turnovers against Philadelphia before being pulled in the fourth quarter in favor of Beathard, who proceeded to complete 14 of 19 attempts for 138 yards. Now that he's dropped behind Garoppolo…read more

Takes over mid-game
Beathard entered Sunday's 25-20 loss to the Eagles and completed 14 of 19 pass attempts for 138 yards.
Analysis: Sunday's starter (and primary backup) Nick Mullens struggled with turnovers in the second half and was benched for Beathard late in the fourth quarter. The third-string quarterback orchestrated two no-huddle drives that concluded with a Hail-Mary heave that would have clinched the victory had it not fallen incomplete. Beathard entered the contest with a 57 completion percentage and a 12:13 TD:INT for his career, but those stats came back in 2017-2018 when the 49ers had a far inferior offensive…read more

Clear No. 3 option
Beathard will be a healthy scratch for Sunday's game against the Jets, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Sunday will mark the second consecutive game for which Beathard will be inactive this season, signalling he's the clear third option on the depth chart. It's unlikely that the Iowa product will make an impact from a fantasy perspective, barring injuries, and Nick Mullens will continue to serve as the team's back up behind Jimmy Garoppolo.

Finishes third on depth chart
Beathard did not see the field while serving as the 49ers' third-string quarterback in 2019.
Analysis: San Francisco -- in unorthodox fashion -- decided to keep three quarterbacks on its 53-man roster after the team was unable to trade backups Nick Mullens and Beathard during the preseason. This move showed the confidence the coaching staff has in the 26-year-old's abilities as a signal caller. Beathard's 57.3 completion percentage and 12:13 TD:INT ratio came in less-than-ideal conditions, but he has shown to have accuracy on shorter pass attempts with some athleticism as a runner when called…read more
