Three catches sans Njoku
Akins secured three of four targets for 30 yards in the Browns' 21-7 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday.
Analysis: Akins was a distant second in receptions and receiving yards behind Jerry Jeudy on a day when the Browns were afflicted with mostly ineffective quarterback play. The veteran tight end did do a serviceable job while drawing the start in place of the absent David Njoku (hamstring), but Akins holds only modest fantasy value even if he remains in the top role for a Week 16 road matchup against the Bengals.

Likely to start at tight end
Akins is expected to start at tight end in Sunday's game against the Chiefs with David Njoku (hamstring) inactive for the contest, Kelsey Russo of the Browns' official site reports.
Analysis: Akins previously helped fill in for Njoku from Weeks 2 through 4 while the latter was sidelined with a high-ankle sprain and compiled a 6-49-0 receiving line on 10 targets over that span. While that level of production wasn't particularly noteworthy, all three of those outings came while Deshaun Watson (Achilles) served as the Browns' quarterback, so Akins could have a better opportunity to deliver fantasy value this time around while Cleveland's passing attack has taken off under the…read more

Little impact in loss
Akins did not catch his lone target in Monday's 41-32 loss to Denver in Week 13.
Analysis: Like many of Cleveland's receivers, Akins has experienced an uptick in activity and production with Jameis Winston at quarterback. The tight end had a limited role Monday however, even though Winston attempted 58 passes and David Njoku had a team-high 17 targets. Winston's not afraid to spread the ball around, so Akins, who averaged four targets over the three preceding games, could get some looks in Week 14 against the Steelers.

Three catches in win
Akins caught three of four targets for 38 yards in Thursday's 24-19 win over Pittsburgh in Week 12.
Analysis: Akins continued a renaissance in a Jameis Winston-led offense. The outing was his fourth in the last five games in which he was targeted four times. The lone blemish Thursday was a drop on a play that looked like he had a clear path to the end zone if he secured the ball. David Njoku remains the clear No. 1 at tight end, but he had an off night in the wind and snow of Cleveland, leading him to haul in just one of his five targets.

Four targets in loss
Akins caught one of four targets for 19 yards in Sunday's 35-14 loss to the Saints in Week 11.
Analysis: Akins, who had two red-zone targets, was caught up in an offense that finished with 47 passing attempts. It was the third consecutive week the Browns have aired it out more than 40 times and the second straight week with four targets for Akins, who has four red-zone targets this season. He's not about to challenge the team's top targets, but all that volume could lead to a red-zone score.

Three catches in loss
Akins caught three of four targets for 32 yards in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the Chargers.
Analysis: After a one-target performance a week ago, Akins saw a modest increase in volume Sunday. He was on the field for 25 snaps, the most he's seen since David Njoku returned from injury, but there's no reason to believe the boost is sustainable. The loss dropped the Browns to 2-7 as they enter a bye week, and the club may start preparing for 2025 by dealing veterans ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. One target in win
Akins failed to catch his lone target in Sunday's 29-24 win over the Ravens in Week 8.
Analysis: Akins, who played 15 snaps (22 percent share), had a bit role in Cleveland's first game following the season-ending Achilles injury suffered by quarterback Deshaun Watson. The tight end's usage had more to do with David Njoku being fully healthy than which quarterback was in the game, but Week 8 was a significant drop-off for Akins, who had four catches for 42 yards last week, including a 21-yard reception. Four catches in loss
Akins caught all four targets for a season-high 42 yards in Sunday's 21-14 loss to the Bengals in Week 7.
Analysis: Cleveland's tight ends had a big day in the first game after the organization traded Amari Cooper to the Bills. Akins and starter David Njoku combined for 18 targets, the most for the tight end position this season. In a related note that impacts all receivers, quarterbacks Deshaun Watson (Achilles) and Dorian Thompson-Robinson (finger) were removed from the game, leaving Jameis Winston to close out the contest. Five snaps in loss
Akins was untargeted over five snaps in Sunday's 20-16 loss to Philadelphia in Week 6.
Analysis: David Njoku finally stayed healthy for a full game, an event that was expected to limit Akins' involvement, but his severely reduced snap count was surprising. Geoff Swaim, a free agent that was added to the practice squad after Week 1 and eventually signed to the active roster, had the second-most snaps (19) among Cleveland tight ends behind Njoku's 42.

