Let go from Bolts' practice squad
The Chargers cut Spiller from their practice squad Friday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Spiller was added to the Chargers' practice squad Wednesday after he was unable to make the 53-man roster at the end of training camp. The 2022 fourth-round pick will now look to catch on with a team in need of backfield depth. Spiller had 37 carries for 96 yards and six catches for 34 yards across nine regular-season games for the Chargers in 2023.

Signed to Bolts' practice squad
Spiller signed with the Chargers' practice squad Wednesday.
Analysis: Spiller was the odd-man out as the Chargers opted for Kimani Vidal and Jaret Patterson on the 53-man roster as the depth running backs behind Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins. Rather than keep Spiller as the fifth running back, the Chargers instead claimed Hassan Haskins off waivers after he was let go by the Titans on Tuesday. Spiller will stick around with the Bolts on the practice squad, and the 2022 fourth-round pick should be a top candidate to be elevated for game day if any of the five…read more

Let go by Chargers
The Chargers are slated to waive Spiller, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The 2022 fourth-rounder had been in contention with Kimani Vidal, Jaret Patterson and Elijah Dotson for a depth role in the backfield behind Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins, but Spiller is the odd man out ahead of Week 1. Once this week's cut-down dust settles, Spiller should either find his way on to another team's roster or end up with a practice squad slot.

Competing for No. 3 RB role
Spiller is slated to compete with rookie sixth-round pick Kimani Vidal for the No. 3 running back job behind Gus Edwards (undisclosed) and J.K. Dobbins (Achilles) during training camp, Alexander Insdorf of BoltBeat.com reports.
Analysis: Spiller, a 2022 fourth-round pick, is averaging just 2.5 YPC on 55 rush attempts across two seasons in the NFL, so he'll likely need to take a big step forward this offseason in order to earn a notable backfield role. Neither of Edwards nor Dobbins are a lock to stay healthy and play a full 17-game slate this season, though the former did accomplish that in 2023 with Baltimore, making the Chargers' third running back spot a position that could eventually hold fantasy value. Plus, new offensive…read more

Not playing in season finale
Spiller (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's Week 18 game against the Chiefs.
Analysis: Spiller had seen his role increase a bit over the past four weeks after regularly logging DNP-CDs earlier in the campaign, but he's back to being held out for the Chargers' final game of the campaign. The running back will thus finish his second NFL season with 37 carries for 96 yards and six catches on six targets for 34 yards over nine contests. Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley will man the backfield for Los Angeles on Sunday.

Does little in loss
Spiller lost a yard on his lone carry and caught both of his targets for 10 yards in the 16-9 loss to the Broncos on Sunday.
Analysis: The Chargers struggled to get anything going on the ground as they averaged just 86 rushing yards on 24 carries across seven different ballcarriers. Spiller appears to have displaced Joshua Kelley as the team's No. 2 back behind Austin Ekeler considering Spiller played 12 snaps to Kelley's six, but the increase in playing time hasn't yielded much production for the 2022 fourth-round pick.

Back to lackluster workload
Spiller tallied two carries for one yard and also caught his lone target for four yards in Saturday's 24-22 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: It wasn't clear if Spiller had overtaken nominal starting running back Austin Ekeler in last Thursday's blowout loss to the Raiders, or if the dramatic upswing in playing time was due to the lopsided nature of the game. Saturday's outing seemed to confirm the second-year back is simply a change-of-pace option moving forward as he played just 17 offensive snaps, far fewer than Ekeler's 45. With the Chargers officially out of playoff contention, they could cede more playing to the 2022…read more

Serves as lead back Thursday
Spiller rushed 16 times for 50 yards in the Chargers' 63-21 loss to the Raiders on Thursday night.
Analysis: Head coach Brandon Staley had alluded to the Chargers' ground attack evolving into a more competitive scenario prior to Week 14, but Austin Ekeler had remained the clear lead back in Los Angeles' loss to the Broncos on Sunday. However, that changed drastically in Thursday's lopsided contest, with Spiller outpacing Ekeler by 11 carries. Spiller wasn't able to do much with the opportunity, however, and given he saw 16 rush attempts, the highly unusual game script can't really be blamed. With the…read more

