Dropped by Green Bay
The Packers waived Eason on Monday.
Analysis: Eason was picked up by the Packers less than two weeks ago, but it now appears that the team has decided to part ways with the Washington product. With Eason off the roster, Green Bay's No. 2 quarterback spot is expected to be claimed by either Sean Clifford or Michael Pratt.

Signing with Green Bay
Eason signed a one-year deal with the Packers on Tuesday.
Analysis: Eason will join Green Bay after spending time on both the Giants' practice squad and active roster last season. The 26-year-old will now spend the summer competing for the backup spot behind Jordan Love.

Serving as QB3 on Sunday
Eason (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Eagles, but will serve as the team's emergency quarterback, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: Eason was signed to the Giants' active roster Saturday after joining the team's practice squad Thursday. He'll be padded up for New York's regular-season finale and will only see the field if Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito sustain injuries.

The Giants signed Eason to their active roster Saturday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.

Back with Giants' practice squad
The Giants signed Eason to their practice squad Thursday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The Giants just cut Eason from their practice squad in December, but with Tyrod Taylor now tending to a back injury, they've decided to bring Eason back on board as an insurance policy at quarterback. If Taylor is able to play in Week 18, it's unlikely that Eason will be active versus the Eagles.

Loses roster spot
Eason was waived by the Panthers on Thursday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Eason inked a reserve/future contract with the team in January, but it appears his second stint with Carolina has come to an end. A fourth-round selection by the Colts in the 2020 Draft, Eason also has spent time with the Seahawks and 49ers. He'll now need to find a new opportunity.

Headed to Carolina
The Panthers signed Eason to a reserve/future contract Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Eason was signed to the Panthers' practice squad after being cut by the Seahawks ahead of the initial 53-man roster deadline. He was quickly thrust into backup duties behind PJ Walker after Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold suffered ankle injuries, but Eason was ultimately cut following Darnold's return from injured reserve. Cut from Panthers' practice squad
Eason was let go from the Panthers' practice squad Monday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Analysis: With Sam Darnold (ankle) coming off injured reserve, Eason was the odd man out in the Panthers' quarterback room, getting cut Monday. The 24-year-old joined Carolina's practice unit in late August and was elevated to serve as a backup on two occasions this season and appeared in the Panthers' Week 6 loss to the Rams, passing for 59 yards and an interception after he entered the contest for an injured PJ Walker. Heads back to practice squad
Eason reverted to the Panthers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: With starter Baker Mayfield (ankle) still out, Eason was elevated ahead of Sunday's win over the Buccaneers to serve as Carolina's No. 2 quarterback behind PJ Walker. However, the practice-squad signal-caller did not play as Walker went 16-for-22 passing for 177 yards and two touchdowns against Tampa Bay. Eason will now be eligible for just one more activation on game day while with the Panthers this season.

Likely No. 2 QB on Sunday
Eason was elevated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster Saturday, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.
Analysis: With Baker Mayfield (ankle) doubtful to face Tampa Bay and Sam Darnold (ankle) still out of action, Eason will likely serve as the backup to PJ Walker for at least one more game. Eason saw his first action of the season last week against the Rams after Walker left with a neck injury, and the former completed three of five passes for 59 yards and an interception.

Forced into action against Rams
Eason completed three of five passes for 59 yards and an interception in Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Rams.
Analysis: P.J. Walker left the game in the second half with a neck injury, leaving Eason as the last quarterback available for the Panthers. The 24-year-old was a fourth-round pick of the Colts in the 2020 NFL Draft and had only five career pass attempts coming into this week, but with Baker Mayfield (ankle) and Sam Darnold (ankle) also injured, Eason could find himself getting the start for Carolina in Week 7 against Tampa Bay.

Cut by Seattle
Eason was waived by Seattle on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Eason's only chance at making the 53-man roster would be if the team opted to go with three quarterbacks. However, they will stick with just Geno Smith and Drew Lock on the final roster. Assuming Eason goes unclaimed on waivers, he'll likely be signed to the team's practice squad.

Ineffective in preseason matchup
Eason completed 17 of 35 passes for 141 yards and no touchdowns in Thursday's 27-11 preseason loss to the Bears. He also rushed twice for one yard.
Analysis: Eason struggled to get much rolling on offense in his first action of the preseason, as he averaged four yards per pass attempt and completed less than half of his passes. Both Geno Smith (knee) and Drew Lock (COVID-19) are battling ailments right now, but as long as both are cleared before Week 1, Eason is a long shot to make the 53-man roster.

Eason is expected to play in Thursday's preseason game against the Bears with Drew Lock having been ruled out after testing positive for COVID-19, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.

Eason isn't included in the competition, but he'll get a chance to showcase his skills during Thursday's exhibition matchup with one less signal-caller available. Likely aiming for backup duties
Eason is expected to compete for the backup quarterback job after Seattle didn't draft a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The Washington product was picked by the Colts in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, but he has thrown just five regular-season passes. Drew Lock and Geno Smith are expected to be the main candidates for the starting quarterback job, and Eason likely would need to overperform to have a true shot at the starting gig. Not playing against Green Bay
Eason (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Packers.