Resuming backup role
Akins will be the top backup in Sunday's game against the Eagles, as starter David Njoku (knee, ankle) no longer has an injury designation on the Browns' injury report.
Analysis: Njoku, who aggravated an ankle injury and sustained a knee injury last week and has yet to play a complete game in 2024, will resume his normal role as Cleveland's top tight end. When Njoku's been unavailable, Akins has been forced into a larger role, including that of the top tight end in three of five games thus far, and has led the team's tight ends in snaps in four of five games. Akins has 12 catches on 17 targets for 98 yards and a touchdown.

Grabs first TD since 2022
Akins caught three of three targets for 22 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 34-13 loss to the Commanders in Week 5.
Analysis: Akins caught a 10-yard, garbage-time touchdown to wrap up Cleveland's scoring, his first touchdown catch since 2022 when he was with the Texans. It was his first red-zone look of the season. As anticipated, Akins' playing time initially took a hit (20 snaps) with the return of David Njoku, but Njoku left the game with a knee injury and is expected to undergo an MRI, per Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com. Akins could be headed for a bigger role again in Week 6 against the Eagles.

Loses playing time in Week 4
Akins caught one of two targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Raiders.
Analysis: Akins filled in for starter David Njoku (ankle) for a third consecutive game, but he saw his fewest snaps of any of those contests. Blake Whiteheart (21 snaps) and Geoff Swaim (24) shared the load at tight end Sunday. Akins has nine receptions on 14 targets for 76 yards over four games this season.

Likely to start again in Week 4
Akins again is expected to operate as Cleveland's top tight end Sunday against the Raiders, as David Njoku (ankle) has been ruled out for a third consecutive game.
Analysis: Akins set season bests in last week's loss to the Giants, working 67 percent of the offensive snaps into a 4-29-0 line on seven targets. The veteran tight end has eight catches for 66 scoreless yards on 12 targets through three games but hasn't shown much of a ceiling for fantasy purposes. He looks like a touchdown-or-bust fantasy bet versus Las Vegas.

Four catches in Week 3 loss
Akins caught four of seven targets for 29 yards in Sunday's 21-15 loss to the Giants.
Analysis: Akins tied Jerry Jeudy for second on the team in targets, five behind Amari Cooper's team-leading 12. David Njoku (ankle) has missed Cleveland's last two games, but Akins has just 39 yards over that pair of contests while filling in atop the tight end depth chart. If Njoku's ready to return against the Raiders in Week 4, Akins would fade back into obscurity.

Set to remain starter Week 3
Akins is set to operate as Cleveland's top tight end again Sunday against the Giants, as David Njoku (ankle) has been ruled out for a second consecutive game.
Analysis: Akins had just one target and actually handled a lower snap share (49 percent) in Njoku's absence Week 2 than he did in the season opener, when Njoku exited early and Akins proceeded to catch three of four targets for 27 yards while playing 57 percent of the snaps on offense. Blake Whiteheart was elevated from the practice squad to provide depth behind Akins last week, which may happen again for Sunday's game.

Targeted once in win
Akins caught his lone target for 10 yards in Sunday's 18-13 win over Jacksonville in Week 2.
Analysis: Akins drew the start at tight end with David Njoku (ankle) sidelined. The Browns elevated Blake Whiteheart from the practice squad for the game, and he played 24 snaps behind Akins (35 snaps). Akins has caught four of five targets for 37 yards through two weeks. While a healthy Njoku is a key part of the passing attack -- he was targeted five times before leaving Week 1's loss to the Cowboys -- Akins is not expected to see that level of volume even as a starter.

Set to fill in for Njoku in Week 2
Akins is the only healthy tight end on the Browns' roster heading into Sunday's game against the Jaguars, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Analysis: David Njoku (ankle) is considered week-to-week after hurting his ankle in the Browns' 33-17 loss to Dallas in Week 1, and he has already been ruled out against Jacksonville. Akins filled in capably after Njoku got hurt, finishing the season opener with three catches on four targets for 27 yards. The Browns will likely elevate at least one of Geoff Swaim, Cameron Latu or Blake Whiteheart from the practice squad to provide depth behind Akins.