Increased production in loss
Spiller recorded six carries for 19 yards in Sunday's 24-7 loss to the Broncos.
Analysis: Spiller had a season high in rushing yards and attempts, and out-snapped second-string running back Joshua Kelley by five. Considering the 22-year-old has only played in six games to date, it's unclear if the additional workload will be permanent moving forward, or just a one-week oddity. With Justin Herbert (finger) done for the season, the Chargers could experiment with the backfield in a variety of ways, but it seems unlikely Spiller will outright displace starting running back Austin Ekeler…read more

Active versus Broncos
Spiller is active for Sunday's game against the Broncos.
Analysis: Spiller has been a regular healthy scratch of late, but he'll be in uniform and has a chance to see some touches versus Denver, as the Chargers look for a potential spark in their ground game. Though Austin Ekeler remains in line to start, Joshua Kelley and Spiller are also expected to see work in the team's Week 14 backfield, with Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggesting that Los Angeles may employ a 'hot hand' approach with its running backs Sunday.

Inactive versus Ravens
Spiller (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Ravens.
Analysis: Spiller wasn't listed on the Chargers' Week 12 injury report. With Elijah Dotson also a healthy scratch Sunday night, the Chargers will roll with a backfield featuring Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley.

Good to go for Week 12
Spiller (illness) isn't listed on the Week 12 injury report ahead of Sunday's game against the Ravens.
Analysis: Spiller missed Week 11's date with the Packers. The Chargers' No. 3 running back, Spiller has 12 carries for 27 scoreless yards on the season. He's reeled in all three of his pass-game targets for 15 yards.

Missing Week 11
Spiller (illness) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: The Chargers originally listed Spiller as questionable for Week 11 after he recorded a DNP at Friday's practice, and it now seems as if the second-year running back won't be well enough to suit up Sunday. Spiller has played a minimal role in Los Angeles' offense thus far, recording 47 total yards on 15 touches.

Lands on injury report
Spiller (illness) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers.
Analysis: Spiller popped up on Los Angeles' injury report after he didn't participate in Friday's practice, and he seems to be dealing with an illness that could hold him out of Sunday's contest. The second-year running back has appeared in only five games for the Chargers this season, recording 27 rushing yards on 12 attempts.

Inactive versus Jets
Spiller (coach's decision) is inactive for Monday night's game against the Jets.
Analysis: With Elijah Dotson also inactive Monday, the Chargers will proceed with a Week 9 backfield comprised of Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley. In five games this season, Spiller has logged 12 carries for 27 yards and three catches for 20 yards.

Four touches in win
Spiller rushed three times for three yards while securing his lone target for five yards in Sunday's 30-13 win over the Bears.
Analysis: Spiller played just eight of the Chargers 69 offensive snaps Sunday, operating as the team's No. 3 running back behind Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley. With such limited usage, Spiller will remain far off the fantasy radar when the Chargers visit the Jets in Week 9.

Hardly plays in loss
Spiller carried the ball once for two yards in the 20-17 loss to the Cowboys on Monday.
Analysis: Spiller's lone touch came in the first half as the Chargers predictably shifted back to using Austin Ekeler, now healthy, as the primary option out of the backfield. Joshua Kelley returned to his usual role as the team's backup, meaning Spiller, who saw three total offensive snaps Monday, is essentially out of the fantasy picture.

Playing time secured
Spiller carried the ball five times for 12 yards and also caught both of his receptions for 15 yards in the 24-17 win over the Raiders on Sunday.
Analysis: At this point, it's clear Spiller has surpassed Elijah Dotson as the team's No. 3 running back behind the injured Austin Ekeler (ankle) and Joshua Kelley. With Ekeler likely to return following the Chargers' Week 5 bye, Spiller likely falls out of fantasy relevance in all but the deepest of leagues.

Sees second-string snaps in win
Spiller carried the ball twice for seven yards in the 28-24 win over the Vikings on Sunday.
Analysis: Spiller wound up playing 16 snaps compared to Elijah Dotson's one, so for at least one game, it appears as if the 2022 fourth-round pick might have moved up the depth chart somewhat. Austin Ekeler (ankle) seems like he could be closer to returning, which would in turn bump Joshua Kelley and everyone else down a peg in terms of playing time.