Eason will be active Sunday against the Jaguars.
Analysis: Eason was claimed off waivers from the Colts on Oct. 20. He was inactive in Monday's contest against the Saints, but will now serve as Geno Smith's backup. Eason replaced an injured Carson Wentz in Week 2 against the Rams and completed two of five passes for 25 yards and an interception.

Inactive Monday
Eason will be inactive Monday against the Saints.
Analysis: Eason was just claimed off waivers from the Colts on Oct. 20. He's an option to be the backup to Geno Smith while Russell Wilson (finger) is out, but he's likely not familiar enough with the playbook at this point to step up if something were to happen to Smith. The Seahawks claimed Eason off waivers from the Colts on Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: After losing his spot in Indianapolis' quarterback room when Sam Ehlinger (knee) was reinstated from injured reserve Tuesday, Eason quickly found a new home in the Pacific Northwest. At least for the time being, Eason will slot in as the No. 2 option on the depth chart behind Geno Smith, though Jake Luton could be elevated from the practice squad ahead of Monday's game against the Saints if the coaching staff wants to give Eason more time to get familiar with the playbook. Eason was waived by the Colts on Tuesday, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.
Analysis: Eason fell behind Brett Hundley in the Colts' pecking order and has now lost his roster spot altogether with Sam Ehlinger (knee) being activated off injured reserve. Eason (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Monday at Baltimore.
Analysis: Eason was active but didn't play in the season opener, but when pressed into action for an injured Carson Wentz in Week 2, he didn't fare well, completing two of five passes for 25 yards and one interception. Wentz hasn't missed any game action in the meantime, but Brett Hundley and not Eason has been the active backup QB for what is now three contests in a row. Demotion may be on horizon
The Colts have named Brett Hundley as the backup quarterback behind Carson Wentz for Sunday's game against the Dolphins, likely leaving Eason as a healthy inactive for that contest, Mike Wells of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Hundley doesn't currently possess a spot on the 53-man roster, but the Colts will elevate him from the practice squad for the second straight week to provide a more experienced option behind the banged-up Wentz, who sprained both of his ankles Week 2. Backup role in doubt
Colts head coach Frank Reich would not say whether Eason or Brett Hundley would start if Carson Wentz (ankles) is unable to play Sunday against Tennessee, ESPN 1075.5 FM Indianapolis reports. Wentz will be a game-time decision after practicing Friday.
Analysis: Brett Hundley took the majority of snaps earlier in the week when Wentz missed practice, suggesting that Hundley would get the start if Wentz can't play. Either way, this isn't a show of confidence in Eason as he was the backup before the regular season began, but he threw a key interception late in last week's game in relief of Wentz.

No lock to start if Wentz sits
Eason saw fewer reps with the Colts' first-team offense than practice squad quarterback Brett Hundley at Wednesday's practice, which could suggest the latter is the top candidate to start Sunday's game in Tennessee if Carson Wentz (ankles) is inactive, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Wentz didn't practice Wednesday after spraining both of his ankles in last week's loss to the Rams, which doesn't inspire much early confidence about his availability for the Week 3 matchup. Even though Eason already possesses a spot on the 40-man roster and has recent draft capital (2020 fourth-round selection) working in his favor, head coach Frank Reich may favor the experience that Hundley -- who has appeared in 18 games through seven professional seasons -- offers at the position. Likely next man up
Eason is the favorite to start Sunday's game against the Titans if Carson Wentz (ankles) is unable to suit up, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Head coach Frank Reich declined to confirm Wednesday whether Eason or practice squad member Brett Hundley would start if Wentz -- who is nursing sprains in both ankles -- is ultimately ruled out Week 3. Hundley (nine career starts) boasts more experience than Eason, who looked overwhelmed in emergency duty against the Rams last week. However, Bowen notes that the 2020 fourth-round pick is still the likely favorite for a spot start, if needed.

Ineffective in emergency duty
Eason entered Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Rams for Carson Wentz (ankle) with 2:23 remaining and completed two of five passes for 25 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
Analysis: The second-year signal-caller drew the proverbial short straw for Sunday's emergency duty, coming into the contest with the game on the line against a ferocious defense. Eason promptly was intercepted on his second pass attempt to short-circuit what would be the Colts' last realistic opportunity to drive for at least a tie, and his only two completions subsequently came against an extreme prevent defense with under 30 seconds remaining and deep in his own territory. Will start if Wentz can't
Eason will be the Week 1 starting quarterback if Carson Wentz (foot) isn't cleared to play, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Eason was competing with Sam Ehlinger, who now is expected to miss at least a month with an ACL sprain. However, Wentz returned to practice this past week and seems to be gearing up for the opener, so the battle between Eason and Ehlinger had lost some of its intrigue even before the injury.