Snap leader at TE
Akins caught three of four targets for 27 yards and saw 43 snaps, the most among Cleveland tight ends, in Sunday's 33-17 loss to Dallas.
Analysis: The Browns had just two tight ends on the game-day roster and were down to one when starter David Njoku (ankle) was taken off the field in the third quarter. He'll undergo tests Monday to determine the severity of his injury, but Akins figures to step into a significant role if Njoku misses any further time. Akins was not targeted while playing 16 of 71 offensive snaps in Saturday's 45-14 wild-card playoff loss to the Texans.
Analysis: Akins finished up a quiet first season with the Browns; he had fewer than two targets in 13 of 18 games. For the regular season, Akins caught 15 of 23 targets for 132 yards with zero touchdowns. He was signed to a two-year contract during the offseason, which made sense given his history with franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson (shoulder); however, he was never able to rekindle any of their prior on-field chemistry. Nabs six-yard catch in loss
Akins played 12 of the Browns' 71 snaps on offense and recorded a six-yard reception on his lone target in Sunday's 36-19 loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Akins technically drew a start Sunday after the Browns opened their first possession with a three-tight end set, but the 31-year-old still ranked comfortably behind David Njoku (59) and Harrison Bryant (31) in snaps on the day. While he spent the previous five seasons in Houston, Akins showed some occasional prowess as a pass catcher, but he's unlikely to produce splashy receiving lines in Cleveland so long as Njoku and Bryant are both available.

Season-high targets in win
Akins caught one of three targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 27-0 win over the Cardinals.

Two targets in loss
Akins caught one of two targets for six yards in Sunday's 28-3 loss to Baltimore.
Analysis: Akins has not seen much playing time through the first four weeks as the No. 3 tight end. Sunday's effort was the first time he's seen multiple targets, but the Browns were forced out of their usual offense in the blowout loss. Cleveland was also missing starting quarterback Deshaun Watson, which resulted in usage patterns being skewed and reduced production across the board. The Browns are off in Week 5.

Analysis: Akins had a couple catches the first two weeks, but his reunion with quarterback Deshaun Watson has generally made little impact on the Browns' offense. After being on the field for 23 snaps (32 percent) in season opener, Akins has played a combined 22 snaps (14 percent) in Weeks 2 and 3.

Secures catch in loss
Akins caught his lone target for two yards in Monday's 26-22 loss to the Steelers.
Analysis: Thus far, Akins has not been a high-volume target for Deshaun Watson, his former quarterback when the pair were in Houston. The tight end's snap count dropped from 23 in Week 1 to nine in Week 2. He's been targeted once in each of the first two games, catching both for 14 total yards. A rosy offseason scenario which speculated Akins would rekindle the chemistry he had with Watson and vault Harrison Bryant (26 snaps Monday) to become the No. 2 tight end behind David Njoku has not materialized.

Targeted once in win
Akins caught his lone target for 12 yards in Sunday's 24-3 win over Cincinnati in Week 1.
Analysis: Akins was reunited with his former quarterback in Houston, Deshaun Watson, but it didn't lead to a big day for the tight end. Instead, it was Harrison Bryant (two catches, one TD, 27 snaps) getting more time on the field and targets than Akins behind starter David Njoku. Cleveland threw the ball only 29 times on a rainy day more suited for running, but there is an expectation that Watson will do more with his arm when conditions are more favorable, which could lead to more volume for Akins.

Catches lone target Friday
Akins caught his lone target for five yards in Friday's preseason game against the Commanders.
Analysis: Akins made his catch during Cleveland's first possession, the lone drive engineered by starting quarterback Deshaun Watson. David Njoku is the clear No. 1 at the position, but Akins' history with Watson -- they spent three seasons together in Houston -- could lead to a substantial role.

Analysis: Akins missed a third straight day of practice Sunday while monitoring a knee injury. The severity of the issue remains unclear, but when healthy, Akins should compete with Harrison Bryant for playing time behind David Njoku. Analysis: Akins signed with the Browns during the offseason, and his history with quarterback Deshaun Watson when the two were Texans teammates was undoubtedly a factor. He wasn't a top target of Watson in Houston, but Akins achieved a level of success with the quarterback, catching 90 of 129 targets for 1,046 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons from 2018 to 2020. Happily reunited with Watson
Akins was on the field for Cleveland's organized team activities this week, Anthony Poisal of the Browns' official site reports.
Analysis: Akins signed with the Browns during the offseason and acknowledged that reuniting with quarterback Deshaun Watson as a primary reason. The two played three seasons together in Houston. The Browns placed plenty of offseason focus on improving targets for Watson, and the 6-foot-6 Akins brings familiarity and serves as a red-zone threat. Links up with Browns
Akins is signing a two-year contract with the Browns, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: A 2018 third-round pick, Akins played 73 games for Houston the past five seasons, topping 400 yards three times without ever reaching 500. His 37-495-5 receiving line last year was a career-best effort, and he's now headed to Cleveland where he'll compete for backup snaps with Harrison Bryant. Given his lack of blocking prowess, Akins might be an insurance plan for David Njoku more so than the clear-cut No. 2 TE -- a role that tends to be more about run-blocking than catching passes.

