Speed and the Texans have agreed...
Speed and the Texans have agreed upon a one-year, $5 million contract, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports.
Analysis: Speed had a breakthrough season statistically in 2024, tallying career-high marks with 142 tackles and five defensed passes (including one interception) over 15 regular-season contests with the Colts. However, his overall PFF grade of 56.7 ranked just 134th among NFL linebackers due largely to a poor grade in pass coverage. Speed has also worked on special teams throughout his career and will likely be part of that unit while also providing depth at linebacker for the Texans. His role on defense could be magnified if Christian Harris, who played in only three regular-season games in 2024 due to a calf injury, or Azeez Al-Shaair, who logged just 11 regular-season appearances, have any trouble staying on the field again.
Benford and the Bills have agreed...
Benford and the Bills have agreed upon a four-year, $76 million extension, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Benford was widely considered a Pro Bowl snub last season after putting together a standout campaign that included the sixth-highest PFF grade (79.3) among NFL cornerbacks. The Villanova product finished the regular season with a career-high 64 tackles, including his first NFL sack, 10 pass defenses (including two interceptions) and two forced fumbles over 15 contests. Benford was set to enter 2025 on the final season of his rookie contract, but with the extension he'll now be a core member of Buffalo's defense for the foreseeable future.
Welch signed with the Packers on...
Welch signed with the Packers on Friday, Zach Kruse of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Welch previously played for Green Bay in 2023, when he appeared in 14 regular-season games exclusively as a special-teamer. The veteran linebacker saw time in 2024 with Baltimore and Denver, again working primarily in a special-teams role. Welch will likely reprise his status as a core special-teamer with the Packers next season but could log occasional defensive snaps as a depth linebacker.
Charles (knee) re-signed with the Jets...
Charles (knee) re-signed with the Jets on Friday, Howard Balzer of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Charles entered the offseason as an exclusive-rights free agent and was tendered by the Jets in early March, so Friday's signing was essentially a formality. Charles tore his ACL in Week 14 of last season and finished the year on IR, and it's not clear if he'll be ready to play by the start of the 2025 campaign. He did most of his work last season on special teams, logging 212 snaps with that unit versus just nine on offense over 13 games.
The Patriots released Bentley (pectoral) on...
The Patriots released Bentley (pectoral) on Friday with a failed physical designation, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Bentley stated in mid-March that he has received full medical clearance after missing most of the 2024 campaign due to a pectoral tear suffered Week 2, but being released with a failed physical designation is an indication that the veteran linebacker isn't back to full health yet. Now a free agent, Bentley may have to wait until he's able to demonstrate a readiness to return to on-field activities before finding his next landing spot.