Hardly plays in loss
Spiller carried the ball once for three yards in Sunday's 27-24 overtime loss to the Titans.
Analysis: With Austin Ekeler (ankle) out, the Chargers relied heavily on Joshua Kelley (54 snaps) and mixed in Elijah Dotson (nine snaps), with Spiller tallying just four. At this point, it appears as if the 2022 fourth-round pick has been completely cast aside, especially considering he was a healthy scratch in Week 1.

Limited to 14 yards
Spiller took five carries for 14 yards in Friday's 23-12 preseason win over San Francisco.
Analysis: Spiller was the second RB into the game, after Joshua Kelley ran for a 75-yard TD on the second drive. While he didn't do much in the preseason finale, Spiller did take 10 carries for 54 yards over the first two week of the exhibition schedule and seems more likely than not to survive upcoming roster cuts. Solid again with limited touches
Spiller carried the ball five times for 27 yards in Sunday's preseason loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Joshua Kelley also got five touches but managed only 13 yards with them -- a mark that Spiller topped in one play, an 18-yard dash up the middle during a two-minute drill at the end of the first half that set up the Chargers' first TD of the night. The two backs could continue jockeying for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Austin Ekeler right up until the Week 1 kickoff, but at the moment, the momentum in the battle seems to swinging toward Spiller.

Solid with seven touches Saturday
Spiller rushed five times for 27 yards and brought in both targets for 11 yards in the Chargers' 34-17 preseason win over the Rams on Saturday night.
Analysis: The 2022 fourth-round pick was the second running back to receive a touch behind Joshua Kelley, with Spiller entering on the second possession of the game. Kelley, his primary competition for the No. 2 running back role, logged four more carries and gained twice as many rushing yards, but Spiller helped offset that to an extent with his pair of receptions. The job battle between the two will continue to unfold during a preseason home matchup against the Saints on Sunday night, Aug. 20.

Disappointing rookie season
Spiller finished the 2022-23 season with just 41 yards on 18 carries and caught all three of his targets for 13 yards.
Analysis: Spiller appeared in just six games during his rookie season, as he was the odd-man out in the Chargers' backfield. The rookie running back was unable to carve himself a consistent role on offense and was repeatedly a healthy scratch. With Sony Michel now gone, Spiller will look to live up to his status as a fourth-round pick and will compete with Joshua Kelley for a more prominent role next season.

Active but absent
Spiller was active for Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Raiders, but did not record a snap.
Analysis: Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley wound up as the only two running backs to take a snap in Sunday's loss. At this point, it's obvious the rookie's role has completely evaporated with the return of Kelley, and that's unlikely to change with the Chargers still in playoff contention.

Role diminished in win
Spiller carried the ball two times for three yards while catching his only target for two yards Sunday in the 25-24 win against the Cardinals.
Analysis: Spiller saw his usage drop compared to the past three weeks, as he was outplayed by Joshua Kelley who made his return to action after missing four games with a sprained MCL. Kelley seemed to reestablish himself as the primary backup behind Austin Ekeler, playing 14 snaps compared to just eight snaps from the rookie running back. Even with a favorable matchup against the Raiders next week, Spiller doesn't have much fantasy value save for the deepest of leagues.

Remains primary backup
Spiller tallied four carries for 11 yards and also caught both of his targets for an additional 11 yards in Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Chiefs.
Analysis: Sunday marked the biggest disparity in the platoon backup RB position as Spiller out-snapped Sony Michel 16-5, easily outgaining the veteran for the third straight game. The rookie hasn't done a whole lot with the extra opportunities, but it's likely he'll still be a factor when Joshua Kelley (knee) eventually returns off injured reserve.

Does almost nothing in loss
Spiller carried the ball four times for three yards in Sunday's 22-16 loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: Spiller once again out-snapped veteran Sony Michel, but neither back was able to do much in their limited opportunities. Nominal No. 2 back Joshua Kelley (knee) is expected to return in the coming weeks, which could relegate Spiller further down the depth chart. The rookie has a combined 12 carries for 27 yards over the last three games in Kelley's absence.