Akins caught five of five targets for a team-high 61 yards and a 25-yard touchdown catch in Sunday's 30-15 loss to Miami in Week 12. He also had a fumble that turned into a Dolphins defensive touchdown.
Analysis: Akins hauled in his first touchdown since Week 3 and had his fifth catch of more than 20 yards. That helped make up for the fumble, which came after a jarring hit by safety Eric Rowe. It's looking like the benching of Brevin Jordan -- at three consecutive weeks and running -- is a permanent decision, so Akins should continue to see the bulk of targets at tight end.

Back on practice squad
Akins reverted to the Texans' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: Akins was activated for the third game in a row with starting tight end Brevin Jordan (ankle) out again during Sunday's win over the Jaguars. While the 30-year-old tight end hauled in both of his targets for 22 yards, he saw his lowest playing time of the season -- 10 of Houston's 58 offensive snaps -- while filling in behind O.J. Howard (46 snaps) and Mason Schreck (24 snaps). Akins will now require a permanent spot on the active roster in order to suit up for the Texans again in 2022.

Makes catches count in win
Akins caught both his targets for 22 yards in Sunday's 13-6 win over the Jaguars in Week 5.
Analysis: Akins played just 12 snaps but once again made an impact for Houston, as he moved the chains on 3rd-and-10 on the Texans' game-deciding drive in the fourth quarter. This was the third time that Akins was elevated from the practice squad, and Houston will need to sign him if it wants to use him on the active roster again. He's been the team's most consistent receiving threat at tight end with 86 yards, and the club released Pharaoh Brown last week, so a permanent spot for Akins seems assured.

Elevated to active roster
The Texans elevated Akins on Saturday from their practice squad to the active roster for Sunday's matchup against the Jaguars, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: With Brevin Jordan (ankle) still out, Akins will join the active roster for a third consecutive contest. Over his previous two appearances, the fifth-year tight end has caught five of six targets for 64 yards and a touchdown while playing 35 total offensive snaps. He figures to garner a similar role against Jacksonville in Week 5, but he'll be out of elevations following the contest, which means he'll have to be signed to the active roster if he's going to make any more appearances for Houston…read more

Returns to practice squad
Akins reverted to the Texans' practice squad Monday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Akins played 20 of Houston's 57 offensive snaps during Sunday's loss to the Chargers after being activated for the second week in a row. The 30-year-old caught both of his targets for 33 yards while playing as the No. 2 tight end behind O.J. Howard (43 offensive snaps) and ahead of fellow practice-squad player Mason Schreck (19 offensive snaps). Akins also lined up on six special-teams snaps, and he will be eligible for just one more elevation from the Texans' practice squad this season.

Snags two balls Week 4
Akins caught two of two targets for 33 yards in Sunday's 34-24 loss to the Chargers.
Analysis: Akins was up from the practice squad for a second consecutive week due to injuries to Pharaoh Brown (hip) and Brevin Jordan (ankle). O.J. Howard was the starting tight end and led the position group in snaps, but Akins, who was part of the team last season, has system knowledge and could step into a larger role if necessary.

Back on Houston's roster
Akins was elevated to the Texans' active roster Saturday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Akins saw four targets in last week's loss to the Bears, including a touchdown reception, and it's possible the 2018 third-round pick could see a similar workload again with Pharaoh Brown (hip/shoulder) listed as questionable for Sunday's contest against the Chargers and nominal pass-catching tight end Brevin Jordan (ankle) already ruled out. If Brown were unable to play, O.J. Howard and Akins would be the only active tight ends on the roster.

Returns to practice squad
Akins reverted to the Texans' practice squad Monday per the NFL's official transaction log.
Analysis: Akins only played 17 snaps on offense, but he made them count. The five-year-pro converted four targets into three receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown. He may see another opportunity with the active roster in Week 4 against the Chargers if Brevin Jordan (ankle) is unable to play.

Catches touchdown
Akins recorded three receptions on four targets for 31 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: Akins was active for the first time this season, and he took advantage by hauling in a four-yard touchdown reception late in the first quarter. He also chipped in a 25-yard catch to begin the second half. It's unclear whether the Texans will promote Akins to the active roster again in Week 4, but he made the case for a larger role with his strong performance.