Seems set for No. 2 role
Eason completed 10 of 14 passes for 74 yards in Friday's preseason win over the Lions.
Analysis: He was under center for the Colts' first three drives and led them to two field goals, although one of those possessions started at the Detroit 18-yard line. The second-year QB didn't exactly stretch the field, but with Carson Wentz looking increasingly likely to be ready for Week 1 against Seattle, Eason seems locked into the No. 2 role -- particularly after Sam Ehlinger left Friday's game with a knee injury.

Starting Friday night
Eason will start at quarterback in Friday's preseason game against Detroit, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Analysis: Head coach Frank Reich said the Colts will rest most of their starters, though not necessarily all of them. Eason has been viewed as a potential Week 1 starter ever since Carson Wentz had foot surgery, but the former Eagle now appears on track for the season opener. If nothing else, Eason still is the favorite for the backup job, as Sam Ehlinger has tossed three interceptions in two preseason games.

Gets turn as backup to Ehlinger
Eason was 16-for-27 passing for 132 yards and notched a three-yard carry during Saturday's preseason win in Minnesota.
Analysis: After Eason started preseason Week 1 ahead of Sam Ehlinger, the tables turned Saturday, with the latter getting the first five possessions of the game. Ehlinger has been turnover prone through two exhibitions -- three interceptions versus no touchdowns -- but he's also turned 10 rushes into 41 yards. Eason got the start against the Panthers on Sunday, completing 15 of 21 pass attempts for 183 yards in a 21-18 preseason victory.
Analysis: With Carson Wentz' (foot) availability in question for the start of the 2021 season, Eason and rookie Sam Ehlinger will compete for the Colts' No. 1 quarterback position (assuming no other candidates are brought in). The former appears to have gotten the early leg up based on his ability to protect the ball and complete the necessary passes to move the chains. Getting starting nod Sunday
Coach Frank Reich said Eason will start Sunday's preseason game against the Panthers, when he's likely to see action into the second quarter, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
Analysis: Once Carson Wentz (foot) went under the knife, Eason received most of the first-team reps before yielding about half of them to rookie Sam Ehlinger in recent practices. Still, Eason is getting the first chance to be under center Saturday before Ehlinger has that same opportunity in preseason Week 2 at Minnesota. Meanwhile, Bremer also notes that Eason is still expected to start Sunday's preseason opener against the Panthers and log first-team work in that contest. Ample preseason action on deck
Coach Frank Reich said "[Eason is] probably going to play a lot more than Carson [Wentz] would" this preseason, Kevin Hickey of USA Today reports.
Analysis: The majority of Indianapolis' starters will likely only handle sparse preseason snaps in order to avoid potential injuries, but with Wentz looking at a 5-to-12 week recovery timetable after undergoing foot surgery, Eason will need all the game reps he can get. Coach Frank Reich indicated that Eason is currently expected to play about two quarters in the Colts' preseason opener versus the Panthers on Aug. 15, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: With Carson Wentz a candidate to miss time early on this season due to a foot procedure, Eason has been thrust into the spotlight and is currently atop the Colts' quarterback depth chart. Will fill in for Wentz
With Carson Wentz slated to undergo a foot procedure, Eason is in line to handle the Colts' starting QB duties for the time being, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Wentz will miss an estimated 5-to-12 weeks. Under that broad timeline, there's the distinct possibility that Eason will be the Colts' starting signal-caller Week 1. With that in mind, coach Frank Reich indicated that the "job is Jacob's right now...and he's gotta earn it. But he's in the driver's seat." Looks set for backup QB role
Eason is the favorite to be the backup to Carson Wentz even after the Colts took Sam Ehlinger in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, ESPN 107.5 FM Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Eason didn't play a snap in a regular-season game during his rookie 2020 campaign, but the Colts had enough faith in him not to sign a veteran after Jacoby Brissett, last year's backup, left in free agency. Eason isn't likely to get on the field much this season barring an injury to Carson Wentz, however.

Analysis: Eason didn't get an opportunity to make his NFL debut during his rookie season in 2020, but with Philip Rivers electing to retire and with Jacoby Brissett set for free agency, the young signal-caller should at the very least be in strong position to open 2021 as the No. 2 option on the depth chart behind the newly acquired Carson Wentz. The 23-year-old will look to impress in OTAs, training camp and the preseason to ensure he maintains his placement on the depth chart.

Opportunity awaits for 2021?
Eason, who did not suit up for the Colts as a rookie in 2020, could see more opportunities in 2021 following Philip Rivers' decision to retire.
Analysis: Eason didn't see any work in Indianapolis as a rookie, as Jacoby Brissett worked as the second-string option behind a healthy Rivers all season. Brissett is additionally scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, so at least for the meantime, Eason appears to have a realistic path to snaps in his sophomore season. Of course, it should be expected that the Colts' quarterback room will see additions this offseason, whether through the 2021 NFL Draft or free agency.

Inactive for season opener
Eason (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.
Analysis: Eason's inactive status is merely confirmation that he'll begin the season as Indianapolis' No. 3 quarterback. Unless one of Philip Rivers or Jacoby Brissett misses time with an injury, Eason will likely remain a fixture on the inactive list throughout his rookie season.