Just seven carries in win
Spiller carried the ball seven times for 29 yards in Sunday's 20-17 win over the Falcons.
Analysis: With the Chargers missing both of their top pass catchers, the team resorted to a bit of an unorthodox offense that saw Justin Herbert attempt a plethora of passes while Austin Ekeler still accounted for his usual 20 to 25 touches. That meant Spiller saw a bit less work than the platooned backup role tends to get, but it is notable the rookie out-snapped the veteran Sony Michel. Does nothing in first game
Spiller lost five yards in his only carry of Sunday's 37-23 blowout loss to the Seahawks.
Analysis: The rookie made his NFL debut Sunday with Joshua Kelley (knee) set to miss at least four games, but the Chargers fell behind by three scores in the first quarter, which limited any opportunities for the likes of Spiller or Sony Michel. The rookie does have draft pedigree relative to Michel and also profiles as a better receiving target out of the backfield, but given the 21-year-old's much-maligned preseason and subsequent multiple healthy scratches to begin the 2022 campaign, it's clear…read more

Pro debut imminent
Coach Brandon Staley said Friday that Spiller is slated to be active Sunday versus the Seahawks, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The development comes on the heels of primary reserve running back Joshua Kelley sustaining an MCL sprain Monday against the Broncos. With Kelley out this weekend and potentially beyond, Spiller is destined to make his NFL debut Sunday, though starter Austin Ekeler and veteran Sony Michel likely will handle most of the backfield reps. If Spiller sees the field, the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder could get work as both a runner and pass catcher.

Healthy scratch to start career
Spiller (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's Week 1 matchup against the Raiders, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: The rookie overcame a preseason ankle injury by returning to practice as a full participant this past week, but the Chargers will still have Spiller in street clothes for the season-opening divisional clash. Recent veteran addition Sony Michel will serve as the No. 3 running back behind the top backfield duo of Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley against Las Vegas.

Practicing fully
Spiller (ankle) was a full participant in practice Wednesday.
Analysis: The rookie fourth-round pick is thus slated to be available for the Chargers' season opener against the Raiders, but as long as undisputed top back Austin Ekeler remains healthy, Spiller might have only a small role on offense. The Chargers also have Joshua Kelley and Sony Michel on hand as candidates to see complementary snaps and touches behind Ekeler.

Returns from ankle sprain
Spiller (ankle) returned to practice Tuesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The rookie was out for less than two weeks after spraining his ankle in the Chargers' second preseason game. He may be only third or fourth on the depth chart to start the year, but it at least appears he'll be available if the Chargers need him, which could be fairly soon given that the other guys (Joshua Kelley, Larry Rountree) jostling for backup roles behind Austin Ekeler were unimpressive last year.

Considered week-to-week
Spiller (ankle) is considered week-to-week, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: He won't play in the Chargers' final preseason game and can be considered questionable for Week 1 against the Raiders. Even if he gets healthy, it isn't clear Spiller will have a role in the season opener, as he ran behind Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree this preseason. The rookie fourth-round pick is capable of moving ahead of those players as the year progresses, but this ankle injury probably ends any chance Spiller will do it before Week 1.

Spiller suffered an ankle injury in Saturday's preseason game against the Cowboys and is questionable to return.
Analysis: Spiller was the third back to earn a carry for the Chargers, behind both Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree. Garners 44 total yards in debut
Spiller rushed 10 times for 34 yards and brought in his only target for 10 yards in the Chargers' 29-22 preseason loss to the Rams on Saturday night.
Analysis: The rookie fourth-round pick saw his first carry with 4:39 remaining in the first half as the third running back in, and he ended up pacing the Chargers in carries and rushing yards. While Spiller wasn't exactly efficient on the ground, he was also playing behind an assortment of second- and third-team offensive linemen. Working with backups
Spiller has primarily worked with the second- and third-team offenses at training camp, but Daniel Popper of The Athletic notes that the rookie's "physicality is starting to pop" now that the Chargers have started padded practices.
Analysis: The rookie fourth-round pick will need more than brute strength and determination to earn a role, but those traits certainly help when competing for part-time work behind a smaller, versatile back like Chargers starter Austin Ekeler. While previous draft picks Joshua Kelley (2020 fourth-round choice) and Larry Rountree (2021 sixth-round choice) failed to take advantage of similar opportunities the past two years, Spiller still has time to make an impression this summer.