Analysis: Akins was competing for a spot on the Giants' 53-man roster among a plethora of options. Akins didn't record a catch or a target in Sunday's exhibition win over the Bengals, and he didn't enter the game on offense until midway through the fourth quarter, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Akins logged only eight offensive snaps in total, fewer than three other tight ends on the roster despite the fact that Ricky Seals-Jones (undisclosed) sat out again. The Giants don't have a particularly robust corps of players at the position, but Akins looks to be in danger of missing out on a spot on the initial 53-man roster based on his usage thus far. Analysis: Akins was held off the practice field Thursday due to an illness, but he returned in a limited capacity Friday. Although he appears to be trending in the right direction ahead of Sunday's Week 18 contest, Antony Auclair could see a slight uptick in playing time if Akins is ruled out.

Misses Thursday's practice
Akins didn't participate in Thursday's practice session due to an illness.
Analysis: Akins wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report, but he was unable to participate in practice Thursday. Since he wasn't placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the Texans presumably believe that the tight end is dealing with a non-COVID illness. However, his participation Friday should provide some clarity regarding his status for Sunday's matchup against Tennessee.

Steps in for rookie
Akins caught two of three targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 30-16 win over Jacksonville.
Analysis: Akins played 20 snaps, his most since Week 9. Rookie Brevin Jordan, who has supplanted Akins as the top receiving threat at tight end, was active but did not play Sunday after dealing with a hand injury during the practice week. It's been established over the last several weeks that a healthy Jordan is the preferred receiving option and is expected to get more opportunities over the final stretch of the season, so Akins' Week 15 involvement should be regarded as a blip.

Akins caught his lone target for six yards in Sunday's 33-13 loss to the Seahawks.
Analysis: Akins was active for the first time since Week 9, but it did not represent a return to prominence at tight end. He played just 12 snaps, fourth among the five tight ends active for the game. Houston has turned its focus to the development of rookie Brevin Jordan, who caught a touchdown pass and was targeted seven times, so fantasy speculators can forget about Akins.

Analysis: Akins, who has multiple catches in six of the last seven games, also had a fumble late in the fourth quarter that stymied the Texans' comeback attempt. There could be change coming in the second half after Houston's bye in Week 10, as the 29-year-old tight end is in the final year of his contract and is not expected back in 2022. Analysis: This was Akins' most productive game of 2021 and he moved up the target list, tying David Johnson at 18 for the season, second on the Texans behind Brandin Cooks' 57. Akins and Pharaoh Brown have operated as co-starters at tight end, altering from week to week as a target leader for the position group, but Akins is considered the bigger receiving threat. Analysis: Akins leads Houston's tight ends in targets (12) and catches (eight), but there's not a lot of fantasy value coming from the team's passing game in general. Akins caught one of two targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 31-21 loss to Cleveland.
Analysis: Akins' catch was his first of the season. He and Pharaoh Brown each played 38 snaps, but neither played a significant role in the passing game. Brown had been banged up entering the game and Houston also lost tight end Antony Auclair to an eye injury. Makes lone preseason catch
Akins caught one of two targets for nine yards in Saturday's 23-16 loss to Tampa Bay in preseason Week 3.
Analysis: Akins, who had just one catch during preseason action, should be considered the Texans' top pass-catching tight end, ahead of 2021 fifth-round draft pick Brevin Jordan. The question remains, however, are pass-catching tight ends valuable for an offense that will attempt to run the ball more than it did in 2020. Akins was not targeted during Saturday's 20-14 win over the Cowboys in preseason Week 2.
Analysis: Akins made his preseason debut but did not start, per Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle. That honor went to Pharaoh Brown, who also made his preseason debut. The tight end position group was largely invisible, as only rookie Brevin Jordan was targeted (twice) and had one catch for seven yards. Analysis: Akins missed four practices and the preseason opener while dealing with muscle tightness in his leg. Akins (leg) missed a third consecutive practice Thursday, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
Analysis: Houston head coach David Culley suggested the injury is not serious, so it's likely the team is being cautious with one of its potential starters. It's a good bet Akins doesn't play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Packers, opening up reps for several others, including 2021 fifth-round pick Brevin Jordan, who ended Thursday's practice session with a touchdown catch, per John Harris of the Texans' official site.

