While it seems extremely unlikely that the Dolphins will deploy Laird as the lead back in 2020, the 24-year-old's solid performance down the stretch may very well secure him a rotational or depth role.

Another pedestrian outing
Laird rushed eight times for 17 yards during Sunday's 38-35 overtime win against the Bengals. He also caught his only target for one yard.
Analysis: Laird logged fewer touches than fellow rookie Myles Gaskin, who rushed 16 times for 55 yards and a touchdown, indicating that he may have bumped down to the No. 2 role on Miami's depth chart. Gaskin was carted off the field due to a left ankle injury in the fourth quarter Week 16, however, and if he were to miss any time, Laird could be in line to handle the bulk of the backfield reps during Week 17's finale against the Patriots.

Laird rushed 12 times for 46 yards and caught two of five targets for eight yards in Sunday's 36-20 loss to the Giants.
Analysis: Laird couldn't get much going in this one, as his most notable play resulted in a Giants safety after the 24-year-old running back was tackled in his own end zone. He operated in a near-even split with Myles Gaskin, who rushed nine times for 43 yards and added two catches for 29 yards. Expect the two running backs to remain in a timeshare against the generous Bengals run defense Week 16.

Laird rushed 15 times for 48 yards and caught four of five targets for 38 more yards in Sunday's 22-21 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Laird operated as Miami's featured back, but he finished with 17 fewer rushing yards than quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The man Fitzpatrick nicknamed "The intern" is a full-fledged employee now, having touched the ball 33 times in the past two weeks. Desperate owners could do worse than Laird against the Giants in Week 15.

Set for increased work
Laird is expected to see increased work out of the backfield after Kalen Ballage (Achilles) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Safid Dean of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Ballage sustained the injury during Sunday's win over the Eagles, and Laird subsequently led the backfield with 10 carries for five yards while catching four of five targets for 43 yards. The undrafted rookie ended up playing 43 offensive snaps in the contest, far outpacing next man up Myles Gaskin (16 snaps). The Jets' stout run defense presents a tough matchup for Week 14, but Laird could retain some value as a pass catcher with 12 receptions on 14 targets for 109 yards in the last four games.

Analysis: Laird didn't see much volume as a receiver during Sunday's blowout loss, but he did show some explosiveness in very limited work as a rusher. Analysis: Laird was effectively utilized as an aerial complement to Kalen Ballage during Sunday's divisional loss.
