Analysis: Per ESPN.com, Mahomes' extension is reportedly worth $450 million, while the injury guarantee in his deal is $140 million. Analysis: The initial report doesn't provide details beyond the length, but there's no doubt it will be the largest contract in NFL history for both total value and guaranteed money. Mahomes is entering his fourth pro season and will turn 25 in September.

Fifth-year option extended

Mahomes had his fifth-year option extended Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Analysis: There might not be a more obvious fifth-year extension in the history of the NFL than this one, with the unsurprising move keeping the Super Bowl MVP under contract with the Chiefs through the 2021 campaign. It seems entirely likely a historic multi-year contract is on the horizon, as GM Clark Hunt previously hinted that the team would focus on agreeing to a long-term extension with its star quarterback following the 2020 NFL Draft.

Extension imminent?

Chiefs general manager Clark Hunt suggested a possible extension for Mahomes could come following the 2020 NFL Draft, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.

Analysis: It's not particularly surprising the Chiefs want to lock up a long-term extension with their Super Bowl MVP and transcendent quarterback, but it should be telling Hunt is even mentioning a certain time frame. While making Mahomes' extension "a priority" after the draft seems reasonable, a likely lofty sticker price could slow the negotiations somewhat. The 24-year-old is not expected to hold out in any way regardless of what type of conversations occur throughout the rest of the offseason.

No offseason procedure expected

Coach Andy Reid relayed Tuesday that he doesn't believe Mahomes will require offseason surgery after dislocating his kneecap this past October, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports. "Right now he looks good," Reid said of the QB, who capped his 2019 season by earning Super Bowl LIV MVP honors.