Coach David Culley said Akins (leg) shouldn't be out for long, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reports.
Analysis: Given that he's dealing with mere muscle tightness, Akins should be back on the practice field soon enough, even if he misses one or two preseason games. He's competing for playing time at tight end, but none of the other options (Pharaoh Brown, Ryan Izzo, Kahale Warring, Brevin Jordan, Antony Auclair) looks like a serious threat for regular targets this season. The third-year tight end opened the season as the lead tight end but on Sunday, he finished third in snap count (22) behind Darren Fells (33) and Pharaoh Brown (25). Analysis: Akins has missed three straight games while dealing with a concussion as well as an ankle injury, but it appears as though he's set to return to action after the Texans' bye. The 28-year-old served as Houston's clear top tight end during the first three games of the season, so if he's indeed able to fully clear the concussion protocol for Week 9, he'll stand to resume handling No.1 reps.

Can't suit up against Packers
Akins (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's matchup against Green Bay.
Analysis: Akins suffered a concussion upon absorbing a helmet-to-helmet hit from Harrison Smith during Houston's Oct. 4 loss to the Vikings, and though he has since cleared concussion protocol, he remains beleaguered by an ankle issue. While the 28-year-old is sidelined for a third consecutive game, Darren Fells stands atop the Texans' tight end depth chart for Week 7. Fells has recorded 142 receiving yards and two TDs over his past two outings in Akins' stead.

Iffy for Week 7
Akins (ankle/concussion) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Packers.
Analysis: That said, Akins didn't practice at all this week and isn't expected to suit up this weekend, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. If Akins does indeed remain sidelined in Week 7, fellow tight end Darren Fells will continue to see added passing targets against Green Bay.

Remains sidelined Thursday
Akins (ankle/concussion) didn't practice Thursday, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the tight end's concussion symptoms have subsided, but his high ankle sprain remains an issue. Akins will need to return to practice Friday in order to avoid missing a third straight game. In the event that he remains sidelined Sunday against the Packers, Darren Fells will continue to see added targets.

Ankle is the issue
Akins' concussion symptoms have subsided, and his high-ankle sprain is the reason for him missing Wednesday's practice, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Akins has missed two games due to lingering concussion symptoms and an ankle sprain, both suffered against the Vikings in Week 4. Darren Fells has seen an uptick in snaps while Akins has been sidelined. Prior to the injury, Akins was the lead tight end in terms of snaps and targets.

Misses practice Wednesday
Akins (ankle/concussion) didn't practice Wednesday.
Analysis: Akins has missed two straight games, but he practiced in a limited fashion all of last week. He isn't off to a good start to playing Sunday against the Packers, but Akins would still have a decent chance to suit up if he resumes practicing Thursday and/or Friday. If not, Darren Fells would continue to fill in as the Texans' top pass-catching tight end.

Not playing Sunday
Akins (ankle/concussion) will not play Sunday against the Titans, Kyle Odegard of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Analysis: Akins, who was a limited participant in practice all week, was listed as questionable on Friday's final injury report, but it seems as if the team is simply playing it safe with its starting tight end. Darren Fells, who last week posted a season-high 57 receiving yards and registered his second touchdown this season, will once again operate as the primary pass catcher in Akins' absence.

Tagged as questionable
Akins (ankle/concussion) was limited in practice Friday and is questionable for Sunday's game versus the Titans.
Analysis: Akins practiced in a limited fashion all week, and coach Romeo Crennel said Friday that Akins will be a game-time decision Sunday. Crennel also confirmed that Akins is still in the league's concussion protocol while also working through an ankle injury, so he'll need clearance on both fronts in order to play Sunday. Darren Fells will be the main beneficiary if Akins can't go.

Should be game-time call
Akins (concussion) is expected to be a game-time decision Sunday at Tennessee, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
Analysis: Coach Romeo Crennel said the 28-year-old "made a little progress," but he clearly remains in the concussion protocol. Akins has practiced as a limited participant in four straight sessions and appears likely to tally another one Friday, but the release of the Texans' official injury report later in the day will provide the final answer on his practice participation.

Limited again Thursday
Akins (concussion) was limited in Thursday's practice.
Analysis: Akins has now logged four straight limited practices, dating back to last week, while working to progress through the league's five-step concussion protocol. If he's unable to gain full clearance ahead of Sunday's contest in Tennessee, Darren Fells will draw another start at tight end.

Logs limited session
Akins (concussion/ankle) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
Analysis: Akins logged two limited practices last week before being inactive for Sunday's win over the Jaguars. While Akins' presence on the practice field to begin Week 6 is a good sign, he apparently has a new ankle injury to work through in addition to clearing the NFL's five-step concussion protocol. A return to full practice by Friday would likely erase any questions about Akins' status for this weekend's game against the Titans. Not suiting up Sunday
Akins (concussion) is officially inactive for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.
Analysis: The 28-year-old practiced as a limited participant Thursday and Friday and received the questionable tag, but he won't be available Sunday after suffering the concussion last week. Akins will need to fully clear the concussion protocol before returning to game action. Darren Fells will work as Houston's top tight end in his place versus the Jags.

Questionable for Week 5
Akins (concussion/ankle) was limited during Friday's practice and is considered questionable for Sunday's game versus the Jaguars.
Analysis: While it's encouraging that Akins was able to log two straight limited sessions to close out the week, he still has to clear the league's concussion protocol to suit up Sunday. If Akins is unable to play, expect Darren Fells to operate as the No. 1 tight end, while Pharaoh Brown could rotate in at the position.

Listed as limited participant
Akins (concussion/ankle) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
Analysis: Akins is clearly making progress through the league's five-step concussion protocol, but he'll need to garner full medical clearance before being allowed to retake the field. It's worth noting that the third-year tight end is dealing with an ankle injury, in addition to the concussion that forced him out of Houston's Week 4 loss to Minnesota.

Not practicing to start week
Akins (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Akins was concussed on a helmet-to-helmet hit from safety Harrison Smith in Sunday's loss to the Vikings, which also led to an ejection for Smith. The third-year tight end, who is also dealing with an ankle injury, was coming into his own as Houston's top pass-catcher at his position, but Akins is still dealing with the aftereffects of Smith's hit and seems unlikely to suit up this weekend against the Jaguars. Two catches in Week 3
Akins caught two of three targets for 28 yards in Sunday's 28-21 loss to the Steelers.
Analysis: Akins, who had his second catch of 20-plus yards on the season, has 11 receptions through three weeks. Darren Fells was considered the big name among Houston tight ends entering 2020, but Akins has passed him as the No. 1 option at the position in Houston. He's played 78.2 percent of the offensive snaps compared to Fells' 44.2 percent.

Seven catches in Week 2
Akins had a career-high seven catches on seven targets for 55 yards in Sunday's 33-16 loss to the Ravens.
Analysis: Akins has been a surprise through the first two weeks. After scoring a touchdown Week 1, he finished second in targets behind Brandin Cooks in Week 2. He's caught all nine of his targets through two weeks while doubling the playing time of Darren Fells, who entered training camp as the presumptive No. 1 tight end and scored Houston's lone touchdown Sunday. That usage may be a function of the Texans playing from behind a lot, but Akins is emerging as a go-to option for quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Scores in Week 1 loss
Akins caught two of two targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 34-20 loss to the Chiefs in Week 1.
Analysis: Akins had more snaps (48) than Darren Fells (25) and shined on his two receptions. His first resulted in a first down after he piled on 15 yards after the catch, showing elusiveness and tackle-breaking ability. Then he got separation and easily snagged a dart from Deshaun Watson for a 19-yard touchdown. Fells was the leader at tight end in 2019, but Akins has the early edge in 2020.

"So, looking at the jump that he's made from year two to year three, he's been more consistent, has come in every day and has really made, basically, a big play a day for us as we've gone through this camp. Gets work in with QB
Akins has been working out with quarterback Deshaun Watson, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Akins finished up last season with a hamstring injury and missed the Texans' postseason loss to the Chiefs, so his work with Watson means he's well past the injury. He's coming off a second NFL season that was more productive than his first, but the 28-year-old tight end faces a crowded position group in 2020. Darren Fells is still around as the lead tight end while Akins battles it out with Jordan Thomas and Kahale Warring.

Akins (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's divisional-round game at Kansas City.

Listed as questionable this week
Akins (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's playoff game against the Chiefs after being limited at practice this week.
Analysis: Fellow tight end Darren Fells (hip) is also listed as questionable for the contest after being added to the Texans' injury report Friday. At this stage, both profile as speculative fantasy options this week, but as Sunday's kickoff approaches, if it becomes clear that one of the two will sit, while the other plays, there would be a degree of streaming appeal in DFS contests for the active option.

Logs another limited practice
Akins (hamstring) remained limited at practice Thursday, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Back-to-back practices, albeit in a limited capacity, offer hope that Akins can return to action Sunday against the Chiefs after missing last weekend's wild-card triumph over the Bills. If he remains out or limited, however, Darren Fells once again would see added tight end snaps and targets versus Kansas City.

Analysis: Akins missed last weekend's wild-card win over the Bills with the injury, so he's not a lock to return to action Sunday against the Chiefs. If he's limited or remains out in Kansas City, Darren Fells would once again be in line for added snaps and targets at tight end.

Akins (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Saturday's playoff game against the Bills after logging a limited practice Thursday.

Records five receptions
Akins hauled in five of seven targets for 54 yards in the team's Week 17 loss to the Titans.
Analysis: Akins worked as the team's primary tight end and hauled in a season-best five receptions. With this performance, he closed the regular season with 36 receptions and 418 yards. Both represent significant improvements over his marks from his rookie season, and he could be in line to take another step forward as current top tight end Darren Fells is set to hit free agency. In the immediate future, Akins will look to help the team earn a first-round playoff win against Buffalo.

Two targets in win
Akins failed to catch any of his two targets in Saturday's 23-20 win over Tampa Bay in Week 16.
Analysis: Both of his targets were inside the red zone, but the Texans failed to execute when getting near the Buccaneers' goal. After a big nine-target game Week 14 against the Broncos, Akins has just four targets and two catches for seven yards in the two games since. He has as many targets (48) and three fewer catches (31) than starter Darren Fells, but he has only two touchdowns, both coming in Week 3.

Lower volume in Week 15
Akins caught both of his targets for seven yards in Sunday's 24-21 win over Tennessee.
Analysis: One week after being targeted nine times, the tight end dropped back to two targets in Week 15, as quarterback Deshaun Watson primary looked to his wide receivers. Akins and Darren Fells were targeted just four times combined, and none of those looks came in the red zone. Akins leads the position group with 46 targets and 364 yards and is tied with Fells with 31 receptions.

Second-most targets Week 14
Akins caught four of nine targets for 40 yards in Sunday's 38-24 loss to Denver in Week 14.
Analysis: With Will Fuller (hamstring) sidelined, opportunities became available for other receivers. Surprisingly, it was Akins that benefited the most on a day when Deshaun Watson threw a season-high 50 times. Akins' nine targets were a season high and the second-most on the team behind only DeAndre Hopkins (13).

Good to go Week 14
Akins (knee) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Broncos.
Analysis: Akins popped up on the Texans' injury report after practicing in a limited fashion Thursday, but he upgraded to full participation during Friday's session. His ability to take every rep in the final practice of the week likely means he won't face any restrictions Sunday, so expect Akins to once again split the tight-end snaps with Darren Fells, as is typically the case.

Akins (knee) was limited at practice Thursday.
Analysis: Akins was a Thursday addition to Houston's injury report, so those considering the tight end in deeper formats this week will want to check back on his status Friday. Akins and Darren Fells have operated in time-share this season, but while the duo's catch/yardage numbers are similar, Fells has been the more productive fantasy option, having notched seven TDs to Akins' total of two through 12 games. Picks up 19 yards
Akins caught his only target for a 19-yard gain during Sunday's 28-22 win over the Patriots.
Analysis: Akins was targeted only once for just the second time this season, and he caught a single pass for the second time in three weeks. The UCF product, and the Texans' tight end room in general, saw a slight dip from what was already middle-of-the-road production with Will Fuller back in the fold last week. Next up is Denver's fifth-ranked pass defense, though the Broncos have been so-so against tight ends this season.

Leading TE target Thursday
Akins caught three of four targets for 26 yards in Thursday's 20-17 win over the Colts in Week 12.
Analysis: Akins had more targets than starter Darren Fells for just the third time this season, and it was the ninth time in 11 games he's finished with fewer than 30 yards. Tight end value is closely linked to red-zone opportunities, and, in that respect, Fells (10) holds the advantage over Akins (five). Both players face more competition for snaps now that Jordan Thomas is healthy.

One catch in loss
Akins caught one of two targets for 15 yards in Sunday's 41-7 loss to the Ravens.
Analysis: As the score suggests, the Texans were behind early and never got close. There wasn't even the garbage-time statistical padding that sometimes comes with a blowout loss. Akins, who has only one game with more than 39 yards, is averaging 26.3 yards per game.

Sets career marks
Akins caught all three of his targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 26-3 win over the Jaguars.
Analysis: Akins now has new career highs in receptions (20), targets (28) yards, receiving yards (248) and touchdowns (two), with at least seven more games to build on those numbers. Unfortunately, this usage has led to only two touchdowns, both scored in a Week 3 win over the Chargers. While both Texans tight ends are getting more opportunities relative to last season, Akins clearly sits behind Darren Fells in terms of touchdowns and red-zone targets.
